<div>Lately, Humberto has been working incredibly hard to get his life and health in order. He stopped drinking, was actively working on quitting smoking, and was taking better care of his body through regular exercise. He and I recently started surfing together, and the positive changes he was making were truly inspiring.

<div>On Saturday, July 27th, Humberto woke up early to catch the sunrise at the beach and get in the water. But as he exited the ocean, he felt severely dizzy and nearly fainted. After resting in the shade of a kind beachgoer, he managed to drive home.

<div>What followed is a medical nightmare no one should ever have to experience:

<div>The First Clinic: Realizing he needed immediate medical help, he drove to a local clinic, where they told him he needed to get to a hospital right away.
</div>

</div>
<div>The Walk to Saint Luke's: Terrified he might pass out behind the wheel, Humberto chose to walk to Saint Luke's Hospital in 90-plus-degree heat. Upon arrival, he was told he needed $20,000 USD upfront just to be seen.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The Diagnosis: Unable to pay that fee, he walked to another clinic. There, an EKG confirmed the worst: he was actively experiencing a heart attack.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The Wait: He took a cab to the Dr. Raul A. Carrillo General Hospital, where he was stabilized. However, due to a lack of local specialized care, he spent five agonizing days in a room without a heart monitor, experiencing intermittent, severe chest pain while waiting for an opening with a cardiologist.
</div>

</div>
<div>Thankfully, he was finally transferred to La Paz today. Once he is settled, Sarah and I will go see him, and I will update this page with any news.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>This fundraising effort is deeply personal to Sarah and me, and I know it is to many of you as well. Humberto is a kind man and a wonderful human being. What started as a business relationship has grown into a brotherhood. Let’s be completely transparent—Humberto has his flaws, just like the rest of us. But what makes this so heartbreaking is that this medical emergency struck right when he was actively turning his life around.

<div>I am reaching out to you on behalf of my dear coworker Claudia and her beloved dog, Paloma. Paloma is not just a pet; she is a cherished member of Claudia's family, loved by her husband and three children. Unfortunately, Paloma is currently facing serious health challenges.

<div>Recently, she was diagnosed with ehrlichia, and an ultrasound revealed that she also has pancreatitis. Pancreatitis in dogs is a severe condition characterized by inflammation of the pancreas, which can be acute (sudden and potentially life-threatening) or chronic.

<div>To add to Paloma’s struggles, she was diagnosed with skin cancer three years ago, but she has been stable since then. Despite these obstacles, she continues to bring joy and love to her family.

<div>On July 5, 2025, our family experienced something no one should ever have to face. Our 17-year-old sister was the victim of a violent and brutal attack that took place inside our grandfather’s longtime home in Seattle. She was stabbed all over her body multiple times. Our grandfather was able to call 911 for her, and she was rushed to the hospital. Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DLuVrhTRDcW/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">law enforcement officers evacuated our grandfather</a> to ensure his safety.

<div><strong>Miraculously, she survived.</strong>

<div>She is now beginning the long, painful road to recovery both physically, emotionally, and psychologically. Our family is standing by her side every step of the way, but the journey ahead will involve months of medical care, therapy, and support.

<div>At the same time, we are also trying to care for our elderly grandfather, whose home (the site of the attack) was left in ruins. She recently traveled to Mexico to say goodby to her mom who unfortunately passed away on November 15th due to COVID-19. Maria is now trying to finical support her dad and her siblings and take care of her parents house. I have 3 children, a boy of 11, a girl of 5 and a boy of 3 years old, at around 11 in the morning I was at home with my three children, that day we had just arrived from my son's school. After picking up the computer so that he could study, as soon as we got home I decided to call my mom i'd spent about 5 minutes talking to her when a friend who lives in Medford called me to ask if I had already evacuated. I was surprised because nobody had warned me. At that moment I went out to look outside, and a neighbor who was running around asked me if I was already leaving, to which I replied, where? He told me that a place was burning two miles from the mobile home parking lot and that I had to leave now. My husband was working, I was alone with my three children, as expected I was surprised. I told my mother that I would call her later,              I hung up on her immediately. I had a terrible feeling my body began to shake, I only had 10 minutes and I began to grab important documents and a change of clothes for my 2 young children. My eldest was grabbing clothes for himself, I was like in shock, my mother called me back and told me "you are nervous but control yourself and grab as many clothes as you can". Clarity came to my mind and I started to grab as many clothes for my children as I could, my oldest son helped me  with everything. I left things for him at the door of the house and he put them in the car, my son put his brothers in the car, he had the keys ready, he took shoes for his brother and sister. My son instead of crying behaved like a man; he helped me with everything. He is my hero! Thank God we are fine but sadly our mobile house, my car, and all our belongings burned, any donation would be a lot of help for our familly. I was diagnosed with stage 3 Anal Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Squamous Cells form the surface of the skin lining of hollow organs in our bodies, and they line the respiratory and digestive tracts. This kind of cancer is relatively common, but its occurrence in the cells of the anus is incredibly rare. So rare that some have suggested I ought to play the lottery. While the thought of winning the big one is appealing, I think the chances of being diagnosed with anal cancer are even greater, at least in my experience. In addition to my backside, the doctors have identified the spread to surrounding lymph nodes, and are concerned it may have spread to my lungs, but it is too early to tell.<br /><br /><br />The treatment for the cancer involves the use of high doses of precisely directed radiation, in combination with intense doses of chemotherapy. This treatment is recommended so as to not disturb the incredibly important sphincter muscle. The prognosis for eliminating the cancer is pretty good, but I’m hoping everyone out there will cross their fingers and their toes for me!<br /><br /><br />I can really use your help in beating this thing! First, your finger and toe crossing, praying, well wishing, and good vibe sending mean so much to me said or unsaid, so please send it in droves. Second, I need your help tackling the enormous financial burden that is all too common in facing major illness. My mounting medical bills include diagnostic testing, chemotherapy, radiation treatment, and the slew of medications designed to treat side effects and enhance the effectiveness of treatment. It would also be very helpful, if I can afford it, to take advantage of natural herbal remedies and spiritual guidance, because I believe the earth contains the keys to lasting health, and a strong spirit makes for a resilient body. Finally, given my line of work, I am a paycheck to paycheck person, so I could really use assistance with the daily responsibilities of covering some rent, bills, and any lost wages so I can focus on this challenge and get back on my feet again.<br /><br /><br />So why should you save my ass? Honestly, I don’t know the answer to that, and sometimes I think I may have been dealt this for some karmic debt unpaid. But one thing I do know is I’m just like you, and we are equal. We come from the same place, are made of the same things, and will return to the same place when we go. I think we need to remember that.<br /><br /><br />So who am I and what do I do? Well I’m a person, who has known inside since I can remember, that I was destined for great purpose. I think this purpose is yet to be realized and that is why I must beat this and live long. <br /><br /><br />I’m thankful to my father for sharing nature with me, it has given me everything, and I am lucky to work on its behalf every day. I work for a non-profit that rehabilitates nature. My job is to raise money to execute projects that keep our mother earth whole, and as part of that I get to share my immense enthusiasm and passion for the natural world with people of all ages and walks of life. In my small community I am also a volunteer firefighter, an opportunity I never expected. It affords me the chance to be there for people and the things they love NOW when they need it most. Racing under the sirens, challenging myself physically, learning skills, and playing with the jaws-of-life is exciting and rewarding. I also volunteer at Bay City’s Art Center a non-profit dedicated to sharing the creative and therapeutic benefits of endless forms of artistic expression. And lastly, I spend most of my free time in the woods and on the water admiring animals, plants, and fungi, and with the woman in my life, my cat Sisquoc, my labby dog Belle, and my three chickens. <br /><br /><br />In my short time around cancer patients and the amazing people who are committed to help us persevere, I am utterly taken aback and forever inspired. Thank you, and know that I am a dedicated part of “our” team for the rest of my life. I’ll be seeing you on the front lines.<br /><br /><br />That’s it in an eggshell. Cancer sucks...please help - David

A Tale of Our Times (aka, Dave Demke update!):  As if we needed another example of the political becoming personal: when last we left our hero Dave Demke and his fearless partner in cancer-busting, Caley Milliken, Dave was battling esophageal cancer with a combination of his signature wit, warmth and resolve - aided in no small part by the extraordinary team of doctors and support staff at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.<br /><br />Today, the good news is Dave’s tumor is doing what it ought - shrinking!  The less good news - like so many in our country, Dave and Caley are in a jam.  Caley, working two jobs to make ends meet, now makes juuuuust a little too much for Dave to qualify for Medicaid.  Dave, while simultaneously kicking cancer’s ass, is also attempting to find full-time employment - meantime, his unemployment compensation has run out.  The solution - of course!  Be forced to buy insurance that costs as much as your monthly rent!  Why didn’t *I* think of that?<br /><br />My sense is that Dave and Caley feel a bit embarrassed about having to ask a second time for our help, to which I’m sure I can confidently respond for us all in saying - “we’ll have none of THAT, thank you very much!!”  If ya love these two like I do (and I know you do!), please make a donation - no amount too small, and like they say, none too large! Help Dave Demke: The Sequel!

On the night of March 6, 2018 our dear friend Mohammad Fawad Mohammadi was the victim of an unspeakable crime. He and his family were in Lincoln City, Oregon, when they were involved in what seemed to be a relatively minor traffic accident: another car collided with theirs as they exited a restaurant parking lot. When Fawad and his wife stepped out of the car to investigate the damage, the other driver backed up then accelerated toward them. Fawad was able to push his wife to safety, but bore the entire force of the crash with his own body. Inexplicably and without warning, the driver backed up and drove at him again. This time Fawad was able to roll his body out of the way and call to his wife to get their baby out of the car and run. <br /><br /> Fawad had to be taken by Life Flight to a trauma center in Portland. He underwent surgery immediately in an attempt to repair his leg which was severely crushed. Currently it appears that he is suffering from the crushed leg, broken hips, fractured spine and numerous facial injuries. At this writing he is undergoing a second surgery to save the leg. The doctors have prepared him for the high likelihood that the surgery will not be successful.<br /><br /> Fawad came to the U.S. a little over three years ago from his native Afghanistan, where he served as an interpreter for the U.S. Military for four years, often in the thick of battle. He made a lasting impression and was sponsored to come to the U.S. Shortly after he arrived he began working in the Lambs/Bales Marketplaces. He married and he and his wife were blessed with a lovely baby boy, who is now 18 months old. He is the sole breadwinner while his wife has remained at home caring for their son. He is still employed in the Deli/Catering department of the Lake Oswego Lambs/Bales Marketplace where he has been an extremely diligent and capable worker and is loved by all. In fact, Fawad is loved by everyone he meets. He always has a smile and exudes joy. He loves to share meals, music and dancing with friends. We are devastated that he has fought so hard to raise his family in a safe, happy place, only to have their lives changed instantly in such a brutal way.<br /><br /> Fawad’s life and the life of his family has forever been changed. The road to recovery is going to be a long hard battle, and we are seeking funds to support Fawad in this battle in any way that can reduce the suffering and damage visited on his family in this horrible and tragic way.

Thank you so much for coming to this page to read more about our Foster son and why we need your support.<br /><br />A year ago my wife Sarah had a young man in her class (she is a 3rd grade teacher) who had some catastrophic things happen in his life.  We can't go into too many details but in the matter of just a few weeks he was confronted with an abundance of loss in his life.  Sarah and I decided to step in and help have a stable home for him while he recovered from the trauma and also help him transition into being a part of a 'normal' family.  This young man has been thriving in every way possible;  grades have improved, gaining weight, and having a healthier outlook toward life in general.  We are so proud of him but there is one way he seems stuck in the mud and can't get out;  that's where you can help.<br /><br />He doesn't have a place to grieve the loss he endured.  The only person he ever knew was unexpectedly gone and he's never been able to say goodbye.  We are hoping to raise enough funds to set up a final resting place where he can go and say goodbye as well as have a place to go and pay respects throughout the years.<br /><br />This is the piece of the puzzle that we believe will open his world up immensely and help him move beyond the pause button that this trauma pressed on his development.  <br /><br />Please take a moment and see if there's anything you can do to help.  We're taking donations to offset the unexpected costs of laying a very important person to rest as well as help an amazing young man push play on the rest of his life.<br /><br />Thank you for even considering a donation.  We appreciate it more than words can express.  It's gonna take a village to help realize this goal and we're so grateful to be a part of an amazing one that we believe can move mountains.<br /><br />Much love and gratitude,<br /><br />Todd and Sarah Freeman
