<div>My decision to become a midwife feels like coming home to my true self. My interest in home birth and midwifery began more than two decades ago, with my mom’s home births when I was young. In 2018, I decided to become a certified doula. I currently work with families in Florida and Washington State. Now my aspiration is to become a midwife.

<div>Black midwives are essential to addressing higher rates of maternal and neonatal mortality among Black communities everywhere. Black birthing people are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related cause than white people. This is because of medical racism.
</div>

<div>As a Black birthing person, I have experienced an obstetrical system that did not treat me with care or listen to me. As a doula, I have experienced first-hand the rush into medical interventions instead of letting birthing bodies and birthing people work through the process as long as everything is medically safe. I have also seen the tendency for providers to induce birthing people for convenience—especially around holidays.

<div>Working as a midwife will allow me to make a big difference in birthing people's lives—especially those who do not trust an OB to have their best interest at heart, or are afraid to go to a hospital because they know they will be birthing in an environment they will not be listened to (even if they have a doula).

<div>After I become a midwife, my vision is to open a Black birth center that employs Black and people of color providers - midwifes, doulas, lactation consultants, and childbirth educators. But I have some steps to take first. I am in the process of enrolling in all of my prerequisites so I can get accepted into the September 2021 midwifery cohort at Common Sense Midwifery. I have been able to secure some partial scholarships, but I still need to pay the rest of the class fees. I also need to raise the funds necessary to pay for the first year of midwifery school. My prerequisites include:

Education Fund for an Aspiring Black Midwife

<div>Let me tell you about Robbie. She's a 76-year-old disabled Black woman who raised two children of her own as a single parent on a fixed disability income. But Robbie was a mother to many. She took in her sister's kids when her only sister died and raised them as her own. At one point for several years, she took her niece's (sister's daughter) three children in to care for them. Robbie has provided many children and adults (family and friends) refuge, safety and comfort by allowing them to stay in her home for as long as they needed to. And Robbie has done this act of kindness for 50+ years. It's worth noting that all of these "homes" that Robbie welcomed the lost, abandoned and needy into, none of those homes she owned.

<div>At 76, Robbie is still renting. She never had the financial resources to purchase a home, but she provided a home for those who needed a place to rest, be safe and get a fresh start. Robbie now lives alone, with no one going in and out and she can live independently. However in 2018 due to a lifetime history of blood clots, she lost all of her toes on her right foot. They had to be amputated due to a blockage. Recovery was a long road for Robbie and a very emotionally taxing one. She can walk and take care of herself quite well. In 2022 she suffered a stroke, went through rehabilitation and returned to her rented home. Since then, Robbie has begun to slow down a little and her current living situation is nonconducive to her health challenges. She can no longer get in the clawfoot tub nor can she go in the basement to do her laundry. Despite her circumstances, Robbie is strong in mind and spirit. She is a believer and a fighter.

<div>Isn't it time for Robbie to have her own home? One she owns and one that provides the amenities supportive of her health challenges? A walk-in shower is a priority to prevent falls and accidents. The ability to do her laundry without risking going into the basement is a priority. Robbie, a woman who sacrificed her time and resources to help others in need deserves to live out her final days in her own home.

<div>This fund is for Robbie. This fund will help Robbie become a first-time homeowner at 76 and be free of a mortgage. This fund will pay it forward for all the loving and safe shelter she provided to others in her lifetime. Let's make this dream a reality for Robbie.
