***Please note: All funds donated will be evenly split between Maggie's Toronto and Holy Trinity to cover the costs of fire recovery and restoration. While we are in the process of assessing the full extent of the structural damage, air quality, electrical systems and residual damage, we're looking at total damages, including the costs of restoration, recovery and replacing program supplies, of at least $500,000.***

Late in the evening on Friday, September 8th a fire was set outside of our community space near Yonge and Dundas Square. We're deeply thankful to the passerby who called emergency services and Toronto Fire for their swift response. As a heritage site built in the mid-1800's, the fire resulted in significant damage to our building, program supplies and furniture. We were informed Saturday morning that had Fire Services arrived even 15 minutes later, we would've lost the entire building to this incident and are relieved that no one was injured.

As a result of Friday's fire, our building has experienced significant structural damage, our phone lines are down, and we will have to close our space for the foreseeable future. What furniture and program supplies were not lost to fire damage have been compromised by smoke, ash and soot in the aftermath. Despite a long rebuilding process ahead, Holy Trinity is working hard to offer comprehensive supports to community in the area including food, clothing, harm reduction supplies and much more.

At Maggie's, we are committed to taking the necessary steps to re-open and rebuild a beautiful, functional, dedicated space for sex workers in our community to co-create and access low-barrier, judgment-free services and supports, but we need your help to rebuild post-fire and get back on our feet.

Our organizations are as resilient as our communities are, and we'd deeply appreciate your support as we rebuild.

Holy Trinity Is a Safe Haven In The Heart of The City: Rapid Emergency Response Rooted In Community

COVID impacted the way in which Holy Trinity could support the homeless, underhoused and marginalized. We quickly shifted the focus from an indoor drop-in, which was temporarily halted due to the pandemic, to remaining open to the hundreds who came to our doors looking for support and food.

Unity Kitchen - We gathered a network of faith and community groups to prepare and serve 200 meals a day, in addition to warm clothing, hygiene equipment, and survival supplies. In essence, The Open Hours Program and People Presence transitioned into what became known as Unity Kitchen, a dedicated team of volunteers who served hundreds of meals to those in need. Eventually, a large encampment grew around our church with individuals searching for safety and shelter. We worked with other community leaders to ensure that all who came to Holy Trinity found the support they needed. The first no-barrier vaccine site took place at Holy Trinity.

Trinity CommUNITY Hub - After a summer of regrouping, we are reopening our doors to the most vulnerable. Our Trinity CommUNITY Hub will provide food/harm reduction, clothing and other supplies, along with supportive programming, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The Toronto Homeless Memorial remembers those who have died as a result of homelessness in Toronto. This project is maintained by Holy Trinity and a committee that supports its activities. A memorial service is held on the second Tuesday of each month at 12:00 PM outside the south door of Holy Trinity. Each month, the names of those who have died most recently on the streets of Toronto are said out loud, added to the memorial and those who wish to remember their friends or loved ones are invited to share their words with the crowd.

Staff and volunteers at Holy Trinity go above and beyond to provide care to the vulnerable in the downtown core. They also seek to advocate with and for the issues that face the marginalized.

Maggie's Toronto: Our March 2023 Expansion & May 2023 Renovation-

Our incredible staff team was thrilled to move into our new space in March of 2023, closing down for 5 weeks of renovations and redecorating through May and into June 2023 to relaunch a brand new, functional, beautiful space for our community to access drop-in programming, harm reduction supplies, comprehensive workshops, outreach and educational materials as well as local advocacy work around sx workers rights.

For the first time, we'd secured a space that made community feel at home, that accommodated our quickly-growing team of staff and programming. Because sx workers face so much discrimination and stigma across communities, many of our community members are barred from accessing other vital social supports: shelters, drop-ins, food banks and more, simply because of the work they do. This space was a refuge for community, but beyond this it marked a major expansion in our programming/services and proved to so many of us that Maggie's and our mission to improve the lives of sx workers in our communities could become something bigger than many of us had anticipated. For the first time we'd launched:

Case Management Programming - Offering long-term, wrap around supports to sex workers with legal/medical accompaniments, support securing ID, assistance navigating a wide range of institutions, major life decisions and struggles that come from the criminalization of our communities and widespread stigma against sx workers.

Drop In & Community Programming for Sx Working Parents to build community, address isolation and related discrimination against sx worker parents in our communities. Our drop in programming included healthy meals, access to harm reduction supplies, comprehensive workshops covering a wide range of issues on physical/mental/sexual health, parenting issues, etc.

Enhanced Street Outreach Programming - Providing harm reduction supplies to sx workers in Toronto's downtown core and downtown east, responding to the multitude of crises impacting our communities: the housing and shelter crisis, the opioid crisis, growing income inequality and more.

Targeted HIV/Harm Reduction Programming for LGBTQ2S+ communities - with a specific focus on outreach/engagement with male-identified sx workers looking for community, supports and harm reduction supplies related to HIV/STBBI's (Sexually Transmitted, Blood Borne Infections)

Targeted HIV/Harm Reduction & Community Building Programming for QT/BIPOC (Queer and Trans, Black and Indigenous People of Colour) communities - engaging Toronto's' ballroom community and expanding our outreach efforts to address the needs + concerns of Black sx workers and other racialized communities.

Pictured: Our Program Manager team at the Annual AIDS Candlelight Vigil in Barbara Hall Park.

We're proud to be part of such an incredible community and see the work for sx worker justice to be central to so many struggles for racial justice, labour rights, migrant rights, disability justice and LGBTQ liberation. The community who access our space come from so many walks of life and are impacted by a worsening housing crisis, an overcrowded and discriminatory shelter system, an opioid crisis and increasingly harsh laws/policing practices that target our communities. Spaces like Maggie's are critical for local sx workers seeking refuge, support and community in the midst of this. Partnering with Holy Trinity to offer centralized supports right in the heart of the city is key to reaching our community.

In the immediate aftermath of the fire and through September 24th, the staff team at Maggie's will be off. Collectively, we are heartbroken at the loss of the space, but we know that rebuilding and coming back into our home in this space is so important precisely because of the time, energy and care frontline staff at Maggie's have put into their work, the community members we serve and the organization more broadly.

HELP MAGGIES&HOLY TRINITY RECOVER FROM MAJOR FIRE

Hi, friends and family.

We need your support to save the sweetest, most simple member of our family, Lolo.

Lolo is Honor's first magical familiar. A precious, precarious little bean with cerebellar hypoplasia (she's a wobbly cat), a passion for crunchies (kibble), and perhaps a single braincell.

But last night, things got super scary and we had to rush her to the hospital at midnight in the middle of a raging thunderstorm to have emergency surgery to clear a urinary blockage.

The surgery saved her life, but the estimated cost of the procedure, along with post-operative care and medication will total at least $3,500.

This is where we need your help. We're reaching out to our friends to rally behind Lolo and help us cover the cost. Your contribution, no matter how small, will make a significant difference as we scramble to make sure she gets the care she needs..

How You Can Help:

Donate: Every dollar counts, and your generous contribution will directly fund Lolo's surgery and medical expenses.

Share: Even if you can't contribute financially, you can still make a significant impact by sharing Lolo's story with your friends, family, and on social media. The more people who know about Lolo, the closer we get to our goal.

Lolo's life has always been a little wobbly, but the last 12 hours have been a real whirlwind for all of us, and we appreciate any help you can offer.

Emergency Surgery for Our Sweet Lolo

On October 8th, 2020, our dear friend Satish Pillalamarri passed away from cancer, a few days after the birth of his and Shivangi's first child, Om. Satish lived an incredible life and spread joy and levity to all who knew him. His passing leaves a huge hole for everyone he touched.

Most unjustly, he leaves behind a young son that he did not get a chance to meet. This scholarship is to honor Satish's life, and create a scholarship fund for his son to have for college in 18 years. Upon completion, the money will be given to Shivangi to put in a suitable 529 plan for Om. Thank you for helping. RIP Satish, may your legacy live on through Shivangi and Om.

If you want to learn a little more about what a great guy Satish was, here is a tribute to Satish by one of his North Star Games' colleagues.

Stephanie Straw is a staple personality of the board game community. Her aspirations are to create quality board game content however, she's currently lacking much of the equipment needed to produce this content. We estimated she would be able to purchase the equipment necessary with $2500.

Stephanie has helped raise thousands of dollars for the Extra Life campaign and never asked for a dime herself. We simply want to help Stephanie buy a equipment to create content on her own and build her very own YouTube Channel. If anyone deserves the opportunity to do this, it's Stephanie. Help us raise this money for her so we can fully enable her to create her own content in the board game community.

Howdy friends, JR here. Amy and I have a dear friend who, through no fault of her own, finds herself needing some real help over the course of the next six weeks.

We're doing our best to take care of her as well as we can, and we really could use your help.

Right now, she needs these things:

$500 deductable to fix her car, so she can drive to work
$700 to cover her mortgage payment
$300 for various bills that need to get paid

I know it's a little strange to run this without telling you who it's for. She's a fairly public person who feels that she can't safely do this for herself.

Amy (my wife) and I are committed to helping her in every way we can, and right now that means asking for your help.

Please, if you have a few dollars to spare, donate it here. My family is doing our best to help a friend in need, and we'd love your help in doing it.

Thank you so much for donating to the Philando Castile Funds for Family Campaign!

This will be the last update I make with the campaign being active. We've reached an amazing amount and now, to expedite the funds being given to the family, I'll stop all further donations.

If you still want to donate, think about giving your money to the campaign run by Philando's sister, or giving money to the campaign for Diamond Reynolds and her daughter.

Thank you so much to everyone who involved who made this possible. You are appreciated, and loved.

- X

#PhilandoCastile
#BlackLivesMatter

Update 16:

Good morning everyone! I wanted to let you know I've spoken to a few news outlets on the campaign so far. One (The Star Tribune) has already come out.

Before I go any further I think it's necessary that I also set down, in my own words, why I started the campaign, so all of you know it directly from me.

The Black Lives Matter Movement started, for me specifically, after the execution of Trayvon Martin and America's support for letting his murderer off the hook.

I was 22 at the moment, and horrified. My family taught me America has a strong discontent towards black people, and black boys, but this the most vivid example of it I'd seen since I started paying attention to my surroundings.

If BLM started for me with Trayvon, Mike Brown & Ferguson kickstarted my need to speak on the subject. If a new generation of black minds were going to be vocal, this was the time.

Unfortunately, Mike would not be the last time many of us felt the need to speak up. We endured multiple tragedies including Sandra Bland, Rekia Boyd, Eric Garner, Ezell Ford, Tamir Rice, Autumn Steele, and the list goes one.

Each time, we poured out our emotions, heart, and frustration with an American system bent on disenfranchising its most vulnerable people.

We were incensed over the death of straight, gay, trans, LGBQT, and non-heteronormative loss of life within the black community, and then, minorities at large in the US.

We hurt. Who would hear us shouting into the void for our humanity? Who would listen?

One thing did change for me over the course of Trayvon, to now. I gained a following via social media that was interested in listening to what I had to say.

July 5, 2016. We watch the execution of Alton Sterling by Baton Rouge Police. Again, we were thrust into the unequal system of harassment and death we are subjected to within our country.

We thought it couldn't get any worse.

July 6th 2016. Falcon Heights. Minneapolis, Minnesota. Philando Castile is executed by officer, Jeronimo Tanez. Only a few hours after Alton. He shot four bullets into a man complying. A mother and her daughter were in the seats beside him.

We only have the capability to access the situation thanks to Miss Reynold's calm composure in a situation of death and police overreach.

A friend and I spoke to one another about starting up a campaign to help Alton's family. We were reluctant, unsure if our support would do anything to help.

A few hours later, we both saw Issa Rae took action (if you need to know more info on Issa Rae and the Alton Sterling GFM page, do a quick google search).

We commended her, and promised to support. We were both relieved, someone took the initiative, one that we were hesitant to undertake.

Again, black women stood at the forefront of helping our people, never hesitating to do what's necessary.

So when, I saw the facebook video of Philando's execution, I began speaking on the subject 11:49pm July 6th, 2016.

Link: https://twitter.com/XLNB/status/750914661554479104
--
As I spoke on the subject, I recounted the multiple times I'd seen people take advantage of the campaign route to scam people of money when tragedies like this occurred. In most cases, the family is so distraught they are not thinking about the immediacy of asking people for help, in the free fall of a loved ones death.

This time I didn't consult my friend.

At 12:49am on July 7th, 2016 I started the campaign. That also the date of the first time I posted a link on social media to the campaign.

Link: https://twitter.com/XLNB/status/750929838203076608
--

I started the campaign at $40,000, then brought it down to $20,000, as I thought I was asking too much. Once I posted it to social media, the campaign went viral and people quickly donated.

From that point, I raised the goal $20,000 every time the donations hit the $5000 mark before reaching its current goal.

Simultaneously, I reached out to the Castile family (specifically Valerie) via facebook. During that time a fake GoFundMe campaign claiming to be Philando's mother popped up, and was quickly taken down.

Also, a fake facebook page was set up purporting to be Valerie Castile.

It was only after a donator put me in contact with Allysza Castile, did I have my first contact with the family.

After that, I spoke to a cousin via email thanks to another mutual friend, and I was able to get in contact directly with Valerie when a friend of the family put me in contact.

I first spoke to Tracy Castile, then requested a facetime with Valerie to confirm it was the same woman I saw on CNN.

I'd made it clear in my updates on GoFundMe the only person I felt should have clearance to the money as the mother of Philando.

We discussed and then I set her down as a beneficiary.

Around this time, the campaign had hit around $125,000. It is not $180,000+

Now, many people will believe I am dishonest or a scammer no matter what I say or the receipts I update you with.

That's fine. I only care about the family being helped. This update is for the people who want to know a rough timeline.

It's also here so that, if anything comes up in any publication, you have depiction of the events to compare it with.

Love you all. Stay free.

- X

#PhilandoCastile
#BlackLivesMatter

Update 15:

I spoke with the Minneapolis Star Tribune to clear any misconceptions or worries about the campaign.

Read here: http://m.startribune.com/300k-collected-on-gofundme-pages-in-castile-s-name-are-they-legit/386487071/

Update 14:

As stated previously, all funds given to this GoFundMe will go directly to Valerie Castile, of the Castile family.

#BlackLivesMatter

Update 13:

Any comments that are disparaging or untruthful about the Castile family, Philando, and/or Diamond Reynolds will be deleted.

Racist/Conservative comments will be deleted as well. Plus, links to jibbery joo right wing websites will be deleted as well.

Remember, your favorite racist/conservative website is not the best place to get news and/or reality from.

Thank you!

Update 12:

Per request of the family, again, please donate directly to the GFM being done by Philando's sister. This is the confirmation from the GoFundMe email.

I want to reiterate, at this point, I have no longer have any control over the funds and where they go. They will go directly to Valerie Castile.

While I understand many people's concern with Lavish and her daughter (which is completely a good point to bring up), there is a GoFundMe set up specifically to donate to her.

I made it consistently clear throughout the campaign, this would go to Philando's immediate family, with his mother being the most immediate.

Again, in the name of being transparent, I'm letting you guys know everything.

‪#‎BlackLivesMatter‬

--
Update 10:

FYI, all money raised will be given to the family of Philando Castile. The beneficiary who will revive this money is Valerie Castile, Philando's mother.

Thank you.

Update 9:

After speaking with Valerie Castile (mother of Philando Castile) please feel free to either support this GoFundMe page or the GoFundMe page started by Philado's sister:

Link: https://www.gofundme.com/2d5wd5g

--
Update 8:

I have great news for you guys! Valerie Castile and I just spoke. I've now set up the first step for the beneficiary process for the #PhilandoCastile Funds For Family Campaign.

All money raised will go to the family of Philando. I realize this will not bring him back, but I'm happy I (and you all) chipped in to help them during this important time. Thank you.

#BlackLivesMatter

Update 7:

(Updates 1-6 you can find below. They will begin after the section labeled "Intro." I am putting the update 7 at the top so you know what I'll be doing next.)

How are you doing everyone! More than likely, the campaign will hit 100K soon. Thank you all very much for making this possible and helping the family of Philando Castille.

- Here's what I will do next. I won't raise the goal any higher without permission from the family.

- I will reach out to contact Valerie Castile and/or her representative to set her as the beneficiary of the campaign. After speaking with her I will confirm whether or not I will continue the campaign.

- While I know people have spoke to me about using funds for Lavish Reynolds and their daughter (which is 100% important) I cannot dictate what the family ultimately chooses to do with the money. That's not my place. I only wanted to raise money to help them.

- I want to make sure Valerie Castile, ultimately, is the beneficiary attached to this campaign. I believe and uplift black mothers, and if I there is one choice I will make, I want to make sure she is the person who has control over the funds.

- I will use the time after I post this, from this point forward, towards reaching out to her so I can begin getting the information necessary to set her down as the beneficiary.

Thank you!
--
Intro:

We lost another precious life. This time in Falcon Heights.

They stopped #PhilandoCastile over a broken tail light, then shot him as he went for his license. He is now dead.

Left behind are his family, his girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, and his daughter.

They shot him several times in front of his girlfriend and daughter. His girlfriend then recorded what happened via FB live.

He was shot after he complied with law by informing the police that he had a firearm and license to carry.

You can read more info here: https://twitter.com/i/moments/750914733155373056

All funds will go to Philando's family.

If you want to help, this is how.
#BlackLivesMatter
#PhilandoCastile
#FalconHeightsShooting
--

Update 1: For anyone checking in, my name is Xavier Burgin (@XLNB via twitter). I've spoken up on police violence and the issues we face in the past, but this time, I want to try and use my platform to help in a tangible way as well.

You can see info on me here:
https://twitter.com/XLNB/status/750914661554479104

I want to make sure I'm completely transparent and honest as I curate this GoFundMe. Please feel free to reach out to me, and ask questions.

As I said before, I will keep none of these funds, once I'm able to get in contact with the family of Philando Castile and confirm it's them, I will send all funds that are raised here to them.

I will also use the update function to keep you up to date with all information.

Thank you!
--

Update 2: A GoFundMe by Philando's sister, Moni, is up. It is confirmed it is his sister. If you feel more comfortable donating to that one. Please do! I will keep this one going as well!

Link: https://www.gofundme.com/2d5wd5g
--

Update 3: In two days we have hit 19K, putting us right at the 20K goal. Now, I'm going to raise the goal to 40K, let's help out the family of Philando as much as possible!
--

Update 4: Thank you so much! We are already going to hit 40K so I'm raising the goal up to $60K for the family now!
--

Update 5: As we reach 60K threshold I'll be raising the goal to 80K now.

For any questions you have be sure to check the updates section of the campaign for answers!

Also, if you feel more comfortable donating directly to his sister, the link to her GFM is in this description above!
--

Update 6: Now that we are reachin 80K I will raise the goal to 100K. This will be the last time I raise it!

Last summer myself and Marineland Animal Defense went to court to defend against an attempt by the captive animal facility, Marineland Canada, to get an injunction and stop all demonstrations on site - forever.

We fought, defeated two contempt motions, 9 of their 14 points of relief and protected the ability for everyone to demonstrate on site. However, a Judge still awarded Marineland a $10,000 cost order against myself and Marineland Animal Defense. Why just me? During cross examination and in the face of an attempt for a contempt motion, I refused to name any other MAD organizer, supporter, donor, marshall, etc. This ensured that no one else would be sued and it was a risk I took hoping that when the time came to ask for support it would be there.

Fast forward to June 2014 and we go back to court again on June 16th to defend against an attempt by Marineland Canada to revise and/or create a new order restricting the ability of demonstrators to chant, talk, or make appeals to park goers. At the exact same time Marineland Canada is now enforcing their previous cost order and bringing forward garnishment orders. We need to act and we need to act fast!

Although $10,000 means next to nothing to Marineland Canada - which is reported to spend $4 Million/Year on advertising alone - it gives them significant leverage in the court room and also provides them with another weapon to punish me with. We are hoping to raise the funds to get rid of this cost order and also to successfully defend ourselves on June 16th - which would mean on June 17th we would be back to a position of strength after 19 months of aggressive civil litigation from Marineland.

We've kept organizing, kept demonstrating and kept the pressure on and this latest round of aggression from Marineland can be traced back as their response to the overwheming support of our massive opening day "March on Marineland." With your support we will keep moving forward!

*We are asking folks to keep their donations "anonymous" as this is not information we share publicly, or with Marineland (who've asked for it and been denied in the past).

If anyone would like to make an offline donation please contact us at [email redacted]. We can also accept paypal/email transfers to that address and we will cycle them up on here as "offline donations."
