 The wildfire that tore through Vya, Nevada devastated the Smith Family Ranch in minutes, leaving Aunt Cleo, Uncle Lavor, and Lynn with nothing but the few personal items they could grab as they ran for their lives. One moment their homes stood strong; the next, flames were swallowing decades of memories, history, and everything they built. When the fire passed, their homes were gone. Completely destroyed. Today, they’re left with very few clothes, no basic amenities, and no sense of normalcy. They are starting from absolute zero.

<div>Bill is currently undergoing treatment for Stage 4 prostate cancer. After completing 20 treatments last November, he began a second round of care in December 2025, with 40 treatments scheduled. During this already challenging time, Bill experienced an unexpected termination from his role at the Reno Elks Lodge #597 just days before Christmas, creating sudden and significant financial strain for their family.

<div>It’s important to note that when Bill accepted his role with the Elks, he stepped away from his position as General Manager at Famous Dave’s. While he remains a shareholder, he does not receive ongoing income from that role. As a result of his sudden job loss, Bill is now facing a gap in health coverage, will not be eligible for Medicare for two more years, and is confronting an $11,000 deductible for both 2026 and 2027. This is where our community can step in and make a meaningful difference.

<div>For those who know Bill, his life has long been defined by service. He has spent more than 30 years volunteering and giving back to organizations throughout Northern Nevada, including the Reno Rodeo, the American Legion Boys State program, Wooster High School’s Scholarship program, Kiwanis, and, most notably, the Reno Elks Lodge 597.

<div>Bill’s work has never been “just a job.” Whether in hospitality or service roles, he has always led with heart, humility, and an unmatched work ethic. At the Elks Lodge, he handled everything from event coordination and facility upkeep to food service, AV setup, and member support — always ensuring that every detail was addressed. His dedication played a meaningful role in strengthening the lodge, supporting its mission, and serving its members.

<div>Beyond his formal responsibilities, Bill is someone who consistently shows up for others. He responds. He helps. He mentors. He cares deeply about people and about Elkdom. When Bill and his wife Lynn travel, they often spend their own time visiting other lodges, building connections, and inviting fellow Elks to experience the spirit and hospitality of our Reno lodge.

Anyone who knows him knows how the room brightens up when he walks in and the joy and laughter that he brings to everyone around him. <div>Our little Aurora Hope, 6 weeks old, is getting open heart surgery on September 27, 2023. She has a couple of VSDs (ventricle septal defects ) that they need to close up so that she can start to grow properly. We have to go to Sunrise Children's Hospital in Las Vegas Nevada to get this surgery and need help with the costs of travel, stays, &amp; food. We will need to stay in Vegas for about 2 weeks and will need help with everything.

<div>Last night on July 16th, our night quickly turned into a nightmare. We unexpectedly lost our home in less than 5 minutes before bedtime…

<div>There was a woman that was confirmed under the influence of drugs that set the house on fire directly behind our home. The fire quickly spread in seconds. 
</div>

<div>Right when we noticed the fire, Trae ran outside with a garden hose to try to protect our home but he could only do so much since the fire was too strong and started to spread to our side. Once it caught on the big tree next to our home, the fire got in the attic space and started to burn right inside of the living area. Our home including most of our stuff got destroyed during the act of arson and unfortunately can not be recovered.

<div>We are devastated and still in shock, everything happened so fast that we couldn’t believe we just lost everything overnight…
