<div>I’m Julie — a solo mom of two bright little Lights in this world and a psychiatric nurse practitioner. Life has changed drastically in the past year, and I am learning how to navigate life with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) and complex trauma.

<div>This season of Hard Things has carried stranger-than-fiction vibes. I often question the realness of it all. But I know that this hardship, this healing, and these holy moments (what I call the Sacred in the Suck) are not only real. They are the realest real.

<div>After six weeks away at what I affectionately call "Trauma Camp" (residential trauma treatment), I’m now home as my whole Self.
</div>

</div>
<div>I just started my dream job providing trauma-informed psychiatric care for neurodivergent folks along with a team of amazing psychologists and therapists. I love this work and am so grateful to finally be back in action. Now I get to do it in a specialized capacity that combines my nerdy clinical brain with my lived experiences to offer the best care I can. 
</div>

<div>But building a full client base takes time.

<div>I am in that rebuilding phase now. The future looks bright, but I'm not there yet. To stay afloat this month, we need some help.

<div>Gift cards to Amazon, Kroger, or Target are also deeply appreciated! The girls are growing like weeds, and we’re burning through summer supplies like sunscreen and bug spray. (If I could, I would absolutely buy stocks in Blue Lizard sunscreen and Off! Skintastic bug repellent. They keep these little fair-skinned, all-you-can-eat mosquito buffets happy and healthy.)

Reclamation Time!

<div>Last week, Julie experienced a medical emergency involving her nervous system. She is currently hospitalized but doing well. She learned from an amazing team of physicians that what her body was experiencing was a Functional Neurological Disorder that presented as a sudden loss of movement and speech. This disorder involves a loss of communication between the brain and the body through the nervous system. For Julie, it significantly impacted her mobility and speech. The good news is that Julie’s functional deficits are temporary. She is expected to have a full recovery with physical therapy and occupational therapy.

<div>The less-than-ideal news is two-fold:
</div>
<div>1) It will take some time for her body to heal. Her muscles are very weak and easily fatigued. Much to her chagrin, she will need a lot of rest and help getting around when she gets home. No chasing little girls around for a while.
</div>
<div>2) Relapses can happen without warning, especially when fatigue and high-stress levels are involved. And if you know Julie, you know that she is going to have to make some big life adjustments to lower that risk.
</div>

<div>Julie will not be able to work until her body and mind regain enough strength and energy to provide safe care to her patients. As independent as she likes to be, Julie’s body has forced her to slow down and to ask for help, physically, emotionally, and financially. She needs this time to heal, so she can get back to caring for her girls, her patients, and herself in a more sustainable way.

We have always known that we wanted to adopt a child, but we could not imagine that we would adopt the very first child placed in our home as therapeutic foster parents.  Will came to live with us almost two years ago.  We knew very little about the 15 year old boy who would be at our home only 2 hours after receiving a phone call from a social worker on a cold Monday night, just two days before Thanksgiving!  And we didn't know how long he would stay with us and that this  young man--who loves hoodies and hot chocolate by the way--would come to call us Mom and Dad.  But we were open to whatever child walked through our front door.<br /><br />After a two-year journey together with this hilarious and bright guy, we will soon finalize the adoption of our son Will in the coming months! We have established this fund because we will need some help with expenses no longer covered by therapeutic foster care, including extra court fees and other costs as we continue to support his specialized health and education needs.  <br /><br />He needs your help.<br /><br />Any help you can give is very appreciated, and thanks to everyone who has already been a part of these two years and will continue to build a community of love and support around Will!

Will's Adoption Fund

I am a RN diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma so naturally I had to organize this in SBAR...<br><br>Situation: I have had a cough without explanation or resolve since January 2013. Following a chest biospy in mid-August, I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. <br><br>Background: Paternal grandfather had Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma 2 years ago. No significant past medical history.<br><br>Action: Fertility consultations to investigate egg freezing. <br>Have port placed followed by ABVD Chemotherapy once every other week for 6 months. Continuing working as long as my health isn't jeopardized. <br><br>Recommendation: Let's Beat This!
