<div>Greg Smith was a true friend to all he met. Kind, gentle, and generous, he always made everyone around him happy. He actively pursued several hobbies revolving around his love for cars. Hot Wheels, drag racing, car shows, etc. Greg also put his all into his job distributing the Chicago Tribune, working long, hard hours. He graduated from John Hersey High School in 1980. He was preceded in death by his twin sister, Val, his dad, Warren, and his mom, Bea. My purpose for this fundraiser is to pay for a proper memorial, service, cremation, burial, or whatever is decided by either the state, a distant relative, or possibly with our input as well. Any support, whether financial, emotional, or input regarding the best way to further this effort is more than appreciated.

Remembering Greg: A True Friend

<div>We are friends of Lydia Demange Berena and Ryan Berena. Lydia and Ryan were married in July of 2023 in an outrageously joyous ceremony with all their family and friends. Eighteen months later their new chapter took an unimaginable turn.<strong> Everything was lost when the Eaton Fire swept through their Altadena neighborhood last night. Wedding gifts, carefully collected art, family heirlooms, keepsakes, clothing, toiletries, thousands of dollars in camera gear, hard drives, and a new car disappeared in moments.</strong>

<div>The funds raised on this platform will help provide temporary housing, clothing, dog treats, and essentials as they face the daunting task of rebuilding. They will be used for unmet needs not covered by other disaster relief funds. If you have met Lydia and Ryan you know what love is. They are kind, remarkably talented creatives with friends as incredible as they are.

<div>Altadena had become a lifeline for Lydia and Ryan. After years of searching, the couple finally found a community where they felt at home. They relocated to a beautiful house near the foothills with trail access and dozens of friendly neighbors who were just as passionate about the area as they had become. Together with their two beloved fur babies, they were building a life filled with creativity, connection, and future dreams.

<div>Fire is both a powerful metaphor and an essential tool in ecology. After a wildfire, the immediate destruction is often referred to as a “burn scar.” The soil becomes vulnerable to erosion, and the risk of flooding increases due to runoff and hydrophobic conditions. Only the most resilient plant species reestablish, take root, and thrive again in this landscape.

<div>Nadira is the owner of a local Iraqi restaurant, Queen Ashtar, in Windsor, ON. Earlier today, I visited Nadira’s restaurant, told her I had no money, and she decided to feed me for free — despite being only her second customer of the day.

<div>After surprising Nadira with $1000, she stated to me, “From the beginning of July we have only made $200.” This broke me and inspired this crowdfund.

<p><strong><img class="not-resizable" src="https://2dbdd5116ffa30a49aa8-c03f075f8191fb4e60e74b907071aee8.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/2851973_1419608430.6839_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" />2017 UPDATE:  Gabi had an infection and was given IV antibiotics to treat it.  Unfortunately he had an allergic reaction and has developed a serious skin rash.  He is itchy, has painful blisters all over his chest, arms, legs and back.  The most urgent need is treatment of his allergic reaction and this involves daily IV treatments as well as other drugs he takes by mouth.</strong><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/2851973_1487898722.3967_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" />Gabriel Silva, known to family, friends, and divers all over the world as <strong>GABI</strong> <strong>LOCO</strong>, lives in Cozumel, Mexico.  divemaster for many years, today Gabi is paralyzed from the chest down (T2). He risked his life to save a friend in a dive accident and after several weeks in the hospital and many hours in the hyperbaric chamber, he is lucky to be alive.  <br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/2851973_1487900623.024_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" />More than four years since the accident, Gabi's life and those of his family have changed dramatically. He has had to learn to use a wheelchair and to deal with physical limatations he never expected to face. His wife Maria is his caregiver, business partner, nurse and friend.<br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/2851973_1487898963.7857_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" />Gabi turned his challenge into triumph by training for several of the many triathlons held in Cozumel.
