<div>Mom and Dad were the ultimate pair! Well, at least in their children's eyes. However, many who'd come to know them would agree. It was clear that Sound and Ham Chan lived a life of excellence and great kindness through Christ's strength and grace. At God's appointed time:

<div>Sadly, Mom went home to be with our Lord, on April 10, 2023, on a Monday, leaving him with such sadness and sorrow for they were married for 58 years in May of 2023!

<div>Otherwise, in good physical health, he lived through what could be described as stage 6 Dementia. Days leading up to his homegoing, Dad asked countless times to “go home…” 

</div>

<div>On Monday, November 11th Dad, in peaceful sleep, laid down and went into eternal rest without pain, sickness, or struggle. 

</div>

<div>In the week leading up to his passing, Dad asked several times daily to go home, and home was expressed as "Fresno", "to one of his children's home", "near the gravesite of his wife," or "near Mom". On Friday, he asked nearly thirty times "to go home.” On Saturday, he asked nearly ten times “to go home.” On this day, he had the company of his eldest son, Hany, and his wife, Tammy, visiting from Oakland. Before they set off back home: Dad seemed to bounce out of his seat, wrapping his arms around Hany and Tammy; he declared that he'd like to pray for them. Dad’s speech held the familiar boom &amp; authority that I remembered in my youth and before Dad’s dementia.

<div>Further, on Sunday,  Dad participated in celebrating his grandson’s 5th birthday. With large mouthy smiles, he played "Keepy Uppy" tossing the balloon into the air trying not to let it hit the ground. Dad blew the birthday kazoo for a good part of the party, held a joyous grin throughout the afternoon, and lastly, with assistance, he rode the kid’s power wheel quad for several loops at turtle speed. He had a great send-off!

<div>A few things I wanted to share about Dad is who he was…

</div>

<div>He was commonly known as Lokru (teacher, in Khmer).  Dad fit many roles as husband, dad, uncle, father-in-law, brother, pastor, mentor, friend, and a sounding board... until 2003 when he retired from his role as Reverend starting Stage 1 Dementia. In 2003, they moved in with one of his older sons, Sarepta, and his family moving from Long Beach, CA to Fresno, CA.

<div>Dad’s cognitive health went from stage 1 to 5 over the 20 years. When Mom passed, his decline was uncovered and transparent. The decline of what was 20 years was revealed in these final 20 months. Mom executed a multitude of care for Dad;  all his meals, carrying out hygiene and dressing, and assistance with walking, moving, etc.

<div>For Dad: grieving while struggling with dementia was compounding. Dad’s agency and capabilities decreased; He could not see well, hear, read, remember well, study, watch TV, etc. To onlookers, most of Dad was in good health yet his dementia caused things to crawl to a slow pace. Dad’s begging of "going home" which was louder and more frequent in the last days was finally lulled into sleep. He went home without struggle, pain, or sickness. Like Mom on a Monday, as well in his sleep like she…he entered Heaven.

My sister, Kandi Pombo Bier was murdered.  She was found this morning by her only child,  Anthony Pombo. <div>The news of James Michael Patton's passing sent shockwaves throughout both Phi Delta Theta - California Upsilon and our Central Valley Community, leaving many of us deeply saddened by the loss of a cherished and esteemed alumnus of the Fraternity. James was a beacon of light with a gifted way of entering a room that would instantly uplift the spirits of those around him. His radiant smile and infectious laughter were known to be contagious, spreading joy to everyone he encountered.

<div>James was a remarkable individual who possessed an innate ability to love others with his whole heart. He embraced each person he met, offering a welcoming attitude that made everyone feel valued and appreciated. <div>As a beloved member of Phi Delta Theta, James played an integral role in fostering a strong sense of Brotherhood within the Fraternity. He went above and beyond to ensure that every Brother felt included and supported. His commitment to lifting others' spirits was evident in his constant efforts to make everyone laugh. James had a knack for finding humor in even the most challenging situations, brightening the Fraternity house with his magnetic energy.

<div>In the wake of his tragic passing, James' absence has left a deep void within the Fraternity and in the lives of those who were touched by his presence. The loss of a Brother has brought immeasurable grief, and the Brotherhood of Phi Delta Theta mourns together with James' family and friends during this difficult time.

<div>Recognizing the tremendous impact James had on their lives, Phi Delta Theta has set up a GoFundMe page to support the Patton family in their time of need. We understand that no amount of money can heal the wounds of loss, but we hope that the collective effort of the Fraternity can alleviate some of the financial burdens the Patton family may face. Funeral Expenses

Friends, on 12-27-2020 at 5:21 a.m. our family suffered a great loss; that is the hour that our devoted and loving mother and Grandmother Maria A. Contreraz was declared deceased. Devoted is a commonly used word in such situations but devoted was actually an understatement to who Maria was. Her whole life she was in the service of others. She gave her time, energy, and resources to others. She loved easily and forgave easily. She lived a selfless life and did nothing for herself. She battled and fought against COVID-19 since 11-21-2020. She was admitted on 12-2-2020 and during that time she touched many medical staff in the 3-east wing at Kaiser Permanente.. She was in love with the Lord and prayed in all things. Psalms 91 was engrained her mind and she loved the song “Un dia al a vez” or “One day at a time”.  She was a strong, competitive, and highly active, little woman. She was tiny but so strong! When her daughter sat with her as Maria was in the hospital bed, she needed to open a bottle of cranberry juice but could not. Maria got that bottle and opened it with no problems. Dr’s would ask her to try and sit for 20 minutes and she would sit for 30 minutes, just to show COVID and staff that she was a fighter. Due to covid restrictions no one was allowed to stay with her but by God’s grace and the amazing medical staff, we were granted permission for her to have a visitor (that ended up staying with her the last 23 days of her life). Her daughter and granddaughter were blessed in being able to care for her as she was in the hospital.  But even then, she was concerned for their well-being, reminding them to eat, to pay bills, to sleep, and when asked by the Dr. if she would accept life-saving-measures (Ventilator/intubation) she responded only if my daughter is not too tired to take care of me. She placed the value of others needs over the value of her own life. She never really understood how important, significant, needed, and valuable she was. Maria was survived by her only child Carlota Kincaid, 5 grandchildren Rosey, Jasmine, Marc, Christopher, and Johnathan, and her great granddaughter Charlotte. Her love, instructions, compassion, and her very being will always influence her family and future generations.<br /><br />This was such an unexpected experience. Even at the hospital she was using her last money to pay her Kohls credit card and next months rent. We were already planning for her to be discharged and come home. We still have her Christmas presents under our tree waiting for her. Both her daughter and granddaughter took off work to care for her at the hospital 23 days straight. Unfortunately, all our income has been exhausted during the time we ourselves battled covid-19 and then spent at the hospital.<br /><br />Today we ask for any amount that could help her family in paying for a funeral. The family needs approximately $11,000 for all expenses. Plot costs are $5000, the mortuary cost is $6000 and there are other expenses; everything is more complicated and expensive due to the nature of her death. We thank you for your time, giving, and prayers. Please continue to pray for our family as we suffer the loss of Maria because for those in our home, she was the only family we had contact with. Loss of Maria Contreraz

This summer during Youthrush (a summer program for Christian youth) Stephanie lent her car to a co-leader to drive home for the weekend. Unfortunately the co-leader didn't realize she had been driving half an hour with the emergency brake on until the car lit up in flames. Luckily the girl was able to pull over and get out of the car before anything more serious happened. The police and fire engine came to try and save the car, but it was too late- the engine was destroyed. <br /><br />Unfortunately her insurance won't cover it because she only had liability, and the girl who drove it is unable to pay the large amount to replace it.<br /><br />Stephanie Vargas is a SoulsWest graduate (and my bestfriend) and has been a part of youthrush for the last 4 summers; teaching young people about Jesus, mentoring them, as well as training young people to do outreach for God. During the year Stephanie is a college student studying Social work.  She also works for the Visalia Bilingual SDA Church as a Bible worker where she gives Bible studies and works with the church to lead out evangelistic events. Not having a car has really hindered Stephanie's impact on evangelism due to the lack of transportation. Without having a car it makes it difficult for her to go from house to house to give Bible studies as well as back and forth from college. Church family, friends and anyone reading this my appeal is simple: donate whatever you can. Not only will you be helping out a college student, but a missionary for the Lord's work. The $5,500 will help us pay for a used car, registration, and what was lost in the fire. In the beautiful country of Thailand sit camps of refugees seeking a better life. A life without persecution, a possibility to just live. This December, I would like to as part of AFCOE (the Amazing Facts Center of Evangelism)team join with AMEN to go into some Karen refugee camps in Thailand to provide much-needed medical and dental care to their inhabitants. AFCOE teams will conduct evangelist programs, as well as children's programs while working together with the AMEN volunteers to provide medical care.<br /><br />I will be working with the children and I would like to ask you to help me get there.
