When I was in college I spent more time worrying about how I would pay for school then investing in my educational journey. Don't get me wrong, I did a lot of really amazing things...I was a student leader, I've earned multiple degrees, and I met great friends along the way who sustained me. Yet and still, every semester was a struggle. I thought a lot about: How would the next tuition bill be paid? Can I afford all the groceries in the cart? What am I going to do if this loan application doesn't get approved? What does self-care look like for someone like me? My experience didn't leave room to do many of the things that other students had the privilege to pay attention to. The worst part about it, I watched so many of my friends leave because they couldn't afford it. All of whom were Black. Black womxn in particular are struggling to survive in our educational landscape. There are so many barriers that leave us vulnerable to disruptions in our success. The Intention Co. Scholarship Fund was created in honor of the experience of Black womxn learners and scholars who struggle to stay. I committed myself to a career in student affairs because I wanted to see our system change. It hasn't, so here we are. Every year students are missing from the graduation stage. Black students. Black excellence. Black teachers. Black creators. Black engineers. Black nurses. Black scholars. Black students deserve a seat at the table too, but many of them can't afford the chair. The Intention Co. Scholarship Fund was created in honor of them. In honor of my mother who worked her ass off to make sure I finished. In honor of me. This fund is the sum of it all. We have a goal to raise $5,000 to kickstart this initiative and your contribution will help fund a dream. What is the Intention Co. Scholarship Fund The Intention Co. Scholarship Fund was created to support Black Womxn learners and scholars. The goal of The Fund is to inspire motivated Black Womxn to manifest their intentions through encouragement, recognition, and financial support. The Fund will award a number of scholarships each year through two scholarships: The Academic Scholarship and The Learner Scholarship.  The Academic Scholarship is awarded to three Black Womxn scholars who are actively enrolled in a degree-seeking program in any major. This $1,000 award supports tuition, transportation, books, fees, supplies, and the cost of living associated with degree completion.  The Learner Scholarship is awarded to four Black Womxn learners interested in cultivating a new skill, investing in a hobby, or expanding their knowledge in a dedicated area. This $500 award can be used to achieve a number of intentions including investment in a special interest project or the completion of a certificate program.  Our Guiding Principles  The Fund recognizes the intersectionality and spectrum of Black womxnhood and encourages trans, non-binary, gender non-conforming and ungendered folx to see themselves in the identity of The Fund. The Fund encourages Black Womxn of all ages to apply.  The Fund believes that GPA and test scores are not an indication of an individual's potential, and therefore does not use these scores as a metric for scholarship consideration.  The Fund believes that applications should be reviewed by individuals who believe in the success and edification of Black Womxn learners and scholars. <img class="not-resizable" src="https://2dbdd5116ffa30a49aa8-c03f075f8191fb4e60e74b907071aee8.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/12754525_fb_1467920110.8128_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /> *inhale* *exhale* This is hard to do, but here we go.  Many of you have asked us when we will be starting a family, and been met with vague mumblings, jokes, or outright aggression (Sorry, Mark).  Well, the thing is Quinn and I have been wanting a baby- very much.  Maybe even two.  Could be twins actually, because we have tried the “natural way” for over a year and a half.  And we have tried helping nature along with three rounds of intrauterine insemination, and now we have reached the pinnacle of science and nature, as well as our last resort...IVF. We have committed to In Vitro Fertilization this September after trying one final round of insemination.  We aren’t sure exactly why this is happening to us.  We spent the majority of our eight years together *preventing* this very thing from happening too soon.  We got jobs, we moved, we bought a house, we got some dogs, we got married- we never expected to have any difficulty conceiving when the time was right.  There is no guarantee that this will work, but our doctor believes we are perfect candidates for this therapy and that this is the best chance of us bringing home a baby of our own. We know it isn’t a sure thing...people we know have gone through the same pain of wanting and wishing and trying that we have been experiencing for the last two years.  But, we have to believe that we can experience the gift of having a child that is ours.  We may not be the most worthy, the most perfect, the most whatever; but we know we can provide a loving and stable home. The money we are asking for is a lot. It is about half the total cost of medications, monitoring, egg retrieval, fertilization of said eggs by an embryologist, implantation by a doctor back into Quinn’s body, and then freezing and storing the rest of the fertilized eggs. We are so incredibly lucky to have families that have banded together to support us, and we have both taken on second (and third, and fourth) jobs to build up our savings--but the remaining amount is not a negligible sum for us. It feels weird doing this, writing this.  Asking for money- especially for something like this feels all kinds of weird, but we can’t do it alone.  We deliberated long and hard before putting this together and we thought: who better to reach out to than the community that will be surrounding our baby in the future? We have spent the past two years working on ourselves, and our partnership- preparing our hearts and minds for the struggle and joy a baby brings, trying not to let the heartache that every single month has brought us break our faith that we will have a child of our own someday. We know we can’t pay you back for your generosity in any way other than promising to try and bring a positive, conscious being into a world that could use him/her/them.  While we can’t auction off naming rights to the highest bidder (although we considered it!), we do promise to let you come feast your eyes on what will be the cutest, fattest lil nugget in all of the land...(sorry friends with babies, thats real tho.)
