It falls on their fourth wedding anniversary, and we can't think of a better day to gather in his name.

<div><strong>The past two days post surgery have brought a lot of ups and downs.</strong> As expected, the surgery was hard on James's body, so we are working with his doctors on a better pain management plan and on getting him the nutrients he needs to recover.

<div><strong>After 5.5 hours, the team was able to remove the tumor from James's spine.</strong> He is awake and stable, and will be monitored in the hospital for a few days. Recovery will take a couple of months, and his other cancer treatments are paused for the next few weeks while he heals.

<div><strong>James is headed into surgery today. </strong>After one night home together, James was admitted again last night, this time at City of Hope. He is scheduled for emergency surgery today to remove a tumor on his lumbar spine. The original plan was radiation alone, but his care team pivoted. The goal is a near-complete removal so James can preserve lower body function, stay mobile, and get relief from the pain the tumor has been causing. He is ready.

Support James Byun Through Stage 4 Cancer

<div>On Sunday May 4th 2025, my brother Leon Zoltzman became the victim of a horrific and senseless act of violence at Featherly Regional Park in Yorba Linda, California.

<div>While attending a peaceful and family gathering at a VW (volkswagen) picnic/camp event with his VW buddies, Leon was the victim of a heinous act of violence along with his dear friend, Jamie Benn, who was also a victim of this horrific crime.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Leon was first struck by a truck—suffering serious injuries to his back, fractures from his lumbar spine L1-L5 and Thoracic T3 and T12— seconds later, he was shot on the right side of his chest, pierced across his chest missing his heart, the bullet lodged into his left armpit. His right forearm shattered due to blocking the gunshot, missing a major artery by millimeters, a gunshot that was directed towards his head. Third bullet grazed his left calf. The person who attacked him was someone Leon knew, but they had no personal relationship or interaction. The shooter was targeting someone else— and Leon happened to be standing at the wrong place at the wrong time. Leon had no part in the conflict and happened to be a bystander caught in the violence.

<div>Leon is now in the hospital, undergoing emergency treatment and preparing for multiple surgeries. His recovery will be long, painful, and uncertain.
</div>

<div>Leon is more than a victim—he’s a devoted fiancé and a loving father to two children. This tragedy has completely disrupted their lives and placed a heavy emotional and financial burden on his family.
