<div>4/8/1988 - I moved from Akron, Ohio, my birthplace, to Raleigh, North Carolina. I was 37 years old, newly married, and starting a new life. My best friend and former workmate, Larry Guest (RIP), had moved here previously and spoke highly of it. I had vacationed on the Outer Banks with my family for many years at Nags Head and Emerald Isle on the Outer Banks of NC.

<div>4/8/2025 - 37 years later, my house of almost 26 years started on fire around 9:30 AM. I was awake and watching TV in my living room when I heard a “POP!” followed by what sounded like a sheet pan falling on the floor. I thought my cat, Peepers, had knocked something off the counter in the kitchen. Not normal, but it made me curious. So I got up to investigate in the kitchen. I have limited mobility. I use a cane for balance issues, so it takes me a few minutes to get up and get moving.

<div>I went into the kitchen and everything looked normal, but I smelled smoke. So I proceeded down the hallway to the base of the stairs going to the second floor. At the base of the stairs, I found the remains of a large fish mobile that I had made and had been hanging from the ceiling in the stairwell. I looked up the stairs and saw smoke rolling across the ceiling. I immediately headed back to the living room where I stopped to call 911. The front doorbell started ringing repeatedly. I went to answer it and found my neighbor, Mary, from across the street, who I was just meeting.

<div>Being a private person and a bit of a recluse, I hadn’t met her yet. She said, “Your house is on fire! You’ve got to get out of there! Come with me!” And she pulled me out of my house in only my boxer briefs, with holes in the back, and one sock, and helped me down the nearby neighbor’s driveway to the fire marshal’s truck parked in the center of the street.

<div>My house is maybe a mile from Sanford Fire Station One, so Sanford’s finest firefighters were already on the scene when I left my house. Two fire trucks were present with the police department. Kudos to the firefighters who quickly extinguished the fire. Kudos to my other neighbor who called 911 and reported the fire. Kudos to Arnold, another neighbor who gave bottles of water to the firemen. Several service people came to ask if I was okay and if there was anyone else in my house. I told them about Peepers, who was probably hiding in the house somewhere. Mary went and got a quilt to wrap me in. Later, she took me into her house, where it was warmer.

<div>The fire was limited to the second floor and attic, but there was water and smoke damage throughout. The fire burned several holes in the roof, some of which were made larger by the firemen fighting the fire.

<div>Two days after the fire, my house was inspected by an “adjuster” sent by my insurance company. I’ve been a resident of my house since June of 1999, which is located in the Rosemount/McIvers historical district on the corner of North Gulf Street (500 North Gulf Street) and Bracken Street. I’ve paid, by escrow, for house insurance yearly/religiously(!) to Universal Property and Casualty currently.

<div>The “adjuster” inspected my house and the fire damage, took many pictures, and surprised me by presenting me with a $1k and a $2k check to help me with the expenses I would be incurring by living and eating elsewhere from my house. This was a preliminary benefit of my insurance policy of $36k for “loss of use.” It wasn’t a “gift,” it was part of the settlement I will eventually receive, I hope(!)

<div>I tried making a mobile deposit of those checks to my Chime internet bank a few days later. I chose to use an “internet bank” instead of a “traditional brick and mortar” bank a year or so ago because I’m retired. My only source of income is Social Security retirement.

Help Mr. Morgan in Finding Safe Shelter Post-Fire

<div>My name is Wendi and <strong>I am raising funds so my half-brother Keven and I can be with our mother for her last days.</strong> She is 85 years old, has advanced Alzheimer's and recently took a bad fall, and is now in hospice. She has not eaten food for several days, and as of two days ago is no longer taking fluids. Her time will be soon, and she is resting easily as the hospice staff are taking care of her comfort.

Help David Mitchell Punch Cancer in the Face!

<div>Hey there! My name is Cade, short for Cadence. I'm a 22 year old dude from the DMV. I like to collect obscure movies, music, and video games. I love comics. I've been reading Jack Kirby's original New Gods run lately. I'm a pet person. I have a little black cat named Marceline who I treat like my daughter. I also have an elderly bulldog named Buster, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. We're doing all that we can for him, we have him on medication and he's doing better these days. But emergencies like that have kept my family a bit tighter than usual. Despite this, I'd say that I'm lucky and loved and I'm happy to be where I am. But despite the support from all of my friends, family, and loved ones, I am absolutely terrified. That's because I'm a transgender person. If you're curious, I am a trans man, meaning I am transitioning from female to male and I use He/Him pronouns. And I'm sure that more than half of the people who saw this clicked away after they read that. In part I assume that's because our current president, as well as conservative talking points on a larger scale, have politicized my existence. It's gotten to the point where they're trying to <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/nbc-out/out-politics-and-policy/speaker-mike-johnson-maintains-house-transgender-bathroom-ban-rcna186669" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ban trans people from federal restrooms</a> , and <a href="https://www.npr.org/2025/01/29/nx-s1-5279092/trump-executive-order-gender-affirming-care" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">restrict gender affirming care on a large scale</a>  for anyone under the age of 19. Not 18, 19. Barring legal adults from being able to do what they please with their own bodies. I don't work in the chambers of congress. I'm older than 19 years old. Neither of these pieces of legislation should effect me. But I'm not stupid. Neither am I willfully ignorant. I came out as trans when I was 16 years old. Due to how inaccessible gender affirming care was even prior to the current political climate, as well as the shutdowns that occurred during the pandemic, I was not able to receive hormone replacement therapy until I was 20 years old. I realized that if I wanted to live to my fullest potential, I need to act as swiftly as possible. Before I run out of time. My insurance will cover a majority of the costs to remove the breast tissue that's developed on my chest, but there's a small amount of that breast tissue under my arms. According to my surgeon, that underarm tissue is medically considered a different part of the body from my chest and the procedure to remove it cannot be covered by insurance. So I'm asking for just the $3,000 it would take to cover the out of pocket costs. Thank you all so much for hearing about me and my journey. My sister needs your help

<div>It’s hard to ask for help even when we need it most. Last Friday Boo suffered from a tear in his left eye that has resulted in obstructed vision which has only gotten worse. He needs surgery to fix the tear and be able to see again. His eyes are necessary for the work that he does and has had to turn down over a weeks worth of work already. Not sure how much more work he will have to miss but it’s looking like possibly two more weeks. The copay for his surgery and the medical bills from all the office visits are starting to pile up so we humbly ask you for any amount if you can spare. <div>On September 1, Kristin woke to unexpected pain which began a 3-week ordeal of tests, appointments, imaging and questions, culminating in a diagnosis of Metastatic high-grade serous carcinoma of the ovary, the most aggressive ovarian cancer. She has fluid accumulating in her lungs and in her abdomen.

<div>The family is still waiting for an oncologist and a treatment plan amidst BC’s backed up medical system. The primary tumor likely requires exploratory surgery; the wait times are alarming. Doctors braced the family they’re in for a 3-4 month wait for the necessary surgery and at least 6 weeks  before chemotherapy can start.
</div>

<div>This delay, coupled with the potential that BC Cancer will deny her treatment due to the stage and progression, poses a severe threat to Kristin’s life, forcing her to consider out-of-country, out-of-pocket treatment options, though she is unable to fly due to fluid in her lungs. She is actively working with a naturopath out of pocket to fortify her immune system and buy time.

<div>Kristin and Donovan are both self-employed business owners in the community. As such, they do not have access to EI, disability insurance or other public benefits. The cancer has rapidly robbed her of energy and she has lost her income due to her inability to work with clients.

<div>I have struggled with my period and my uterus for decades. I’m sure that many of you have heard me respond to “How ya doing?” with “My uterus is trying to kill me this week.” And it wouldn’t be short of the truth.

<div>Over the last five years my health has taken a serious turn with regular visits to the ER. I was told initially that I had a horrendous case of fibroids during one emergency room visit and that my only solution was a hysterectomy. I didn’t want that. I was committed to trying to find another way, another procedure, another answer.

</div>
<div>And I tried. All the alternative methods I could get my hands on, coupled with acupuncture, yoga, and meditation. I found a doctor but the procedures that I had done extensive research on were all considered elective. With no forms of credit and no real savings, spending $50k on these procedures was just, well, out of reach. So I just continued on in pain. The emergency room visits got more and more frequent. My pain got more and more severe. I couldn’t walk and trying to work was near impossible with the amount of painkillers I was taking every day.

<div>Finally in October of 2023 I found a doctor group that took me on as a patient and wanted to finally get to the bottom of what was going on with me as they said what I was experiencing was “very much not normal.” After a barrage of tests, blood transfusions, and surgical procedures that were supposed to improve my quality of life and make my periods get better... they haven’t. In fact they got worse. I’ve been to the emergency room every month since December.
</div>

<div>So the last step of this journey is finally here. I am scheduled for a laparoscopic (ROBOTS AND LASERS YES!) subtotal hysterectomy on March 8th. After countless meetings with my doctor and my care team at the hospital this is truly the best thing for me.

<div>This fund is covering what I believe is my portion for the surgery (good god please don’t let it be more) and for my recovery. This includes physical after care, and compensation and expenses for my care team.

Amber's Hysterectomy Care Fund

Last month I did a huge upgrade and had my transmission dropped and the rear seals all replaced. That drained all savings I had. And now? Well apparently my engine needs some real attention. I have a blown valve cover, several seals and gaskets in my engine that need replacement, and issues with my suspension that make the car unable to drive for the moment.

In his many years as a bartender in DC, Arnold always looked out for vulnerable patrons and was the first to step in if anyone needed assistance. Maybe he walked you home one night, or kept a creepy guy from bothering you, or stood up when someone said some shitty thing to you in his presence. If it wasn't you, odds are, he did it for someone you know.

Arnold's Amazaballs Recovery

<div>Thomas Worden Kivowitz, was born on December 21. 1976, and passed away this week. We lost him this week to a disease he tried to fight for a very long time. He leaves behind a family who will always miss who we knew he used to be and who he should have been. We always hoped he would find his way back home, and rid himself of the demons which plagued him, but he just didn't. He will be missed by his sisters Mandy and Elizabeth, his mother Sally, his ex wife Mariana and his two sons. We hope he is at peace now and in the arms of a loving G-d who can heal the parts of him that we never could.

The GREAT NEWS is that she is home where she can rest and continue to heal in comfort and with her beloved, David. The bad news is that at this time, she needs someone with her at all times as she remains frail and needs assistance with tasks. David is holding down the fort the best he can, but he needs to work to pay bills and have insurance. Friends are filling in where we can, but due to life and other commitments, we are running into times when we don't have someone to stay with her. <div>We all know Bill White as the beloved long-time owner of <a href="https://www.yelp.com/biz/fish-in-the-neighborhood-washington-3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fish in the Hood</a>  located in Park View  off Georgia Ave. Bill always has a smile, joke and kind word for whomever is lucky enough to come by his seafood take-out restaurant that has become a landmark institution in the neighborhood for over 20 years. The community rallied around him as he struggled to reopen after the <a href="https://www.petworthnews.org/blog/fish-reopens" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">April 2017 fire</a>  and throughout the pandemic.

Fish in the Hood's Bill White is in Hospital

<p>As many have heard, yesterday my mother’s home that she shared with my 91 year old grandfather caught fire last night and was deemed condemned. The house has been in our family for nearly 60 years. Three generations and countless others have resided in the house over that time. It was recently renovating to accommodate my aging grandfather's needs and wishes to remain in our family home. <br /><br />Our family home caught fire last night during a family gathering. Thankfully, everyone was able to get out safely. We are extremely grateful that everyone is in good health. However, the fire has led to the displacement of my mother and grandfather. They lost nearly all of their possessions many of which were essential items and items of sentimental value that, unfortunately, cannot be replaced. As my family and I look to support my mom and grandfather as they adjust, I am asking for donations to cover some of their immediate and long term needs.
</p>

Fire Relief Assistance for Bigelow Family

<p><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/59331807_1629317600260860_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="59331807_1629317600260860_r.jpeg" /><br />Mid morning on the first day of a five-day backpacking trip near the Rawa trail in the Rawah Wilderness area within Larimer County in Fort Collins, Colorado, I had a terrible accident and suffered a fall. The rocky terrain caused a hard landing on rocks where I first fell on my back and bounced onto a small creek landing on my side. My crew rushed to my side and helped to relocate me away from the water because I was at risk of hypothermia. Because of the double impact I was experiencing excruciating pain. They quickly mobilized to get help while staying close and helping me through this ordeal. It took the first helicopter over four hours to reach a spot near our coordinates on the mountain trail. A team of rescuers were dropped off and they hiked over to my location where I remained still unable to move my body given the pain. Once the rescue team showed up they carefully assessed my injuries. They quickly worked to stabilize my spine before getting me onto a stretcher and determined that I needed to be airlifted out of the mountain via a rescue helicopter, a military unit-type that could handle the mission. Although the rescuers considered hiking me down, given my injuries that was not feasible. We waited for a military helicopter to reach us and get me to a facility where I was transferred to a medical helicopter. This final ride delivered me to the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, Colorado. The Emergency Personnel assessed the trauma and by late afternoon I had been seen by over 10 medical providers and had undergone a series of tests, including a CT Scan and X-rays. Tests revealed a broken rib on my right side and showed that I had sustained fractures on three transverse lumbar processes.
</p>

<p>I am totally grateful for having been within access of care, despite the utterly painful 4-hour wait. Deeply grateful as well for the support of close friends who have been by my side since the fall, during the gruelling hours of helicopter rides and hospital stays, and everything that followed. As I am now facing a long recovery, the reality of medical bills is before me and I humbly and respectfully lean on my community to help me address these costs. We all have a health care story and know how devastating medical debt can be for individuals and families. As an immigrant and woman of color, I believe we heal in community and as I navigate all this, I am reminded that we do this together. We endure pain together. We heal together.

Relief for Emergency Medical Expenses

Shinobi(Edward White) has been having extensive dental issues for a few years now. Years of seasonal work for Burning Man hasn't afforded Shinobi the ability to have this taken care of, as full dental reconstruction is expensive and requires multiple extensive appointments.  We have looked into the costs of travel and reconstruction, and 20k should get Shinobi to a place where he can smile again with confidence, instead of judgement or concern. We all know the importance of being able to share our smiles, so help from the community would go far especially during these years without the events we love so much. <br /><br />Every bit helps! <p>Scot and Maggie King are both talented artists (Scot with leather, Maggie with pottery), they've helped countless people to explore their passions and have been supporting small craftsmen all over Europe bringing their craft to the states. Scot's good humor and storytelling have lit up many a campfire, and his love of history has been shared with more than we can count. <br /><br />On June 26, Scot was bit by a copperhead snake and went to the ER. Antivenom was administered, and while he's doing better right now, not everything is covered by insurance. They are seeking financial aid from the hospital but the bills are piling up, and he will be incapacitated for the bulkk of their high season for events and shows. For a pair of artists, this could be a devastating situation. One that could potentially prevent them from continuing to share the art and culture that they both love. <br /><br />Almost immediately, friends from all over reached out and wanted to help, a testament to how well-loved they are. To how much we would lose without their presence in the historical arts community. <br /><br />The amount being asked for is the initial estimate of just the antivenom, plus enough to cover processing and a bit more, and it may change. Anything over the amount requested will be sent to Scot and Maggie to help them get back on their feet.

<p>On February 25th, my mother Karen experienced a severe life-changing stroke that has left one side of her body paralyzed. After major brain surgery and a month of recovery at Johns Hopkins, my mother has been transferred to Kernan to complete her rehabilitation. Her spirits are high and she is determined to regain strength! <br /><br />On top of her medical bills, she will be in need of household modifications such as chair lifts and an electric wheel chair. As most of you know, my mother lives to bring smiles and lend a helping hand when ever she can. Now it's our turn to help her!
