The tumour has been surgically removed, but Sam now faces a long and uncertain journey — including chemotherapy, possible radiotherapy, and a complete halt to work and driving. Meanwhile, the daily costs of life remain: rent, food, school fees, medical bills — £8,000–£10,000 per month. </em></strong>

Stand With Sam: Help a Young Family Through Brain Cancer

<div><br />On December 29th, 2021, Bearskin Lake First Nation declared a state of emergency due to an outbreak of COVID 19 Omicron infections. <br /><br />Mr. Leonard (Wayne) Brown is a Band Councilor for Bearskin Lake First Nation. In our community, we have a Chief and Council and have a political office with an enormous responsibility of fulfilling the vision of the community while protecting Bearskin Lake First Nation’s treaty and aboriginal rights. Mr. Leonard Brown is one of the members of our community’s band council and took on the job in taking care of our community, along with another band council member and few other people, who did not test positive for COVID. Most of the community members and half of the Band Council were in isolation.  Bearskin Lake First Nation is a small, remote community with a population of 450. The first case was detected December 28, 2021 and 218 individuals have tested positive which roughly means fifty percent of the on-reserve population was infected. Those infected include the administrative and essential staff of the band’s administration, operations and maintenance unites. Most of our households were on lockdown order, even the ones who did not test positive, were living with members that did test positive. <br /><br />The funds that were raised through Go Fund Me will be withdrawn and deposited into the Bearskin Lake First Nation Administration account. These funds will be used to cover food, supplies and wood cutting/delivery expenses for the community members. The community was in full lockdown, so the covid-19 Omicron virus can be contained. Therefore, the community members were unable to go shopping for their necessities and to get wood to heat up their homes. Most of the houses depend on wood for warmth. And honorariums will be given to our frontline workers (the foot on the ground) and any other expenses that had occurred to safely run our community during the outbreak. The Chief and council had asked for support from the Canadian government and military to provide assistance but it did not happen. Our own local people stepped up to provide assistance to the community.

Bearskin Lake Covid 19 Outbreak - State of Emergen

A State of Emergency was declared Saturday, November 9th in Bearskin Lake First Nation when a massive ice blockage on the Severn River began to flood the community of approximately 450 people. Even before the flood, our community has never had streetlights, mainline plumbing to our houses, pavement, clean water, sewage systems, sidewalks, and grass. Yet this flood has made our community unsafe making evacuation our only option. Sadly, there has been an absence of support from the federal government and the military during this crisis. <br /><br />Our community continues to be at risk for flash floods. Helicopters have been flown in to help with the evacuations of over 350 people. Vulnerable families with infants and elders have been evacuated to Sioux Lookout and the remaining population is currently being evacuated to Thunder Bay. Each person fled from their homes with only a 13lb carry on and a 40lb checked bag with very little hope of returning any time soon. We have been advised it may be a week, a month or even until spring before we are allowed to return to our homes.<br /><br />There are 3 ways you can help the devastated people from Bearskin Lake:<br />1. Begin to talk about it and learn more about the impoverished situation for Canada’s First People.<br />2. Share this post.<br />3. Consider making a financial donation, your help will reach further than you can imagine.<br /><br />All funds will be directed to Deputy Chief Billy Kamenawatamin of Bearskin Lake who will distribute funds where it is needed most. The children, elders and families in Bearskin need your help. <br /><br />Remember, this is Canada, and everyone deserves to feel like they matter.<br /><br />The beneficiary will be Roy Brown, who is the president of Monica will be withdrawing the money. <br />It will then be given to Choose Life Organization, who will be giving ALL PROCEEDS to the Bearskin Community Chief.

Bearskin Lake Flood Evacuation

The family suffered a tragic loss here in the community of Bearskin Lake First Nation.  A loss of a youth to suicide. We would like to help the family, the donations will be used for mattresses, clothing, house hold items, etc.

Hello Good Day everyone! My name is Tina Sainnawap and my nephew Dennis Mckay and his lovely girlfriend Miranda Anderson,  their little daughter Miss Dayna Mckay, who is 5 years old was brutally assaulted in ways unimaginable. This happened on September 16, 2015.<br /><br />Miss Dayna is now recovering  at Victoria Hospital in London Ontario. She is with her auntie Janice Anderson who escorted her from Kasabonika Lake Ontario Canada. Miss Dayna's parents were here in Thunder Bay, Ontario for medical reasons when this incident happened. The following day, they left to go be with Miss Dayna along with their baby girl. It is very expensive to travel so far away from home to be with a family <br />member especially times such as this. Transportation, accomodations and meals can easily add up.  <br /><br />Miss Dayna has undergone 3 surgeries for the injuries she suffered. Her physical external injuries are healing,; however,  internal injuries will take about 4-6 weeks to heal. If she doesnt heal properly she will undergo another surgery to fix internal serverity of the damages that was inflicted upon such a little girl. I won't go any detail exactly what happened but its awful. Please pray that she will heal inside so she doesnt have to go through another surgery. Her little body been through so much truama already.
