My name is Tiara I’m 20 years old residing in Montgomery County Maryland. Due to the pandemic I instantly became unemployed, reaching out to the resources I was knowledgeable of in Maryland for assistance, I was sadly disappointed to be informed that I was either ineligible or I had missed my opportunity to receive them. This past March I turned 20, four days before my birthday I received information that changed my life, I now have HIV.

 

I completely fell into a dark space, developed severe depression, and even closed myself in and shut out family. I for a few months now have been relying on the help of family, performance art, and competing in competitions for money.

 

I Have a goal of $7,000, that way I can pay off my utilities and rent for the rest of the year and pay off the months missed and high priced fees that they have charged me with.

Hi my name Shamyr Johnson, I am the only daughter and youngest child of Abdusshahid "BaBa" Luqman.

In the sudden and untimely passing of my father we need your support. As many of you know "Luqman Nation" has been very prominent over that last 5 years in not only speaking up for but also acting on behalf of change. Change for the black community and change for our nation as a whole. This was done as a team. My father along with his best friend and loving Wife Jacquie Luqman. 

We want what they have started to never die. We want my fathers legacy in "fighting for justice" to continue to grow. We want His best friend to have to not deal with any added burden in doing that while learning how to continue life without her soul mate.

Memory Of Baba Luqman &Support  for Jacquie Luqman

Our brother Irvin was born with glaucoma, which is one of the leading causes of blindness. As a child, doctors wrote him off and told our mother to put him in woodshop classes. However, mummy had big dreams for her only son. She never gave up on him and even though his journey has been hard, he continues to persevere.   <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/49935928_1595720543737630_r.jpeg" alt="49935928_1595720543737630_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /> From infancy until late 2019, Irvin's glaucoma has been managed using eye drops and quarterly visits to his ophthalmologist. In early 2020, Irvin's eye pressure has uncontrollably increased and drops have become ineffective. As a result, he had emergency surgery on May 1st in an attempt to decrease his eye pressure. A week into his recovery, we lost our mother to COVID-19. Not only was he dealing with the devastating loss of our mother, but he had to deal with the fact that the surgery was deemed unsuccessful. His eye pressure has been dangerously elevated. This increase in eye pressure is causing him to lose his vision with each passing day.  Without surgical intervention, he will go blind before the end of this year.  So now here we are humbly asking for your help. Irvin desperately needs funds to cover:   1. The cost of the outstanding balance ($13,677) from his first surgery 2. The cost of his second surgery and post-operative care 3. Help Stop Our Brother From Going Blind

Everyone has a story and I'm no different but before we get to the story here's why we're here: This is a fundraising campaign I'm starting to pay for my last year of my undergraduate degree at Howard University which I began pursuing in the fall of 2008. It’s been four years since I’ve been in college and 12 years since I originally started pursuing my Bachelor of Arts in English at Howard University. I’m on the last leg of this journey but cannot finish this race without the help of my community and network. As of today, I owe Howard University a total of $8,500 for the Spring 2016 semester which I barely finished due to struggles with my mental health. I sought out support from student support services but by the time I had been assigned a counselor the next fall I was told I could not be seen because I was no longer a student. I eventually sough help on my own and am now in therapy working through my issues with depression. Additionally, I am getting support with re-assessing my ADHD diagnosis so that I can better navigate and manage my course load once re-enrolled. I am mentally ready to go back to school and need your help to do so! I am setting my fundraiser goal at $15,000 and will provide transparency on why that amount is needed below: -$8,500 is going directly to Howard to pay off the back balance. This portion must be paid before I can re enroll, register for classes, or even acquire a copy of my transcript to apply to a different school. -$4,000 is to cover the portion of my last semester of tuition that my education grant won’t cover. I have served two AmeriCorps terms and have received two education awards of $5,000 that can only be used for college. (A semester of tuition at Howard is $14,000 so I will need to make up the difference.) -$2,500 would be to cover books, transportation, fees associated with graduation and emergency housing funds. (One of the major barriers to my academic success has been the fact that I have had to support myself financially the entire time. I moved off campus after my sophomore year to cut housing costs and currently live in South East DC which is quite far from the campus in North West. I’ve often had to prioritize paying my bills (working) over dedicating myself to my studies and school work which caused me to fall behind and experience feelings of shame/guilt for not being able to do both. I don’t want to make that same mistake and am keeping that factor in mind while fundraising.) It has taken me four years to gain the courage to ask for help and I hope this ask doesn’t go unnoticed or unsupported. As someone who is always willing to support community, I hope that the abundance of support will be returned to me tenfold. I understand this is a rough time for everyone and won’t be discouraged if I do not receive the support I am seeking. I will meet this goal even if it means doing it on my own terms or over the course of a long period of time. I am preparing to launch multiple fundraisers and am also saving my own income to help supplement whatever I raise (I have $500 in my savings and am proud of that because poverty, lack and deficit mindset are indeed real). Black Lives Matter DC Legal Support Fund

No Justice No Pride, HIPS and other #DecrimNow organizations are collaborating on a relief fund to DC Area and DMV based sex workers impacted by the coronavirus outbreak. As has been reported elsewhere — sex workers are facing unique challenges with the pandemic.  Before we go in on how we are concerned for sex workers who may suffer from loss of clients as this crisis affects the economy, we are concerned about how the spread of COVID-19 may affect work environments for sex workers. Transmission has most been documented by individuals who are traveling, sex workers often work out of motels and we are concerned about potential crossover. The isolation, including from financial networks &amp; social networks with resources; many sex workers face in their typical lives will greatly increase their barriers to support in this time. Additionally in DC — according to the DC Trans Needs Assessment Survey, a survey released in 2015 that had over 500 trans participants in the DC Area — over 35% of the respondents reported of having engaged in sex work, with a majority those respondents being of color and identifying as trans woman or trans feminine. In the same survey 74% of respondents had been verbally assaulted, 42% physically assaulted, and 35% sexually assaulted, so it should be no surprise that when the issue of housing came up in the survey, 20% of those taking the survey reporting that they are currently experiencing homelessness, Those currently experiencing homelessness are significantly more likely to be HIV positive and half of those responded as homeless reported to rely “ informal and grey economic work for income (such as sex work).  As we see shelter in place orders be discussed in this country’s largest cities, we are asking community to help us raise funds for: 1) Emergency microgrants to be given to Trans sex workers - for food, bill and travel assistance, for cleaning, hygiene, sanitation and other related essentials 2) Motel rooms for homeless, housing insatiable and motel dependant Trans sex workers and sex workers who need to quarantine. 3) Replenishing supplies provided by DecrimNowDC Groups that are currently in high demand by community members 4) #DCMutualAidNetwork relief work and supplies related to that response for DC Sex workers Our sex worker community needs our support right now not just as a form of relief for an industry that has no workplace safety net — that is being affected by COVID-19 — but additionally to help reduce the dependance on traveling and seeing clients physically. The people who typically fall through the cracks within the system are the ones, where the pandemic is further along; who are also being left behind. As our for profit healthcare system becomes too incapacitated when doctors are choosing who lives and who dies, those most on the margins — Black &amp; Brown, Trans &amp; Queer sex workers, homeless or housing unstable, chronically ill, those living with HIV, our trans elders —  are not going to be the first individuals they prioritize. Lets be sure to have their backs! #### <a href="https://www.nojusticenopride.org/covid19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">No Justice No Pride (NJNP)</a> has been one of the few community groups providing dedicated support, mutual aid and care; to DC’s Transgender community. NJNP Collective housing, which was started by NJNP as a response to FOSTA/SESTA; provides long term and emergency housing to as many as 50 individuals a night.  <a href="https://www.hips.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">HIPS</a>  promotes the health, rights, and dignity of individuals and communities impacted by sexual exchange and/or drug use due to choice, coercion, or circumstance. HIPS provides compassionate harm reduction services, advocacy, and community engagement that is respectful, non-judgmental, and affirms and honors individual power and agency.  <a href="https://www.decrimnow.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DECRIMNOW DC</a>  was created by the Sex Worker Advocates Coalition (SWAC), a group of individuals and organizations promoting the human rights, civil rights and liberties, health, safety, and well-being of sex workers and people profiled as sex workers in Washington, DC while advocating for legislation and other policy changes to challenge the system of criminalization of sex work.

COVID19 Response Fund for sex workers in DC area

Black Lives Matter DC is raising funds for the East of the River Mutual Aid Network in Washington, D.C. Our partners include Black Swan Academy, Peace House DC, Peace Fellowship Church and Stop Police Terror Project DC.  Black Lives Matter DC is a member-based abolitionist organization centering Black people most at risk for state violence in DC, creating the conditions for Black Liberation through the abolition of systems and institutions of white supremacy, capitalism, patriarchy, and colonialism. We are located in Washington, DC, This Mutual Aid Network is a grassroots, community-focused and -led ecosystem for folks in DC (District of Columbia) who are engaged in or are looking to plug in. We are collecting and purchasing supplies to make hygiene bags, purchase groceries and cleaning supplies and provide other support including small home repairs, school supplies, winter coats, assistance with utility bills, and other basic needs that our neighbors have. We are working to support as many of our neighbors who are housing and food insecure as many people as possible who need support East of the River in Wards 7 &amp; 8. <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/46151912_1584415449866445_r.jpeg" alt="46151912_1584415449866445_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /> We also support other individuals, neighborhoods, groups also doing mutual aid work as we are all in this together and it’s up to us to care for each other. We are distributing these as safely as possible by making daily home deliveries, and distributing to our unhoused and housing insecure neighbors in the streets. Our hope is to fill the gaps where the government can’t, won’t or we don’t want them to. #WeKeepUsSafe This work is critical as Wards 7 &amp; 8 are majority Black and too many of us have bought into the tragic <a href="https://www.citylab.com/equity/2020/03/coronavirus-immunity-racism-history-disease-yellow-fever/607891/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">myth that Black people will not/do not get COVID-19</a> . The reality is that those of us living East of the River face great systematic disparities in almost every facet of lives. Even before the pandemic, the depths of disinvestment East of the River has been devastating to our community, who are 92% Black and account for nearly half of the District's Black population. This includes a lack of real investment in our children, youth, and elders' well-being/health and safety,  very few grocery stores offering fresh fruits and vegetables, the scourge of gentrification and the illusion of affordable housing, a deadly maternal health crisis, and a <a href="https://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/news/city-desk/article/21094252/uncertainty-plagues-the-only-hospital-in-southeast-dc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lack of a full service hospital</a> that can handle the peak in this virus.  If you are new to Mutual Aid and want to know a little more, the <a href="https://bigdoorbrigade.com/what-is-mutual-aid/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Big Door Brigade</a>  provides the following definition: "Mutual aid is a term to describe people giving each other needed material support, trying to resist the control dynamics, hierarchies and system-affirming, oppressive arrangements of charity and social services. Wards 7 and 8 are in a healthcare dessert with only one deeply troubled hospital, serving 150,000 people with no trauma or OBGYN services. So Others Might Eat (SOME) provides a <a href="https://www.some.org/download_file/view/226/213" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">snapshot</a>  of some of the most serious issues faced on this side of the river: 1. Your access to grocery stores depends on whether or not you live in a high-poverty, majority-African-American section of the city. Of the 49 full-service grocery stores in DC, only two are located in Ward 7, and just one is in Ward 8. Those three stores east of the Anacostia River serve about 150,000 residents. In contrast, 10 full-service grocery stores in Ward 6 serve 82,000 residents. 2. Washington, DC, has about 700,000 residents. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that about 17% of the DC population is below the federal poverty level, which is now $20,780 for a three-person household:  - 9% are below 50% of the poverty level - 20% are below 125% of the poverty level - About 28% of African-American residents, 13% residents of Hispanic or Latino origin, and 36% of persons with a disability, are at 100% of the poverty level. 3. Approximately 41,000 households in DC are on official waiting lists for housing assistance. Their estimated wait time is more than 20 years.  This is why we are asking for your financial support. My name is Genesis and I'm 15 years old.  Even though I look sad in some of these pictures, I'm not a helpless victim.  I'm fighting back.  On Tuesday night, November 19, I was selling Atol de Elote and plantain chips in front of the corner store by my house.  The police came up to me and started arguing with me to move on because I couldn't be selling food from my culture on the street.   My mom is a part of a group called Vendedores Unidos, a group of street vendors in DC who support each other and are fighting for licenses to vend.  I was so tired of the police mistreating vendors, chasing my mom down the street, that I decided to say, "No, I'm not moving."  When I did that, the police got mad and started to threaten me that they would take me and split me from my family.   They even got on the phone and told Child and Family Services that my mom had abandoned me and was forcing me to sell on the street.  That was a total lie.  Then the police hurt me. I'm proud of my mom.  We work in our family business together.  Our friend Enrique, who shot the video of the police hurting me, joined me and we told the police we had already called my mother.  They didn't listen.  They followed us to the ER, still threatening to separate our family, even though my mother was there right away. We went to the ER because they hurt my knee when they were going to put me in handcuffs because I was trying to my comfort brother, who was crying when they grabbed him really hard.  My brother Angel is 8 years old.   Since the police terrorized my family, we haven't been vending and don't know if we can pay the rent.  We are also trying to get the bodycam videos soon and hire a lawyer because the police are denying that they did anything wrong.  Many groups are helping us such as, Many Languages One Voice, the Stop Police Terror Project, Sanctuary DMV, Black Lives Matter DC, Jobs with Justice, Mary Center and other groups.   But I would really appreciate it if you could help me and my family fight for justice and take care of our daily needs. When we were in the ER, my mom told me, "eres mi guerillera" (you are my little warrior).  One thing I really, really hate is racism, so I stand up for people whenever I can, including myself and my family.  Please help us continue our fight for justice. Marion Gray-Hopkins, Gary’s mother, is hosting the first commemoration event after 20 years since his death, with the hope to: (i) celebrate Gary’s life and achievements, (ii) bring together families who were affected by state violence locally and nationally to grow the movement against police terrorism, and (iii) collectively heal through this weekend long event, centering around an artistic ceremony and installation. The event will take place on October 25 - 26, 2019 in the DMV area (specific time + location TBD), and is called "It Takes a Village" - as frequently quoted by Gary. We are planning to bring at least 20 mothers locally and 20 mothers from out of state, who were affected by police brutality, to advance conversations about healing and movement building. Our evening gala on October 26 will be centered around an artistic installation, which will be referred to as an altar. There will be formal and informal offering sessions at the altar for mothers as well as donors to celebrate and pay respect to Gary.  WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO MANIFEST THIS VISION!!! All money donated will go to planning the entire commemorative event, including the travel and lodging of mothers, programmings for mothers as well as the public dinner gala. Mothers who have lost their loved ones to police brutality have been at the forefront of the movement against police and state violence.
