Help us keep this glorious Viking beast alive for many more epic rides through the dust.

We are Blazing Death Ship , a Mutant Vehicle Theme Camp forged in the fires of poor decisions and great friendships stretching back to the halcyon playa days of 2003. Our ship, the Smage, was born in 2013 when a crew of brave, foolhardy souls with limitless optimism taught themselves to weld and built a Viking vessel out of blood, bones, and Craigslist steel.

Since then, she’s crossed dimensions, survived sandstorms, and faced Werewolf Margaret Thatcher in single combat. This year, we hope to continue to ferry thousands of dusty wanderers across the deep playa of Burning Man, luring them with the dulcet tunes of Laura Branigan and offerings of legendary buttery grilled cheeses.

But our Smage is in trouble.

After 13 years (and the devastation of 2023’s Mudpocalypse), our battered, bruised Smage is showing her age. Many things have broken, corroded, or are just plain destroyed. We must attend to her, if she is to sail again.

What We Need

We’re raising money to make critical repairs and upgrades that will keep the ship rolling, glowing, and booming for years to come. Your donation is critical to help us address the following urgent needs:

Fuel line elevation and battery system overhaul: Dust, mud, and rain demand a complete internal overhaul.

Replace the worn-out tires: They’ve seen some sh*t and jacking up a 10,000lb steel ship ain’t easy.

Rebuild the wooden upper deck: Time to make her a touch less “life-threatening, maybe even “comfortable-crow’s-nest-chic.”

Repair and rewire electronics: Sound is premium, and we’re still recovering from thousands of dollars of Mudpocalypse damage.

Upgrade the lighting: Let’s replace those Home Depot-grade LED strips and make her dazzle across the dark playa.

Replace our baby generator: The beating heart of our sound, light, and late-night chaos needs more than 2000 watts!

A myriad of mysterious mechanical issues: She may be temperamental, but we should strive to keep her happy.

Stretch goal: Upgrade the sound system: so we can keep blasting Branigan and other bangers

These critical repairs are vital towards keeping our hand-built, battle-tested, and legendary Burning Man mutant vehicle running for at least another year. And let’s be real: the cost of steel, wood, and parts just keeps going up. What used to be a quick run to the hardware store is now a multi-stop, budgeting nightmare. Every year it gets harder to support The Smage on grit, duct tape, and group text chaos alone.

Who We Are

Camp Blazing Death Ship is a motley band of mostly-broke artists, makers, musicians, cooks, and dust-covered chaos agents who value inclusion, participation, and a healthy amount of self-deprecating humor. We’ve spent our summers welding in backyards, scavenging at scrap yards, irresponsibly spending rent money on lumber and steel, then lying to friends about how “the ship won’t take over their entire garage.” We’ve ripped our clothes, severed our legs with angle grinders, and spent a few too many nights in the ER; all in service of building one of the most beloved Viking-themed mutant vehicles on playa. In 2025, we’ll return once more as a 20 person crew; feeding the masses roasted sparkle pony from our Meat Hall and keeping Black Rock’s fire burning.

Why Help?

Because the Death Ship is a moving, glowing, rumbling piece of playa history—a throwback to when rust, steel, and tetanus were critical elements of Burning Man.

Because she's a vessel for dusty passengers, the host of midnight meat feasts, and a beacon of Branigan into the abyss. Our Smage turns weirdos into legends [for a night].

Because if you've ever danced aboard the ship, devoured a grilled cheese in Deep Playa, or just smiled as a Viking ship rolled by… this one’s for you.

Think of the satisfaction of knowing you helped keep this beautiful beast alive, and that somewhere out there, in a swirl of dust and light, she sails on because of you.

*Update from Mikey*

Hello all,

Ideally, I would like to give a warm & fuzzy hug to each of you in person for your support. Most, if not all, of you have either built, worked the counter or have been a customer at the Hug Deli. Please give yourselves credit as you are the ones that create the magic moments at the Hug Deli. Once I am situated, work will commence to rebuild it. Then we will meet again!

Much Love,

-Mikey

Artist Mikey Stubbs, creator of the Hug Deli, Art Gallery, and tiny art car fabricator needs your help. He and his family have lost almost everything in the Eaton Fire.

The Stubbs family has been part of the Altadena community for over 60 years while Mikey has been a core contributor to the Burning Man/Festival/Art community for decades. Their home and virtually all their possessions were lost in the devastating LA fires. The home he was raised in, the van used to bring the art to the community, his original artworks, the Hug Deli itself, and much much more, have all been destroyed.

This fundraiser is to support Mikey and his mother to get back on their feet and recover. The funds will help Mikey and his family continue making art to give to the community that has embraced him for so long while also providing support to care for the family. Funds will be used for living costs, replacing the lost van, clothing, and much more, including rebuilding the Hug Deli.

This is a start to help them get back on their feet.

Please help share some love that Mikey has shared with us for so long! Consider donating what you can, now or later, and sharing this GoFundMe with everyone you know to show Mikey how much he’s loved and cared for.

Thank you to everyone that has contributed.

Help Hug Deli artist Mikey Stubbs recover after the LA fires

EDIT: Thank you all so so very much for supporting my brother during this very scary time. I can’t express how much your generosity has touched my family.

I have decided to increase the goal to motivate friends and family who still want to give. Gordon’s extended stay in the hospital will inevitably result in devastating hospital bills and his trouble breathing will keep him from work for some time.

Please keep sharing and thank you thank you to all of those who have given already!!❤️

*My brother Gordon was in a motorcycle accident the day before Easter. He broke 5 ribs, his clavicle, collapsed a lung, and totaled his primary mode of transportation. After a 3 day hospital stay he’ll be released for a month long recovery at home. We’re calling all our friends, family, and community to help with living expenses and medical bills. Anything will be helpful, even the smallest amount. We appreciate your help and support.

Gordon was in a motorcycle accident.

We are beyond shattered at the news of our youngest brothers life being taken by a drunk driver last night. He was studying marketing at Manhattanville college in NY, a dedicated college lacrosse player and a brother, a son, a grandchild, an uncle and a friend to all who knew him. This loss is pure devastation to our family and his friends as we prepare to say our unexpected final goodbyes. We appreciate all of the love, support and outreach. Hug your loved ones.

Our brother Rob, taken too soon....

On May 13th our family suffered an immeasurable loss when our beautiful Christine unexpectedly passed away. She leaves behind an irreparable void in the hearts of her family as a daughter, granddaughter, niece, sister, aunt, cousin, fiancée and friend. Christine lived her life with unequaled kindness and love spreading light, happiness and joy with her unforgettable smile. And as we prepare to mourn the loss of her in our lives we pray that we can ask for your help in bringing her home. In Christine's journey to see and experience all the beauty of this world she had recently been traveling, and unfortunately was in Mexico when this tragedy struck. We are now faced with surmounting challenges and costs in bringing her back. If there is any small amount you can contribute to help us, we would greatly appreciate it as we just want to bring her home, to family. Thank you for your help and support in this immensely difficult time.

Light and Love for Christine

Please help our mom Terri to continue her fight.

Terri is a loving Mother of 5 children. She has 7 grandchildren. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010. At first we were told that it was stage 2. She had a massive tumor in her left breast. She underwent 6 rounds of chemotherapy before she had her mastectomy. Her lymph nodes had cancer throughout them. She was trying to get reconstruction but her body would not allow for this. She had to have 48 treatments of radiation in hope that the cancer would not spread past the breast. Unfortunately, this was not the case. Test showed the cancer had spread.
Terri has had the best positive attitude. She has never given up the fight for her life. She says that she is not ready to leave this earth. She participates in the grandchildren’s daily lives and wants nothing more than to see them grow.

In 2011, we found out from a PET scan that the cancer had spread to her bones and she had a big hole in her T12 (spine). She then underwent 24 more rounds of radiation. We were hopeful after this she would be in remission. She had another PET scan which showed a few more spots on her spine, few spots on her ribs and pelvis. At this point, we were at a loss for what to do. We decided that it was best to get a second opinion so we visited USC Keck Medical center. The Doctor down there put her on this medication that was not approved for breast cancer but he said that they have been doing studies and it has been working. We would try ANYTHING!

She was on that medicine for 18 months and the tumors were stagnant (not active). It was the closest to remission that she would ever see.

October 2013, she had her semi-annual PET scan and the worst news came. It was in her liver (stage 4 at this point) and the spots in her bones were active again. We were then in the mode of what do we do from here? What is the next treatment plan? We went back to USC to talk to the Doctor. He gave us a new plan that we were getting ready to execute.

I want to make a side note, Terri has worked this ENTIRE time. She has worked through Chemo, Radiation, surgeries and all of the emotion.

Then in December of 2013, Terri was at work and she felt so horrible that she HAD to go to the Emergency room. She drove herself there. This was where we found out that the cancer has caused so much inflammation that it was unbearable. She was having breathing (lung) issues. She was in critical condition and there were a few days that we thought we were going to lose her. She was seeing Christmas carolers that were not there. She was in the hospital for over a week and yet had another surgery.

Since then she has been on massive doses of chemo and unable to work due to her condition. She has been on temporary disability which has allowed for her to be able to live but she has been unable to pay any of her medical bills that she has incurred. She has requested to be cleared to work but the doctor will not allow it.

Unfortunately the temporary disability will end and she will not have anything. Her doctor has asked her to apply of permanent disability which she has and she will not be able to live with the amount of money they will give her. She will not have medical insurance because she will have to quit her job and that is where she has her insurance through. She is not eligible for Medicare because she is too young.

So Terri has stage 4 Metastatic Breast cancer and is unable to work and will have NO medical insurance. Without treatment she will DIE!

She has been fighting hard but the expense of her illness is becoming too much. We hope to raise funds to pay all back medical bills and health insurance cost. We am asking for anything you can do to help our Mom! We are desperate. We NEED her in our lives and she is not ready to lose this fight that she has bravely fought for the past 4 years.

Please help her continue the fight.
