<div>On Saturday, Nov 25th, 2023, Hisham — a 20 yr old junior at Brown University — and his childhood friends Kinnan and Tahseen were walking to Hisham's grandmother's house for dinner in Burlington, Vermont, when all three were shot in an unprovoked attack.

<div>We are thankful that all three will survive this attack, and Hisham's friends are expected to make a full recovery. For Hisham, however, one of the bullets that struck him is lodged in his spine and has left him paralyzed from the chest down.

<div>Hisham's first thoughts were for his friends, then for his parents who were thousands of miles away. He has demonstrated remarkable courage, resilience and fortitude - even a sense of humor - even as the reality of his paralysis sets in.

<div>We, his family, believe that Hisham will change the world. He'll change the world through his spirit, his mind and his compassion for those much more vulnerable than himself, especially the thousands of dead in Gaza and many more struggling to survive the devastating humanitarian crisis unfolding there.

<div>This fund is intended to help cover the costs associated with his recovery - the long and uncertain rehabilitation needs, as well as providing Hisham what he needs to enable him to change the world for the good, as we know he will.

<div>These expenses include rehabilitation, but also on-going costs of his care and adaptive living needs. Though we anticipate some expenses being covered by insurance, there are vast financial needs that will not be. This fund is intended to address those needs. The family has received estimates of more than $1 million in the first year alone to cover anticipates costs associated with rehab, adaptive considerations, travel and more, and an estimate of more than $2.8 million over his lifetime (figures provided by Christopher Reeve Foundation and Kelly Brush Foundation).

<div>Hisham is a kind, gentle, brilliant young man with enormous potential and his whole life ahead of him. A Palestinian-Irish-American, he grew up in the West Bank and is a graduate of the Ramallah Friends School, a Quaker institution. He is pursuing a dual degree, studying math and archaeology at Brown. Hisham speaks seven languages, is a teacher assistant at Brown and is so dedicated to his studies that he has told his college professors he is determined to start the next semester “on time.” His professors and classmates eagerly await his return. <div>Hisham and his friends, Kinnan Abdalhamid and Tahseen Ahmad, all Palestinians who grew up together and attended the same Quaker school, were speaking Arabic and English, and wearing traditional Palestinian kiffeyah scarves, when they were approached by an unknown man who shot them with a handgun. Particularly given the ongoing violence in Gaza and the West Bank, the Burlington Police Department and FBI are investigating the attack as a possible hate crime.

<div>In a cruelly ironic twist, Hisham's parents had recommended he not return home over winter break, suggesting he would be safer in the US with his grandmother. Burlington is a second home to Hisham, who has spent summers and happy holidays with his family there. It breaks our hearts that these young men did not find safety in his home away from home.

Support For Hisham's Recovery

As most of you know, Bryan has recently acquired an ultra rare life threatening autoimmune disorder, TTP. There are no set causes, it has sudden onset, and he will have this his whole life. The disorder is when his blood cells attack other blood cells necessary for Bryan to sustain his organs and life. The sudden onset of TTP in early October caused Bryan to have a series of seizures due to internal hemorrhaging, landing him in a near fatal state. After being rushed to the ER, his doctors immediately suspected the signs of TTP and started the first of 38 blood plasma transfusions over a course of 6 weeks. His doctors are also awaiting lab results to determine if he has another life threatening disorder characterized by a low platelet count and kidney damage, called HUS. Please visit this website for more information: <a href="https://about-hus.com/">About HUS</a> . <br /><br />Since TTP is characterized by blood clotting due to a low platelet count, Bryan suffered a stroke while in the hospital that impaired his speech and cognition for the time being. He has improved and was released from the hospital the day after Thanksgiving. He hopes to have a full recovery from his stroke in 6-12 months, although a full recovery is not guaranteed. <br /><br />At the time of this onset, Bryan had a part time job as a college professor teaching dual credit British Literature courses for Houston Community College (HCC). Because his job was only part time, Bryan does not have medical insurance. Therefore you can understand that his hospital, doctor, and prescription bills are well into 6 figures and rising every day. When Bryan was hospitalized, he received very little income from HCC as a form of paid leave. This unfortunately put him above the federal poverty line, preventing him from qualifying for any sort of federal program to assist with his hospital bills or constant medical care that he requires now that he has been released. Further, since ObamaCare only covers routine care and will not fund any medical care dealing with his preexisting condition, the cost is far too great with very little benefit for Bryan to utilize this as an insurance possibility. Therefore, this Go Fund Me medical fund will specifically support Bryan's healthcare needs for the interim until he can hopefully get some form of assistance otherwise. He is currently applying for disability, which is a 6 month process to determine eligibility. We are so grateful to those who have supported Bryan's cause thus far. <br /><br />We continue to hope he will qualify for financial aid of some sort, but the fact remains that Bryan can spend a lifetime paying for this one episode of TTP with the guarantee of more to come. His ability to work from this day forward is in question. We are asking for you to please consider helping in any way. Help can be in the forms of:<br />1. Prayer or meditating for Bryan's healing and the ability to pay for his medical expenses.<br />2. Donating blood, plasma, and/or platelets to any blood center. My best friends, Crystal and Gil Larsen, received news last week that no parent ever wants to hear. <br /><br />Jude, their 16 year old, was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma.   Jude's treatment will consist of multiple aggressive rounds of chemotherapy, followed by surgery and then more chemotherapy and possibly radiation.   <br /><br />This treatment process could take anywhere from 9 to 18 months and can amount to significant costs that their insurance may not cover.  <br /><br />I want to share this with everyone who knows and loves this wonderful family so that we can all help out Jude.   <br /><br />Please join me in supporting Crystal, Gil and most important our sweet Jude.  <br /><br />Thank you so much.
