<div>On Oct. 5, 2023, she had her first colonoscopy. 
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>As she pushed her way through the mist, the fog and the haze of medical twilight, she opened her eyes to see her doctor, with his white coat, standing next to her hospital bed.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The doctor said a word … which she heard, recognized and registered, but still could not believe.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Cancer.</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Krystn was diagnosed that day with stage 3 colon cancer. She wrote about her journey in a book she titled, <em>Love and Light: How My Cancer Banished Darkness For All Time</em>. One of the chapters, called Dear Ninnie, was about me.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Krystn was invited to book signings. She was asked to be a keynote speaker at events for cancer patients and survivors. She even appeared on the evening news with her surgeon to encourage people to get their colonoscopies. Krystn was determined to pay forward the love and light she’d received from friends and family.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Since then, Krystn has diligently scheduled scans and blood tests every six months. They all came back negative — until her most recent CT scan on Jan. 14, 2026.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>The cancer is back. And it’s back with a vengeance.</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Her cancer has spread or metastasized to her abdomen and to her left lung. Stage 4. Those words were hard for all of us to hear.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>But if there’s anyone who’s been known to beat the odds … and if there’s anyone who can do it again … it’s my sister.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Today, Krystn met with a surgeon for a second opinion at the Moores Cancer Center at UCSD, which is known for specializing in colon cancer.  She also met with a genetic counselor to run tests that will benefit three generations of our family.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>On Thursday, Krystn is heading to City of Hope, where people come from across the nation and around the world to receive the best possibles treatment.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I’m launching this GoFundMe today, as we head into March, which is National Colon Cancer Awareness Month. It will help cover out-of-network and out-of-pocket expenses. I want her to have the best medical care possible from the best doctors out there.

<div>She has a dear friend, Mike, a fellow director and writer who has worked with her at the University of San Diego for many years. When his boys are sad, Mike tells them, “Let it go … and let it rip!”

<div>She adopted the mantra. She’s determined to be strong and brave. She’ll remain filled with optimism and hope. And, with your love and support, it’s my greatest hope that Krystn will continue to live in love and light for many years to come.

 Fighting With Courage: Supporting Krystn and Her Family

<div>In July of 2021, my husband, Adam, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colorectal Cancer, with metastasis to his liver. Adam and I were in shock. A lot of information came at us quickly including the dismal odds of how long he might live.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Adam is stubborn in a wonderful way. He is determined to defy those odds and he has put in the work. He has endured 50+ rounds of chemotherapy, two rounds of heavy targeted radiation, and multiple surgeries. He walks, runs, or does yoga nightly and is an avid hiker. He even walks while hooked up to his take-home chemo pump. His response has blown away all expectations for stage four cancer. In March of this year (2023), the portion of his colon and surrounding lymph nodes were removed where the primary tumor had been located. During the operation, the surgeon uncovered that the primary tumor was no longer there! This was called a “complete response.” No detectable signs of cancer in his colon or lymph nodes.

<div>However, his liver is uncertain. There is one area remaining that doctors are unsure whether it is scar tissue from a dead tumor or if the cancer is still there. This brings me to why we are here. Adam is a candidate for a living donor liver transplant. A new liver will give him the best chance at a cure. Or, if the cancer returns post-transplant, it gives him a better chance at beating it at that time. If we don’t do the transplant, at some point the chemotherapy will stop working and the cancer will spread. We need help finding a living donor to donate part of their liver (a big ask) and we need help with paying for travel, lodging, and medical expenses – which we’ve started this GoFundMe for. The transplant will take place in Rochester, NY. (We live in Southern California.) Our family will need to relocate to Rochester for one to three months for the surgery and recovery.

<div><strong>Liver Donor Criteria</strong>
</div>

</div>
<div>The liver is an organ that regenerates itself. 60-65% of a donor’s liver would be taken. The livers in both the donor and the recipient will begin to regrow until they are fully sized livers again.
</div>

</div>
<div>The donor must:

</div>
<div>•	Have a compatible blood type – Type O
</div>
<div>•	Be physically fit and in good general health
</div>
<div>•	Between the ages of 18 and 60.
</div>
<div>•	Have a healthy body weight – BMI of 30 at the time of donation
</div>
<div>•	Have no significant medical or psychiatric problems
</div>
<div>•	Test negative for active or chronic hepatitis B and C and can have no serious medical
</div>
<div>conditions such as diabetes, cancer or heart disease.
</div>

A New Liver for Adam. A Hope for Longevity.

<div>On November 19, 2022, we unexpectedly lost Leighton to a previously undiagnosed heart condition.  He was in great health and left this world knowing many friends adored &amp; admired him.  
</div>
<div>Leighton leaves behind wife Mary, daughters Mason and Caden, his extended family and many, many friends and colleagues.
</div>

<div>Leighton was one of the kindest, most compassionate people you’d ever hope to meet. He was passionate about graphic design and creating beauty in the world. Leighton adored his family and shared stories about them with everyone he met. 
</div>

</div>
<div>Leighton was deeply involved in the community; he always had a charity ride or another project in the works. While clocking many miles on behalf of JDRF, he coached, motivated and raised thousands of dollars in memory of his wife’s cousin Rose.  He also taught at Chapman University, a great outlet for a person who loved to share his knowledge with others.
</div>

<div>For those folks lucky enough to work with Leighton at Smith &amp; Noble, they got to work with an extremely talented graphic designer who cared so much about his work, the company, and the people he worked with. Leighton always was first to greet a newcomer. He cracked jokes when the stress levels got high at deadline time – and was always happy to explain something or show someone how to do a task.

<div>We will miss him terribly.

<div>Our goal is to raise $25,000 to help Mason and Caden complete their educations and achieve their goals. Nothing would make Leighton happier than to know his beautiful daughters are able to finish college and relieve some of the financial pressures on Mary.
