<div>Hi, I'm Anna Wardley, and I'm swimming 3 x 5km in three different pools across England between 28-30 March 2025 to raise funds for Liverpool-based <a href="https://alfiessquad.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alfie's Squad</a> who run peer support groups for children bereaved by suicide.

<div>As founder and CEO of <a href="https://www.teamluna.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Luna Foundation</a>, we have been working for three years to improve the support for children and young people who experience the death of a parent through suicide. 
</div>

<div>As our journey at Luna draws to a close on 31 March, I want to pass the baton by raising funds for another organisation that has the needs of suicide bereaved children at its heart. I've always found solace in the water through challenging times and this is no exception, as a project I've poured my heart in draws to a close.
</div>

<div>Doing international research as a Churchill Fellow, I saw first hand the power of peer support for children after suicide. Having lost my own father to suicide aged 9, I just wish the support Alfie's Squad offers today had been available to me four decades ago to counter the isolation, shame and low self-esteem I experienced after my dad ended his own life.
</div>

<div>Alfie's Squad creates a safe and nurturing environment where children can freely express themselves and connect with others who have experienced suicide bereavement. They have a vision to make this type of support available across the country and I'm swimming to shine a light on the wonderful work they do. 
</div>

3 x 5km for Alfie's Squad

<div>On Saturday, September 14th, Lightbody Health CIC will be taking part in their annual ‘Carry the Weight’ walk from Southport to Otterspool Prom in Liverpool. 
</div>
<div>This year, they have decided to team up with Alfie’s Squad CIC by launching ‘Carry the Weight for Alfie’s Squad, 2024’.
</div>
<div>Alfie’s Squad supports children, and their families, who have been bereaved by suicide. They have a peer support group for children bereaved by suicide in Liverpool which supports children from all over Merseyside and beyond. This group is the first of its kind in the UK.
</div>
<div>Some of the participants will be carrying 35lbs of weight, whilst others will be sharing the load between them.
</div>
<div>Each of these 35lbs represents a bereaved family who are currently being supported by Alfie’s Squad. This weight not only symbolises people that they have lost, but also the heavy burden that these families carry trying to cope with their grief.
</div>
<div>Alfie’s Squad currently supports more than 40 children in or person, as well as children online from across the country. All these children have lost a loved one to suicide.
</div>
<div>Everything within Alfie’s Squad has been set up by now 15-year-old Alfie. He tragically lost his dad in 2017 when he was just eight years old. Alfie struggled with feelings of guilt and isolation. He wanted to meet other children in his situation, but there was nothing in the whole of the UK, so Alfie decided to step up and sort it out himself.

<div>Our Carry the Weight walkers will be joined by the families being supported by Alfie’s Squad for the final part of the walk, which will be a poignant tribute to the people they have lost.

<div>Alfie's Squad is a support group for children who have been bereaved by suicide in and around Merseyside.
</div>
<div>The aim of Alfie's Squad is to reduce isolation and improve self-worth of children who have gone through such a devastating event in their young lives.
</div>
<div>13 of our amazingly brave children who attend the group are going swimming with sharks to help raise money to continue Alfie's aim of helping as many bereaved children as he can!
</div>
<div>The shark dive will take place on Sunday, 21st April.
</div>
<div>The children taking part range from 8 - 17 years old.
</div>

<div>We are abseiling down the main stand at Anfield Football Club on Sunday, 14th May for Alfie's Squad!

<div>Alfie's Squad is a non profit organisation which supports children bereaved by suicide in and around Merseyside.

</div>

<div>It was set up by then 9 year old Alfie, who lost his dad in 2017 at the age of 8.

</div>
<div>Now at the grand old age of 14, Alfie has worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the. Lack of specific support for children bereaved by suicide.
</div>
<div>As a result of his hard work, the very first support group is launching at the beginning of June.
</div>
<div>This will be a safe place where bereaved children can make new friends and feel less isolated, while having a lot of fun.
</div>

Anfield Abseil for Alfie's Squad

I never imagined I'd be having to do this (and I'm still not comfortable with doing this), but close friends have persuaded me that I really need a custom-built wheelchair to suit my requirements.<br /><br />After years of using wheelchairs that are not fit for purpose,  needing continual repair works, and have often caused me to be in a lot of pain (on occasions involving hospital stays and broken bones). This has made it difficult to maintain a level of independence and comfort, so I need to look into a custom-built wheelchair that will help me to get about pain-free.<br /><br />This will be a chair designed from scratch, especially for me, rather than a standard chair that has been modified to try and be as suitable as it can be.  <br /><br />As those who know me are aware, going to watch football, as well travelling with work, form a massive part of my life.  A lightweight wheelchair with power-assisted wheels will help enable me to continue to do these things without being in discomfort and pain.<br /><br />It isn't possible to get a custom made wheelchair via the NHS. I would be eligible for a small amount of funding from the NHS, but with the time it would take to receive this and then the time spent building the chair, it would be at least seven months before I could feel comfortable and confident in a suitable, custom-built wheelchair. I really don’t know if I can wait that long.<br /><br />I am looking to raise approximately £10,000, which would cover the cost of the wheelchair which will cost around £4,250 (possibly more depending on the number of adaptions needed) and the power assisted wheels, which are approximately £5,500<br /><br />Any additional funding that I am fortunate enough to raise will be donated to the Brittle Bone Society, the national charity for people with Osteogenesis Imperfecta - <a href="https://brittlebone.org/"><a href="https://brittlebone.org/" target="_blank" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://brittlebone.org/</a></a>.  For those of you who do not know, Osteogenesis Imperfecta is the genetic condition that I have.<br /><br />Thank you in advance for any donations that you can make – I appreciate it much more than you could ever imagine.<br /><br />Amy
