This house, built in a close-knit, working-class neighborhood, was the legacy of Roberto Lopez, a devoted husband and father who left this world too soon. DEFINING HUMAN- A short film about Afrofuturism

<div>It is with heavy hearts that we are making this gofundme to support funeral expenses for the family of Bethany Sunday Shortt, traditional name Scwicwéye. Our communities have suffered a great loss of one of our young front line leaders. Scwicwéye fought to defend her homelands of Secwepemculecw, the communities of the DTES, and Indigenous lands everywhere from state violence, pipelines, deforestation, gentrification, land theft, and industrial devastation. She faced arrest and incarceration to hold the line against industry and demonstrate her commitment to futures where Indigenous lands and bodies are not secondary to profit. She believed in land protection by any means necessary and unapologetically defied settler colonial land destruction. Scwicwéye’s work reflected a future without prisons and pollution. Her warrior spirit and visionary mind fed movements, questioned colonial authority, mobilized youth, shut down financial offices, tended fires, and connected her to many within our communities who hold her as family. She found joy and belonging in Secwepemculecw; She spoke of building pithouses, fishing, wild horses, and dreams for her homelands. Her journey to connect to her lands and peoples reflects what it means to be learning and growing as a queer Secwepemc youth. Scwicwéye demonstrated the importance of solidarity between queer/2S youth within Indigenous resistance. She knew that the work she was doing would bring great personal pain, but did so in defence of future generations. It is in these moments that we reckon with the struggle and great personal toll it takes being a young Indigenous land defender fighting courageously for futures we may never know. Our community is struggling to come to terms with this loss, and we need to reach out to the wider world for support. Bethany’s / Scwicwéye’s family is now in need of funds to bring her home safely, and put her to rest in a good way that honours her Secwepemc ancestral belonging. <div>He was acting as the designated driver for some friends, when their car slipped on the ice and got stuck in a snow bank. Constables Ben Donockley and Kyle Kwasnica showed up — they arrested Godfred without due cause and put him into into their vehicle.

<div>They drove him away from his home and DROPPED HIM OFF IN -28°C snowy Calgary weather at a construction site where there was no one. (Did I mention he is from Ghana and was only wearing a track suit and it was 3:45 in the A.M.?!!)

<div>He called 911 for help, but they told him it was for emergencies only and hung up.
</div>

<div>He called again and finally, after he'd been in the freezing cold for 15 minutes, Constable Trevor Lindsay showed up and swore at him, told him to “stop calling 911”, tasered him IN THE BACK, and handcuffed him. Then he decided to drag Godfred BY THE HANDCUFFS through the snow, and then brutally beat him while he was helpless and handcuffed.

Chris was recently diagnosed with colon cancer. At this time we’ll refrain from sharing specific details about the condition, however know that the situation is very serious.</span>

<p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap;">This news is sudden so please note that if you have not heard from the family personally, hold tight from reaching for the phone. They are understandably overwhelmed with the situation and will make contact with friends and family in their own time and in their own way. </span>

<p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap;">As fathers ourselves, it is excruciating to imagine what is going through Chris’ mind and heart as he grapples with this.</span>

<p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap;"> </span>

<p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap;">But we know Chris, and you know Chris. This man is a unicorn. His gentle spirit, optimism, and warmth are matched with boundless strength and courage.</span>

<p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap;">During this time, he will take a medical leave from work and his partner, Amelia, will mostly close her practice. While we can’t make Chris’ cancer go away, we can support them while they center their life around Chris’ health and quality time with (and away from!) their toddler twins Hilary Joy and Lee.</span>

<p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap;">We are looking to raise $75,000 to pick up the slack and to alleviate the financial commitments they are making to keep Chris as resourced as possible. This will include integrated alternative treatments, major diet/supplement changes, essential retrofits to their place and, as his treatment progresses and energy depletes, professional help with childcare and domestic duties. Chris began treatment in late July, the effects of which compound as he progresses. He is in for a nine month journey that concludes with surgery, then recovery.  </span>

<p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;"><span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Arial;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap;">It's a long road ahead and we all need to do everything we can to support Chris and put his mind at ease, knowing that those dearest to him have his back. He needs to give this everything he’s got. </span>

<p>Our young nêhiyaw land defender, Nolan, passed away on July 3rd surrounded by his family, relatives, fellow warriors, loved ones, and ancestors. He spent the last two seasons of life at the Fairy Creek Blockade, standing up for the land and in solidarity with the local peoples (including Bill Jones) wanting to protect the forests, waters, and relatives.

<p>With the help from people on the ground and supporters, with the direction of Nolan’s family, this GFM is set up to provide financial relief for our young warriors family and relatives. <br /><br />All of the funds will go directly to funeral arrangements, travel, care services, living costs, child care and anything the family deem necessary for caring for Nolan and his loved ones. <br /><br />From Nolan’s family: “Nolan “Wondering Spirit” was passionate about life and sharing his knowledge of his Cree culture to those that crossed his path in life.<br /><br />Nolan’s last journey from his rooted home of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan was on April 5, 2021 to BC. Nolan was a gifted man, his cousin Matthew Morin described him as a Bear who loved and protected people close to him. Let’s honour his Spirit by showing compassion and always remember to have love and respect for Mother Earth.” <br /><br />Nolan (“Papi”) carries his spirit with such vigour, with endless laughter, and with fight against the injustices that plague our peoples as Natives. <br /><br />Nolan was a part of a group of young Native peoples on the frontline, and holding it down at almost every single camp over the course of 3-4 months. He not only brought himself and community with him, but he built it every single day he was present. His warrior spirit came from a place of compassion, understanding, and undeniable determination for a future of love. Nolan was a warrior who showed up when the call went out, and showed by example how to assert himself as a protector. He also showed all of us what it means to be a friend, a relative, and a leader that leaves no one behind. <br /><br />There are hundreds of people that Nolan influenced, and this work at the camps or on the frontlines would not have happened or been as powerful without Nolan. We will be carrying on that legacy Nolan demonstrated, and continue to stand up and speak truth - and act upon it.<br /><br />Remember, this is a time for grief and healing. Please respect the family’s privacy, along with the time needed for relatives, friends, and warriors to process. As Native peoples we have protocols around death, so respect what is being asked for Nolan’s spirit. Support Land Defender Nolan Young’s Family

The Little-Frey family's world has suddenly flipped upside down, since they received the news that their 2-year old son Elio has cancer. It is a rare form of cancer that begins in the liver, and Elio has a malignant tumour. After an MRI, it's been revealed that the cancer has spread. Elio's course of care involves at least 3 months of chemotherapy, and surgery. He will be going through an extremely rough process of being weakened and made ill from his treatments. They are hopeful, but the stark reality is that his prognosis is not known at this time. <em>[We will be posting occasional updates on Elio's condition, and posting new photos, so refer back to this page if you would like an update on how Elio is doing, as things unfold over time.]</em><br /><br />Elio's condition requires the family to remain in Vancouver for treatment at Children's Hospital, for an extended period of time, causing the family to relocate to Vancouver from Salt Spring Island. The reason we are raising money is to offset the family's costs of living while supporting Elio in Vancouver.<br /><br />Ben has been forced to leave his two jobs for the next 4 months at the very least: both parents need to be present so that someone is always with Elio, while the other has their hands full caring for 3 month old baby Sascha.<br /><br />They have been provided accommodation at Ronald McDonald House, but will incur costs from living away from home for so long. Ben and Brette are also under the financial pressure of maintaining payments and bills from life back home in Salt Spring.  Plus, they could be facing unknown future costs associated with long term treatment. <br /><br />We want Ben and Brette to be able to focus on keeping Elio as comfortable as possible, and not worry about mounting debt during this period. There are other ways of supporting them, but for those who have the means to contribute a donation, no matter how large or small, it will go towards some relief for them.
