<div>The Jamaica Wellness and Relief Initiative is designed to deliver high-impact, measurable, and immediate outcomes for families devastated by Hurricane Melissa. My name is Anna Jeffries, and my work spans Indigenous cultural leadership, wellness infrastructure, and community development across Jamaica and the United States. I have deep generational roots throughout the island, with loved ones directly impacted in Westmoreland, St. James, and St. Ann.

Her surgery is already scheduled Feb 26th and we just learned that her surgery is not going to be covered by insurance which means she will need to pay several fees completely out of pocket. As we all know it can be hard to ask for help, but we all deserve to feel well in our bodies.

<div>Hi loves. My name is Tangina Stone. I am a black, queer, grandaughter, friend, sister, daughter, artist, auntie, writer, performer, friend, and human who is currently navigating a serious health emergency.
</div>

</div>
<div>I have been suffering with chronic pain and illness since I was a child and up until very recently, no doctor has believed my symptoms enough to investigate further. Two weeks ago which marked about 16 years since my appendix ruptured in an ER after being confused for cramps because my periods were horrific, I was diagnosed with Endometriosis. I have suffered with two ruptured endometriomas in the last year. I have had countless cysts and debilitating periods as long as I have had one. I have a strong family history of endometrial, breast, and ovarian cancer and this surgery will also be an opportunity to take biopsies and assess my needs around genetic counseling in one sweep. I have been told that I IBS for all of these years, and it has actually been Endo all along.

<div><strong>It feels important to note during black history month that ONLY 5% of people diagnosed with Endo are black</strong>. Not because we do not have Endo, but because we are very often not believed, or are not given access to tests, resources or the care that we need to get a diagnosis. It has taken such a long time to get this diagnosis and to find doctors who could develop a care plan for me that makes the future feel hopeful.

<div>I have been advocating for my health and seeing GI specialists, multiple OBGYN's and exhausting my resources as long as I have been an adult- to get answers but to no avail until recently.
</div>

<div>I wake up each day at a level six in pain and throughout the day reach a 10-12. My physical health and chronic pain is severely impacting my mental health and making it increasingly hard to be present for my own life.
</div>

</div>
<div>Your support will help me to afford this life changing surgery so that I can finally live without this chronic pain and to be safe as my doctor has expressed that some of my symptoms can be life threatening if left untreated for much longer. Your help will also help me take the time that I need to rest and recover post surgery.

Tangina Needs Emergency Surgery, Please Help!

<div>For those that don't know my sister Anna was involved in a serious car accident on the evening of May 23rd in downtown Brooklyn as she was driving home from dance class. The accident was caused by undercover law enforcement responding to an urgent emergency.

<div>Anna has suffered a few severe injuries for which she will need extensive rehabilitation and recovery time. Currently it sounds like, at the very least, the entire summer will be spent in stages of recovery.

<div>Anna has been in Brooklyn, NY helping out our family and handling the affairs of our great-aunt who is living with dementia. 
</div>

<div>She was planning to return home to be with our family in NC following the closing of our great-aunt’s apartment on May 31st. These plans have now changed and Anna has to remain in the state of NY to receive medical care and rehabilitation for her injuries.
</div>

<div>We are seeking professional guidance and support along her journey to recovery, and ensuring that she has all that she needs. While NY is a no-fault state that will cover Anna’s time away from work and school, she needs immediate funds to support herself now as she is unable to work with these injuries.

<div>On 5/9, I started my day off as I usually do. I took my puppy for our 45 minute walk, we did some behavioral training, and then I made some tea to begin mentally preparing for my work day. I logged on to see that the head of HR put a meeting on my calendar titled "Catch Up" since we had a good relationship I didn't think anything of it. I thought "Oh cool I get to talk to her, we tend to have good conversations". A few minutes pass and I go to the lounge to see someone who has been at the company for 4+ years saying that he has been laid off effective today and had no prior awareness. This "Catch Up" call starts to produce anxiety. Am I next?!? Heart racing, stomach is in shambles. I can't eat, I can't concentrate. A few minutes later my director's account is deactivated and my heart sinks. She got laid off too. At this moment, the reality of the situation starts to settle in. I get into the meeting with the head of HR to learn that I am also being laid off and its effective immediately due to an organizational restructuring. I leave the meeting an emotional mess. Financial security is gone and I later learn I only get ONE paycheck as severance pay. Lol. This situation reminded me that I am nothing more than a number to these companies and that the world is evil. Companies prioritize throwing lavish, over budget yacht parties versus securing roles for their employees. Companies also create restructuring plans, but choose not to communicate these plans to the individuals impacted, even though we tout "Trust through Transparency" as our motto. The dissonance is alarming. As I sit here a few days later in reflection, I feel angry, disgusted, sad, relieved, and peaceful. Angry and disgusted at the way leadership chose to navigate this life-impacting situation for me and everyone involved. Locking my laptop within 30 minutes of my HR call, so I couldn't even say good bye to my colleagues. Also, the facetiousness of titling a termination call as a "Catch up" call?!? Come on. Be forreal. Sad for my situation and all of my AMAZING colleagues that were also impacted, NONE of us deserved to be treated that way. Relieved to have been removed from the toxic work environment and culture where people were treated as numbers, which we can clearly see from how this lay-off process was handled. And at peace knowing that whatever is next in store for me, will be centering my happiness. I created this gofundme to support with rent and bills for the next few months. Due to the severance being one check and unemployment being $350 a week, I'm concerned about not being able to sustain as I'm looking for my next role.
