<div>My name is Edidiong, and I am a nurse working for Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Trust. I have always been passionate about helping children and families in need, particularly those who cannot afford the medical care they desperately require.

<div>This passion has inspired me to take on an incredible challenge: my first-ever 5K run on 7th December 2024 alongside '<a href="https://www.sheffieldmind.co.uk/mental-elf-run#:~:text=Join%2525252520us%2525252520for%2525252520the%2525252520Mental,a%2525252520festive%2525252520fun%2525252520filled%2525252520morning." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mental Elf Fun Run South Yorkshire 2024</a> ', followed by two 5K runs in January and February 2025, and then—because apparently three 5Ks weren’t enough—I’m going to attempt a 10K run in March 2025. Yes, you read that right—a 10K!  For someone who previously thought running was only necessary when being chased, this is a big leap. But it’s all for a cause close to my heart: raising £3,000 to £5,000 to support children at the General Hospital in Ikot Ekpene, Nigeria, who are unable to pay for essential medical treatment.

<div><strong>Why This Cause Matters to Me:</strong>
</div>
<div>This mission is deeply personal to me because I am originally from Ikot Ekpene, a small but vibrant community in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Known as the “<em>Raffia City</em>” for its rich cultural heritage in raffia weaving and crafts, Ikot Ekpene is a town with immense potential. However, like many rural areas in Nigeria, it struggles with poverty, limited access to healthcare, and a fragile local economy heavily reliant on agriculture and small-scale trade.

<div>For many families in Ikot Ekpene, daily life is a constant challenge. Parents often work tirelessly to provide for their children, but with low wages and high unemployment rates, medical emergencies become insurmountable financial burdens. A <a href="https://www.unicef.org/nigeria/media/5851/file/Multidimensional%252520Child%252520Poverty%252520in%252520Nigeria%252520Report%252520.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recent report</a> by UNICEF highlights that over 55% of Nigerian children live in multidimensional poverty, lacking access to healthcare, education, and clean water. This reality is even more pronounced in rural areas like Ikot Ekpene, where healthcare facilities are often underfunded and overcrowded.

<div>During my father’s final days in the hospital, I witnessed firsthand the immense struggles of families in my hometown. While my family was fortunate to afford his treatment, I saw parents selling their last belongings—farmland, tools, or even homes—to try and pay for their children’s medical care. Despite these efforts, many children went without treatment. I vividly recall seeing children in need of oxygen left untreated because their parents could not pay for it, leading to preventable deaths.

<div>This is the heartbreaking reality for many families in Ikot Ekpene. The General Hospital, which has served the community for over a century, remains a critical lifeline but is overwhelmed by demand and constrained by limited resources. Without intervention, these families face impossible choices that no parent should have to make.

<div>This fundraiser is my way of giving back to the community that raised me. It’s a way to honour my father’s memory and to ensure that no child is left to suffer because their family cannot afford basic medical care. Together, we can provide hope and healing to these children, easing their parents’ burdens and giving them a chance to grow, learn, and thrive.

Run to Heal: Help me pay medical bills for 50-100 kids.

Educational inequalities can define and shape someone's entire life, from having access to important books that help us to understand our place in the world from systemic barriers to our attainment. <br /><br />As a child, I would frequent my local library and get lost in some beautiful texts for days at a time. I know that without this, my future would have looked very different. However, with so many libraries closing around the UK - almost 130 reported in 2018 - access to books can become increasingly difficult. <br /><br />During this pandemic book sales have skyrocketed. According to the BBC sales of fiction rose by a third, while children's education went up 234% to the third-highest level on record. Many people have been in fortunate positions to buy books that they'd love to read. <br /><br />But due to barriers such as economic and societal, not everyone will have the chance to explore the texts that they're interested in. Movements across the world calling for racial equality have resurged discussions on how the stories, histories and experiences of people of colour have been written out of our national narrative through our education system. <br /><br />For years authors of colour have been writing extremely important texts that bring light to our 'hidden' histories and experiences. However, the education system continually fails to recognise the importance of these books and by extension, our voices. <br /><br />No one should be denied the opportunity to increase their education and learning due to financial restrictions. Therefore, I am fundraising to buy books that explore the experiences, stories and histories of people of colour for those who cannot afford to purchase them, or those who have difficulties reading books online due to disabilities. <br /><br />The idea for this came off the back of work with publisher Verso books, who I worked with to give away physical copies of books from their 'Abolition and Black Struggle' reading list. Kind donors began to come forward to donate books or the costs to purchase more, so I hope that through this fundraiser we can get even more vital books out to people across the UK. <br /><br />All money raised will go towards purchasing the books and sending these to the recipients. <br /><br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">How will it work?<br /><br /></span>During and after the period of fundraising, we will be asking people to contact us (there is a button to contact at the bottom of the page) if they would like a book that they otherwise cannot access. The books will then be purchased online and sent directly to their houses - this data will not be shared with anyone.<br /><br />This will be a process based on trust and community spirit in the hopes that no one will claim a book if they are in a position to purchase themselves or do not have accessibility issues. We, therefore, won't be asking anyone to explain their circumstances or prove them as this would unnecessarily traumatic and uncomfortable for people. <br /><br />We will ask that everyone who comes forward either sends some suggestions of a book that they'd like to read or we'd be happy to recommend some texts based off of our <a href="https://www.instagram.com/stories/highlights/17863012210978346/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">curated reading lists</a> , put together by authors, educators, bloggers and activists. <br /><br />If donors also have suggestions, we'd be happy to add them, as long as they do not promote any racist, right-winged, ableist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, or any other bigoted views.<br /><br />Transparency - this fundraiser will be continuously updated to show how the money has been spent.<br /><br />Thank you to everyone who has made it this far down the fundraiser, any amount at all that you can offer would be greatly appreciated!
