<div>March 3-7th is Read Across America Week and our students are participating in our annual Read-a-Thon fundraiser! This is a time for our students to get in a little extra reading, raise some funds for the school and have a LOT of fun doing it!

<div>Our amazing school has some goals set for this fundraiser! Some of the funds that we raise from our Read-a-Thon will go toward transportation for our whole school field trip in April. We are hoping that there will be enough to give the students some money for new playground toys and equipment that they have requested. Anything left over will go toward the fun activities that teachers have planned for the end of the school year. Our students and staff work very hard all year. Knowing that our community supports them would mean more than you know!

As a valued supporter of our animal shelter, you have played a crucial role in our mission to provide a safe haven for countless abandoned, neglected, and abused animals. It is because of your generosity and compassion that we have been able to continue our work for over two decades, and make a difference in the lives of so many animals in need.

<div>However, I must share some troubling news with you. Our shelter is currently facing an unprecedented financial crisis. The recent increase in costs for essential supplies, medical treatments, and facility maintenance, combined with a significant decrease in donations, have severely impacted our funding sources. Additionally, the broader economic challenges have placed a strain on many of our supporters, making it more difficult for them to contribute as much as they have in the past. We are now in danger of closing our doors for good. Without immediate financial support, we will no longer be able to provide the essential care and services that our animals depend on. As a no kill animal shelter, we receive zero government funding and rely solely on the generosity of our community and the dedication of our volunteers and supporters.

<div>Our shelter has always been a place of hope and healing. We have rescued animals from dire situations, provided them with medical care, and found them loving forever homes. Each animal that comes through our doors has a unique story, and it is our mission to ensure that their stories have happy endings. The thought of having to turn away animals in need because we lack the resources to care for them is heartbreaking.

<div>That's what we see every day.  Dogs and cats who have lost their way.  Some have even been left to fend for themselves.  Sometimes, they can't even open their eyes, much less find food, water and shelter for themselves.

<div>We take them in, treat their wounds, free them of parasites.  We get them the veterinary care they need.  We keep them safe and comfortable.  We play.  We heal their hearts.

<div>Whenever possible, we reunite them with their people.  Seeing a dog wiggle with joy when he hears his person's voice brings immeasurable joy.

<div>Saying "farewell" to a dog or cat being adopted by a loving family is a win for everyone, a cause for celebration.

<div>Since our founding in 1885, Leavenworth County Humane Society has been caring for dogs and cats who are lost, abandoned, neglected, abused or unwanted.  Sometimes in foster homes, sometimes in a shelter.  For nearly all these past 140 years, Leavenworth County Humane Society has been caring and delivering on our promise.

<div>It's hard, dirty, exhausting work, not for the faint of heart.  Our staff is small but devoted.  We rely a lot on volunteers, too.  Three shifts a day, every single day.

<div>Our leadership is energized and innovative.  Our Fundraising Committee is on fire!  We're launching a new program for area businesses to make them partners in the life-saving, too.
