<div>On May 20th last, Rory was driving to Killeagh to a Junior football match that his team was playing in. On the way to the match Rory lost consciousness while driving and was involved in a serious car accident which has left him with life-changing injuries. Rory has permanent spinal cord damage which results in him now having paraplegia (paralysis of his lower limbs) and being a full-time wheelchair user.

<div>After his accident, Rory spent 3 weeks in the Spinal Injuries Unit in the Mater Hospital where he underwent three separate operations. In June he moved to Cork University Hospital where he spent 7 weeks in the Trauma Ward 2A, and last month he moved to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire. He will spend a number of months here continuing his rehabilitation, aimed at building up his independence and capacity to ultimately return home to live with his family and resume his education in MTU.

<div>Breast cancer ranks as the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women across Ireland, affecting 1 in 9 women over their lifetime, along with 1 in 1000 incidences of breast cancer affecting men. Notably, 23% of diagnoses occur between ages 20-50, 34% between 50-69, and 36% over 70. Despite these statistics, there are reasons for hope - charities like the Irish Cancer Society that support Breast Cancer research and services, play a pivotal role in increasing survival rates through continuous research, raising awareness and delivering education. Irish Cancer Society is more than just an organisation; it's a beacon of hope, providing invaluable support to those battling breast cancer, their families, and friends. For us, this cause hits home.

<div>I'm Ellen, and unfortunately, in 2019, I lost my mom to breast cancer, an experience that shattered our hearts and ignited a desire to honour her memory in the most impactful way possible. My mom always enjoyed spending time outdoors and experiencing the world before she became unwell. Through this expedition, we want to carry forward the legacy of those we’ve lost and support others fighting this battle while shedding light on the vital work carried out by the Irish Cancer Society and their efforts Breast Cancer research and services.

Kilimanjaro Trek in aid of Breast Cancer

<div>On the morning of April 22nd, a fire broke out in the garage, adjoining the house and spread quickly to the house itself. There was nobody in the house at the time and when the alarm was raised it was too late to save it. The family watched in horror as their house and all their belongings went up in flames. Practically nothing was saved.

<div>However, this was only the start of the tragedy.

<div>The realisation quickly dawned that there was no house Insurance as the policy had lapsed due to the family hitting hard times financially. The family was now homeless.

<div>Brendan was a carpenter, but the economic crash left Brendan without work. He re-trained as a carer and was a frontline worker throughout the Covid pandemic.
</div>

</div>
<div>The trauma of the family home being destroyed and of essentially being homeless badly affected Brendan’s mental health. Brendan died tragically on the first day of summer, May 1st, just over a week after the house fire.
</div>
<div>It was only then that the true horror of these events finally hit home.
</div>

<div>Brendan leaves behind a heartbroken wife and five children who are destitute and homeless.

<div><strong>Brendan’s hurling career</strong>

<div>Brendan was an outstanding hurler with Killeagh, with Imokilly, with Cork at all levels and even with Ireland!

<div>He first came to prominence winning several underage county hurling titles with Killeagh and colleges titles with Midleton CBS. This brought him to the attention of the Cork Minor selectors and in 1990, playing at full forward, he won a Munster minor medal.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Later, in the All Ireland final, Cork trailed Kilkenny by nine points. Brendan’s switch to midfield was credited with causing a Cork comeback. His high fielding and beautiful striking brought Cork to an unlikely draw.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Brendan’s career trajectory was on the up and he played Under 21 for the county before being selected on the Cork senior panel a short time later. He was on the bench for the Cork seniors in the 1992 All Ireland Senior Hurling final versus Kilkenny. He was just 19 and the second youngest member of the panel behind Brian Corcoran.

<div>The sky seemed to be the limit for Brendan. However, a serious knee injury curtailed his career somewhat, but he continued to play Under 21 and Junior for the county and was even selected for the Irish Under 21 Hurling team in an International with Scotland in 1993.

<div>Brendan, a stylish, brave and talented hurler was a joy to behold in full flight on the field and went on to win a county Junior title with Killeagh in 1995 and an Intermediate title in 2001, thus bringing Killeagh to senior for the very first time. A proud day indeed for Brendan, his family and the club.

<div>Brendan was also a talented actor and excellent singer who gigged at various venues around Cork, sometimes with his son Podsie.
</div>

<div>All of Brendan’s 5 children participated in Gaelic Games just like their dad. Chloe and Andrea played football and camogie.

</div>
<div>Podsie won counties with Killeagh. Seán is a Killeagh senior hurler presently and Brendan’s youngest child, 16 year old Barry, has starred with the Cork minors this year. Barry was Cork’s top player in recent championship games with Clare and Galway. Brendan’s nephew and godchild Ben captained that same team. Brendan personally coached Barry and Ben for the last ten years imbuing them with confidence and a genuine love of the game.

<div>It was some testament to Barry’s inner strength to go out and play his heart out for Cork in those games in Thurles just a few weeks after his dad’s tragic passing.

<div>This family is much loved in Killeagh and surrounding parishes. They are open, kind, good natured and genuine ‘salt of the earth’ people.

<div>Their world has come crashing down around them in the cruellest way imaginable. They are living through a nightmare. Their trauma is made worse by the fact that they have no home in which to grieve for Brendan or to start to piece their lives back together again.

Killeagh GAA Walsh Family Fundraiser

<p><iframe media_type="0" media_id="anszQ2CVPfU" class="youtube-replace" title="YouTube video player" style="margin-bottom:20px;width:560px;height:315px;" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/anszQ2CVPfU/?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="1"></iframe><br />Hi everyone, <br /><br />This GoFundMe page has been set up for Ryan Cantwell, who at just 23 years old, suffered an ischemic stroke (blood clot in the brain) following a day-case routine shoulder operation on the 26th November 2020. <br /><br />Ryan spent 2 months recovering in the Cork University Hospital and initially he was confined to bed and struggled to communicate with the hospital staff. He was the youngest patient on the stroke ward in what must have been a very traumatic experience for him. To make matters worse, Covid restrictions made it very difficult for his family to visit him. Under the excellent care of CUH Ryan started to make small incremental improvements. He began to communicate by drawing words on his phone and his physical ability improved slightly. He still couldn't walk independently but he was very determined to try, as can be seen in the video above of Ryan attempting to walk with the assistance of the physios. <br /><br />Ryan came home for a month during which time he received treatments via video-call, due to Covid -19 restrictions. He then went to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dublin where he was an in-patient for 3 months and under the excellent care of the NRH he made encouraging progress.<br /><br />The stroke has left Ryan with both cognitive and physical impairments. He has been diagnosed with expressive and receptive aphasia, meaning that he has trouble with saying and understanding spoken words. The right hand side of his body is partially paralysed with limited function of the right arm, hand and foot. This incident has changed his life and many challenges lie ahead, not least the fact that he will need a specially modified car which he can drive using his left hand and left foot only. <br /><br />Born and bred in Cork, Ryan went to St Anthony’s BNS in Ballinlough and he completed his secondary education in St.Francis College , Rochestown . His interest in the sciences led him to study Nutritional Science in CIT before progressing to a Masters in Food Microbiology at University College Cork in September 2020. <br /><br />Despite the traumatic experience of suffering this brain injury, Ryan is determined to return to education and to complete his Masters degree at UCC. <br /><br />Away from education, Ryan was an active young man and a proud member of the Blackrock National Hurling Club. A towering figure of 6ft 4in and a natural lefty with a sublime touch and strike, it was a common sight to see Ryan pluck the sliotar from the sky and drive it over the bar from 70 yards with sniper-like precision. He won a Cork u14 Feile, an u16 Premier county, two U21 Premier counties and an Intermediate county championship. Ryan also represented Cork at u17 level. <br /><br />This fundraiser will support Ryan in his rehabilitation including on-going physiotherapy, the purchase of a suitably modified car and getting his life back on track. In order to regain his independence, Ryan will need to adapt his way of living and continuously work on improving his physical, mental and cognitive health. <br /><br />Under current Covid restrictions, we need to start here and will look at community fundraising when safe to do so. We therefore ask you for your kind support to help Ryan to make the best recovery that he possibly can . <strong>RUN 4 ROCO <br />Raising money for Marymount Hospice and The Capuchin Day Centre.</strong><br /><br />Our aim is to raise much needed funds for two charities close to our hearts in Rochestown College. Welcome to our fundraiser!<br /><br />You’re probably wondering who the hell we are and what this ‘4x4x48 Challenge’ is. Well, we’re a group who have come together (virtually!!) all across Ireland and decided to give back to the community during these uncertain times by pushing our bodies to the absolute limits. <br />On March 5th to March 7th, we’re taking it upon ourselves to run 4 miles (6.4km) every 4 hours for 48 hours…. yeah. To put that into perspective, that’s the equivalent of running from Cork City Centre to Dungarvan, or 193 laps of an athletics track.<br /><br />Why are we doing this and why Aoibhneas?<br />The critical services offered to Women and Children suffering from domestic violence is under serious pressure. In 2020, 43,000 calls to respond to domestic violence incidents were received, up 16% from 2019.<br />Aoibhneas, a domestic abuse charity have received a 125% increase in calls to their helpline. We are choosing to donate all funds to Aoibhneas to alleviate the pressure they are facing inn meeting demand and ensuring Women and Children get the support they need, when they need it.<br /><br />We want give everyone the opportunity to make a difference so if you, or anyone you know may be interested in partaking, don’t hesitate to DM us via Instagram at @4x4x48ireland and we can add you to our group.<br />There are multiple challenge options including a Relay option that is suited to all. If you’re not feeling it, don’t worry - you can help us immensely by promoting us and/or by donating.<br /><br />*Update*<br />On the weekend of the event and ever since, our campaign has had an enormous impact on domestic abuse victims. Emma Reidy, Aoibhneas CEO, and her team have acknowledged the impact we have made on the lives of both new and existing clients. We have encouraged people to speak up against domestic violence and asserted to victims that they are not alone in fighting the battle against domestic violence.<br /><br />According to Emma, the funds we have raised will change the lives of abuse victims and alleviate the pressures Aoibhneas are under to offer much needed services to those who need them more than ever. Some areas the funds will go towards are as follows;<br />- Making the Payphone into a 24 hour freephone.<br />- Accelerating the development of 3 new refuge premises for victims.<br />- Improving the experience children have with music, play, art therapists.

4x4x48 Challenge in aid of Aoibhneas

On 13th July 2020, 21 year old Gary Hartnett's world got turned upsidedown.  A resident of Ardgroom in West Cork on the Beara Peninsula, this fit young man suffered a sudden bleed on the brain, AVM (arteriovenous malformation).  Gary had suffered a similar milder experience in 2012 when he was 13.  He recovered from this and life continued. <br /><br /><br />Gary is a student in Cork Institute of Technology where he was studying Agricultural Science.  He should have been starting his 4th year, in September just gone. <br /><br /><br />At the time of his injury Gary was an avid AFL player with CIT and Leeside Lions.  His passion for sport was also seen in Dart playing in local tournaments.  Gary is a member of Beara Macra Na Feirme and this supported his love of farming to which his career is headed. <br /><br /><br />On 13th July Gary was at home when he suddenly collapsed and was rushed to Bantry General Hospital where he was assessed. Here, they prepped Gary for emergency surgery in Cork University Hospital. The AVM was so severe that Gary was in a coma.  Gary was a patient here until Thursday 3rd December.  He has since moved to Bantry General Hospital to start rehabilitation and awaiting a space in Dun Laoghaire to continue his rehabilitation. <br />As a result of the AVM, Gary has to learn to do most things that we take for granted.  Learn to walk, regain his motor skills and speech. <br /><br /><br />Gary's journey home will be long and arduous with fininacial impact.  We are hoping that we can get your help so that Gary and his family can prepare for the future and fight to get Gary his independence back. <br /><br /><br />Under current covid restrictions we need to start here and will look at community fundraising when safe to do so. <br /><br /><br />We thank all Garys extended family, friends, neighbours and wider community for their support.  We are especially thankful to the amazing medical team in Bantry and Cork University Hospitals who have been looking after Gary since July.

Giving For Gary

Hi! to all of our friends, families and followers.<br /><br />2020 has been a very disappointing year due to the prevailing COVID 19 problem that has affected almost everybody in some way. We, here at the small village of Allihies, Beara.....the furthest parish from our capital have also felt the effects.<br /><br />The village hall is the lifeblood of the community and the centre of gatherings, community projects, sports and fitness, and also an employer for scheme workers who maintain the facilities. It is also the base of the sports and horseracing committee which organise the annual festival and horseracing which has taken place in Allihies for around 110 years! It is worth mentioning that the committee (present members and former members) are very hard working volunteers that are committed to giving the best experience they can every year.<br /><br />Sadly, this years festival has had to be cancelled due to the covid pandemic. This is a tragedy in itself, the amount of folks that descend on our small village for the festivities is unbelievable! You have to wonder where they all come from, such is the atmosphere that they generate over the week or so.<br /><br />The other tragedy which most people are unaware of, is the fact that it's the annual festival that provides the revenue desperately needed to keep the hall alive for the whole year leading up to the next festival. As a consequence of the cancellation of this years celebrations, we are looking at the very real issue that the hall may need to close due to an absence of funding.<br /><br />Without investment provided from festivals, the infrastructure of the hall is doomed. We have many costs to meet, including things such as: Insurance, physical repairs and maintenance, licenses,legal fees, utility bills and contributions to scheme workers wages.  This approximates to €15,000 per year.<br /><br />This also has a knock-on effect to all our local businesses too, as they all depend on summer visitors to survive through the quiet winter months.<br /><br />The hall and sports committee have considered many options to raise some much needed cash for the cause but it is difficult to do something that doesn't include social distancing and mass gatherings.<br /><br />We were not even considered for the recent government grant and this has left us with few options other than to appeal to the wonderful supporters out there who might be able to spare a few euro to keep the village hall and gymnasium in operation and to keep the festival dream alive for next year.<br /><br />So dig deep and help us get the festival back on track for 2021!<br /><br />Many thanks in advance. As a distraction I joined a group 'Distance Challenge' which started on Wednesday 15 April 2020 and finished on Friday 01 May 2020.  The main aim of this group was to get people up and out everyday, and to see who would clock up the most kms in this time frame walking/running.<br />Before Covid19, on average I did 20km walking/running per week.  The competitive streak in myself pushed me to hit 200km in 15 days, averaging 94km per week, with one days rest.  This is the equivalent to 4.7 marathons in 15 days. <br />I can only imagine during this stressful time that resources for Pieta House are being stretched, so when I was challenged to do another 50km in 5 days I have taken it upon myself to raise money for this worthy cause.<br />To finish off my 250km, I will run the last 5km on Saturday 09 May at sunrise.
