<div>We are a team of scientists, engineers, and technologists who are fortunate to be working on NASA's great flagship missions -- JWST, Roman, and the future Habitable Worlds Observatory -- as part of dedicated and cohesive teams that include valued colleagues from JPL, IPAC, Carnegie, Caltech, and other institutions affected by the fires. Many of our colleagues are suffering the effects of these fast-moving fires. <strong>Teamwork is one of our great virtues in this work, and we want to support our Pasadena colleagues through this crisis.</strong>

<div><strong>Our identity and goals:</strong> This GoFundMe was started and is being managed by Jason Tumlinson, an Astronomer at STScI in Baltimore. I am a member of the HabWorlds collaboration with many valued colleagues in Pasadena who have been affected by the Eaton fire. I am managing this effort with participation and advice from other members of the our collaboration and its friends with SoCal contacts (e.g. John O'Meara, Marc Postman, Giada Arney, Grant Tremblay).

<div><strong>Intended Beneficiaries:</strong>

<div>The funds raised will be distributed to team members and their families who have experienced material loss or significant displacement. We aim to have an immediate impact for affected collaborators, with emphasis on their urgent needs for temporary housing, meals, and replacements of lost clothing or other essential items. With the situation evolving so quickly, we have not yet composed a complete list of beneficiaries. We request that anyone at JPL/IPAC/Caltech affected by the fire contact the organizer (jasontumlinson at gmail) to let us know their needs. Co-organizer Grant Tremblay is keeping a list of affected colleagues, please reach out to him to place yourself or someone you know on the list (granttremblay at gmail). We are especially interested in assistance to students, postdocs, and other early career researchers who may have less in financial resources to weather this crisis. Again please reach out to one of us to place yourself or another colleague on our list. <em>Note: Support from this effort is NOT limited to specific projects, missions, or institutions. We are open to our teammates across JPL, IPAC, Caltech, etc. </em>

<div><strong>Plan for disbursement: </strong>We commit to full use funds to benefit the categories of beneficiaries described above. We will adapt to their needs with gift cards for hotels, grocery stores, clothing, and other essential items, paid for by the organizers by collected funds. Help JPL & Roman & HabWorlds teammates in Pasadena

<p>We are raising funds to help the family of our colleague Prof. Kevin France (University of Colorado), who lost their house to the Marshall fire outside Boulder CO, on Dec 30/31, 2021. All funds will be applied to meet the immediate needs of the family as they specify. The family will be in temporary housing for the near future and we are raising funds to help them get their household re-established as the first priority. <br /><br />More details: <br />- the organizers of this fundraiser are Jason Tumlinson (JHU/STScI, Baltimore) and John O’Meara (Keck, Waimea), two professional colleagues of Prof France who have worked closely with him on the NASA-sponsored LUVOIR mission study team. <br />- The campaign is being funded by other teammates and collaborators of his to assist the family in need and in honor of Kevin’s service and leadership within the astronomy community.<br />- We have been in touch with Kevin all through this process to ensure the funds are collected and disbursed according to his preferences and the needs of his family.<br />- So far we have delivered electronic gift cards for eg, Target and Macy’s to Kevin to get the family started on re-establishing their household in temporary housing. We plan to continue this method of using the funds for the time being, until Kevin directs us otherwise or funds are exhausted. <p>On May 29, 2021, Emily and Matt were blessed with the birth of their son Martin “Marty” Cross. Marty honored us all with his presence for one month, and then tragically, Marty was taken from them on June 29, 2021. Marty was a perfect baby, always happy and content. He provided so much light to the lives of everyone around him, especially his big brother Raphie. Raphie so enjoyed being a big brother and loved Marty with all of his heart. While Marty was only able to share this world for a short time, he made an incredible impact on the lives of all those who loved him. The one thing that is certain, is that he will never be forgotten. This loss is unbearable, and the family is just trying to process how to move forward without Marty.
</p>

<p>While we can’t begin to understand the pain of losing a child, we can try to make this time easier to bear for Emily and Matt. In addition to the tragic loss of their son, Emily and Matt will also need to find a new living situation as soon as possible. We all ask ourselves how we can help as there are no words that can make this better. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to bring Marty back. There is a way to help Emily and Matt during this difficult time, and that is to provide some financial assistance with memorial and moving expenses. This will be to help them navigate through this difficult time with a little less to worry about. Some help with these financial responsibilities will allow them to take the time that they need to grieve as a family.

<p>Everyone who knows Emily and Matt know that they are the kindest, most caring people and that they would do anything to help someone in need. This holds especially true for those that they love. The goal is just a number that I plugged in, not a specific amount needed. Now while I don’t expect anyone to contribute their life savings, I wanted to give people a way to help Emily and Matt with whatever is feasible.
