<div>Hi, I am raising money on behalf of my friend Sadie. Sadie is 41 and has always been a strong fit outgoing person. In March 2024 Sadie started with a pain in her arm which felt like she had sleep funny. This has now progressed and her arm muscles continually spasming, her hand is locked in a “claw like” position. The pain and spasms have also spread to her back and she is stuck in a very painful unnatural posture. It’s a bit like if you have ever gotten cramp in your calf and the excruciating pain that causes, having that in your arm and back continuously without it stopping. She is unable to sit or stand up, therefore she spends all day lay down whilst her body continues to spasm. She is unsafe on a bed due to the spasms and is on the floor. This has caused horrendous bruising, carpet burns and sores to her skin. She is unable to complete the simplest of tasks such as bathing, cooking for herself, feeding herself. She has had CT scans and MRI scans which had to be done under general anaesthetic as she couldn’t keep still enough due to her spasms. So far no diagnosis has been found and she is on a waiting list for the pain management team. She has been to A and E 11 times, 3 via ambulance. The picture above is of her on the floor in A and E with the average wait time being 7-9 hours. The longest was 14 and a half hours with her on the floor in excruciating pain. She has also been admitted to hospital numerous times but still no diagnosis has been found. She has been living with this pain since March 2024 and the earliest appointment for the pain management team is July 2025. Due to the nature of this illness and its being completely debilitating nature Sadie is unable to work and has lost custody of her 12 year old son as she is unable to take care of herself or him. The impact of this illness to her personally and her family is catastrophic.

<div>We are raising money to pay for private treatment as she can’t live with this pain any longer. The initial consultation appointment is £250. Any further tests, appointments and treatments are on top. We have estimated £2000 to start with but costs could easily exceed this.

<div>EDIT- please note the picture above is in A and E. A lot of people have commented about the carpet. To clarify, there was no space in A and E so she was moved to the entrance in the door way, this is why there is carpet. Through the first double doors there is a carpeted area which is where Sadie was with lots of others over spilling from A and E. Through the next double doors is A and E and yes that section is not carpeted for obvious reasons. Hope that clears up the picture.

<div>So far last week we saw two different specialists, these cost £550. We have been referred to a specialist in Bristol and are awaiting for an appointment with her. Her initial fee is £275 for the first appointment. I am also looking into ways of getting Sadie there safely as she can’t not sit to travel. She needs to be able to lie flat and on a back seat of a car is not safe for a 2 hour journey. Also the physical toll it will take on her body will be massive and she will probably not be able to travel back the same day. This will all be funded by your kind donations.

<div>I’ve dedicated my career to education, training as a secondary school Design &amp; Technology teacher in 2010. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching thousands of students across South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire, and Greater London. Supporting schools, students, and teachers has been my passion, and I’ve loved learning about different communities and their creative ideas.

<div>I have always been active and healthy - eating well, not smoking or taking drugs, rarely drinking, and running Parkrun with my kids every weekend. On a typical day, I would walk 10,000 to 15,000 steps through work and life. I never expected to face something like this.
</div>

<div><strong>The Diagnosis That Changed Everything</strong>

</div>
<div>In November 2024, I started experiencing severe headaches and fatigue. I reached out to my GP multiple times, but I was told it was just migraines. On November 12th, I couldn’t take the pain any longer and called 111. Within an hour, I was sent to my GP, and within minutes, I was rushed to Kingsmill Hospital with a dangerously high 42-degree temperature and severe sensitivity to light.

<div>Thanks to our incredible NHS, I was given a CT scan immediately. The results were devastating—a large tumour was found in my brain. Further scans confirmed that I had glioblastoma, and I was introduced to my neuro-oncology clinical nurse specialist. The swelling caused by the tumour had already shifted my brain by 8mm, causing immense pressure in my head.

<div>After five days on steroids to reduce the swelling, I was transferred to Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, where I underwent brain surgery to remove as much of the tumour as possible and collect samples for further analysis.
</div>

</div>
<div>Determined to fight, I pushed myself to recover quickly so I could return home to my family after two weeks apart from my children.
</div>

<div><strong>The Harsh Reality of Glioblastoma</strong>
</div>

</div>
<div>In December 2024, I began 30 sessions of radiotherapy and chemotherapy at Nottingham City Hospital. While these treatments help, they are not a cure. Glioblastomas are relentless—only 25% of patients survive beyond one year. I refuse to become another statistic.
</div>

</div>
<div>I began researching my condition and was shocked to learn that the same standard treatments have been used for decades. I knew I had to explore every possible option to give myself the best chance.
</div>

<div><strong>Why I Need Your Help</strong>

<div>I am now seeking hyperthermy and immunotherapy treatment, both cutting-edge approaches that are not available on the NHS but have shown incredible promise for grade 4 brain tumours.

<div>Hyperthermy works alongside the chemotherapy and uses high temperatures to damage and kill the cancerous cells. The immunotherapy treatment uses my own tumour, which is currently frozen and stored at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, to create a personalised vaccine. This vaccine will train my immune system to recognise and fight the cancer as it regrows.

Aside from some (rather nasty) side effects from the various treatments he’s gone through, he has had no symptoms, but the reality is he is dying of a very rare form of cancer, Mucosal Melanoma.

I remember the day he was diagnosed, it was during COVID and so I wasn’t allowed into his appointment and had waited outside in the car. When he came out, we sat in the carpark and cried. He’d just celebrated his 45th birthday.

<div>Four years on, our family’s journey with cancer has been a whirlwind of hope and disappointment (you can read more below). It’s included amazing treatment at The Royal Marsden – six surgeries including a ground-breaking surgery to be featured on Ch4’s Super Surgeons in summer 2024, immunotherapies and a clinical trial.

<div>Jonathan faces each challenge with courage and resilience. In addition to the many hospital visits, surgeries, and treatments, we’re still parents to our two young children. School runs, work, kids’ clubs, and dog walks simply don’t stop for cancer. The world carries on even though it feels like ours has been brought to an abrupt halt.

<div><strong>As options for treatment on the NHS in the UK run out for Jonathan we have been exploring international alternatives. </strong><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7nzdlTKN8s" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TILs treatment</a>, successful for other Mucosal Melanoma patients in the USA, remains inaccessible in the UK for his cancer. Jonathan's only chance at accessing this innovative treatment lies in fundraising efforts to generate the (£350K) needed.

<div>Jonathan has always been fit and healthy and barring the side effects of the cancer treatments, still is. Which is why this stings so much and often feels so profoundly unfair. His physical fitness has helped tremendously during the treatment in that he has bounced back quickly from surgery. For example, his being able to leave hospital after major surgery in just five days instead of the predicted 10.

<div>It has been a long, challenging and often heart-breaking journey but not one that we’re prepared to give up on!
</div>

<li><strong>March 2020</strong> (COVID lockdown) – Visit to the doctor with changes to a mole – cream prescribed.
</li>
<li><strong>September 2020</strong> – Return to the doctor, referral to urologist and a biopsy. Within a week we received the awful diagnosis of stage 2 Mucosal Melanoma - an extremely rare cancer. Massive shock!
</li>
<li><strong>November 2020</strong> – First time in surgery. No visitors allowed due to COVID (which was hard). Six-hour operation to remove the cancer and surgeon was confident he had removed it completely.
</li>
<li><strong>End of November 2020</strong> - Three weeks later the call came, the first of our many huge dips on this emotional rollercoaster of a cancer journey. The lab reported that the cancer had not been removed with clear margins and the operation would have to be repeated. So, on the 17th of December just as we were preparing for Christmas with our five and seven year old, Jonathan went back to University College London Hospital for his second surgery.

<li><strong>January 2021</strong> – Post operative report showed cancer had been removed with clear margins, three-monthly scans in place. We were feeling optimistic!
</li>
<li><strong>May 2022</strong> – Quarterly scan spotted something we didn’t want to hear – an abnormal growth in Jon’s lymph nodes. Lymph node removal and a positive test for Mucosal Melanoma cancer, UCLH referred us to the Melanoma specialists at The Royal Marsden
</li>
<li><strong>May 2022</strong> – First visit to The Royal Marsden to confirm cancer had spread past primary site. Within six weeks, Jonathan’s groin lymph nodes were removed. Three out of the 13 proved to be cancerous.
</li>
<li><strong>June 2022</strong> - Immunotherapy started. Our first day on the chemo ward at the Marsden was tough as seeing other people experiencing treatment made it become real. The chemo ward became our regular six-weekly haunt.
</li>
<li><strong>April 2023</strong> - Cycle eight of nine immunotherapy infusions and the consultant called to say unfortunately we’ve spotted a tumour on Jonathan’s lung. Recommendation to stop immunotherapy as it was having no effect. No treatment left in the UK. We needed to find a clinical trial while the tumour keeps getting bigger.
</li>
<li><strong>June 2023</strong> – We got married. Why not? We wanted to make memories before Jonathan got too ill.
</li>
<li><strong>July 2023</strong> – Started clinical trial. This trial had some truly awful side effects. It was a race to get home every night before the rigors and fever or chills set in. Jon managed three cycles of five days a week so 15 infusions of this before it was confirmed it was having no impact.
</li>
<li><strong>September 2023</strong> – Surgeon to remove the cancer from Jonathan’s lung with the hope that we would then have 12-18 months before anything else appeared. Jonathan’s surgery and the story surrounding it will be featured on the second series of Ch4 Super Surgeons a chance at life (<a href="https://www.channel4.com/programmes/super-surgeons-a-chance-at-life)" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><a href="https://www.channel4.com/programmes/super-surgeons-a-chance-at-life" target="_blank" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://www.channel4.com/programmes/super-surgeons-a-chance-at-life</a>)</a> due to be aired in Summer 2024.

<li><strong>January 2024</strong> – 6 weeks later and sadly the cancer had returned, Jonathan started dual drug immunotherapy in mid-February 2024. We won’t know if it’s working or not till after the fourth infusion around late May. In the meantime, the tumours have been growing and spreading, the largest grew 4cm in four weeks and a new one appeared near his heart with new widespread sub cutaneous growth too.

<div><strong>What is Mucosal Melanoma?</strong>
</div>
<div>Not to be confused with melanoma (skin cancer), Mucosal Melanoma is an extremely rare cancer which has no cure and a survival rate past five years of just 14%. Only 1% of all Melanoma cancers are Mucosal, unlike standard Melanoma it forms in the mucus layers under the skins surface, it has a very poor prognosis as it normally presents so late in stage that it has generally moved beyond the primary site. <a href="https://www.curemelanoma.org/about-melanoma/types/mucosal-melanoma#:~:text=Mucosal%252525252520melanoma%252525252520is%252525252520a%252525252520rare,Mouth" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">More information here</a>.
