<div>James Ahrham Byun peacefully passed in his sleep next to the love of his life, Hannah, on Sunday, August 30, 2026.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We will hold a funeral mass for James on Wednesday, September 16th at 10:00 a.m. at <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/abBbFFz5t6VYosjN9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Holy Family Church</a>, 1501 Fremont Ave, South Pasadena, CA. It falls on their fourth wedding anniversary, and we can't think of a better day to gather in his name.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Any further donations will go toward funeral and memorial expenses, and toward giving the family room to grieve without the weight of those costs.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thank you for everything you have given the Byun &amp; Haan family, in every form it took. James was surrounded by love, and that was true because of all of you. We are grateful beyond what we can put here.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>UPDATE #12: 8/20/26 12:00 PM</strong>
</div>
<div><strong>James was discharged two days ago and is recovering at a temporary rental in Altadena. </strong>He’s sleeping through the night, his incision is healing, and he and Hannah are getting into a rhythm with pain management at home.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Your support made this stretch possible. Thank you for showing up for Hannah &amp; James!
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>UPDATE #11: 8/16/26 7:30 AM</strong>
</div>
<div><strong>The past two days post surgery have brought a lot of ups and downs.</strong> As expected, the surgery was hard on James's body, so we are working with his doctors on a better pain management plan and on getting him the nutrients he needs to recover.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>His spirits are as positive as ever and he is fighting. It is going to be a long recovery, but we know he can do it.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thank you for the continuous support and prayers.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>UPDATE #10: 8/14/26 9:00 AM</strong>
</div>
<div><strong>After 5.5 hours, the team was able to remove the tumor from James's spine.</strong> He is awake and stable, and will be monitored in the hospital for a few days. Recovery will take a couple of months, and his other cancer treatments are paused for the next few weeks while he heals.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thank you for every donation, prayer, and message. They have carried this family. Funds continue to go toward medical bills and everyday expenses while James recovers at City of Hope. More soon!
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>UPDATE #9: 8/13/26 1:15 PM </strong>
</div>
<div><strong>James is headed into surgery today. </strong>After one night home together, James was admitted again last night, this time at City of Hope. He is scheduled for emergency surgery today to remove a tumor on his lumbar spine. The original plan was radiation alone, but his care team pivoted. The goal is a near-complete removal so James can preserve lower body function, stay mobile, and get relief from the pain the tumor has been causing. He is ready.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>What he’s asking for right now are prayers for a smooth surgery and recovery. For anyone wondering how else to help: your contributions go directly toward James and Hannah’s medical costs and the everyday expenses that don’t pause during a hospital stay. If you’ve already given, thank you! Please consider sharing the page today so more people can hold them up. We’ll post again as soon as we have news.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>UPDATE #8: 8/11/26 9:00 PM</strong>
</div>
<div><strong>After 15 nights and 16 days, James has been discharged from the hospital! </strong>Temporary housing has been secured. We also received news that James qualifies for immunotherapy and other targeted therapies.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thank you for supporting James &amp; Hannah!
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>UPDATE #7: 8/9/26 3:00 PM</strong>
</div>
<div><strong>James finished his first round of chemo, and we’re hoping he can be discharged next week</strong>. The next hurdle is finding a temporary place for him and Hannah to stay while he receives outpatient treatment. James said early on that the hardest part of this journey was still ahead. He was right. It’s starting now.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Two ways you can help: if you know of short-term housing near between Northeast LA and Monrovia, please reach out. And if you’re able to give or share this page again, it goes directly toward housing, travel, and the costs that come with outpatient care.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thank you for your continued support!
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>UPDATE #6: 8/7/26 7:30 PM </strong>
</div>
<div>“<strong>We're on day 2 of chemo. James is feeling great. </strong>No nausea. No upset stomach. Tiredness here and there but he's fighting. If all goes well, we're hoping to finally be discharged next week and will continue treatment outpatient along with hopefully - adding more ‘let's kick cancer ass’ drugs to our treatment plan. Every night James
</div>
<div>and I talk about how incredibly, incredibly grateful we are for our community and all the love, support we have been shown these past two weeks... To everyone bringing us food, doing our laundry, sending us words of encouragement, donating to our gofundme, crying with us, praying with us, laughing with us, processing with us, just everything... thank you. Thank you so much because we would not have survived these couple weeks without you. Some days are good and some days are hard but we keep on fighting with our heads up high for the community who have so selflessly carried us through this time. We love you.

<div><strong>UPDATE #5: 8/6/26 9:00 AM</strong>
</div>
<div>Here’s a message from James (8/5/26 10PM)
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>"I just wanted to thank everyone for all the supportive messages. I’m in a great headspace right now and am ready to start the fight tomorrow. I have an amazing team of doctors, and my village has been unbelievable, and I don’t know how I’ll ever be able to repay them. I apologize if I haven’t responded to any messages, but I have been reading them, and it’s been keeping my spirits high. In the meantime, please keep Hannah and me in your prayers, as the hardest part of my journey is about to begin. I love you all.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>

<div><br />
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>James is fighting the infection well, and chemo starts Thursday, August 6th.</strong> His pain plan is finally working, and he now has outdoor privileges to get some sun and fresh air.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>James and Hannah have been so strong through all of it.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We're only nine days in. Please keep sharing, praying, and sending messages. Hannah reads every single one of them to James.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>UPDATE #3: 8/3/26 1:20 PM </strong>
</div>
<div><strong>Chemo is on hold while James fights an infection. </strong>We're hopeful he can start within the week, and we'll share the news the moment he does.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>James and Hannah have felt every donation, every share, every message. Support has poured in from every corner of their lives, and from strangers who simply chose to care. Thank you!
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>It's going to be a journey. Please keep James in your thoughts this week, and keep the support coming!
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>UPDATE #2: 8/2/26 6:00 PM</strong>
</div>
<div>Wow. In less than four hours, we reached our initial goal. Thank you for every donation, every share, and every message of support. While we've reached our original goal, this is only the beginning. We don't yet know what the road ahead will bring, so we'll be keeping this page open. Any additional support will go toward the medical expenses and care still to come.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Tomorrow (August 3rd), James begins chemo.</strong> He and Hannah can start this journey knowing they are not facing it alone. They are surrounded by friends, family, and even strangers who have shown up with so much love, encouragement, and support.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thank you for standing with James and Hannah.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>UPDATE #1: 8/2/26 2:10 PM </strong>
</div>
<div>If you know James Ahrham Byun, you've seen him smile with his eyes and felt the warmth of his big heart. James is a loving son, brother, husband, son-in-law, everyone's favorite uncle, and a veteran who served our country for 11 years.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>This week, our world was turned upside down when James was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of stage 4 stomach cancer.</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>James and Hannah are facing this with the same strength and love they've always given so kindly and abundantly to others. And if you know Hannah, you know exactly what that means. She's the person who fixes problems before you even know you have them and shows up without being asked. She has spent her whole life taking care of everyone around her. Now it's our time to show her what that feels like.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The road ahead comes with real costs: treatment, medication, and everyday living expenses like rent, utilities, and household bills while James focuses on his health. For any family, a burden like this can feel almost insurmountable.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Now it's our turn to show up for James and Hannah. Here's how:</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<ul>
<li><strong>Give, if you can.</strong> Every contribution, no matter the size, allows James and Hannah to focus on what matters most: time together with the people they love.
</li>
<li><strong>Share this page. </strong>If you're unable to donate, spreading the word means just as much.
</li>
<li><strong>Leave a note of encouragement. </strong>Messages of support mean more to James and Hannah than you may realize.
</li>
<li><strong>Keep them in your thoughts and prayers.</strong> Positive thoughts carry real weight. Everything helps!
</li>
</ul>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thank you for surrounding this family with love, and for giving back to James &amp; Hannah who have given so much to others.

Support James Byun Through Stage 4 Cancer

<div>On Sunday May 4th 2025, my brother Leon Zoltzman became the victim of a horrific and senseless act of violence at Featherly Regional Park in Yorba Linda, California.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>While attending a peaceful and family gathering at a VW (volkswagen) picnic/camp event with his VW buddies, Leon was the victim of a heinous act of violence along with his dear friend, Jamie Benn, who was also a victim of this horrific crime.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Leon was first struck by a truck—suffering serious injuries to his back, fractures from his lumbar spine L1-L5 and Thoracic T3 and T12— seconds later, he was shot on the right side of his chest, pierced across his chest missing his heart, the bullet lodged into his left armpit. His right forearm shattered due to blocking the gunshot, missing a major artery by millimeters, a gunshot that was directed towards his head. Third bullet grazed his left calf. The person who attacked him was someone Leon knew, but they had no personal relationship or interaction. The shooter was targeting someone else— and Leon happened to be standing at the wrong place at the wrong time. Leon had no part in the conflict and happened to be a bystander caught in the violence.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Leon is now in the hospital, undergoing emergency treatment and preparing for multiple surgeries. His recovery will be long, painful, and uncertain.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Leon is more than a victim—he’s a devoted fiancé and a loving father to two children. This tragedy has completely disrupted their lives and placed a heavy emotional and financial burden on his family.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We are asking for $75,000 to help cover:
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Emergency surgeries and hospital care
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Physical rehabilitation and long-term treatment
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Medication, equipment, and mental health support
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Lost income during recovery
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Living expenses for his fiancée and children while Leon is unable to work and recovering from this traumatic event.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Our family is doing everything we can to support Leon and his loved ones, but we can’t do this alone. Any amount you can contribute—no matter how small—will make a meaningful difference in helping Leon heal and support his family through this nightmare.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Please donate if you can, and share this campaign with others. Your support means more to us than words can express.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>With gratitude,
</div>
<div>Erick Zoltzman
