<div>Bobby grew up in South Carolina with a story as difficult as you can probably imagine. Through trauma, finding their trans identity, and discovering their neurodivergence, they have made and shared artwork that is powerful and moving. As an artist and student, they work toward practicing their creativity on a daily basis, and as their housemate and friend, I am lucky to witness and be inspired by them every day. Through the medium of film below, they talk about their art and approach to creating.

<div>Unfortunately, University (unnamed on purpose) denied them in-state tuition last semester. They were wrapped up in health concerns with pre-cervical cancer when the out of state decision was made last semester and didn't have the energy to fight it.

<div>This semester, they were ready to prove their residency.

<div>Even though Bobby was assured they would be granted in-state tuition this semester, they are in a process to prove their Colorado residency again, and it is not guaranteed. In-state tuition is approx $5,000, but they are being charged over $20,000 per semester. While this process groans on, classes have started, and Bobby will be dropped from classes if they don’t pay this unfair amount. Despite grants, loans, and scholarships, they are still being charged over $2,800, with no funds left for professional art supplies. As a first-generation student working hard to live off of their illustration income, this is too much.

<div>Bobby is using resources to fight the system (aka The School we are not Specifically Naming for Legal reasons) to stop the discrimination they are experiencing. In the meantime, we hope that we can raise enough money to keep them in their super cool classes this semester.

<div>Community building and community access to art are super important to both myself and Bobby. As a way to promote accessibility in the arts, they volunteer for Conspiracy Art Collective: a group of artists working to create spaces for artists to show and sell their work without any upfront expenses.

<div>Thornton Elementary is a Title 1 school where about 85% of students are eligible for free and reduced lunch. This means that accessing educational experiences is more difficult for our students and necessitates funding so as not to put additional burden on families.

<div>Each year, there are choir competitions all over the country and we have one right here in our backyard in Denver, CO. It is hosted at Elitch Gardens which means that students get to perform for judges and spend the rest of the day enjoying the park! As a student in choir in my own school years, experiences like this were formative and unforgettable and I'd like to provide this opportunity to my students as well.

Thornton Elementary Choir Go to Competition!

<div>It’s time for us to show up for them. Z is fundraising for their top surgery – a gender affirming procedure that will allow them to feel at home in their body without the daily pain of body dysmorphia.
</div>

<div>This mutual aid request comes during the midst of a trans genocide, when governments across our country are passing legislation to erase trans existence and trans joy. Those of you who are lucky enough to know Z personally know that Z uses their access as a trans person with privilege to fight for trans liberation every damn day. I cannot begin to count the number of trans folks that are still with us as a direct result of Z’s visibility, community care, advocacy, warm meals, and big Zaza hugs.

<div>The initial consult for this lifesaving procedure is $1,000, and the total out of pocket cost is $15,000.

<div>Z has raised this amount of money many times over for other folks in need, most often in small amounts from our community. <p>Isabel and her family were hit with a devastating loss when her husband, Jose Luis Cañon passed away on June 17, 2021. He passed away suddenly, and of natural causes. Jose Luis leaves behind his wife Isabel, their daughter Isabella (16), and their son Sebastian (9), as well as 2 other children who live in Miami.
</p>

<p>Isabel has been a valuable part of our Sandoval family and community for 5 years as a beloved and talented Primary Teacher. Jose Luis has been her support in every aspect of life. He was a loved father and husband, an extremely hard worker, and the main support for his family.
</p>

<p>After this devastating news Isabel and her family are having to worry about financial hardships due to medical expenses, funeral expenses, loss of income, etc. We are hoping to offset some of the burden that they are enduring by reaching out to our community. This money will go to Isabel to alleviate the overwhelming financial burden that comes with the sudden passing of a loved one. It will also provide support to her and her children through these deeply troubling times.

Support Isabel and her family

DPS teachers are striking for an array of reasons. Their salary schedule is the only item up for negotiation right now, so pay is the primary reason for the strike. However, embedded in these negotiations are issues that run deeper than wages, such as respect for teachers’ professionalism and their ability to have a career in the Denver Public Schools. Listed below are the key reasons for the impending strike:Teachers have unanimously agreed they need a salary schedule (based on experience, education/training) that provides sustainable, predictable base pay (like every other district), not another district invention. The DPS proposal is not transparent. <br /><br />• Teachers need the full $28 million to fund their proposal because Denver teachers' pay has fallen so far below the metro average due to DPS policies since 2008. <br /><br />• There’s plenty of money available in the $1 billion DPS budget to end the impasse. The Board of Education can work responsibly to reallocate the budget during the next 3 months. <br /><br />• The public will be watching how the budget is reallocated and expects that most of the reassignment of funds should come from significantly cutting the bloated bureaucracy in Central Administration. DPS far exceeds other school districts on the ratio of upper level administrators to educators who actually work in the classroom with students. <br /><br />• Bonuses paid to administrators who are already handsomely salaried is a source of 4 million dollars, at least, in the 2018-19 year <br /><br />• There should be money, somewhere, that was saved by DPS’s successful lobbying of the state legislature to reduce the employer contribution to PERA, the teachers’ retirement fund. In 2015, DPS got a reduction of 3.6%, which equates to a savings of approximately $17 million a year.<br /><br />While teachers are striking, they will not get paid. In fact, some are feeling like they are unable to strike because they need every penny of their wages every month-quite ironic, and proof that they need to be paid more! DCTA has a fund set up to help, but in a district this large, the communities at individual schools are trying to help their own teachers. These funds enable teachers in the building to donate to help their own colleagues and parents can support their children’s own teachers. This makes contributions a community-based effort where all can support each other on a smaller scale.<br /><br />We love our Sandoval community, and any funds not needed for direct emergency support will be donated to the school community.

Reese -- our son, our brother, our cousin, and our friend joined the ancestors on Monday, July 2, 2018. All who knew Reese saw him as a caring, compassionate, and loving soul.  One who went out of his way for others and always created a memorable time no matter where he was.  He loved his friends and family dearly and will be truly missed here.<br /><br />In an effort to help his family with expenses associated with his untimely passing, we call on our community during this time of celebrating his life.  We have created this GoFundMe page and graciously accept any contributions towards his homegoing expenses.<br /><br />Reese, 17,  was a 2018 graduate of Denver School of Science and Technology and was headed to the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley where he planned to study Biomedical Engineering.  Reese is the son of Beverly Grant and Roger Cobb and the brother of Bryce and  Blair.<br /><br />We thank you for your love and prayers during this time and we invite you to share your memories as we celebrate his life.

Carlos is a sixth grade student in my dual language Montessori classroom in a gentrifying northwest Denver neighborhood. There is a sixth grade trip that he can't afford to attend and we at Academia Ana Marie Sandoval want to help him get there. The sixth grade year in a Montessori education is a milestone year, where students mature at a rapid pace. Carlos has grown immensly this year depsite having to work twice as hard as his peers at times. He has initiated fundraisers to help pay for the trip and his family has been cooking delicous meals at community events.
