<div>Up until about a year ago, I enjoyed living an active, busy lifestyle with my mobility assistance service dog, Asher: we were often out discovering all that New York City has to offer, spending time in the busy theater district whenever we could. We were a well-traveled pair, too; traveling near and far together at every opportunity. Asher truly expanded my world and safely took us places that I never imagined I could navigate before he came into my life. His retirement almost two years ago was a harder adjustment for me than for him: he enjoyed his couch potato lifestyle as I learned to use a cane to get around. My stamina and my confidence took a significant hit, and still today, I rarely venture far by myself.

<div>Years before Asher passed away in December 2023, I began the search for his successor, but this journey has been fraught with disappointment and a few false starts. While there are plenty of more durable and readily available mobility aids out there, I have yet to find a piece of equipment that can do for me what a mobility assistance dog does. I use a dog primarily as a counterbalance, to provide some forward momentum, and for light bracing when needed to keep me stable and balanced. We walk in step together, and the dog can make instantaneous adjustments to its own pace and balance in response to my movements to keep me centered. A gentle but forward momentum pull both keeps me from falling backward and allows me to save some energy as the dog helps to propel us both, increasing my stamina so I can keep moving and navigate through crowds.

<div>Now, finally, after two years of waiting for the right match, I’m so excited to be making preparations to welcome my next service dog home from Susquehanna Service Dogs!

<div>My SSD mobility and balance dog has been carefully chosen and trained for me to ensure that she can meet my physical needs confidently in my environment. SSD requires all service dog recipients to attend a three-week training on site at their Grantville, Pennsylvania facility at the recipient’s expense. The fee for placement of each service dog is $5,000. While I have anticipated and prepared for the cost of placement, there are many other expenses associated with a three-week training out of state, and I am asking for help with this financial strain to take the last step in the process of finding a successor dog, beginning on October 14th. I am requesting $6,000 to help cover transportation, lodging, and food for the three-week training session, and the necessary custom mobility harness that my dog will use to assist me. I am also asking for support to offset the unpaid time that I’ll be away from work. Some of these estimated expenses are broken down more fully below. Any additional funds raised will be put toward the $5,000 fee for placement of the dog.

<p>Dexter Kennedy is a recent graduate of Jonathan Dayton High School in Springfield, NJ.  He's a member of the National Honor Society and was accepted to Lafayette College where he intends to study psychology, to become a therapist. He played on the tennis and soccer teams in high school, and has passions for music and theater. <br /><br /> <br /><br />Dexter sustained a very serious neck injury while swimming in the surf on the Jersey shore on July 4th.  He was air-lifted to a trauma center in Atlantic City, where he underwent emergency surgery.  After spending several days in the ICU, he was transferred to Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange, where he's currently recovering.<br /><br /> <br /><br />At this time, Dexter has no feeling or mobility in his hands or from the chest down.  While it is too early to tell where this could eventually go, Dexter's spirits are positive and he is determined to do anything and everything within his power to recover. He remains a great inspiration to all who know and love him.<br /><br /><br />We are all diligently praying that he will make a full recovery, but he has an extraordinarily challenging road ahead.   <br /><br /><br /><br />We are creating this fund to support Dexter and his truly wonderful family with upcoming medical, therapeutic and home-modification expenses.<br /><br /> <br /><br />A donation of any amount is sincerely appreciated, as are your continued support and prayers.    <br /><br /> <br /><br />Sincerest thanks for your support for Dexter and his family.

On November 17, these 2 beautiful children were <a href="http://www.wthr.com/article/authorities-investigate-double-homicide-in-montgomery-county" target="_blank">murdered by their mother</a> . This tragedy took the lives of Jason Worley's two precious children, Tyler, aged 7, and Charlee, aged 3.  We are all heartbroken and devastated by this recent event, and ask for your thoughts and prayers, not only for Jason and his family, but for all of those who were touched by this tragedy including classmates, friends, co-workers, neighbors, and countless others.<br /><br />Many have inquired about how they can help, so we are setting up this page for those who would like to contribute to funds needed to help cover funeral and other expenses so Jason can focus on dealing with his grief and not have to worry about finances in this difficult time.<br /><br />If you cannot contribute financially but would still like to help, please share this story so we can reach as many people as possible.<br /><br />This page was created and maintained by the employer of Jason Worley, with the permission of his family.

Jason Barnes, my stepson, was caught up in the tragedy of the Ellicott City, MD floods on 30 July 2016. As he was getting ready to close up his store, All Time Toys, for the night he noticed some water in the basement where all of his inventory was stored. He thought nothing of it, as the basement has gotten minor flooding in past rain events, but as he was moving his inventory off the floor he noticed water flooding in around the door that accesses the exterior of the building. Just as he reached the stairs heading for the main floor, the door gave way to feet of water gushing into the basement. <br /><br /> On reaching street level, he was confronted with a raging torrent of water surging down Main St. After a few minutes, Jason, along with a few other store owners who were huddled in the alleyway leading to their storefronts, noticed a car being swept down the street with a woman trapped inside. Even in the midst of knowing he'd likely just lost all of his inventory, Jason realized what was important and deftly tried to reach the woman as the car came to a stop in front of his store. However, he was swept off his feet by the rush of water flooding the town. <br /><br /> Undeterred, Jason made it to his feet, and this time, with the aid of the other brave men in the doorway, made a human chain to save the woman. However, after coming up short of their goal of being able to reach the car, Jason once again risked his own life to help the woman. He let go of the chain and lifted the woman off the car so she could reach the gentleman nearest to Jason. Thankfully, he was able to stay on his feet, and both he and the woman were pulled to safety. <br /><br /> Thankfully, Jason has insurance on his store, but we have no idea how long it will take to settle his claim, and we all full well know insurance never covers everything that was lost. Jason's car was also swept into a sink hole. I'm pretty certain he only had liability insurance on the vehicle and it will be likely a complete loss and he'll receive no reimbursement for it. <br /><br /> To make matters worse, Jason just recently realized his lifelong dream when he was able to purchase this store just two short months ago. This was his family of five's sole means of support. Jason and his wife, Christine, have three children; Chance(16), Evelynn(4.5), and Nathanial(1.5). If you could find it in your hearts to spare anything you think you can afford, we would be forever grateful. If not, we certainly understand, but ask at a minimum you share his story with as many friends and family as you can. Thank you so much for your time.
