Your donations will go directly to ensuring that expenses for the 2025 Scissortail Festival are covered regardless of those cuts, and may even be able to support future programming.

Support the Scissortail Creative Writing Festival!

<div>For more than a decade, the location at 717 Marin has been home to an iconic teahouse known as IntegriTea. In a historic location in downtown Vallejo, this eclectic setting has served as an art gallery, event space, and intimate music venue, as well as a place to sample and obtain a wide variety of herbal teas.

<div>The space has been many things to many people: a place for painters to display and sell their work, for community action groups to hold meetings, for small classes to teach various crafts skills, diverse healing activities such as yoga and acupuncture, free writing and music workshops...it's an open-door resource for the community which has always made space for local groups, for little or no charge.
</div>

<div>The teahouse has been a haven for the arts, but as with all good things, this part of its history is coming to a conclusion. A number of us who use and value this space have come together to assume the rent, with the intention to preserve and expand on the unique character of this community resource.
</div>

</div>
<div>With this spirit of community in mind, we have established the 717 Project, under the fiscal sponsorship of the Solano County Arts Council.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Our goal is to maintain access for the the type of community events mentioned above, and to evolve the potential for utilizing this intimate venue.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We have an opportunity to preserve and develop a true community resource, but we can’t do it without your help. To make this work, we’ll need to raise the rent and utilities of approximately $2000 a month. Once we’ve secured the funding for this, we can become self-sufficient through grants and other means, but time is of the essence.
</div>

</div>
<div>It is our intention to keep this community site open for integrative artistic expression with the same spirit of generosity under which it was established.
</div>

<div>As a poet, it’s my set belief that we can change the world through our words and actions, that with the proper intent we can create a better world to live in, one of sustainability and peace.

<div>With that motivation in mind, I’ve decided to take steps to put that into action by launching a years-long world tour as a Poetry Ambassador for Peace.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Throughout this voyage, I will be connecting with local cultural institutions and various artistic communities to share an international message of solidarity and peace through music, art and poetry.
</div>

</div>
<div>In an effort to expand and connect our global communities and poetry networks, I’ll be documenting this journey for both radio and television broadcast, which will also be made available online.
</div>

<div>Having located the perfect vehicle, a 2010 International Bus, I’m currently converting this into a mobile library and tour vehicle complete with a stage built from the wheelchair lift.

<div>that many tangents and side adventures will be taken in the natural course of the once in a lifetime opportunities that arise, the principle objective, that of connecting communities through poetry and the arts, will lead the way.

<div>Through existing and ever-expanding poetry networks, readings, performances, happenings and events will be scheduled to take place in cities and towns, at schools, universities, community spaces and more all around the planet, as I help to bring local voices onto a world sized stage.
</div>

<div>It’s my hope that through this goodwill poetry tour we can raise awareness of our own ability to build a different world, one where we work together as a true global community that builds upon the bonds of friendship and peace as the vision and way forward for a sustainable future for us all.

<div>Dr. Genea Brice was named the Inaugural Poet Laureate of The City of Vallejo, CA. She has had the high honor of sharing poetry locally, nationally, internationally, and globally. It is her sincere delight and honest pleasure to use poetry as a vehicle for literacy.

She has authored 18 poetry books, including <em>Fighting the Solar System </em>(2024). She is a member of the Revolutionary Poets Brigade and co-founded Vallejo Poetry Society.
