<strong>Help Us to Build Back Better</strong><br /><br />A few weeks back tragedy struck at Captain Ali’s workshop - The home of Flipflopi, the world’s first recycled plastic sailing boat, and Takataka Heroes, and Captain Ali’s own boatbuilding and carpentry yard. <br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/57231693_1621928601898466_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="57231693_1621928601898466_r.jpeg" /><br /><br />Fire ripped through the property and outbuildings - luckily no one was injured and we’re truly grateful for that - but a lot of machinery, tools and memories went up in flames. It only took a few minutes for the flames to roar through a storehouse, the makuti (palm) roofs and the heart of the workshop.<br /><br /><br />The call for help went out and it wasn’t long before 90 people arrived forming human chains passing water to ensure the fire didn’t spread further <br /><br /><br />We’re so grateful for those in the community who came to help us that day - without them, things could have been much worse.<br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/57231693_1621928325368119_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="57231693_1621928325368119_r.jpeg" /><br /><br /><strong>What we’re left with now</strong><br />The machinery and tools used to build the world's first plastic recycling dhow and countless other traditional dhows have been damaged beyond repair. Machinery donated to Takataka Heroes from Plastiki Rafiki was burnt beyond repair but the industrial shredder donated to us can just about be repaired to work again. <br /><br /><br />The electrics of the workshop were burnt through and everything in storage - including a tonne of recycled plastic - was destroyed. Much of the work that was taken to create a recycling space here in Lamu has been destroyed beyond repair.<br /><br /><br />This is why today we’re asking you to help us build back better.<br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/57231693_1621928385529827_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="57231693_1621928385529827_r.jpeg" /><br /><br /><strong>What we’ll do now</strong><br />Although we’re all devastated by what has happened, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. And that is the opportunity given to us to build back better. To really think about the space we need and the machinery we want to create a super-efficient recycling plant together here on Lamu Island.<br /><br /><br />With thanks to the Flipflopi supporter network and their dedication to set up the heritage boat building school and to build an even bigger boat to sail the world sharing the plastic revolution, we have large extrusion machinery en route to Lamu. The original plan was to house that in Ali’s workshop, however, we’re having to rethink that now. <br /><br /><br />As you might already know, both Flipflopi and Takataka Heroes are nothing if not ambitious. <div>Finding Charlies Voice is an Irish Registered Charity (CHY22899) that supports children and young adults with speech and language communication needs in Ireland.
</div>

<div>The charity was inspired by Charlie, now 9, but born with Verbal Dyspraxia - a rare neurological speech sound disorder, impacting about 1:1000 children worldwide. For reasons unknown, the pathways between the brain and the mouth have not developed, which results in unintelligible speech. It is also known as Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Children with Verbal Dyspraxia have immense difficulty planning the precise movements necessary to produce speech. Those with verbal dyspraxia need to be taught the precise motor movements necessary to form sounds and words. They need to hear and say a single word over 1000 times before it becomes natural output, and so progress is slow and time spent in therapy is long - often years and years. Their speech cannot be corrected without intensive, early and frequent intervention from a qualified Speech and Language Therapist.

<div>Will (Daddy to Charlie), completed the <strong>2022</strong> <strong>IRONMAN CORK</strong> in a bid to raise much needed funds to support children and to continue our communication board initiative. This was a gruelling course covering a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and finishing with a 42.2km run! Every stroke, pedal and footstep was made in Charlie's name and in the name of every single child out there that needed help and support and we vowed that until he could use his own voice, we needed to be his.

WE ARE IN THE MIDST OF A GLOBAL PANDEMIC. SUPERMARKET SHELVES ARE EMPTY. BUSINESSES ARE CLOSING. PEOPLE ARE LOSING WORK. <br /><br />1.3 MILLION FOOD BANK PARCELS WERE HANDED OUT BY THE TRUSSELL TRUST IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS LAST YEAR, to people who would have gone hungry if not for charitable help.<br /><br />I've been a food bank user myself. I'm only here today because of the kindness of strangers - donating food, distributing it, identifying that I was struggling and helping me out. <br /><br />And now the supermarket shelves are empty. People are filling up their own trollies and cupboards to try to deal with the panic of an unknown pandemic - and food banks up and down the country are running out of food.<br /><br />As the impact of coronavirus takes hold, and the knock on effect of unpaid work, unfulfilled contracts, zero hours workers getting literally zero hours, new universal credit claims (currently a six week delay, who knows how much longer it will be with so many new claims to process?!), More and more people are going to find themselves at the door of the food bank, only to find that their shelves are empty too.<br />
<div><br />It's my birthday today (17th March) and I'm sitting here on my sofa at half past midnight truly thankful to be seeing another birthday at all. But all I want - really - is for people to dig as deep as they can and help restock struggling food banks so that the most vulnerable people in our neighbourhoods can access a little help in this precarious and difficult time.<br /><br />People who can't afford to stockpile. People who buy their shopping in meagre amounts day to day. People who were already struggling who now won't be able to make ends meet.<br /><br />We don't know how Covid19 is going to end up. We have no idea of the impact on our economy, society, communities. But poverty is already isolating, lonely, and exhausting. If we all turn inwards and only look after ourselves, more and more people are going to slip through the cracks.<br /><br />All the money raised here does directly to the TRUSSELL Trust who will use it to support people in need and at risk of food insecurity and hunger throughout the UK.<br /><br />If you can't afford to donate - sharing it on social media is free.
