<div>As you have been witnessing the horrors before our eyes and intensification of violence, you can imagine what life is for people there. There’s also another side. Whether in Gaza or the rest of Palestine no one is giving up, no matter how discouraged. Students and parents are not giving up, will never give up, on education and schooling. This year’s high school graduates just received their final exam (tawjihi) scores and are getting ready to take the next step. One example of devotion to education and using their educational advantages is Hala, “my niece” who just completed her first year of medical school at Al Quds University Faculty of Medicine in Jerusalem. She has been dreaming and working hard through years of COVID-19 and teacher strikes when she studied alone mostly and sometimes with her friends using whatever materials were available to learn including YouTube and other electronic means just to be able to enter medical school. I have spent time with her and her wonderful family. Hala is truly a wonder to behold. Her father, my "brother" Thaer, is also a hard worker and undying supporter of Hala. Unfortunately, as a driver in the tourist industry, his work has almost come to a complete halt. That is why I am asking for your support. I am doing what I can to help raise tuition of $11k for the coming year because I love Hala and 100% confident in her ability to fulfill her dream. <div>Unfortunately, Nick continues to accumulate debt from medical bills, the cost of everyday living on a teacher's salary in the Dallas Ft. Worth area and to top it off, he is trying to support his 11 year old daughter who is a champion volleyball player on the 11's Mad Frog Volleyball team which travels the country to compete in national competions.

<div>Of course, she wants her dad with her at every game, but the costs of traveling across the country and attending competitions are enormous. Three days a week he has to go in for 3 1/2 hour dialysis treatments either before daybreak then go directly to school to teach, or teaching a full day, then going directly to have his dialysis treatment after work.

<div>Some days, he has to miss work due to  illness caused by his dialysis treatments. He has used up his sick leave days... so missing work also means missing pay. He's fallen behind financially.

<div>I hope you can find it in your heart to help this dad support his daughter's dreams and continue to be able to pay his medical bills, rent, car note, and other expenses such as driving her over an hour one way, several days per week just for volleyball practice. The money for gas and food alone is hard to come by.

Sam has been in the game of racial and social justice facilitating and consulting as long as I have. More maybe.

<div><strong>Now is the time for Samuel to focus on their own healing. </strong>They have been given the chance to take a pilgrimage to Elmina, Ghana—a fishing port on the south coast. Elmina draws folks from all over the world to its beaches as well as its historical significance as a base for the trading of enslaved human cargo during the transatlantic slave trade.

<div><strong>Sam needs money. Not only to get to Ghana, but to take care of their basic expenses before, during, and after the trip.</strong> Their current struggles have made it so that they can’t (and don’t want to) keep up with the inhumane pace required by our inequitable systems. They are behind on mortgage payments and bills and they are looking for a soft place to land. To create a space for their own healing so that they can continue to show up for <a href="https://www.iridescent1.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the healing of others</a>.

<div><em>“This will help reset my nervous system to be able to continue, maybe, in the same type of work…holding space for people to be well. At this moment, I'm so overwhelmed, like a sopping wet sponge. I need this to ring me out a little bit, give me a fresh perspective, give me some fresh wind blowing through so that I can continue.”</em>

<div>And...because this is who Samuel is...<strong>they will also be in Ghana making connections with other artists, healers, and entrepreneurs to explore the creation of <em>One Africa</em></strong>, a spacious wellness retreat space that allows for decompression, healing, and dreaming. This space will create pathways for the diaspora to come home.

<div>Thank you for reading this — it’s not an easy request for us to make, on so many levels, but we want so much to be able to honor our father, Bill Tillman.

<div>As you may already know, our dad suffered a heart attack and COPD exacerbation this summer and was admitted to the hospital and then spent a short time in rehab.
</div>
<div>In rehab, he worked incredibly hard with occupational and physical therapy to recover. When he went home, he continued working hard, making improvements and feeling good about his recovery. As his children, we gladly found the money to pay for daily caregivers to help him get stronger, regain his independence, and continue to be an active member of his community.  However, to our sadness, he suffered two setbacks from which he never truly recovered. He passed away on August 21, 2022, two days after his 86th birthday.

<div>Our father was committed to mentoring men on their journeys to be better fathers, husbands, and individuals. He was an active member of MDI/Atlas. He loved his children fiercely and never missed a chance to communicate that love to each of us. The loss of his earthly presence is palpable to all that knew him, and to say that he will be missed is an understatement.
</div>

<div>The cost of the caregivers was very expensive and has exhausted our resources. We are reaching out to our friends, family, and community members to help us raise $7500 to help cover the cost of his cremation and final expenses.

<div>With a heavy heart, I share with all of you that my mother is in need of emergency housing and living expenses. A 58-year-old Black Woman creative entrepreneur, she had to abruptly leave her relationship of 20 years due to toxicity and unsafe living conditions. Having been out of the workforce for 10+ years, she relied solely on her partner for housing, food, and transportation. Many of us are familiar with this experience and how there are not many safety nets for women of color having to start over in their lives.

<div>My siblings and I have set up a community care support group for our mom encompassing friends and family. None of us have the financial capacity to support my mom in the ways that she needs, so we are asking our wider community for support.

<div>This asking for support is very vulnerable for us as we know that culturally, we are socialized to keep family matters private even if it is a heavy crisis systemic of many underlying social issues. Thus, we are not asking for your support lightly. We are courageously being honest about the fact that this challenge is larger than any one of us can bear alone or as a care group. We need to mobilize resources on my mom’s behalf to ensure her safe transition into the next phase of her life.

Healing for Kinyata

<p>Edler is an incredible person, known for his kindness, charisma, and strength as he moved to the United States alone looking for a better life. Recently, tragedy hit and he unexpectedly had a stroke at the young age of 34. Edler’s brain has been impacted, and we do not know when he might be able to regain movement. He has given an invaluable contribution to our community as a Haitian Creole interpreter. Unfortunately, the stroke has affected his speech and his main source of livelihood as an interpreter is now uncertain.

<p>Edler is always willing to help others, today he needs our help. He is currently hospitalized and in need of financial assistance to cover healthcare costs especially as he does not have insurance. We know that his condition will require long-term care, that his recovery will depend on the access to physical therapy and other support that is costly.

Fighting for Imani’s Education - 5k in 10 days!

After losing her job during a high risk pregnancy and giving birth right before the pandemic started, Jenna has had to take on full time childcare for her newborn and three school aged children by herself while trying to find enough work to cover all of their living expenses. She hasn't been able to qualify for PUA in GA and now she is in a position where she needs to break her lease and move to a new place away from her ex and his family. She's found a much cheaper place to move into with her cousin, so we're looking to raise enough to get her out of her current lease and into her new place in the next month!<br /><br />Jenna is one of our longest term and most vital leaders, once she can get settled into her new place we can focus on supporting her important community work and her work through <a href="http://www.iamjennatorres.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">I Am Jenna Torres</a> ! <br /><br />From Jenna, "I’m a poet, writer, educator, social justice advocate and more. I would like to use this year to develop trainings for those working with marginalized around best practices and community guided solutions, develop retreats that address trauma and getting back to community, increasing equity within black and brown communities, and have creative outlets for young people such as writing camps or showcases because poetry literally saved my life. I want a year to restructure my life, to have flexibility of taking care of myself and family, and give back to the world without the stress of unpaid rent and bills that impact my credit."<br /><br />Breaking the lease is 2 months rent ($1700/month, $3400 total), her new place is $600/month ($1800 for first/last/security) and she also needs to cover food for her family, bills, and $150/wk for childcare, with needs totaling around $6,000.

Jenna Needs to Move in a Hurry!

<p>On Thursday, June 22nd at 5PM, the SMASH Board Chair, Sharice Taylor, passed away from a kidney related illness. SMASH is reaching out to the entire community that loved and admired Sharice for help in paying down her funeral expenses. Sharice leaves behind an accomplished legacy at SMASH.</p>
<p>Despite her deteriorating health, she consistently displayed a model of leadership to her family and neighbors affected by slumlord Abraham Vaknin in Liberty City. Because of her, SMASH is now on a path to successfully establishing a Community Land Trust with expedited housing to address the slumlord emergency that has kept her family and others living in detestable, dangerous and inhumane conditions.</p>
<p>Most importantly, she leaves behind her, mother, her siblings, 11 Children, 13 grand children and her partner Terrance Cash, who will all miss her life spirit, energy and compassion.</p>
<p>Please consider making a donation to cover Sharice's funeral expenses. Graciously, Sharice's mom has begun funeral arrangements with her church at a much reduced cost of $3600. All proceeds will go towards the funeral and related costs. Thank you Sharice Taylor. May you rest in power.</p>

Together, we can get help Reina go through her recovery with dignity, without having to worry about basic needs like food and shelter.<br /><br />Dear Friends and Colleagues,</strong><br /><br />Despite the passage of Obamacare, it is the sad and cruel reality that millions of people are still systematically denied basic healthcare insurance.  Such is the current reality of our dear friend, comrade, and sister Reina Gomez.  Reina is fighting a courageous battle against cancer; she beat it once and its back.  As an undocumented domestic worker, she cannot get health insurance.  She is being treated at Jackson Memorial public hospital, and she’s working full time to make ends meet.  She will soon hit a wall when her cancer treatment makes working impossible.   She doesn’t have a single-family member in Miami, and  no other supports to pay rent, groceries, and incidental medical expenses.   Her situation will quickly become impossible.  We can help her now by raising $5,000 for her to get through the next few months.<br /><br /> Here in the USA and in her home country of Honduras, Reina has dedicated her life to fight for social justice and equality for all.  She has been a leader  on issues ranging from immigration reform, to fighting for the rights of low wageworkers, and raising awareness about the condition of domestic workers in the USA.  She has been a union leader, an immigrant rights activist, and is now on the forefront of the struggle for domestic workers’ rights.  She has always been a vocal advocate of unity between immigrant workers and African Americans.  She has helped many, and now it is time for us to help her get through this difficult time. <br /><br />She is fighting valiantly, but she can't afford basic needs care which puts her at risk of becoming homeless while in treatment and recovery.  She won’t be able to work to pay her rent, her car insurance or to buy food or the medication she might need for her recovery.   Reina doesn’t have any savings and her health condition makes it impossible for her to take on more work to save and to cover for her expenses after the surgery. The walls are closing in on her and things seem to get more difficult every day. She is doing everything possible to find a solution, but she's running out of time. <br /><br /><strong> You can be a shining light in Reina’s time of darkness. This year of my 35th birthday, I’m asking you to help me continue my spiritual journey into yoga, a practice that has completely transformed my life. <br /><br />My practice is my foundation for being in this world and is what sustains me in my work for healing and health justice. Help me to deepen my yoga practice at the Ashtanga Research Institue this year. In India, I will study Sanskrit, chanting, yoga asana and meditation and be immersed into the culture of Mysore, India the source of my practice, Ashtanga yoga. <br /><br />In order to make this trip possible, I must raise $3,500. Please help me realize one my biggest dreams my 35th year!<br /><br />It has been a blessing offering healing justice programs and yoga primarily in the southeast. I have led yoga demonstrations, created a youth yoga program and worked alongside people from all walks of life, with varying abilities and backgrounds to find healing through yoga. A month in India will help sustain me as a healer and provide me with a deeper spiritual grounding and knowledge to use in my healing justice work. <strong><br /><img class="not-resizeable" src="http://3b4efb995be6c5c64252-c03f075f8191fb4e60e74b907071aee8.r12.cf1.rackcdn.com/1667735_1404926713.2099_multi.jpeg" alt="" width="100%" /><br />My Journey in Ashtanga</strong> In 2006, when I moved to Louisville, KY I was a full time smoker, a heavy drinker and a sexual violence survivor who didn't know how to address the deep trauma deep in my physical and emotional body. While I had practiced yoga before, under the guidance of Laura Spaulding of Yoga East, my knowledge of yoga deepened because she taught a traditional and lineage-based yoga from guru Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois. Ashtanga asked me to step into the 8-limbed path of yoga in a deeper way. <br /><br />I have long wanted to travel to India, however life or work always seemed to serve up an impossible obstacle usually around funding and taking off for a month abroad. <br /><br />As some of you know my whole family planned to travel to India in January, however life took some twists and instead we postponed that trip indefinitely and instead visited and spent time in California, the place of my partner’s family and community. After heart talks with my partner Chris, we decided that this is a trip I need to take solo; however, I need a community of love and support to help get me there. Since becoming self-employed my family lives on a limited budget, which leaves very little room for saving for a trip like this. <br /><br />Help me "go to the source" of the practice that gives me purpose and fuels my healing justice work in this world!<img class="not-resizeable" src="http://3b4efb995be6c5c64252-c03f075f8191fb4e60e74b907071aee8.r12.cf1.rackcdn.com/1667735_1404927338.4674_multi.jpeg" alt="" width="100%" /><br />All the money you help me raise will directly support my spiritual path to Mysore, India, including covering plane fare, shala fees, lodging and food.
