Help a family in Gaza rebuild

<div>Darren Thornhill is a Reentry Outreach Worker at the Texas Harm Reduction Alliance where he connects with currently incarcerated individuals and people leaving jail and prison to offer peer support and harm reduction education, including overdose prevention and response. Darren helps saves lives every week.

<div>On Thursday, August 22nd, Darren was getting his car fixed at the AutoZone on Riverside. He was charging his phone inside when the manager on duty came over and told him, "We don't let homeless people charge their phones here." Darren explained he was a paying customer and they went back and forth. The manager picked up the phone and called the police and lied to them, telling 911 that Darren had a gun.

<div>Two police officers responded to the call, and one of them said clearly on the body cam that he didn't believe the manager and she only mentioned a gun in order to get them to respond to the call. That police officer did not think Darren needed to be arrested. However, the other officer decided not to believe Darren or the mechanic who provided witness testimony backing Darren's story up. That officer threw Darren to the ground and pulled a gun on him. The asphalt was burning Darren's stomach but he knew he couldn't move or he might be shot.

<div>Darren was booked into jail and denied a PR bond. Travis County Pre-Trial Services denied him bond because of a parole violation from 2017. Travis County does not provide representation at magistration, so Darren did not have an attorney to argue his case. The judge even said, "I don't understand why you are standing in front of me" but all he could do was reduce the bond to $1500. Darren was needlessly incarcerated for two days!!

<div>Help us support Darren with funds for the bond he never should have had to pay, and for having to get his car towed from AutoZone. This arrest was unfounded and discriminatory, and the system revealed how problematic it is at every stage! Please support Darren so this experience doesn't also put him in serious debt!

<div>I am Arielle, an American living in Egypt. I have recently joined a grassroots effort to help the Palestinian families arriving in Egypt from Gaza. The group is organized by myself and 3 other passionate civilians, including a Palestinian - Egyptian woman living here, who has received a list of families in need who arrived from Gaza from the Palestinian embassy and we continue to receive contacts via other verified sources.

<div>These are people with restricted movement allowed, no ability to return home, no allowance to work, and many have zero access to official financial support by the embassy. We have divided up the families into categories of vulnerability with priority given to the most dire cases.

<div>Nearly every day more Palestinian families from Gaza are evacuating into Egypt. Most of these families have a great medical need, such as a member having cancer or critical injuries. Some are lucky to be able to leave by holding dual citizenship. Since most of our community has young families, we have decided to focus on helping the families with young children.

<div><strong>Why donate to this grassroots group vs an international organization?</strong>
</div>
<div>When you donate to large organizations, oftentimes your money is used to buy goods which then can sit in warehouses for weeks or months. There is a long delay between your donation and your contribution going to those in need. Large aid organizations excel at providing long term help, but they tend to need more time to organize, and they tend to provide help by providing services such as food distribution, housing in large shelters, medical aid, schooling, etc.

<div>These families arrived from Gaza with literally the clothes on their backs and nothing more. Once they arrive in Egypt, they have an immediate need in housing, food, water, medicine, winter clothing, housewares such as cooking supplies, mattresses, blankets, and more.

<div>Giving cash directly to people in need of humanitarian aid empowers them to determine and meet their most pressing needs, boosting the effectiveness of your donation. When people receive cash assistance, they are completely free to establish their own priorities. Not only choosing if they want to buy food, water or go to the hospital but also deciding what kind of food they are buying for example.

<div>Hi. My name is Bronnie (He/Him). I came out as trans, for the second time, in February of 2023. I’ve known I was a transgender male since I was 17, but was never supported in my journey to pursue my truth until this year.

<div>I am finally in a position where I am able to start the process of getting top surgery as a very necessary healthcare procedure for my transition. My surgery date is in January and I am looking to raise money to ensure I am able to afford all the fees and recovery period post-operation.

<div>I am very privileged to have insurance that allows me to have most of my surgery covered, but there are other fees and bills that are not covered. As someone who is completely financially independent from family, I am unable to afford these payments and am seeking assistance.
