<div><strong>When life throws you a curve ball, you get help from your friends. This year has thrown Andrea and Leslie two massive curve balls. These two pillars of our community are both facing life-altering health issues. </strong>

<div><strong>In April, Leslie was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer </strong>and has been undergoing treatment in Marin. She has four months of chemo/immunotherapy… and with that A LOT of medical bills.

<div><strong>In May, Andrea started experiencing neurological disorder symptoms that are either dystonia or ALS. </strong>Turns out her grandfather had a motor neuron disease so ALS is likely. Her symptoms include some slow speech, a weak/wobbly right leg, drop-foot and right arm weakness. Because of this, a cane and walker have become necessary and her medical bills are likely to increase.

<div>Leslie’s smiling face when you walk into Mollie Stones grocery store, is one of the things that make us feel like we are experiencing the best aspects of a small town living. Her disposition, open nature and loving personality are a priceless combination. Everyone that meets her, loves her immediately.

<div>Andrea is force to be reckoned with and has many feathers in her cap: motivating folks at a fitness class, inspiring entrepreneurial women at the Marin based women's networking group she founded in 2010 (NEWofMarin), helping people get over the fear of speaking in public, and her main passion, film production — where she has worked as a Script Supervisor and Director for the past 28 years. And she is also an author!

<div>However, with these crippling health impacts, both of them have had to dramatically cut back — or in Andrea‘s case, stop work completely.

<div>Hi, I'm Michele Dennis, a longtime friend and colleague of Andrea Devaux, who is now in her second year of a crippling ALS diagnosos. Her daughter and granddaughter are still with her, but it is not enough. Her daughter, Kat can not handle the long nights helping her Mom by herself any longer. Kat needs to hire a night time caretaker. This will be a large expense. On top of that Andrea's device that she uses to communicate just had to be replaced, and it has taken critical funds from her caretaking monies to do that. The Devaux family needs help. <div>Andrea, as anyone who knows her would tell you, could be/was  characterized as one of most vivacious women on the planet. She is now is completely paralyzed from ALS and can not feed herself, or speak any longer. She can only eat liquified food which has to be hand fed to her with a turkey baster. She can not even suck food through a straw. Her feeding has to be done very slowly. She has had a succession of caregivers, and has a part time one now. But they need more help.
</div>
<div>Her daughter Kat and 4 year old granddaughter, Nova live with her full time. Kat does all of her personal care. However, the task of feeding is nearly full time, and Kat can not keep up with it.
</div>
<div>Please consider helping as much as you can. And if you are comfortable helping her with basic needs, consider signing up on her calendar to help feed her and or other tasks. Insurance does not cover this sort of help. With all of this, Andrea can really use your help to help pay for extra caretaking, rents and van services going forward. And to support and allow her to help pay her daughter a stipend so she can afford to look after Andrea full-time.

<div>Many of us know Andrea for her almost 3 decades working in the film industry as a Script Supervisor and/or Director; as an amazing public speaking coach and author; as the President and Cofounder of a woman’s business networking group (NEWofMarin); and for 25 years as a part time fitness instructor (teaching 5 different formats at various Bay Area gyms). In all those capacities she is known for her wit, intuition, humor, intelligence, and teamwork. She has always looked out for her fellow crew members, creating community wherever she goes. She is wonderfully generous with her time and energy. But most importantly, she is a good friend.

<div>Andrea is currently in the fight of her life.

<div>Since May 2024, Andrea has been experiencing symptoms synonymous with ALS, a fatal motor neuron disease. It causes progressive degeneration of nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain, it affects voluntary control of arms and legs, ultimately leading to the inability to swallow and breathe.
</div>

<div>Her ALS diagnosis was confirmed later in 2024.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>In just a few short months, Andrea has lost her ability to be flexible and strong. Her speech pattern is now slow and deliberate, her every move now calculated due to her wobbly leg, drop foot and weak arm. She can no longer drive and now walks with a cane.
</div>

<div>In this condition she can no longer work. But for those of us who know her well, she is still a fighter! And her sense of humor, and upbeat positivity still shines through.
</div>

</div>
<div>Due to these unforeseen health issues, she can use all the help she can get right now — both to cover current expenses — and to hopefully fund stem cell treatments that have proven helpful to ALS patients participating in recent research studies (not currently FDA approved).

PLEASE HELP Andrea Devaux

<div>Family and friends are posting this fundraiser on behalf <strong>Chris Burns</strong>. Chris was on a production in the Bay Area when he began having severe symptoms and was rushed to Stanford Hospital. He was diagnosed with fourth stage Hepatic Liver Cirrhosis. This affects almost all of his body's systems. It causes a low platelet count which prevents his blood from clotting. Because of the low platelets, he is not a candidate for surgery for the gallstones which he has just developed or any other surgery. Portal hypertension and water retention are among many additional hazards.

<div>The only way Chris can return to a normal way of life is a liver transplant. Without it the disease is incurable. He is an excellent candidate because of his age, prior good health, and stable family situation. BUT there is a waiting list of at least 6 months or more. Transplant and recovery will have to be done in Salt Lake City, It could also bring new, unforeseen medical complications. At the moment he has a team of doctors who are trying to stabilize him so that when he is eligible for a transplant he will be a good surgical candidate.

<div>Chris's condition makes him unable to work for the foreseeable future. Our family has already spent weeks in Boise and chipped in money to help hold things together. To see him suffer as a result of this devastating and life-threatening illness is heartbreaking beyond words. So, we are reaching out on his behalf for support. Any amount, no matter how small will make a difference. Chris has a lot of friends, and so does the Burns/Wonacott family. We are confident that many people will welcome the chance to help and that our campaign will make a real difference in heading off a financial crisis on top of the medical one.

<div>My son Eli Bodhi Remus died on December 12, 2021. It was very sudden. He died of necrotizing fasciitis and despite the best antibiotics on the planet and multiple surgeries he did not make it. It happened so quickly.

<div>I am in deep grief and shock. This was entirely unexpected.  Yet it was sacred. I helped Eli come into this world and I helped him leave this world. I was there for his first breath and his last heartbeat, and even though it is not something a parent wants to have to do, I can feel the Great Mystery in this.

</div>
<div>I would like to take some time off work to process all that has happened. I do not have sick leave or paid vacation.  I can’t imagine working right now. I also need to help pay for Eli’s cremation and all the other expenses that go along with someone’s death. 
</div>

Funeral and loss recovery support

<p>Owner Jan Rosen, founder and world renowned creator of J M Rosen’s Cheesecake and Chef at 256 North in Petaluma is in desperate need of help. Unfortunately Jan has not received any stimulus funds and the recent COVID induced restaurant shut-down and is going to force her to close her business.  We need to help Jan save her restaurant that she has worked so <br />hard to build over the years. Jan is a wonderful, caring, hard-working person and she has a strong desire to make sure her employees are also taken care of. Jan is the first to give in need if you are hungry or need a meal. Currently there are 24 staff members who are dependent on this fabulous restaurant making it through the pandemic. Save 256 North in Petaluma

Many of you know that Dr. Gerry was diagnosed with 3 deadly cancers over eight years ago.  Despite his health challenges, he continued his practice and faithfully served all under his care.  His skills as a diagnostician, holistic healer, spiritual advisor, and nutritional specialist were unmatched.   In the end, Gerry succumbed to the crippling effects of the cancer treatment after refusing any more medical intervention last September.  He died at home, July 25th, 2019. He was blissful and finally at peace.<br /><br />His most cherished wish was to raise money to support Advaita Ashrama, Mayaviti and to return to India on a regular basis.  This unique monastary was painstakingly built in 1899 by an English couple, Captain James Henry Sevier and Charlotte Servier who were two of the first Western  disciples of Swami Vivekananda. Not only actors with disabilities, but we needed to expand, be open to all actors and performers.<br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://2dbdd5116ffa30a49aa8-c03f075f8191fb4e60e74b907071aee8.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/10899707_1468132946.1086_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br /><br />This new workshop became known as ‘Meet the Biz’ embracing a diversity that we called family.  <br /><br />Actors with and without disabilities; Blind, Deaf, hard of hearing, Wheel-Chair Users, Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome, Autism, White, Black, Gay, Straight, and the list goes on.  <br /><br />I wanted to bring together everyone to learn from one another, to celebrate our differences and to recognize our sameness. I wanted to train artists to be the best in their game so that they can work in the world of stage, television and film.<br /><br />I also wanted to invite industry and celebrity guests to share their experience in the Entertainment Business. Whether it be Acting, Dancing, Singing, Writing, Directing, Producing, Casting, or being an agent or manager. Our classes presented a well-rounded vision of the workings of a business, and through team work and creative influence, how the “magic” happened or didn’t happen.<br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://2dbdd5116ffa30a49aa8-c03f075f8191fb4e60e74b907071aee8.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/10899707_1468132216.3652_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br /><br />As time went on, I realized that those teachers, the industry guests, learned just as much, if not more, during their time with our group of Inclusion.  As a result of the connections made, there has been advances in getting diversity on the stage and the screen.<br /><br />The classes have been very low priced, pay what you can, and many have been free. For over 10 years we have received grants and donations from the incredible Friends of Californians with Disabilities, Inc. to keep our program running.   Throughout the years we received other grants through from the Christopher &amp; Dana Reeve Foundation for a program with Actors For Autism, Michele Spitz: Woman of Her Word, and also some private donations.   We have been putting off using Crowdfunding, but we are now in need of it to keep our program going.  <br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://2dbdd5116ffa30a49aa8-c03f075f8191fb4e60e74b907071aee8.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/10899707_1468132503.8384_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br />Several years ago, the Media Access Office after 30 years of service, was closed down by the State of California due to funding. However I did not want our cherished workshops to be closed down as well.  I felt the importance of keeping 'Meet the Biz' as an integral part of the business. <br /><br />Not only did we have the workshops, but also it served as a bridge in a varied amount of venues; working closely with many organizations - including the Screen Actors Guild/AFTRA, The Writers Guild, Actors For Autism, Performing Arts Studio West, Inclusion Films, the Los Angeles LGBT Village at the Ed Gould Plaza, the McCadden Theater, and Evolution Dance Studio, to name a few.<br /><br /> <br />A few years back, our dear friend, Actor/Producer, Danny Woodburn was teaching improv.  The door opened, and a new student entered. As I was sitting in the corner of the room, observing, I noticed this student’s mouth drop open by the obvious diversity in the room.  <br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://2dbdd5116ffa30a49aa8-c03f075f8191fb4e60e74b907071aee8.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/10899707_1468130883.8456_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br />Danny was in front of the group speaking, and next to him were two girls who happened to be wheelchair users, next to them was an actress who had Down syndrome talking to a blind man, and there were also two students signing to one another.<br /><br />You could tell by his demeanor, that this new student was a little taken aback, but as I watched the magic of that evening unfold, I also noticed the change in that new student.   By the end of the 3 hour workshop, he was laughing and thoroughly enjoying being a part of this amazing group of people.  That student has become a part of the group and has continued taking classes to this day!<br /><br /><br />My intention has always been to bridge the gap between ability and disability by embracing diversity, breaking down social barriers and opening the once locked doors of opportunity.
