<div><strong>On Monday morning, March 18, 2024, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania announced that Rice is officially considered exonerated and legally innocent of the crime he was convicted of in 2013.</strong>

<div>He is now trying to rebuild his life after thirteen years were stolen from him. This GoFundMe is being run by Dream.Org, which helps people given second chances. JP Morgan Chase is helping CJ with the finances.

<div>On Saturday, Nov 25th, 2023, Hisham — a 20 yr old junior at Brown University — and his childhood friends Kinnan and Tahseen were walking to Hisham's grandmother's house for dinner in Burlington, Vermont, when all three were shot in an unprovoked attack.

<div>We are thankful that all three will survive this attack, and Hisham's friends are expected to make a full recovery. For Hisham, however, one of the bullets that struck him is lodged in his spine and has left him paralyzed from the chest down.

<div>Hisham's first thoughts were for his friends, then for his parents who were thousands of miles away. He has demonstrated remarkable courage, resilience and fortitude - even a sense of humor - even as the reality of his paralysis sets in.

A Palestinian-Irish-American, he grew up in the West Bank and is a graduate of the Ramallah Friends School, a Quaker institution. He is pursuing a dual degree, studying math and archaeology at Brown. Hisham speaks seven languages, is a teacher assistant at Brown and is so dedicated to his studies that he has told his college professors he is determined to start the next semester “on time.” His professors and classmates eagerly await his return. <div>Hisham and his friends, Kinnan Abdalhamid and Tahseen Ahmad, all Palestinians who grew up together and attended the same Quaker school, were speaking Arabic and English, and wearing traditional Palestinian kiffeyah scarves, when they were approached by an unknown man who shot them with a handgun. Particularly given the ongoing violence in Gaza and the West Bank, the Burlington Police Department and FBI are investigating the attack as a possible hate crime.

<div>In a cruelly ironic twist, Hisham's parents had recommended he not return home over winter break, suggesting he would be safer in the US with his grandmother. Burlington is a second home to Hisham, who has spent summers and happy holidays with his family there. It breaks our hearts that these young men did not find safety in his home away from home.

Support For Hisham's Recovery

<div>Hallo, ich bin Leona. Vor 5 Jahren wurde bei mir eine schwere Depression diagnostiziert. Ich war akut Suizid gefährdet, was meine Eltern ganz schön erschreckt hat. Wer denkt bei einem 13 jährigen Mädchen schon daran, dass sie nicht mehr leben möchte? Ich wurde das erste Mal in eine Kinder und Jugendpsychatrie gebracht und kämpfte dort täglich darum wieder gesund zu werden. Nach ein paar Wochen durfte ich wieder nach Hause, doch meine Symptome wurden immer schlimmer. Zwar wollte ich Leben, doch das war nicht einfach. Mich beschäftigten Tag täglich neue Herausforderungen, was meinem dunklem Begleiter, der Depression echt gefiel.  So bekam ich auch noch Psychosen. Ich fing an Dinge zu sehen, zu hören und hatte das Gefühl mich fässt immer wieder jemand an. Weil ich das  alleine nicht in den Griff bekam, folgten viele weitere Klinikaufenthalte. Wenn ich daheim war, mussten sich meine Eltern 24/7 um mich kümmern, um sicher zu stellen das ich mir nichts schlimmes antue. Das habe ich dann kompensiert in dem ich mich regelmäßig selber verletze. Irgendwie ist leben nicht so einfach wie ich immer gedacht habe.

<div>Jetzt fast 5 Jahre später habe ich kaum Perspektiven. Ich kann nicht arbeiten, mein bester Freund ist mein dunkler Begleiter und meine Diagnose heißt mittlerweile Schizophrenie mit schwerer Depression. Ich werde mein Leben lang immer wieder in die Klinik müssen und mein dunkler Begleiter wird mein Partner fürs Leben. Ich habe mich viel mit verschiedenen Therapien auseinandergesetzt und auch abgeschlossen, doch leider bin ich immer noch sehr eingeschränkt.

<div>Ich liebe Tiere und bin durch meine ehrenamtliche Arbeit auf Assistenzhunde aufmerksam geworden. Durch viele Informationsgespräche mit Hundetrainern und auch mit meinen Ärzten, sehen ich in einem Assistenzhund die Chance wieder mehr Leben zu können. Ich könnte Dinge tun, die gesunde Jugendlichen auch machen. Shoppen, zu Geburtstagen gehen, Zeit mit Freunden verbringen, arbeiten oder mal alleine zu Hause bleiben.

I can’t work, hang out with friends or do normal things like other teenagers. 
After a lot of research, I came across the option of a service dog, to provide me a lot more independence, security and safety. Sadly the costs are not covered by German insurance  we are looking at 25.000€ wich is equal to 27.000$. I have no perspective of a normal life, but I wanna make the best out of “my” unique life. A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when an artery in part of the brain ruptures due to uncontrolled blood pressure. <div><strong>Q3: Did Olivia get to the hospital quickly?</strong>

<div>Yes, Uly was the first to recognize that his mother was having a stroke by her slurred speach and poor walking ability. Olivia figured it out within the hour after Uly figured it out. So to minimize brain damage, she called her sister-in-law to drive Olivia (and Uly) straight to Pasadena's Huntington Stroke Center within 4 hours of first symptoms. She spent 4 nights at Huntington Medical Center, treated with IV drips / meds to stabilize her blood pressure. Upon discharge, her hospital physicians encouraged strict adherence to blood pressure meds.

<div><strong>Q4: What is Olivia's condition at this time (6 weeks after the stroke)</strong>?
</div>
<div>Even so, she is able to walk, but with some balance, speed and gait issues.
</div>
<div>She is able to speak, but with difficulty remembering many vocabulary words and trouble with sensory and emotions.
</div>
<div>She is not able to dress completely, not remembering certain motor skills (or movements).
</div>
<div>She is unable to perform certain kitchen tasks necessary for cooking.
</div>
<div>Her brain requires a great deal of rest over the next year so that it can heal itself--she needs to sleep every few hours.
</div>
<div>She requires a great deal of work with multiple therapists (sensory therapy, gait training (helps with balance--just yesterday morning, Olivia fell in the bathroom but thankfully, did not hit her head), speech therapy, psychotherapy (to deal with emotional changes like emotional blunting and depression), occupational therapy (to retrain skills such as getting dressed completely and/or tying one's shoes and cooking, etc).

<div>Needless to say, her 17-year career as a home and hospital health care aide is over unless she makes significant progress in healing her brain. To that end, Olivia has been walking 3-5 miles every day to pump oxygen to the brain and strengthen her body. She has her first follow-up appointment with a medical doctor towards the end of May 2023. We will report the outcome of that visit at that time.

<div>Olivia is moving to New Hampshire in about 30 days. Why? About to graduate from Cathedral High School as Salutatorian of his class of 2023, her son, Uly is bound for Dartmouth University, based in Hanover, New Hampshire.

<div>Uly writes: We have together decided it would be best for our mother to move to New Hampshire to be near me at Dartmouth, find a handicapped accessible rental so she can have local emotional support, a much lower cost of living and more affordable caregiving support than she would find in LA County or with my sister, Amanda, who, at this time, wishes to stay in the Bay Area until her new job begins in August (employer currently unknown). Olivia is in the process of applying for permanent federal disability insurance, a process that takes at least 100 days to set up and qualify.

<div>When we arrive in New Hampshire (the home of Dartmouth), Mom will apply for New Hampshire Medicaid (in late June) and we will begin the process of rebuilding her life with the help of caregivers, therapists, and friends before I start my first day of school at Dartmouth in September.

<div>Our mom is incredibly proud of our academic achievements and trajectories - due in part to her tireless, unrelenting drive and single-minded dedication to our academic success - despite our growing up in public housing at times, without a father present. <div>Saber Six has a dual meaning. First, it stands for the six paratroopers from Chris Kolenda's unit (1-91 CAV, 173rd Airborne, [also known as Task Force SABER]) who were killed in action during our 15-month Afghanistan deployment in 2007-8. Saber Six was also Chris's call sign in Afghanistan. TF SABER became the only unit in the history of the war to have motivated a large insurgent group to stop fighting and switch sides.

<div>We fought hard and achieved unprecedented success (see Jake Tapper's book, The Outpost). Six of our paratroopers were killed in action and dozens wounded. Every one of the unit's 800 paratroopers has been affected deeply by the war. They served and sacrificed so Americans could pursue their dreams peacefully and safely.

<div>The Saber Six Foundation honors the memory of the six paratroopers from Chris’s unit who were killed in action in Afghanistan by 1) helping our unit’s veterans, families, and descendants achieve their dreams, and 2) supporting a Rotary Club of Milwaukee scholarship endowment for disadvantaged youth who aspire to public service.

<div>The 800 paratroopers in our unit (The 800) are approaching the most dangerous periods of their lives. Their average age is between 35-45 years old, and they are entering the lowest point of happiness for most people, which bottoms out around age 47-48.

<div>Over 7,000 American service members were killed in the post-9/11 wars. Over 30,000 have died by suicide -- that's four times higher than combat fatalities. Many others suffer substance abuse, broken relationships, depression, and other challenges.

<div>It's not uncommon for veterans to point to their time at war as the happiest of their lives. They have a keen sense of belonging, common dangers, and the belief that the people around them have their backs. At ages 17 - 30, they are also at the top of the happiness curve.

<div>Here's what happens: you leave the unit or the service and lose that belonging. You start to think that nobody gets me, nobody's got my back, nobody can help me. You feel alone in a crowded room. The problems begin here.

<div>Some find new purpose and belonging -- their happiness curve is relatively flat. Many drift into mid-life crisis and struggle. Others go into free fall and are at high risk for the worst outcomes.

<div>We want to flatten the curve for the 800 and their families. First, we want those struggling to get the support and guidance to bounce back stronger. We will assist those in free fall to get the care they need to lead healthy and happy lives. Finally, we want to help those thriving soar to new heights, and they'll inspire others.

Fallen Hero Honor Ride

<div>"Mikey" is a former Afghan interpeter who needs our help. He was assigned to U.S. Special Forces and risked his life for years to keep American soldiers alive in combat.
</div>

<div>Despite putting everything on the line for America, Mikey and his family were nearly abandoned during the Fall of Kabul. His son was shot through the leg by the Taliban, and Mikey carried the crying boy from bunker to bunker, desperately avoiding enemy hit squads. After a terrifying week, military veterans assigned to a Senator's office were able to get Mikey and his family through the gates and ultimately to safety. The family's flight was later chronicled in the New York Times.

<div>Mikey, his wife, and two boys now live in the suburbs of Dallas, TX. But they have traded danger in Afghanistan for poverty in America. The family left all of their possessions back in Afghanistan. The boys do not have school supplies or winter clothes. Both could use a new pair of shoes. Mikey rides his bike miles to work and has no cold-weather clothing for when the air turns chilly. The family is struggling with essentials like food, clothes, and transportation.

<div>A Green Beret sergeant said, "it was because of Mikey that we returned home alive." He risked everything for his American friends. Now it is time for us to help. A heroic Afghan 'terp' who kept Americans alive

<div>This past August, our team was able to help rescue four Afghan children who had been abandoned in Kabul by a relative and were able to return them to their loving mother, Suneeta Khan, in the United States. She had been fighting to get them back for several years. Their father was murdered for working for U.S. military in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, their mother is now experiencing health issues and is unable to work. They are in desperate need of help. Home & Food for Afghan Refugee Children

<div>Piper is our 20-month old Papipoo puppy who is full of love, energy, and joy but is currently fighting for her life at our local animal hospital. She unexpectedly went into critical condition Thursday night and had to be rushed to an emergency animal hospital in Annapolis where she currently remains in intensive care. We've spent several thousand dollars in the last 24 hours for emergency treatments, including a blood transfusion,  to save her life. She is being cared for by a team of veterinarians who say she has Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA) and may need multiple blood transfusions to keep her alive. The veterinarians told us Piper's red blood cell count was the lowest they had ever seen in a living dog. We know she is fighting for her life and with these blood transfusions we hope to give her a fighting chance in the days to come. Thank you.

Brian Bourgeois’ Family Support

<span style="color:rgb(51,51,51);">I want to start by thanking anyone who is willing to share in advance for any contribution possible. <br /> Myself and my family are extremely devastated with the news of my sister passing. I can confidently speak for everyone who knew and loved my sister, Nicole Gee, that she was such a bright light to everyone she touched. Always focusing on positivity and motivating others to do their best. She was and always will be my greatest inspiration and motivation to be the best version on myself that I can be. I’ve always said she is the absolute light of my life and I would do anything for her, she was my first best friend, my partner in this crazy life, my absolute hero. There are no words that will express how much she will be missed.<br /> Her love for her husband and my brother in law, Jarod Gee, is unmatched. They had a bond like nothing I’ve ever seen and I’m so devastated  that he has lost the love of his life. She was everything to Jarod, the bright sun to his life. They are both Marines and have dedicated themselves to serving this country. <br /> She gave the ultimate sacrifice. We will forever be changed and forever hurt with her absences but I know she wouldn’t have had it any other way, she absolutely loved the work she was doing in Afghanistan and was excited to tell me more about it once she was back home… <br /> Family was the most important priority in Nicole’s life, she took every opportunity she was given to see family during times she could take leave. She was a huge part of my family’s daily life, my 2 year old son would ask to FaceTime his “TT Coley” often and it’s hard to wrap my head around the having to explain why we aren’t able to call her anymore. <br /> I will be using any money raised to help family and friends with flight tickets, food, and other travel expenses so that we all have a chance to say our final goodbyes. She touched so many in her short 23 years of life and I want everyone who wants to be given the opportunity to see her one last time before she is put to rest. <p>Staff Sergeant Taylor Hoover made the ultimate sacrifice defending Afghan civilians and leading fellow Marines. Taylor was the SSgt in charge at the Abbey gate of Hamid Karzai International Airport. On August 26, 2021 he and some of his younger Marines were on security at the Abbey Gate of the airport when they were engaged by enemy combatants. Taylor was running from position to position locking on his Marines to the enemy when the suicide bomber initiated the explosion at the gate. Taylor succumbed to the over pressure from the blast ultimately taking his life. His selfless service and courage are remembered by those who served with him and those who knew him.
</p>
