He has committed his life and career to helping Malawi have a healthy environment and healthy, thriving communities. Building on over 15 years of permaculture, agroecology and sustainable development experience, Eston recently founded the Center for Permaculture and Regenerative Living in Malawi. Eston is raising funds to purchase 30 acres of land and establish demonstration gardens, a community center, and training space, to name a few goals! This will be a central community hub for capacity building, providing hands-on experience in food and nutrition security, environmental restoration, agroforestry, water and soil health management, climate adaptation, livestock management, development of entrepreneurs, and demonstrating nature-based solutions.

Support Eston Mgala's Permaculture Vision

<div>Marius Ziganira is a man on a mission. An agronomist refugee, he plans to restore the degraded farmland of the Nakivale Refugee Camps, Uganda, so that it can sustain the large and growing population of refugees who live there. Nakivale is a complex of 74 villages housing about 140,000 refugees and 35,000 Ugandans.  Many of the refugee are widows trying to live and feed their family from farming on denuded soils.  All are coping with physical or psychological traumas related to the violent incidents they fled. Uganda's welcoming policy towards refugees, by providing plots of land for farming and housing, has not been able to withstand the damaging pressures on soils, trees and water, from both an increasing refugee population and the climate change related unpredictability of the weather creating crop failures.   With the assistance of Australian collaborator, Owen Allen, Marius has started a program to rebuild the soil, improve agricultural including establishing a seed bank of robust varieties, teach ecological agriculture methods, and provide climate resilience.   Successful farmer seminars and the first phase of developing a seed bank has shown the potential of the concept. At the behest of the Ugandan Government, the UMOJA Community Foundation has been formed that, apart from Owen Allen, has a board , administrative and technical team of significant education, capacity, and experience from among the refugee community. In the near term, the goal is to: * procure enough seeds for crops to provide food and develop a seed bank of stable seeds to expand the access to seed to more and more farmers; * gather enough tools (we are talking hand tools like hoes and machetes) to provide for the family-based work force and, * with help from the international community, to train the farmers in sustainable methods to build soil fertility.

Seedbank Ugandan Refugee Farmers

Please help me help others. There is a need to make the process of seeking Asylum more accessible to those fleeing peril caused by capitalism in Central America. Additional barriers have recently been added to making asylum even more challenging to achieve for vulnerable populations. I am asking you to help me reduce those barriers. Help me make the relative safety of Eugene more equitably available.  The Need for Asylum: The people  of El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Guatemala are experiencing life threatening levels of persecution and danger as a result of tensions over resources. Gangs have formed and are using violence toward women and children to manipulate, coerce and force participation of families into their agenda. Some of these families have managed to flee their homes which no longer provide safety or sustenance. They have journeyed over many terrains and perils to reach the border of Mexico and the U.S. inspired by the hope of Asylum that has been available and granted through U.S. laws since the end of WW II.  Some families are being turned back at the border. Some families are being separated and detained. Some families are being released into the United States. A few families have made it to Eugene and are living in the homes of Sponsors.  Once in Eugene, there are many aspects of arriving, adjusting and healing that are needed. There are some volunteer groups and some agencies that are providing services on a volunteer basis until funding can be arranged.  A newly arrived refugee or asylum seeker will be required to engage in various systems such as; Immigrant and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Legal Representation, Medical Services, Mental Health Services, Educational institutions and more. These are all cross cultural relationships that are complex and challenging on both ends.  The single best predictor for weather an application for asylum is granted is if the person has legal representation. Families come with minimal, if any finances. There exists a gap, a chasm to be crossed. My Offering The gap between the need for legal services and the lack of funds is where you and I come in. I am asking for your support to help me fill that gap.  I will work through  the legal nexus of Equity Corp. I will be offering my experience and skills to provide Navigation through the legal process and to provide witness to the ICE check-ins.  I will offer 12 hours a week in collaboration with Oregon Community Asylum Network, changing and adapting my role as the needs change in the process of achieving asylum.  My Qualifications I am a Mental Health Counselor with a Masters in Counseling, fluent in Spanish and over 20 years of experience in Social Services and counseling. I have education and skills which I have used in previous positions to provide Mental Health Counseling in both English and Spanish. I have taught English as a Second Language for children, Spanish as a Second Language for English speaking adult, Legal Advocacy for women seeking protection for abuse, and play therapy for children who have experienced trauma.  My Ask I am asking for individuals like you in my community to fund me to provide these services for as long as they are needed. I am reaching out to you asking that you consider supporting me in this restorative work. I am hoping to be able to raise $6000 for the time being. We knew we could raise this money but we are all awed that we were able to raise it this quickly. We thoughtfully came up with our goal amount by discussing future anticipated costs with Stephanie. We did our best to come up with an accurate monetary reflection of what recover would look like for jim and his family. However the reality is we don't exactly know what is in store. We know medical costs will be high and we know there will be an extensive recovery time when jim won't be working. Our dear friend, jim mcdonald had a massive heart attack on May 25th while he was traveling in Scotland. A well-hidden flaw in a heart we all know to be a source of joy, love and compassion finally made itself known. He is currently in critical but stable condition, is under sedation, and while he is expected to make a full recovery, the journey there will be long. Dear friends, new and existing, My name is Denise Joy, and for more than 30 years I have run Mountain Spirit Herbals. Making medicine has been my passion since learning many years ago from my grandmother, who was the 3rd in a lineage of herbalists. In the last 30 years, I have built a business on selling high quality medicinal herbal products to the public.  Now, my ability to continue to make these products is threatened. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken to surfing the internet to find small business owners like me in an effort to force us to match the standards of pharmaceutical drug companies. In essence, they put me through the harrowing process of a drop-in visit, with multiple follow-up visits, during which time they informed me that I cannot continue to do business in the same way I have been. This in spite of the fact that never once has a complaint been made about my products, nor has any been found to be tainted, or to have caused harm to anyone. My business is a sole proprietorship. I make, package and market nearly every item in my catalog myself. I take pride in the quality of my products. The herbs which form the basis of every product are grown organically or wildcrafted by myself whenever possible; otherwise I purchase only high quality organic and wildcrafted herbs, oils and other products from respected vendors. My emphasis is on small batch processing, ensuring the best possible product. At this point, the FDA is insisting I make major changes to my business including at a minimum relabeling, changes in marketing and advertising, and extensive documentation on every product for every batch made.  They are treating me as a drug company even though I am careful always to stress that these are traditional uses for herbs and that a certified health practictioner should be consulted before use.  At this point, I have not been given a deadline by when I must comply, but I am being told that it is necessary to do this as quickly as possible, preferably within a year. This is my livelihood as well as my passion. To create herbal medicine that helps those in need is what I do best! I truly want to continue doing this in my life, but at a cost of an expected $20,000 over the next year, I don’t know if I can without your help. Costs will include: --lawyer fees. I have found an excellent lawyer who specializes in helping small businesses like mine work with the FDA successfully. I will need to be reclassified as a non-drug entity, among other things --consultant fees. I am looking for a consultant who can help me ensure that I am in compliance with the FDA rules --development and printing of procedure manuals --graphic designers to redesign all labels --website fees for modification of the website --catalog rewrite and reprinting fees --loss of business costs. I expect that I will have to significantly change some products. Others will be relabeled and marketed differently, so clients will not know what they are. Some of my best selling products have been specifically targeted by the FDA. Additionally, I may have to take down my website for a period of time in order to make changes. The website represents a major portion of my business income Why should you help me? --If my products have helped you or a family member, this will help ensure they will be available to you for years to come!  --If you have never used my products, then consider whether it is important to you to have high quality alternative products which can be used to help you and your family maintain and achieve better health.  --Plants are the basis of nearly every medicine out there. The government should not be able to take away the choice to use these traditional choices from the public. --My business supports me and my family. Help Me Comply with FDA regulations

Our beloved friend, mushroom guide, gardener and permaculture educator, Fungi Lion Gabe Gaul, has suffered some heavy hits recently including having many of his belongings burned up in the Fruitland, WA wildfire. He was in the process of moving to new digs in Kettle Falls when the fire came through his old place and took out a lot of his personal items and tools of his trade. And this is right on the heels of having his work truck totaled in a deer hit. For sure, a lot of folks are needing help right now and this is probably not the only appeal for financial help you're hearing, but if you can, please send your love to Gabe, possibly in the form of money (but all love is gratefully received, that much we know). We all have experience with what a financial burden moving to a new place is, so just think how heavy a burden it is for Gabe to lose his truck and many of his tools and belongings right in the middle of that.
