My name is Adrian Octavius Walker, an artist and community builder from St. Louis, now living in Chicago. Family, connection, and care are at the heart of everything I do, which is why I’m reaching out on behalf of my dear friends Dan and Mary Velasquez and their beautiful family, Elena (3 months), Luca (1½), and Axel (3), who recently experienced a devastating loss.

Their brand-new home was tragically destroyed in an uncontrollable fire. The silver lining is that the entire family is safe and unharmed, and for that, we are endlessly grateful. Still, the loss of their home, a space filled with their dreams, love, and hard work, has been heartbreaking.

Anyone who knows Dan knows the kind of light he brings into people’s lives. Through his work in health and wellness, he’s helped countless individuals transform their lives, motivating, teaching, and inspiring others to take care of their bodies and minds. His dedication to bettering his community and uplifting others makes this loss all the more painful to witness, but it also reminds us how much he’s given, and how much we can give back in return.

I’m calling on our community, friends, and extended family to rally together and help Dan and Mary rebuild their legacy home. Any amount, no matter how small, will go a long way in helping them find stability and hope during this difficult time.

Your kindness, prayers, and generosity mean the world to them. Thank you for showing up with love and community. Together, we can help restore warmth and comfort to this incredible family’s life.

With deep gratitude,

It is with deep sorrow and broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved brother, Filly, who departed this life unexpectedly on July 3, 2025 at his home Thailand where he lived for work. He was 41 years old.

Filly was known for being hardworking, his adventurous spirit, generous heart, and unwavering kindness. He touched the lives of many through his vibrant personality, deep compassion, and love for culture and travel. Though far from home in Asia the last couple years, he remained close to the hearts of those who loved him.

Our family is currently navigating the difficult process of bringing him back home from his home in Thailand to Oakland so we can lay him to rest with the dignity and love he deserves. We are reaching out to our community, friends, and extended family for support during this challenging time.

Any contribution, no matter the size, would mean the world to us. Donations will go directly toward the costs of transportation from Asia, funeral arrangements, and honoring his memory.

Filly will forever be missed and lovingly remembered.

Bringing Filmon Home for a Loving Farewell

On November 4th, 2024, our brother and sister-in-law, Matthew and Courtney, welcomed their firstborn daughter, Etta Mae Phillips-Manning. She was a perfectly healthy, vibrant, wide-eyed baby and her parent's greatest gift.

In the final weekend of 2024, Etta fell suddenly and mysteriously ill. Despite seeking immediate medical attention through multiple ER visits, midwives, a pediatrician, and loved ones, her symptoms remained misleadingly mild until a sudden cardiac arrest led to her hospitalization. Doctors worked tirelessly to find answers, but no clear cause emerged—only the devastating reality of how swiftly and unexplainably she declined.

Brain imaging revealed irreversible damage from the cardiac arrest, leaving no hope for a meaningful quality of life. Etta entered hospice care, and Courtney and Matthew faced the unimaginable—saying goodbye to their daughter. For over 40 days in the hospital, including four weeks in hospice, they stayed by her side, filling her final moments with love—holding her in the sun, reading to her, and surrounding her with warmth, music, and the embrace of family. On February 11th, 2025, Etta took her final breath.

Somewhere deep down, we trust that we will get through this. We know that this will not be the end of our joy, our family, or our fervor for life, though it feels that way right now. And we thank you in advance for your patience, grace, and love as we navigate this loss, now and for the rest of our lives…we love you, Etta Mae. Every tomorrow is for you."

Our Mom has been the example of drive, strength and resilience in our family—we watched her achieve her lifelong dream of becoming a Registered Nurse without fail. Quietly, our family dealt with the news that her cancer had returned at the start of the Holidays. Grateful for an early detection we were able to administer treatment quickly and, as of last week, she is no longer in the hospital; we’re all glad to have her home. Our family is asking for your support in her continued rest and recovery as we shoulder the weight of medical and monthly expenses in the coming months.

So What's Black Magic?

Black Magic is a collection of tintype portraits made around historically Black cities throughout America that will contribute to the largest contemporary archive of Black American life through wet plate collodion (or tintype) photography. What once was an exercise in curiosity and discipline blossomed into a prodigious exploration of Blackness, Queerness, Afrofuturism, and the Art of Magic/Spirituality. When one gazes upon a tintype the viewer often doesn’t catch that the image isn’t sitting on a surface but rather appears to be floating in space. These images exist in a liminal space that offers an allegory for race in America. The development of this archive of images that bridges the gap between ancestral imagery and capturing the future of our people is something I’ve pondered on for some time. Over the last 12 months I’ve made over 100 tintype portraits as preparation and proof of concept while holding a full time job directing the youth photography program at Venice Arts. I have also had the pleasure of teaching photography at the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Skirball Cultural Center, Youth Policy Institute, and Camino Nuevo Charter Academy! I am excited to dedicate myself to this project full time to see this through. With my background in education, the sharing of how this work, specifically making tintypes, is done means the world to me. Part of my practice is to show the sitters in my portraits the technique in the darkroom.

What's a Tintype?

A tintype, also known as a melainotype or ferrotype, is a photograph made by creating a direct positive on a thin sheet of metal coated with a dark lacquer or enamel and used as the support for the photographic emulsion created in the 1850s. Historically speaking, tintypes were reserved for wealthy white citizens with access to natural resources in the form of metal and chemicals. In regards to Black tintypes, the images made of enslaved Africans were used within white scientific communities to create arguments proving that Black people were scientifically inferior. These arguments have sustained their legitimacy over centuries, with the images still in pristine condition. This project serves as an act of renewal for all of the images created to diminish the Black experience as a whole. If well preserved, these images can last forever. Over the course of this project, the goal is to create a body of work showing the spectrum of Black expressivity as artifacts.

What was once just an exercise in curiosity and discipline blossomed into this extraordinary celebration of all the people and places I hold dear.

Hello everyone!

Simply put my mother and I are in need of some financial help.

In the summer of 2018, I found out my mother was diagnosed with Stage 1 Endometrial Cancer. Nervous but optimistic, by the time she received her last hysterectomy (September of 2019), she had already entered into stage 3.
Without work for the past couple years, her concerns on how to pay for treatment , taunted her. As she expressed to me her worries, I knew asking for help was the best and only way I could show support.

With your help ,we'll be raising $50k to cover her medical expenses.

I told her, despite the number, or how big the number, what I do have are friends and community that has shown me what true love and support is and maybe with that help, together well be able to help her lighten this financial burden.

On my family's behalf , I'd like to thank you all for taking the time to read, share or support in whichever way you can!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

~ARRINGTON WEST

Breana Janae Parks, a Bay Area photographer, photographs local youth as well as her students to portray the two sides of Black childhood. The first images of the series are the stereotypes often put on the shoulders of Black youth. Juxtaposed is the second image which portrays the genuine euphoria of youth. Currently, she is fundraising to print her double exposure photographs onto silk scarves that she calls the “veil” as well as create a video installation for social media while museums are at limited capacity. Her overall goals are to (1) Host an installation in a gallery for the general public to see the scarves, (2) gift a local outreach center with a set of photo prints, and (3) give her participants as well as parents prints. If you are interested in learning more about this project please go visit Represent collaborative to see an exclusive story on its development.

The funds will allow her to pay her students, printing materials, and installation equipment.

The final images will be printed on silks, and displayed on her website as well as her instagram .https://representcollaborative.com/illusions-of-innocence

People of the community and metro east area will be able to come learn the wonders of natural and chemical dyes specifically indigo dying. The Indigo Garden will also serve as a community garden bringing fresh and natural produce to the community as well as allowing the community to come and learn about the benefits of growing their own food and harvest.

Who I Am

My name is Eugenia Alexander and I am a professional multi-medium artist and have been practicing for over 12 years living and working in the metro east area of IL/MO. I have been practicing textiles for 5 years working specifically with indigo dye. I have worked and shown with numerous institutions and publications such as Saint Louis Art Museum, Regional Arts Commission, Alive Magazine, NPR STL and many others. On the green side I have been taking care of green friends for over 10 years with this year being my first growing produce which has been a success.

The Importance of this Project

This project is personal for me because I will be servicing a community that has helped shape me as an artist and educator as well as my family ties to this community. Growing up, as a family we would spend vacation time driving down to my grandparents and great grandmothers in east saint louis IL. My grandfather being a collector of African artifacts and my grandmother being an artist we were surrounded by art not even being conscious of the culture we were in-taking as kids, we were simply just at grandma's house. At the age of 12 I started to accompany my grandmother on her workshops and classes as her assistant and taught my first class at Sister Thea Bowman Catholic school there in east saint louis, officially becoming an arts educator. It was at my great grandmothers ( Grandma Honey) where I saw my first garden. Both my art journey and green journey started in East Saint Louis. My family ties are with this city. My mother is from East Saint Louis. My Grandmother was born and raised there and still lives there. My Grandfather was born and raised there and is still living in the city of East Saint Louis. My great grandmother was raised there and lived there until she transcended. My Great Great Grandmother Eugenia moved from Mississippi and set roots in the city of East Saint Louis. If you are unfamiliar with the city of East Saint Louis IL, at one point in history the city was a thriving point for railroad work and factories. The city was also predominantly white with black residents who were making a living and name for themselves with owning their own businesses. When the race riot broke out black people were killed, businesses and homes burned to the ground forcing people to flee the city, and leaving at least 6,000 homeless and $400,000 in property damages which today translate to over $7 million. Although this was only 100 years ago the city is still recovering from this horrific incident happening. With all of this being said it's only right that I use my knowledge and talents to be a vessel and of service for the community that has shaped and taught me and bring them something beautiful and resourceful.

Start Up Funding

I already have a plot of land in mind that is perfect for The Indigo Garden its just a matter of getting the money to secure/buy. The property has a lot size of about 4,000SQ ft so lots and lots of space for gardening and creating. The property also has a workshop space that served as a church and donut shop which is perfect space for teaching and creating. I have spoken with the owner as well as seen the space in person. Below is a breakdown of what I will be using the $40,000 for.

Property - $24,000

Warehouse fixes - $10,000

Garden Supplies (includes greenhouse for germinating seeds and starting plants for the season as well as other tools and etc.) - $4,000

Dye equipment and supplies - $2,000

- Getting the funds to secure the property as soon as possible is my main focus because i really feel that this space is the perfect space and i really don't want to miss out or loose it! Friends and family, it is with a heavy heart and yet one filled with hope that we reach out to you.

Our dear son, brother, friend, and all-around larger than life guy with a big smile and even bigger heart, Lawrence “Low” Walker, is fighting for his life in the ICU and needs us now more than ever.

Low suffered a horrific motor vehicle accident on July 5th, 2020, enduring severe physical Trauma and leaving him in a critical day-to-day state. The doctors have placed Low under sedation as he recovers from brain surgery and has intubated him to help with his breathing. By reducing the burden on the body, they are giving his brain an opportunity to heal.

We ask you to join us in circling our arms around Low and his family as a community.100% of funds raised will go to Low and his family to support the ongoing costs and expenses related to his long road to recovery and physical and cognitive rehabilitation. It’s unclear how long that it will take for Low to recover but he’s expected to be in the hospital a minimum of 4-7 months.

Low is a brother who would give you the shirt off his back, always ready to give and support family and friends - always ready with a joke or a smile to put a smile on your face and lift you up. This is our time to lift him up in prayer, with warm thoughts, and financial support as we journey right alongside him.

Low’s Family, Friends, and his Brothers of Omega Psi Phi thank you all, from former football brothers to former coaches, classmates, former work colleagues and everyone that Low has crossed paths with that has shown an outpouring of support and encouragement and comfort.

We THANK YOU!

#4Low #TeamLow #WeAreWithLow #RoadToRecovery #LowsSupportSystem #Team #LowsCommunity #FIETTS

Lil Black Boy Campaign: $1k for Free Therapy

UPDATED AS OF 10/1/2020: https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/napafire

Similar to the 2017 Fires many of us feel helpless and you are not alone, it is a normal feeling. I write this note with fresh fires raging just about a mile away from our property in both directions in the AVAs of Oakville and St. Helena. The fires of 2017 were demoralizing and destructive in the form of lost lives and structures. The fires of 2020 raged for 30 days throughout August and September, only to be teased with a short break where the smoke cleared and the sunshine and beauty broke through, and then the unimaginable destruction started again.

These back to back fires have been death blows to much of our community, especially farmers and laborers who will miss most or all of harvest this year, and our hospitality workers who were just starting to regain their balance after being knocked down hard by the pandemic.

In 2017 all of you made it possible for us to ship many truck loads of basic needs items that had been donated to shelters throughout the areas hit by wild fires a National non-profit partner - Good360. We donated to volunteer fire departments that don't receive federal funding, and we collected over 300 different types of acorns to preserve all species of oak trees in Sonoma and Napa, many of which are just starting to go back into the ground in front of the homes people have rebuilt.

Just as we did in 2017 we will make sure 100% of the proceeds raised by this campaign get to the people who need it the most, with a special focus on farm workers and hospitality workers who's lives have been turned upside down.

Here's what we know currently:

— 56,781 acres burned
— 5% containment
— 26,623 structures threatened
— 107 Napa Co homes destroyed
— 36 Sonoma Co homes destroyed
— Cause under investigation

Glass Fire Footage

To our neighbors and friends in wine, hospitality and beyond, all I can offer is stay strong , stay connected, and lean on one another. This may be Mother Earth’s greatest test of the century for Napa... in a year that already brought a once in a century pandemic. Instincts tell me we are still a long way from getting to the other side of this one. Now, more than ever, we must summon all of the mental strength we have. Mental toughness is the ability to make the next best decision, no matter the circumstances. Time heals everything. The skies, soil and vines are resilient and will regenerate; we must do the same. Thank you to the people on the front lines trying to control the uncontrollable. Words don’t suffice to express our gratitude, but thank you anyway. Our entire ONEHOPE and Napa Family will never forget the helpers and heroes who stepped forward into the danger. Thank you to any of you who have donated or simply said a prayer for our community.

2017 Original Story:

Napa, Sonoma and a number of the surrounding counties lit up last night (10/9). This morning the skies are orange and many of the fires are still out of control. This campaign is to fund recovery for people whose lives have been flipped upside down. Currently over 8,400 structures have been burned down and 42 deaths to date...

All of the funds raised will be spread out accross a number of worthy organizations and their relative efforts to save lives and help people to recover and rebuild:

Sonoma Valley Fire and Rescue Authority (http://svfra.org/)

Napa County Fire Department (http://www.countyofnapa.org/CountyFire)

Lake County Fire and Rescue (http://lakecountyfire.com)

As well as other relief efforts in partnership with shelters and relief organizations for the people impacted by the fire. A detailed and evolving outline of how these funds will be distributed is provided here: https://docsend.com/view/fwrer39

The Direct Impact Fund is an independent, registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that focuses on providing immediate and direct assistance to those affected by natural and man-made disasters.

I am a local vineyard and winery owner who lives right off the Silverado Trail. I like many owe a lot to the surrounding communities (Lake, Sonoma and Napa) and am trying to bring together a number of respected voices to help pull together donations to help in the relief efforts.

Here is some video of the yountville hills east of Silverado Trail to the north of where I live in Napa.

I will continue to update people on this effort and the people who have gotten behind it along the way.

Best,

I traveled through Europe and the Middle East capturing the beauty I saw in the world and in other people. At the end of my trip, someone broke into the apartment I was staying in and stole all of my equipment. My MacBook, my hard drive, and most importantly my camera. All of my work from this summer has been taken away from me.

It has been very hard for me to wrap my mind around why this has happened to me but this is the situation I am in. I am raising these funds to help me replace the things that allow me to continue to create. Without my camera and my laptop I can longer create the art that has allowed me to live and thrive in Los Angeles and other places that I work as a freelance photographer.

It would mean the world to me if you could donate/contribute to this fund to help me begin creating again as soon as possible! Photogrphy is my such a huge part of my life, my camera is an extension of me and the thought of not being able to create because of the wrong doings/actions of another person really hurts.
View more of my Photography!

Check out my personal journal here!
