<div>This year I will be giving it my all, participating in the Rachel Carson Trail Challenge. This 37 mile challenge is exactly that...challenging. One day - 15 hours - and well over 8000 ft of elevation up and 8000 ft of elevation down. Two years ago I barely got through the half version of this. Now it is time to try the full!

<div>More important than the actual trail event, last event (Homestead Challenge) I was able to raise over $1800 which was doubled through Thermo Fisher's 100% matching program. Those donations were split among 3 very worthy cancer research charities and in honor of three amazing people.

<div>The twenty-ninth annual Rachel Carson Trail Challenge will take place on June 20, 2026, the Saturday nearest the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. The Challenge is a 37-mile long, one-day, sunrise to sunset endurance hike on nearly the entire rugged Rachel Carson Trail. Unlike a footrace, the "challenge" is not to win, but to endure, to finish the hike in one day. This time, the Challenge starts in North Park at sunrise and ends 37 miles later in Harrison Hills Park. The deadline for finishing is sunset, 8:54 PM or 15 hours 4 minutes, whichever comes first.

<div>The Challenge has two dimensions: the first is to endure mile upon mile of tortuous hill climbing and descent in unpredictable weather conditions; the second is to stay on the trail without getting lost. Obviously, those who have hiked the trail before will have some advantage in maintaining the proper route.

<div>The Rachel Carson Trail is a "primitive" trail in the sense that no special grading or surfacing materials are used. While the trail is blazed with yellow blazes, there will be an occasional missing blaze where a tree has fallen or when you are following a logging road, a power line or gas line; there will be blow downs, washouts, poison ivy, nettles, bugs, loose gravel and rocks, gullies, and wet stream crossings. There are few switchbacks on the trail; many hills are quite steep and are traversed directly up and down. You must be prepared to expect the unexpected and think the unthinkable.

Hiking for Hope: Support Alzheimer's Research

<div>Adam Donathan was a lifelong resident of Wilmington, lover of the waters that surround us and spent his life on the Intracoastal Waterway as a commercial fisherman. The only thing he loved more than being out on the water was being a father to his two boys Cole and Reece. Cole started his freshman year, turning 15 on the day his father passed, September 16th. Reece started third grade this year. It will be a void for both of them that can never be filled. This account is set up for them.

<div>Adam cared for others and was always ready to lend a helping hand. He was a wonderful son, brother, father, athlete and friend. He never complained about his battle with Type I Diabetes that took its toll on his body. Despite his nearly lifelong dealing with diabetes and preference to work on his own, Adam was also a talented athlete. He was an amazing soccer player and shining member of Varsity Soccer for JT Hoggard High School and the  ‘79 Hammers travel team.  <span style="font-size:1.0625rem;">He checked on his friends during difficult  times, worked hard because of his passion for the waterways and made sure he offered his time to his boys- sports, camping, skateboarding, water sports and knowing they were loved. Like all of us, the thought of being gone after just 42 years on this earth was unfathomable.</span>

<div>On August 27th, EMS was called because he was having trouble breathing. He was diagnosed with pneumonia. They removed 1.2 liters of fluid from his chest and upon further examination of the fluid found infection and cancer cells. The cancer had taken over his left lung and it had collapsed. He was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. Within 2 1/3 weeks his battle was over.

<div>Adam will be missed by so many. There will never be another oyster season that we don’t mourn the loss of this phenomenal fisherman. Our memories of him will be at every oyster bed sighting, roast and every time we look out at the ICW.

Hi my name is Crystal and this is part of our story. <br />
Last year our 14 year old daughter was diagnosed with an inoperatible brain tumor.  The doctors said that the best option for her was to do radiation and chemo infusions.  So Kyla went through her 6 weeks of radiation at UW. It made her swell up and her hair fell out. She took it like a champ and kept her head held high!  Then she had her port put in before she started her year of chemo infusions. Every other week we drove up to Seattle children's hospital where she had chemo injected into her port. It made her sick. So sick. She would some times be down for 4-5 days. It was so hard watching her be so sick. Our poor sweet amazing beautiful kind daughter was so much stronger than me about all this.  Anybody that has been to Seattle children's hospital knows how hard it can be to go there and see all these sick kids. If you haven't been to a children's hospital of some sorts, it is heartbreaking to see how sick kids are. It starts to do something to you. It is truly sad. But Kyla wanted to bring smiles up there everytime she went! She would bring a stuffed animal of some sort and find a kid that was having a bad day or just looked like they needed it and give them something to try and cheer them up! She's that kinda kid! She was 1 treatment away from being done with her year of treatments when they wanted to do another MRI. The MRI showed that the chemo and radiation didn't work. The tumor had actually spread and increased in size. It was not the news we wanted to hear. The doctors didn't really have a strong back up plan either. They have the routine meds that she is on now but they do not have a confident answer to help her. She has been on hospice for about 2 1/2 months now. I was working up until we had her last MRI done. I took some time off of work to help take care of her and spend time with her. She can not be left alone anymore. She is so strong but she needs help with doing a lot of things now. We went from 2 incomes down to 1. Even though we feel like this is the most important thing to us, it doesn't stop the bills from coming in. It doesn't change that we still have responsibilities. My wonderful husband goes to work and tries to carry us as much as he can. But there is only so much one person can do. So the worry is on how to pay bills when we should be worried about how we are going to spend the days with her. It is hard to do anything because everything costs so much. We have looked for grants and help but there is not a lot of help for us because we have decent jobs. Anyone who knows us, knows that we don't ask for help. We have done our best to always take care of things. But they are getting tough. All we want to do is spend time with Kyla and do things with her but you can't when you have to worry about paying rent.  I know that everyone is having tough times and we appreciate anything that anyone can do for us. We hate asking for anyone to donate but we need help. We hope that this will help us to be able to focus on spending time with her.  Thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you in advance for your donation.<br><br>
