Help Sa’Moryia Heal – Family in Crisis After Tragedy

<p>My name is Kathleen Schlentz and this campaign is for my good friend Willie Ortiz. Everyday, 83 year-old Willie scours his town of East Hartford and neighboring towns for scrap metal. He loads up his truck, and sells it....for cat food! Now we are honoring the work that he has been doing in the Hartford and East Hartford, CT areas and helping him continue his mission.

<p>For the last 31 years, Willie has been feeding, spay, neutering and vaccinating stray and feral cats. He ventures out every night for feedings despite the rain, snow, freezing weather or his own health issues. He only misses nights when it could endanger the cats. On really bad nights, he can't even get to the cats, and on those nights they don't even come out for food.

<p>He spends his days collecting scrap metal to pay for these services, but as the cat population grows that is simply not enough.

<p>I have never met a more committed person, Willie unknowingly inspires me in so many ways. Knowing him has made my life better, just by doing what he does so effortlessly. He is a loving, caring, and honest man who believes very strongly in God and all of his goodness, despite the pain and suffering he sees. 
</p><br /><br />
<p>He is a Veteran of the U. S. Army, a husband of 63 years to his wife Aleja, father of two, grandfather of four and great grandfather of two. He loves all animals, but recognized the problem with the feral and stray cat population in and around the Hartford and East Hartford areas. When he started this 31 years ago he didn't know this was to be his mission in life. 
</p><br /><br />
<p>Presently he feeds 19 colonies (a total of 87 cats) of feral and stray cats. Every single night, (only missing nights when conditions would endanger the cats). 
</p>
<p>“If it snows more than three inches, I don’t go because I don’t want them getting their bellies wet, cold and possibly get sick. But I'll go the next morning and feed them double", <span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">says Willie.</span>
</p><br /><br />
<p>Willie's cats are all very healthy, because he makes sure they get what they need to have as good and healthy a life as possible. The life expectancy for a feral or stray cat living on the streets is about 
</p>
<p>5 1/2 years. Willie has cats he has been feeding for 15 years and longer. 
</p><br /><br />
<p>But the cat colonies are constantly changing, with new cats wandering in or getting dropped off by people that won't or can't care for them. Others getting hit by cars or not making it through the freezing cold New England winters. Willie makes sure that the newcomers get spayed and neutered as soon as he can trap them (in a "Have a Heart" trap, of course).
</p><br /><br />
<p><span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">He makes “cubbies” for the cats to keep warm in the snowy winters. They are frequently stolen and vandalized, so making more can be a full time job at times. </span>
</p><br /><br />
<p><span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">His friend Roberta, picks up pregnant cats and mama cats so they can give birth and raise their babies out of the cold and in a warm, safe environment. Once they are wined, she has them spayed, neutered and vaccinated. Now it's time to find them forever homes (if the mothers are adoptable she finds homes for them too). </span>
</p><br /><br />
<p><span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">Willie keeps his eyes open for friendly adoptable cats. Roberta will keep them for as long as needed to be sure they can live happily in a home. It is always the better choice to have friendly street cats live in a loving forever home. They live much longer, healthier lives.</span>
</p><br /><br />
<p><span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">Right now, the most important thing to Willie is to slow down the feral and stray cat population and that means getting all of them spayed and neutered as soon as possible. He knows this is the only real solution.</span>

<p>To pay for all of his efforts, Willie hunts for discarded scrap metal every single day. He gets a fair amount of people that have hear about him and his mission. Lastly, <span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">he has had connections with various businesses for years that so kindly donate scrap metal on a continuous basis. </span>
</p>
<p><span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">If there is anything that he can sell for a higher dollar, he sells it on Craigslist to make a bit more money for his cats. </span>
</p>
<p><span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">The price of scrap metal is at an all time low, so after hours of collecting scape metal, he may only receive $20.00 to $30.00 for a full truck load. Thank goodness for his generous doners! </span>

<div>UPDATE ONE YEAR LATER: (FROM Michelle (12/22/23) December 22nd… One year ago today… one year ago today, I thought I had lost my husband and best friend forever, when I got a call that you never want to receive. I was mentally preparing how to tell our kids that Daddy wouldn’t be home on Christmas, and that when they did get to see him next, he potentially was paralyzed for life after being hit by a car.

<div>My head was spinning with thoughts and fears,  hopes, prayers and postulates that everything will come out alright, in the end. With everything going on for the holiday, I had to work so hard to keep my mind from going to the dark side, and just try to stay in the moment for the sake of our kids.

<div>Between then and now, I cannot believe how much love and support that has occurred from all of our friends, family, neighbors, and church members. From cooking us meals, or donating to our Go Fund Me account, or shoveling and plowing whenever it snowed. I don’t know what makes me tear up more - thinking about how amazing our tribe is, or the fact that I’m immensely thankful that Luke has been recovering so well

<div>Fast forward one year and Luke has come so far. His leg and foot remain partially numb, and he still doesn’t have the strength or balance that he once had. Therefore he can’t do the type of work he used to do, of climbing up ladders and working on chimneys, BUT we are so damn thankful that he is able to do basic activities around the house and go for short walks along the creek with the kids, etc.

<div>UPDATE: (FROM MICHELLE 2/7/23) Hello everyone, I wanted to take a second and update you all on Luke's progress. He is doing wonderful and gaining more balance and continuing to recover every day. In fact, he made a video to give you all a special message from him to you personally. We hope you like it!

<div>So, his lacerations under his bum and the spinal incisions are healing nicely. His ribs are still broken but he can feel them now, so that's good! His tailbone remains broken which makes sitting for long periods a bit tricky BUT his spine is healing nicely so we are counting our blessings! His Neuro surgeon said last week that we should be able to take the brace off at the end of March and see if the 4 rods, surrounding the bursted vertebrae, are taking hold alright or not. If things look good, then he can begin getting his strength back! His left leg is still numb but gets random sensations from time to time so that's good because it means it's healing!

<div>He has upgraded from a walker to a quad-cane which he is proud of! And although his left leg tends to buckle when he's not being super careful, his physical therapist has been having him practice being able to walk independently for short periods during his sessions!

<div>As a family unit, we are doing okay. We're definitely thankful for our friends, family and worker's comp, to help us get through all of this. Luckily our medical bills have been covered so far which has been a blessing. But a special thanks to all of YOU who have helped with your donations, love and support. We are beyond thankful and just know that your donations have helped cover our bills since we are living off of half of what we were making previously, which hasn't been easy. But with your help we have been able to pay down our debt, so that there's less monthly demand, and to help pay for the kids to keep them busy and in sports, so that there's some form of normalcy for them, in all of this.

<div>ORIGINAL POST: On December 22, Luke was driving on the freeway and saw someone stuck in the snow on the side of the road. Because he is such a fantastic guy who loves to help others, he decided to stop to help her putting himself at risk. In the process, someone crashed into his truck, HIT HIM and then hit her car. This person then took off and never stopped to see if he was okay. It happened so fast that no one was able to get the driver's license plate number. Luke was rushed to the hospital and when the doctors heard what he had done to help another, got him into surgery immediately upon his arrival at the hospital. During his 8-hour surgery, it was found that he has damage to his lower spine and vertebrae, some broken ribs, a laceration, and a fractured spine. The doctors were able to accomplish what they had hoped in the surgery. They fused 3 vertebrae with rods and thankfully stabilized Lukes's condition. Luke is expected to be in the hospital for the next week and then go to a rehab center for up to 3 months. He will be in a body cast during this time to minimize movement while his spine heals.

<div>It is uncertain at this time how much mobility he will get back. We are postulating and praying that he recovers better and faster than expected.

<div>The funds raised will be used for Luke's medical bills which will be extensive as he does not have health insurance. It will also cover their monthly bills and other expenses until Luke is able to go back to work, which will be many months from now.

<div>I know that Luke and Michelle have many warm friends and family that will want to help them. When something like this happens I know the natural instinct is to help. I would like to take away any financial worry for them so they can focus on getting Luke fully recovered so he can be back with his family. They no longer feel safe in their home which creates a financial and emotional burden I don't want them to have to handle alone. <div>"On Monday December 12th, 2022 outside of my apartment in Uptown I was attacked and robbed. Two men in all black, wearing black ski masks lunged toward me and beat me up and took my belongings. Having a split second moment where I thought to myself how I was going to survive/die right in this moment I chose to fight.

<div>I’m 5’3 but I fought, made myself as big and loud as I possibly could but it was to no avail. These men pushed/kicked/punched me and I still fought. Once they got what they wanted they ran. Well I ran after them. I was able to catch them in their get away car but was too late they skidded off as I yelled and banged on their windows. Adrenaline pumping unable to understand/process the next minute neighbors from all around were calling the police and yelling from their apartment windows if I needed to call someone. All of a sudden one of the voices of a neighbor calls out to me ”their back! They are behind you!” immediately I see a man and a women jump into my car and steal it. As I run over to my car the women in the passenger seat flips me the bird as they peel off in my car.

<div>Within a minute or so nearly 5 squad cars are outside asking me all the questions. They notify me that this is the 7th car jacking of these individuals on that day and they have been following them thus the rapid response. I learned in minneapolis it is illegal for them to pursue (only mn state police can). After hours of updates I was able to have my ID and one credit card recovered. Whilst these criminals went joy riding and then stole an 8th vehicle before the police lost them again.

All I know is I’m a master at compartmentalizing and although not always the healthiest I will emotionally unpack this little by little. My items are all still missing. <div>Today is the first day that I’ve been alone to process what has happened and I cant. I am soo angry, I’m so sad. I need to find a new vehicle, move out, and get myself together to move forward. <strong>I am an essential worker whose and like all of us the last year has taken its. My partner of twenty-eight years died right when the pandemic began in January, I <br />injured my shoulders and my hours at work were cut. <br /><br />I was able to keep up with the mortgage <br />payment using a small inheritance and<br />my social security. Then George Floyd was killed. My house is located directly in back of the store where Mr. Floyd was<br />murdered. Between Wednesday and Thursday night some white supremacists and a group of protectors of the site had a gun battle in front of my house and bullets were fired through my front windows and into the walls. The insurance didn’t cover the cost of the windows and the walls.<br />There has been intermittent gunfire ever since. Too make maters worse I didn’t receive my social security in November which has made me behind by four months instead of two.<br /><br /> I love my house and my neighborhood<br />and I don’t want to lose it. Every woman in my family has owned property and I don’t want to be the first to lose mine.<br /><br /><br /></strong>

Jasper is one of a kind.  One and a half years old, born on a cat hoarded farm in Wisconsin that is riddled with feline diseases, he picked up the feline herpes virus immediately after birth.  A disease that can't cross to humans, the feline herpes virus, is extremely contagious and can range from mild to severe.  Jasper has the severe form.<br /><br />Jasper was taken from the farm by a girl claiming to run a cat rescue, but she also had a cat hoard.  The cats all had ringworm, a very contagious fungal skin infection, upper respiratory infections, broken bones,  low body weights, pneumonia, and many kittens were also blind.<br /><br />Jasper was the first cat rescued from that hoarder.  Morgan, his new mom, spent over $4500 in savings to save his life.  He was heavily medicated to bring infections down.  He was fed around the clock to put weight on.  His skin and fur were in terrible shape.<br /><br />Thanks to Morgan blowing the whistle on conditions in the home where she got Jasper, a group from MN were able to go rescue over 30 cats from the hoard and get them into rescues with budgets to provide the extensive vet care they needed to live.  However,  Morgan had no financial help with Jasper, but she was committed to doing whatever it took to help him.<br /><br />Unfortunately, right after COVID hit, Morgan escaped an abusive relationship and became homeless with her infant daughter.  Hiding from her Ex in government provided shelter, she found herself suddenly unable to provide for her young family.  The women's shelter she moved to wouldn't allow her cat to come.  Only her seizure service dog, her baby, and her few belongings.  She was desperate not to lose Jasper among all the other things she had recently lost.<br /><br />She reached out and I began to foster Jasper in my home for free to guarantee Morgan would get Jasper back once she got placed in affordable housing and back on her feet.<br /><br />Through generous donation we've been able to find out Jasper likely has feline herpes virus.  It caused severe injury and blindness to both eyes.  His left eyeball has been so damaged by infection it has either deflated or fallen out.  His right eye, still present, is a constant source of infections.  Both eyes are frequently infected with bacteria and drain into his sinuses and ears.<br /><br />He is mostly deaf.  The Vet suspects infection has destroyed his eardrum in one ear completely.  Both ears regularly fill both pus and blood from the draining of his infected eyes.  He has a permanent head tilt due to it.<br /><br />This fundraiser is to pay for Jasper life-changing and possibly life-saving eye surgery.  Dr Melso at Paws and Claws in Maple Grove heard Jaspers story, and graciously agreed to remove Jaspers eye(s) and close them permanently at a hugely discounted rate!  <br /><br />This should allow Jasper a healthy life of no more chronic eye and ear infections.   He will be able to navigate in his environment better.  Above all, Morgan will be getting a healthy cat back.  <br /><br />Jasper is an inspirational cat.  He's always purring despite the pain he is likely in.  He has been learning to trust human touch, and trust his senses (when not clogged with infection)  for navigation.  His skin infections are finally cleared and beautiful silky white fur is growing in.  His broken whiskers, growing longer.<br /><br />Please give what you can and share Jaspers story, and thank you!<br /><br />Stacey<br />Founder of Minnesota Cats! Jasper's Eye Surgery and Aftercare!

I am creating this account for my grandson Jackson Lyman (Jax).<br />Jax's best friend, his dog, Dallas was hit by an SUV last evening, Sunday, 26.<br />Jackson rescued Dallas a year ago from a shelter and they have become inseperable.  <br />The veterinarian says he will recover but he will need surgery, medicine and professional care. The biggest life threatening injury was loss of blood which they were able to get under control with IV's and oxygen. Now that the immediate danger is over they will have to deal with  multiple breaks  on the 'ankles' of both back legs. He will need two surgeries and pins. The toughest thing will be the ligament damage for mobility and at least 2 months of recovery time. <br />The road ahead for Dallas not only looks painful but very costly. The care will cost somewhere in the $10,000 range at this time. It would mean so much to Jackson and Dallas if you would like to contribute.<br />I will keep you updated on Dallas's progress.<br />Thank you so much for thinking of Jax and Dallas.<br /><br />Jackson and family can't thank you enough for all of your prayers and donations. We are very grateful for so much love and support.<br />Because of the extent of Dallas's injuries, the cost has continued to climb and is now expected to be between $16,000-$20,000 so we raised the amount we asked for to cover the additional costs to take some of the worry from Jax.
