<div>I'm fundraising for a dear friend, a Queen of Dance, a woman with the biggest heart, Ninafrika. She is one of the most striking personalities in Cabarete, DR, the Founder and Director of Ninafrika Dance School, and the kindest soul on Earth.

<div>If you visited the North Coast of the Dominican Republic, you might have taken a bachata dance class with Nina or the "Unleash Your Sexuality" dance workshop. She probably helped you unleash your inner Diva or made you feel great after just one class.  She gifted you her good energy, and now it's our time to help her.

<div>She had a serious health scare last week, and we almost lost her.

<div>Nina has been working non-stop for several months to save enough money for an operation to remove multiple uterine fibrosis cysts at a good clinic in  Paris. She then waited two months for a spot to open up. Finally, she was admitted. After what usually is an ambulatory procedure, Nina didn't get better. Instead, she had difficulty breathing and complained to the doctors, who kept dismissing her concerns.

<div>When they eventually checked her lungs, they wheeled her straight into the ER and then the ICU: she had a pulmonary embolism. Nina spent eight days in the ICU, on breathing tubes and catheters, unable to eat or move. In her own words, she "went through hell": a heavy gynecological procedure followed by almost complete lung failure.

<div>I asked her how I could help. Nina said that the mental support on social media has been tremendous, but she's also in "a financial hole" and doesn't have enough money even for the return ticket from France. Her dance school is on hold, and so are her rent payments.

<div>However, our Nina is a fighter. She has many "amazing projects" planned for the fall, a new assistant is starting in September, and she has faith that things must turn out better.  Her father died of pulmonary embolism. Nina lived and is recovering at her sister's place in France. We should help our Queen of Dance to recover so that she can keep shining her magic light on all of us.

Help Nina Get Back on Her Feet After Life Scare

<div>Please join me in support for the Vanterpool-Stanford family, and their son, Ryan, an 8th Grader at Speyer. This wonderful family is recovering from the emotional, physical, and financial toll of Ryan’s cancer diagnosis last fall. One substantial challenge was finding a doctor who treats this rare condition in children. After an extensive national search the Vanterpool-Stanfords found a specialist who could care for Ryan, and his surgery and treatments went well. Ryan is now back on his feet and is going to fully recover. They know he has been very lucky, and they have been sharing this experience in the community to spread the word to other families about the risk of malignant melanoma, even for children, and even for people of color. In the meantime, meaningful medical bills continue to arrive due to the out-of-network nature of the health care that Ryan required. I am inviting you to join me in my effort to raise funds to support the Vanterpool-Stanfords to meet this need. My goal is $25,000, which will cover these extra expenses for the family. Support Ryan's Cancer Recovery

<p><strong>PLEASE HELP US SUPPORT HIGHLY VULNERABLE WOMEN AND THEIR FAMILIES IN AFGHANISTAN</strong><br /><br /> <br />We URGENTLY NEED FUNDS TO EVACUATE AND PROVIDE EMERGENCY RELIEF to our network of Afghan employees, trainers, associates and beneficiaries. We must offer sanctuary and assistance to those who trusted us to help them, as they tried to help themselves.<br /><br />Afghanistan has fallen into the hands of the Taliban. Women are being stoned and whipped for wearing ‘inappropriate’ clothes. The reprisals are happening now. Afghan women and men associated with foreign NGOs and aid programs are in extreme danger. <br /><br />Since 2013, Future Brilliance has worked alongside Afghan women and men to develop livelihoods in an effort to bring peace and prosperity to Kabul and remote Afghan villages. Since the Taliban took Kabul, our expert, crisis-management and humanitarian team has been working around the clock to facilitate the safe exodus of the most vulnerable Afghans, and to provide support for those who cannot leave. <br /><br /><strong>We will not abandon those who choose to stay behind. </strong><br /><br />This is a rapidly changing situation and we intend to adapt and respond to the changing circumstances. Our priorities currently are:<br /><br />   1. Safe passage and emergency evacuation of at-risk persons, with a focus on Afghan women and children. This involves collating paperwork for eligible evacuees and helping them to access, with our team on the ground and in receiving countries, any and all viable safe passage options. This focus is both on the airport and land border solutions, pending dire security conditions.<br /><br />   2. Practical and financial support for asylum seekers, who will need assistance to establish themselves in their host country. We will supply clothes, SIM cards, laptops and assistance with re-skilling and job-sourcing in their new country. <br /><br />   3. Practical and financial support for the Future Brilliance trainees who will remain in Afghanistan. This includes ongoing marketing for their products so they may continue to make a living in-country.<br /><br />   4. Funding orphanages and safehouses to protect the vulnerable women and children sheltering there.<br /> <br />Future Brilliance has worked with over 100 Afghan women and artisans across the country to deliver training in digital literacy, artisanal jewelry making, co-operative development and business skills. Our trainees have in turn trained or employed over 1,300 artisans, most of them in rural areas, and many of them women.<br /><br />The Afghans, in turn, placed their trust in us. Each one is now in the crosshairs for the ruthless payback they fear the Taliban will mete out when the last of the US and UK military planes leave Afghanistan.<br /><br />One of our employees, a young Afghan woman trapped in Kabul, contacted us today. She told us:<br /><br /><em> “We are in trouble. We don’t know what to do. We are so confused. We don’t know about our future, even about tomorrow. What will happen? Many people have left Afghanistan already. We went to the airport, but there was no one to take to the US. The Taliban fired at us with guns, and we returned home. Unfortunately, we did not get a visa to go to another country. I wish you to do something for me, like (help get us a) visa or airplane ticket to take me from here to come directly to the US or the UK. Otherwise I think there is no chance for me.”</em><br /><br /><em>“Today the Taliban shared news about their plans. They will do forced marriage with young Afghan girls. Sometimes I think, suppose it will happen, I will kill myself and never go with a Talib”.</em><br /><br /><em>“We are so scared. They fire with guns around the houses. They make us wear black scarves and black masks. The situation is so worse for us. We didn't even think it would happen like that. I don't know about our future. It looks like a horror movie for us and we don't know what to do...”</em><br /><br />Another young Future Brilliance trainee wrote to us today,<br /><br /><em>“You introduced me to the Digital Literacy training and we were given tablets by the end of the training. You are my only international contact right now and I’m reaching out because I know you have always helped girls and women and provided a lot of opportunities for them”. </em><br /><br /><em>“I’m in desperate need of help and I feel like I’m going to die in Kabul. Please help me. I can not stay here and be caged by the Taliban. I have big dreams. I want to do something good. I want to be free. Please, please, please help me. I have been crying nonstop for a few days. You are my only hope”.</em><br /><br />We have a profound responsibility towards these brave girls whose lives we have touched and whose hopes we have raised. We are trying to secure safe passage for them, so that no friend and ally is left behind on the battlefield, and to support those who cannot leave. Translators, journalists, photographers, designers, women who studied in our jewelry training program (or the men who allowed them to travel and study), teachers, administrators and our associates, will be a target for the new radical Islamist regime.<br /> <br />The situation is changing by the hour. Charter, government and military flights are continuing to evacuate asylum seekers. Our links with US and UK government and diplomatic channels, developed during 9 years of work in Afghanistan, will give us the ability to deploy contributions responsibly and effectively, streamlining the visa application process. <strong>We shall also do so transparently. URGENT: SUPPORT AT RISK AFGHAN WOMEN & FAMILIES -$

<strong>West Side Community Organization<br /><br /></strong>Welcome to our coalition of dedicated neighbors, extending from Central Park West to Riverside Drive and from West 60th street to West 110th street. <br /><br />Our beloved community is filled with a rich history, world-renowned parks and museums, amazing restaurants and local businesses, nonprofit service organizations, houses of worship to accommodate any faith, and many highly rated public and private schools.<br /><br />In May 2020, the City of New York, without any public input or discussion, began relocating over 700 individuals struggling with homelessness from properly equipped shelters to hotels without adequate support.  Many of these individuals are mentally ill, struggling with drug and alcohol addiction and some are violent offenders on parole for crimes including sexual acts against children.  The decisions to place these individuals in shelters in heavily residential areas and next door to elementary schools lacked any consideration or common sense. These individuals are not receiving the critical social and mental health services they so desperately require. This lack of planning is a disservice to these individuals and the community. <br /><br />We have repeatedly reached out to our local officials for help, and have either received no response or condescending platitudes. Oftentimes, they have made personal attacks on our character.  Our voices have been ignored. <br /><br />Now is the time for action.  <br /><br />That’s why neighbors and friends have come together to form the <strong>West Side Community Organization</strong>.  We are an unpaid, volunteer, non-partisan grassroots organization who met virtually through the recently formed Facebook group, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/3199698486785596/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Upper West Siders for Safer Streets</a> , which has grown to a community of nearly 10,000 concerned members.  We are committed to preserving the qualities that make the Upper West Side a great place to live, work, raise a family and enjoy retirement.  We refuse to accept that nothing can be done to solve these issues. <br /><br /> We must protect our children, while at the same time demand that the city provide real services to these struggling individuals.  The current situation is not only unacceptable, it is inhumane. <br /><br /><strong>The West Side Community Organization</strong> is a 501(c)4 not-for-profit social welfare organization. <div>Over the years, Marie has found forever homes for <strong>190 dogs </strong>who now live their best lives in the DR or in Canada. To achieve that, she had them all treated for their diseases, vaccinated, dewormed and neutered. It's a full time job. And she does it alone, relying on donations from dog lovers and her own funds.

<div>I first met Marie at the local vet, while waiting for my own rescue to be vaccinated. She held a week-old puppy in her arms. When I congratulated her on the new dog, she said, <strong>"He was dumped on my street. Another one."</strong> I asked to explain. She did: every week entire litters of unwanted puppies are dumped on streets and back alleys; dogs get left behind when their owners move, or thrown out when medical bills become too steep. It's an epidemic. She takes them all in, and she gives them a second chance in life. But now she's full, and the costs are overwhelming.
