Support the McGowan Family After Tragic Accident

<div>Our sweet Ari is facing a medical crisis and needs our help. She went to the Doctor in early December because she was having chest pain, At this appointment the doctors found a mass in her chest which let to many tests including the removal and biopsy of a lymph node in her neck.

<div>Mid-December, at the age of 22, she was diagnosed with stage 3 Hodgkins Lymphoma. Today she began bi-weekly Chemo treatment at Fred Hutch Cancer Center and will be in treatment for at least six months.

<div>Ari is Elise's best friend and a Senior at the UW Foster School of Business. Unfortunately, this diagnosis means Ari will likely need to reduce and/or put her studies on hold. As a student who relies on financial aid, this is devastating news.

I’ve created this gofundme to raise money for the Smith family to turn the loss of their mother’s life into saving the lives of others. How? In Loving Memory of Edna Cox-Thomas

Through this, we have come together as a family to support the costs of her treatment. It has averaged and continues to cost 5,000 USD per day. The hospital does not offer a payment plan and hospital balances need to be paid every other day. Costs in Mexico are severely inflated due to scarcity of available care, exacerbated by her being in an ICU all this time. Over the last month of treatment we have paid over 150,000 USD. Our mom is not insured for, given her diabetic condition, as well as her recent kidney transplant. Unfortunately, in Mexico it is impossible to be insured with such pre-existing conditions.<br /><br />On February 13, we thought mom’s week or so battle with COVID19 was about to conclude. Up to that point, she had not suffered serious symptoms and was able to receive treatment at home. However, she became dangerously hypoxic and had to be hospitalized on February 14. Miraculously my dad was able to find a hospital that would admit her (solely on the basis that she had oddly tested negative a few days before). Mexico’s healthcare system is completely saturated due to the pandemic – sadly, every day many are turned away or unable to receive treatment. We were one of the lucky ones.<br /><br />My dad was asked to pay 10,000 USD up front for her to be admitted. She was stabilized, but 48 hours later, was fully sedated and placed on a ventilator which she has been on since. After COVID-19 ran its course she was moved out of the COVID19 ward, but continues in intensive care due to an infection which is a common aftermath of the virus. <br /><br />As those who have become familiar with this disease know, once the virus leaves the body, damage caused to lung tissue can be just as or even more dangerous. The longer one remains in hospital, the higher the risk of infection.<br /><br />A few days ago, as we were expecting her to be moved out of the ICU, into a regular hospital room and on her way to recovery, she contracted a second, very resilient infection. The powerful antibiotics showed promise at first, but the bacteria is proving to be resistant and is affecting some of her organ functions. At this point we don’t know when she’ll be well enough to go home.<br /><br />We do not take lightly our ask for assistance and are trying our best to handle these costs on our own using our savings and even credit. To our great disappointment and that of her doctors, her stay has been longer than we anticipated. We know many among us are impacted by the pandemic and know the economy is not at its strongest. But anything you feel you can contribute is something we are very thankful for. If you cannot donate, please consider sharing this post; but either way, we invite you to pray for her recovery. Hasta ese momento, no había sufrido síntomas graves y pudo recibir tratamiento en casa. Sin embargo, se volvió peligrosamente hipóxica y tuvo que ser hospitalizada el 14 de febrero. Milagrosamente, mi padre pudo encontrar un hospital que la admitiría (y eso porque curiosamente había dado negativo a la prueba hacía unos días antes). El sistema de salud de México está completamente saturado debido a la pandemia; lamentablemente, todos los días muchos son rechazados o no pueden recibir tratamiento. Fuimos uno de los afortunados.<br /><br />A mi papá le pidieron que pagara 10,000 USD o mas de 200,000 Pesos por adelantado para ser admitida. La estabilizaron, pero 48 horas después, la sedaron por completo, la entubaron y ha estado conectada desde entonces. Después de que COVID-19 siguió su curso, fue trasladada fuera de la sala de COVID19, pero continúa en cuidados intensivos debido a una infección que es una secuela común del virus.<br /><br />Como saben, quienes están familiarizados con esta enfermedad, una vez que el virus abandona el cuerpo, el daño al tejido pulmonar puede ser igual o incluso más peligroso. Cuanto más tiempo uno permanece en el hospital, mayor es el riesgo de infección.<br /><br />Hace unos días, cuando esperábamos que la trasladaran de la UCI a una habitación de hospital normal, contrajo una segunda infección muy resistente. Los poderosos antibióticos que le administraron se mostraron prometedores, pero la bacteria está demostrando ser resistente y está afectando algunas de las funciones de sus órganos. A este punto, no sabemos cuándo estará lo suficientemente bien como para regresar a casa.<br /><br />No tomamos a la ligera nuestro llamado de apoyo y estamos haciendo todo lo posible para manejar estos costos por nuestra cuenta con nuestros ahorros y préstamos. Para nuestra gran decepción y la de sus médicos, su estadía ha sido más larga de lo que anticipamos. Sabemos que muchos de nosotros estamos afectados por la pandemia y sabemos que la economía no está en su punto más fuerte. Help Patty end her battle with COVID

Oterious Deforrest Bell passed from this earth on January 27, 2019 after both of his lungs collapsed. Many Chattanoogans might not recognize that name but tens of thousands of people knew "<strong>The Flower Man</strong>" or "<strong>The Midnight Florist</strong>" or, as he was known to most, simply as <strong>Sandy</strong>. <br /><br />A Chattanooga native, graduate of Howard High School and veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Sandy had returned to his hometown after his service a troubled man. For several years during the 1980s he was homeless but as the riverfront revitalization began in 1982 and nightlife returned to the downtown area, Sandy reinvented himself and became a ubiquitous local icon. During the day, Sandy Bell worked odd jobs. He helped local business owners and residents maintain their property, mowed lawns - whatever was asked of him. <br /><br />In the evenings, Sandy rode all over the city on his bicycle, offering kindness and flowers to everyone he encountered free of charge. It happened that people often offered him money in return although he never asked for it. Always a colorful character and a sharp dresser, he quickly became a perennial feature throughout the bars and restaurants. He served as a de facto ambassador, as everyone who had ever been out past 7:00 in downtown Chattanooga for four decades had a Sandy Bell story they carried with them long after their daffodil or daisy or rose had wilted. Many stories of awkward first dates include the romantic ice breaker of Sandy arriving with flowers in hand. in 2010, Sandy was reunited with his daughter after 26 years. His daughter, Angela Tucker, was startled to discover that her birth father was a local celebrity. <br /><br />She documented her journey as well as his in the film "Closure." When Sandy Bell's health began to fail the city rallied to support him. It became clear that perhaps no other person in the history of the city was so universally loved across every demographic. Not since Luther Massingil has one individual stood so clearly as a stalwart demonstration of the spirit of Chattanooga.<br /><br /><strong>All funds recieved will go towards funeral expenses, plane ticket to make sure his biological daughter can be here for the funeral (flying from Seattle). All additional funds will be put towards a memorial (hopefully a statue of Sandy in downtown Chattanooga).</strong><br /><br />Sandy's service will be open to the public as we want to include all of your stories about Sandy and, of course - <strong>flowers</strong>. Once we have identified a location for the service we will let folks know about the date and time.
