Better known around the universe as Sun Ra.

A revolutionary musical explorer who proudly erased the lines between deep-rooted traditionalism and more radical sonic experimentation-- and often in the breadth of the same song-- his futuristic attitude towards art, sound and philosophy have proven to be profoundly influential on 20th and 21st century artists from across the creative spectrum.

<div>Yet despite his worldwide acclaim, and several generations of local enthusiasts keeping his spirit alive here in his hometown over the years, Ra has never been given an official celebration in honor of his myriad contributions to the world of music by the city itself, which we are hoping to change this year by creating— with the help of the Magic City— an official Sun Ra Day here in Birmingham on his intergalactic "arrival day" of May 22nd.

<div>To help rally people to the cause, and honor the occasion of his 111th birthday, I am hoping to— with your help— raise enough money to bring the Arkestra back to Birmingham for a four day cultural event from May 21st-24th, that will feature movies, art shows, food, roundtable discussions, and educational events, as well as two performances by the band at two of the city’s most venerated musical institutions, in the form of The Nick (home of one of Sun Ra and the Arkestra’s most legendary local shows in 1988) and the Carver Theater.

<div>To that end, I’ve partnered with several arts, music and film organizations— all of whom have contributed in their own way to honoring Sun Ra’s legacy over the years— to help pull the celebration off and host unique events around the city, including the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, Sidewalk Cinema, Saturn, Seasick Records, Southern Music Research Center and East Village Arts.

<div>Doubling as a fundraiser for those same institutions, many of whom have struggled financially since Covid, and are facing even more economic stress given our current cultural climate, I wanted to figure out a way to give back to all of them in some way while simultaneously hosting the ultimate birthday bash for Ra here in the Magic City.

<div>Having spent the past few months getting everyone on board, including the Arkestra themselves, all of whom are incredibly excited about the prospect of making it happen, I am going to try everything in my power to pull it off and make it a reality for our great city.

<div>That being said, it’s not cheap to bring a thirteen piece band anywhere for a one-off show, especially one as legendary as the Arkestra.

<div>Which is where you come in.

<div>Even though it’s relatively short notice, I am hoping to raise enough money to not only pay for the Arkestra to come and play here for two distinct concerts, but also stay in the city as honorary guests for four days as we celebrate their inimitable bandleader, and them as well, so that they can participate in all of the events and not feel rushed getting home.

<div>With that aim in mind, I am hoping to raise $31,000 to pay for all of their expenses, as well as the expenses of the events themselves, so that all proceeds from each occasion can go straight into the pockets of the venues that host them, with the main Sun Ra Day celebration at the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame on May 22nd going to help fund their Saturday Jazz Greats education program for Birmingham’s youth. That price tag will also include all band fees, flights, hotel rooms, backline, food, transportation and incidentals we might encounter along the way.

<div>It seems like a tall order, and a crazy thing to try and pull off on such a tight schedule, but I know in my heart we can do it if we all put our minds to it.

<div>And although I wish there were a tier component to honor individual small donations in some way, given the limited schedule to get this done, and the fact that the events themselves are in-kind contributions to each participating venue for their ongoing financial well-being, we will not be offering a rewards system. Instead, we hope that civic-minded members of our community, both here and around the country— alongside Sun Ra fans from around the world— will see this as an opportunity to do something great to honor the memory and impact of Ra and carry his music and message forward well into the future, both here in Birmingham, as well as around the globe.

<div>Marvin and Casie have searched into getting additional treatments to go alongside his radiation treatments, on top of his daily medications and supplements, for as long as it takes to eradicate this cancer. It's high Vitamin C infusions. Unfortunately, they are $250 each and he'll need those at least 3 times a week for a month or two. The daily medications and supplements are about $1000 a month. At this point, this alone has made them be financially strapped and tapped out.

<div>We are reaching out during a profoundly challenging time for the Walker family. On April 12th, 2024, they received the heartbreaking news that Marvin, a beloved husband to Casie Reed-Walker, a devoted father of 4 to, Delaney(15), Pierce(12), Merrick(3) and Stellan(8 months), and dearest friend, has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Prostate Cancer with a Gleason score of 9, which is very aggressive. It has spread to his lymph nodes and up to his throat. Local doctors gave him a life expectancy of 4-5 years. But they said, no, we are going to fight! The chemo and hormone medicine worked well the first half, but they weren’t as happy with it the second half. So, they have now moved on to Pluvicto, a liquid radiation that goes straight to the cancer cells. He will begin treatment November 5th at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. As you can imagine, this has been a devastating blow, not only emotionally but also financially.

<div>Marvin and his family have always been the first to lend a hand to others, and now it’s our turn to help them. The costs of treatment, medical bills, and everyday expenses are quickly piling up, creating an overwhelming burden during an already difficult time. Good news, it hasn’t metastasized. Not as good, but bearable news, the best route for pain management and quality of however long the rest of his life may be, involves amputation. Ugly news, surgery and pain management costs are not funny. You’d think they’d pay US for obtaining such a precious piece of this priceless beast! I mean, I haven’t asked. Yet.

Today, November 13, 2023 this sweet little boy appeared on the front porch of our Costume Departments house. Luckily, he showed up at a house that is full of animal lovers. That said, he’s extremely malnourished and has a broken leg that the vet feels is from a gun shot wound. To give this sweet angel a fighting chance, he needs our help. Our dude is at the vet tonight where he’ll undergo an X-ray to determine whether or not he’ll have to have his right front leg amputated or if it’s salvageable enough to have a plate put in. Unfortunately, either option is costly. <br />We have an initial </font><span style="color:rgb(51,51,51);">quote</span><font color="#333333"> of 2k on the low end and 5k on the high end. We will know more tomorrow but wanted to ask for community help with helping us save this sweet angel. </font>

<div>Hey there, you may have heard about Trieste's health issues of late. If not here's the story. Around Mother's Day Trieste started to feel a bit winded, walking up a few stairs felt like a feat. The next day she really knew something was really wrong. She went into urgent care and after disusing everything with her Doctor she got a cat scan. Turned out she had blood clots in each of her lungs, not good. She was given a prescription for blood thinners and sent home.

<div>We were hoping the blood thinners would help but two days later her heart decided it had had enough of not getting oxygen so it went ballistic. Her heart rate reached 245 BPM, which is normal for a cheetah, but not for a human person. She was rushed to the Emergency room where she was given a chemical diffribulator that re-started her heart, yes, you read that correctly like it flatlined for a second before slipping back into a normal pattern.

<div>She didn't die but from here things got rough, like really really rough. She was admitted to the hospital but by now the clots had become extremely painful and she had to sleep sitting up to help with the pain. She was placed on oxygen. Turns out a portion of her lungs didn't make it out of the ordeal.

<div>While it has been over a month, Trieste is still having lots of issues from all of this. She can't sleep comfortably laying flat.
</div>

<div>Our friends and family have been amazing. People ask every day, what can we do for you guys? How can we help? Trieste needs an adjustable hospital-type bed. And though it’s not easy to do, we’re hoping we can ask for help to raise some money and buy her what she needs. In the middle of all of this, she also damaged a tooth and needs some dental care. A portion of this money will go to her tooth as well.

Roger Sherer is a light in our lives.  Whether it’s on set or personally, Roger will make you feel special.  As an Integral part of the Film Community he is one of “Us”, and he is family.  As a group we need to love and support family…through good times and bad.  Roger is going through a life changing event and he desperately needs our help.  While on set on Wednesday, doing what he loves, Roger went into cardiac arrest.  Thanks to the valiant efforts of another friend and crew member, Stan Fyfe, who immediately performed CPR until the paramedics arrived, Roger is still with us. They have determined that once he is more stable he will need a combo pacemaker/defibrillator installed.   There are so many unknowns at this point but one thing we do know is that this will be a very long and painful recovery process for him with many restrictions including driving and working.  There are just so many questions unanswered and only time will tell what the challenges are that he will face… physically, mentally and financially.  So beyond the love and prayers will are all delivering, please consider donating to this page to help ease the financial burdens that are sure to come.  He loves you all…we love him…let’s show him!  PLEASE Donate whatever you can to our friend.  Every little bit helps.
