<div>Greg Smith was a true friend to all he met. Kind, gentle, and generous, he always made everyone around him happy. He actively pursued several hobbies revolving around his love for cars. Hot Wheels, drag racing, car shows, etc. Greg also put his all into his job distributing the Chicago Tribune, working long, hard hours. He graduated from John Hersey High School in 1980. He was preceded in death by his twin sister, Val, his dad, Warren, and his mom, Bea. My purpose for this fundraiser is to pay for a proper memorial, service, cremation, burial, or whatever is decided by either the state, a distant relative, or possibly with our input as well. Any support, whether financial, emotional, or input regarding the best way to further this effort is more than appreciated.

Remembering Greg: A True Friend

<div>We are friends of Lydia Demange Berena and Ryan Berena. Lydia and Ryan were married in July of 2023 in an outrageously joyous ceremony with all their family and friends. Eighteen months later their new chapter took an unimaginable turn.<strong> Everything was lost when the Eaton Fire swept through their Altadena neighborhood last night. Wedding gifts, carefully collected art, family heirlooms, keepsakes, clothing, toiletries, thousands of dollars in camera gear, hard drives, and a new car disappeared in moments.</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The funds raised on this platform will help provide temporary housing, clothing, dog treats, and essentials as they face the daunting task of rebuilding. They will be used for unmet needs not covered by other disaster relief funds. If you have met Lydia and Ryan you know what love is. They are kind, remarkably talented creatives with friends as incredible as they are.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Altadena had become a lifeline for Lydia and Ryan. After years of searching, the couple finally found a community where they felt at home. They relocated to a beautiful house near the foothills with trail access and dozens of friendly neighbors who were just as passionate about the area as they had become. Together with their two beloved fur babies, they were building a life filled with creativity, connection, and future dreams.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Memories are priceless. If you have photos, videos, or keepsakes of Lydia and Ryan, please consider sharing them. Digital memories can be uploaded <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/g3tc45xzs6crns1cvok7x/ACL8bGsbo9RwQ8xEmG3ciRo?rlkey=d2v92v35q2quwpgp2seq4jvbb&amp;st=gsftqsyr&amp;dl=0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">here</a>. These small, irreplaceable reminders of their journey together offer small beacons of hope and comfort. For physical photos, larger files, or any of their creative work that might be salvageable, please contact Elena Landsman to arrange safe delivery while the couple seek temporary housing.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Fire is both a powerful metaphor and an essential tool in ecology. After a wildfire, the immediate destruction is often referred to as a “burn scar.” The soil becomes vulnerable to erosion, and the risk of flooding increases due to runoff and hydrophobic conditions. Only the most resilient plant species reestablish, take root, and thrive again in this landscape.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We all know Lydia and Ryan possess that same resilient spirit. Together, with your support, they will rebuild their lives and find joy once again. Thank you for helping them grow through this extraordinarily difficult time.

<div>Internet meet Nadira.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Nadira is the owner of a local Iraqi restaurant, Queen Ashtar, in Windsor, ON. Earlier today, I visited Nadira’s restaurant, told her I had no money, and she decided to feed me for free — despite being only her second customer of the day.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>After surprising Nadira with $1000, she stated to me, “From the beginning of July we have only made $200.” This broke me and inspired this crowdfund.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Let's all come together and show Nadira and her restaurant, Queen Ashtar, the power of the internet and bless her family. All funds raised will go directly to her restaurant expenses. Be kind and love always ❤️

He risked his life to save a friend in a dive accident and after several weeks in the hospital and many hours in the hyperbaric chamber, he is lucky to be alive.  <br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/2851973_1487900623.024_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" />More than four years since the accident, Gabi's life and those of his family have changed dramatically. He has had to learn to use a wheelchair and to deal with physical limatations he never expected to face. His wife Maria is his caregiver, business partner, nurse and friend.<br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/2851973_1487898963.7857_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" />Gabi turned his challenge into triumph by training for several of the many triathlons held in Cozumel. Through the generosity of friends and strangers, he has a racing chair and a hand cycle and has competed in two IronMan Sprints. <br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/2851973_1487899261.2478_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" />When not training, Gabi and Maria operate a store in the plaza across from the ferry.  They sell many local items, including jewelry and handcrafted art that Gabi makes on site!<br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/2851973_1487899187.0124_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" />Gabi also gives back to his community and organized a boat trip for challenged children and their families that included fishing, clowns and a day they'll always remember!<br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://2dbdd5116ffa30a49aa8-c03f075f8191fb4e60e74b907071aee8.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/2851973_1419608266.4866_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" />Please consider donating to Gabi. No amount is too small - every dollar helps. If you've ever been diving with Gabi and he showed you an eel or drum fish, did something crazy on the surface interval that made you laugh, invited you to his home, shared his Mayan culture with you, or offered you the shirt off his back, this is how you can repay his kindness and make an incredible difference. Please share this link with other divers - we're all one "tribe" and we always take care of our own. :)<img class="not-resizable" src="https://2dbdd5116ffa30a49aa8-c03f075f8191fb4e60e74b907071aee8.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/2851973_1419608569.1246_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" />Lastly, if you have any questions about the validity of this request or how the money will be used, please reach out to me with your questions and I will provide you with references, both in the US and on Cozumel, who will confirm that these funds will be used 100% for Gabi's medical expenses. <br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/2851973_1487901061.4614_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br /><strong><em>I've never met anyone with a bigger heart or stronger will than Gabi Loco!</em></strong><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://2dbdd5116ffa30a49aa8-c03f075f8191fb4e60e74b907071aee8.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/2851973_1418939542.1531_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /></p>
