Hello friends,<br />   This March  2016 well-meaning friends and artists will celebrate the14th Annual LADY GOT CHOPS WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH FESTIVAL. The last one was COMPLETELY unfunded.For those who are totally unfamiliar with the story of the festival in brief: in 2003<br />I met the Mom-Daugther team owners of a small and lovley cafe in Brooklyn and over time played their weekly jam session. When March came we decided to create a calendar of events for women's history month. Having played for years in Kit McClures all women Big band I knew plenty of great ones. Thus began the LADY GOT CHOPS Women's Jazz Festival. The cafe closed in 2009.Not knowing if i should continue without a home base i was encouraged by several friends to keep it going-One became the manager of a club  and donated a few bookings and i met artists,librarians club owners/jazz ministers willing to share and particpate.it cost them nothing- the Jazz Foundation donated  for the cost of making bannsers and fliers and thats how its been ever since.<br /><br />I have been doing all the artwork- the coordinating- web-design-promo and contact-Folk did their part -spread the news &amp; booked themselves when I didnt have anything to share. Most of the events were well attended and some magical music happened. There were some problems too which stemmed from a lack of finance and  naivete with regard to mental health of a dear friend and extremely talented person. This festival has been such a test without money- I have been working with venue owners to hire women  at no extra expense to their normal budget as well as some artists who would never settle for what I could offer save for friendship and love..they participated. I want to pay them and rent a large venue and a weekend to have so many of these talented folk perform and be paid properly as well as experience fellowship etc.<br />In the past there was a plea on kickstarter. Lowering the <br />amount I was able to make the quota$1500. Which was used to pay folk.The jazz Foundation graciously offered $300 for hardcopy promotion for 3 years in a row. <div>Our very dear and beloved friend and colleague, Dean Brown, has a very aggressive form of cancer, and needs all the help and support we can give him. The particular type and source of the cancer remains a mystery after more than a month of testing. Dean was forced to check in to the hospital on October 3rd and remains there still while the medical staff tries to figure it out. This particular cancer, or cancers, is unbelievably painful as well as debilitating so Dean is on some pretty heavy sedation. The doctors have begun a sort of general immunotherapy to try to do something while they continue to diagnose it.

<div>It goes without saying that for ANYONE diagnosed with something like this here in America, the financial devastation can and is rapidly does become catastrophic. Dean is unable to work and there are medical co-pays, transportation bills, all the sides of this that Medicare doesn’t cover, quite probably travel and fees to specialists, just to name a few. Life keeps going right along with all the usual expenses on top of all the towering medical bills, but now with no income to pay for them. Any of his musician friends can relate to the way that a diagnosis like this would absolutely up-end our lives.

<div>ANYONE who knows Dean knows the very pure joy of being his friend and colleague. Eric and George have worked with Dean for several decades now and shared countless laughs and hundreds, if not thousands of gigs playing with his musical genius and unbeatable energy onstage. After decades of tours, there is literally an army of his fellow musicians who just love the idea of being on the road with him. As we say, when you hire Dean, you don’t hire him because you want a guitarist on your project. You hire him because you want DEAN on your project. And you want him on there not just for his formidable musicianship but for the hang, for the laughter, the wisdom, the love, the perspectives, and let’s be honest, the little touch of pugnacity.
