<div>Late in the evening on Friday, September 8th a fire was set outside of our community space near Yonge and Dundas Square. We're deeply thankful to the passerby who called emergency services and Toronto Fire for their swift response. As a heritage site built in the mid-1800's, the fire resulted in significant damage to our building, program supplies and furniture. We were informed Saturday morning that had Fire Services arrived even 15 minutes later, we would've lost the entire building to this incident and are relieved that no one was injured.

<div>As a result of Friday's fire, our building has experienced significant structural damage, our phone lines are down, and we will have to close our space for the foreseeable future. What furniture and program supplies were not lost to fire damage have been compromised by smoke, ash and soot in the aftermath. Despite a long rebuilding process ahead, Holy Trinity is working hard to offer comprehensive supports to community in the area including food, clothing, harm reduction supplies and much more.

<div>At Maggie's, we are committed to taking the necessary steps to re-open and rebuild a beautiful, functional, dedicated space for sex workers in our community to co-create and access low-barrier, judgment-free services and supports, but we need your help to rebuild post-fire and get back on our feet.

<div><strong>Holy Trinity Is a Safe Haven In The Heart of The City: Rapid Emergency Response Rooted In Community</strong>

<div>COVID impacted the way in which Holy Trinity could support the homeless, underhoused and marginalized. We quickly shifted the focus from an indoor drop-in, which was temporarily halted due to the pandemic, to remaining open to the hundreds who came to our doors looking for support and food.

<li><strong>Unity Kitchen </strong>- We gathered a network of faith and community groups to prepare and serve 200 meals a day, in addition to warm clothing, hygiene equipment, and survival supplies. In essence, The Open Hours Program and People Presence transitioned into what became known as Unity Kitchen, a dedicated team of volunteers who served hundreds of meals to those in need. Eventually, a large encampment grew around our church with individuals searching for safety and shelter. We worked with other community leaders to ensure that all who came to Holy Trinity found the support they needed. The first no-barrier vaccine site took place at Holy Trinity.

<li><strong>Trinity CommUNITY Hub</strong> - After a summer of regrouping, we are reopening our doors to the most vulnerable. Our Trinity CommUNITY Hub will provide food/harm reduction, clothing and other supplies, along with supportive programming, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
</li>
<li><strong>The Toronto Homeless Memorial</strong> remembers those who have died as a result of homelessness in Toronto. This project is maintained by Holy Trinity and a committee that supports its activities. A memorial service is held on the second Tuesday of each month at 12:00 PM outside the south door of Holy Trinity. Each month, the names of those who have died most recently on the streets of Toronto are said out loud, added to the memorial and those who wish to remember their friends or loved ones are invited to share their words with the crowd.

<div>Staff and volunteers at Holy Trinity go above and beyond to provide care to the vulnerable in the downtown core. They also seek to advocate with and for the issues that face the marginalized.

<div>Our incredible staff team was thrilled to move into our new space in March of 2023, closing down for 5 weeks of renovations and redecorating through May and into June 2023 to relaunch a brand new, functional, beautiful space for our community to access drop-in programming, harm reduction supplies, comprehensive workshops, outreach and educational materials as well as local advocacy work around sx workers rights.

<div>For the first time, we'd secured a space that made community feel at home, that accommodated our quickly-growing team of staff and programming. Because sx workers face so much discrimination and stigma across communities, many of our community members are barred from accessing other vital social supports: shelters, drop-ins, food banks and more, simply because of the work they do. This space was a refuge for community, but beyond this it marked a major expansion in our programming/services and proved to so many of us that Maggie's and our mission to improve the lives of sx workers in our communities could become something bigger than many of us had anticipated. For the first time we'd launched:

<li><strong>Case Management Programming - </strong>Offering long-term, wrap around supports to sex workers with legal/medical accompaniments, support securing ID, assistance navigating a wide range of institutions, major life decisions and struggles that come from the criminalization of our communities and widespread stigma against sx workers.

<li><strong>Drop In &amp; Community Programming for Sx Working Parents </strong>to build community, address isolation and related discrimination against sx worker parents in our communities. Our drop in programming included healthy meals, access to harm reduction supplies, comprehensive workshops covering a wide range of issues on physical/mental/sexual health, parenting issues, etc.

<li><strong>Enhanced Street Outreach Programming - </strong>Providing harm reduction supplies to sx workers in Toronto's downtown core and downtown east, responding to the multitude of crises impacting our communities: the housing and shelter crisis, the opioid crisis, growing income inequality and more.
</li>
<li><strong>Targeted HIV/Harm Reduction Programming for LGBTQ2S+ communities - </strong>with a specific focus on outreach/engagement with male-identified sx workers looking for community, supports and harm reduction supplies related to HIV/STBBI's (Sexually Transmitted, Blood Borne Infections)
</li>
<li><strong>Targeted HIV/Harm Reduction &amp; Community Building Programming for QT/BIPOC (Queer and Trans, Black and Indigenous People of Colour) communities - </strong>engaging Toronto's' ballroom community and expanding our outreach efforts to address the needs + concerns of Black sx workers and other racialized communities.

<div>We're proud to be part of such an incredible community and see the work for sx worker justice to be central to so many struggles for racial justice, labour rights, migrant rights, disability justice and LGBTQ liberation. The community who access our space come from so many walks of life and are impacted by a worsening housing crisis, an overcrowded and discriminatory shelter system, an opioid crisis and increasingly harsh laws/policing practices that target our communities. <strong>Spaces like Maggie's are critical for local sx workers seeking refuge, support and community in the midst of this. Partnering with Holy Trinity to offer centralized supports right in the heart of the city is key to reaching our community. </strong>

<div>In the immediate aftermath of the fire and through September 24th, the staff team at Maggie's will be off. Collectively, we are heartbroken at the loss of the space, but we know that rebuilding and coming back into our home in this space is so important precisely because of the time, energy and care frontline staff at Maggie's have put into their work, the community members we serve and the organization more broadly.

Emergency Surgery for Our Sweet Lolo

<div>I am Alex Norris, creator of the webcomic <em>Webcomic Name</em>. I am here to ask for help fighting a legal case to protect my ownership of <em>Webcomic Name</em>, so that I can continue to make my comics for my audience around the world.

<div>I have been fighting this case since 2019. It arose out of an agreement to make a boardgame based on my webcomic in 2017 but the publishing company has used this as an opportunity to take <em>all</em> of my intellectual property, and has even claimed ownership of <em>Webcomic Name</em> as a whole. I can't go into more detail here, but the details of the case are publicly available to read online.

<div>In 2023, the publishing company have launched a baseless SECOND lawsuit against me. I refuse to let them try to intimidate me. However, it does mean that I am having to raise even more in legal fees that I originally thought- and I feel this is why they are doing it, to try to silence me as a small individual artist. Again, this case is publicly available to read online. With your help, I hope to fund all the work to end this for good soon.

<div>I made the first "oh no" comics in 2015, and then created Webcomic Name in 2016, originally as a parody of relatable webcomics. For the past 9 years, the format has been the same: three panels long, featuring a silly pink blob, and ending every time with the punchline "oh no". Over time, it has increasingly become a commentary on issues close to my heart: social justice, gender and sexuality, internet culture, and what it means to be an artist on the internet.

<div>I love making this webcomic, and I am so thrilled it has been amazingly popular with the internet and beyond. I am proud to have found something my readers love reading as much as I love making!

<div>These lawsuits was filed in the U.S. and it has been incredibly expensive. I am a queer Welsh artist based in the UK, from a working-class background. As you can imagine, this whole thing has been devastating to my mental health, and a massive struggle for the past 5 years. I have never been through anything like this before. I haven't posted so much recently, and this is why. It has had an overwhelming effect on my life, on my ability to work, and my ability to enjoy things day by day.

<div>I am proud to have funded my way through this case so far through my own hard work, and the support of my incredible readers through my online shop, Patreon and appearances at comic conventions. Legal fund for Alex Norris "oh no" comics

On October 8th, 2020, our dear friend Satish Pillalamarri passed away from cancer, a few days after the birth of his and Shivangi's first child, Om.  Satish lived an incredible life and spread joy and levity to all who knew him. Stephanie Straw is a staple personality of the board game community. Her aspirations are to create quality board game content however, she's currently lacking much of the equipment needed to produce this content. We estimated she would be able to purchase the equipment necessary with $2500. <br /><br />Stephanie has helped raise thousands of dollars for the Extra Life campaign and never asked for a dime herself. We simply want to help Stephanie buy a equipment  to create content on her own and build her very own YouTube Channel. I wanted to let you know I've spoken to a few news outlets on the campaign so far. One (The Star Tribune) has already come out. <br /><br />Before I go any further I think it's necessary that I also set down, in my own words, why I started the campaign, so all of you know it directly from me. <br /><br />The Black Lives Matter Movement started, for me specifically, after the execution of Trayvon Martin and America's support for letting his murderer off the hook. <br /><br />I was 22 at the moment, and horrified. My family taught me America has a strong discontent towards black people, and black boys, but this the most vivid example of it I'd seen since I started paying attention to my surroundings. <br /><br />If BLM started for me with Trayvon, Mike Brown &amp; Ferguson kickstarted my need to speak on the subject. If a new generation of black minds were going to be vocal, this was the time. <br /><br />Unfortunately, Mike would not be the last time many of us felt the need to speak up. We endured multiple tragedies including Sandra Bland, Rekia Boyd, Eric Garner, Ezell Ford, Tamir Rice, Autumn Steele, and the list goes one. <br /><br />Each time, we poured out our emotions, heart, and frustration with an American system bent on disenfranchising its most vulnerable people. <br /><br />We were incensed over the death of straight, gay, trans, LGBQT, and non-heteronormative loss of life within the black community, and then, minorities at large in the US. <br /><br />We hurt. Who would hear us shouting into the void for our humanity? Who would listen? <br /><br />One thing did change for me over the course of Trayvon, to now. I gained a following via social media that was interested in listening to what I had to say. <br /><br />July 5, 2016. We watch the execution of Alton Sterling by Baton Rouge Police. Again, we were thrust into the unequal system of harassment and death we are subjected to within our country. <br /><br />We thought it couldn't get any worse. <br /><br />July 6th 2016. Falcon Heights. Minneapolis, Minnesota. Philando Castile is executed by officer, Jeronimo Tanez. Only a few hours after Alton. He shot four bullets into a man complying. A mother and her daughter were in the seats beside him. <br /><br />We only have the capability to access the situation thanks to Miss Reynold's calm composure in a situation of death and police overreach. <br /><br />A friend and I spoke to one another about starting up a campaign to help Alton's family. We were reluctant, unsure if our support would do anything to help. <br /><br />A few hours later, we both saw Issa Rae took action (if you need to know more info on Issa Rae and the Alton Sterling GFM page, do a quick google search). <br /><br />We commended her, and promised to support. We were both relieved, someone took the initiative, one that we were hesitant to undertake. <br /><br />Again, black women stood at the forefront of helping our people, never hesitating to do what's necessary. <br /><br />So when, I saw the facebook video of Philando's execution, I began speaking on the subject 11:49pm July 6th, 2016. <br /><br />Link: <a href="https://twitter.com/XLNB/status/750914661554479104" target="_blank" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://twitter.com/XLNB/status/750914661554479104</a><br />--<br />As I spoke on the subject, I recounted the multiple times I'd seen people take advantage of the campaign route to scam people of money when tragedies like this occurred. In most cases, the family is so distraught they are not thinking about the immediacy of asking people for help, in the free fall of a loved ones death. <br /><br />This time I didn't consult my friend. <br /><br />At 12:49am on July 7th, 2016 I started the campaign. Once I posted it to social media, the campaign went viral and people quickly donated. <br /><br />From that point, I raised the goal $20,000 every time the donations hit the $5000 mark before reaching its current goal. <br /><br />Simultaneously, I reached out to the Castile family (specifically Valerie) via facebook. During that time a fake GoFundMe campaign claiming to be Philando's mother popped up, and was quickly taken down. <br /><br />Also, a fake facebook page was set up purporting to be Valerie Castile. <br /><br />It was only after a donator put me in contact with Allysza Castile, did I have my first contact with the family. <br /><br />After that, I spoke to a cousin via email thanks to another mutual friend, and I was able to get in contact directly with Valerie when a friend of the family put me in contact. <br /><br />I first spoke to Tracy Castile, then requested a facetime with Valerie to confirm it was the same woman I saw on CNN. <br /><br />I'd made it clear in my updates on GoFundMe the only person I felt should have clearance to the money as the mother of Philando. <br /><br />We discussed and then I set her down as a beneficiary. <br /><br />Around this time, the campaign had hit around $125,000. It is not $180,000+<br /><br />Now, many people will believe I am dishonest or a scammer no matter what I say or the receipts I update you with. <br /><br />That's fine. I only care about the family being helped. #PhilandoCastile Funds For Family

<p>Last summer myself and Marineland Animal Defense went to court to defend against an attempt by the captive animal facility, Marineland Canada, to get an injunction and stop all demonstrations on site - forever. </p>
<p>We fought, defeated two contempt motions, 9 of their 14 points of relief and protected the ability for everyone to demonstrate on site. However, a Judge still awarded Marineland a $10,000 cost order against myself and Marineland Animal Defense. Why just me? During cross examination and in the face of an attempt for a contempt motion, I refused to name any other MAD organizer, supporter, donor, marshall, etc. This ensured that no one else would be sued and it was a risk I took hoping that when the time came to ask for support it would be there. </p>
<p>Fast forward to June 2014 and we go back to court again on June 16th to defend against an attempt by Marineland Canada to revise and/or create a new order restricting the ability of demonstrators to chant, talk, or make appeals to park goers. At the exact same time Marineland Canada is now enforcing their previous cost order and bringing forward garnishment orders. We need to act and we need to act fast! </p>
<p>Although $10,000 means next to nothing to Marineland Canada - which is reported to spend $4 Million/Year on advertising alone - it gives them significant leverage in the court room and also provides them with another weapon to punish me with. We are hoping to raise the funds to get rid of this cost order and also to successfully defend ourselves on June 16th - which would mean on June 17th we would be back to a position of strength after 19 months of aggressive civil litigation from Marineland. </p>
<p>We've kept organizing, kept demonstrating and kept the pressure on and this latest round of aggression from Marineland can be traced back as their response to the overwheming support of our massive opening day "March on Marineland." With your support we will keep moving forward! </p>
