Pam Hawkins is facing a tough road ahead after needing hip surgery. The challenges of a broken health care system have made things even harder, and to make matters worse, she doesn't have paid leave this time around because she already had her other hip done. This means she’s left to recover without the financial safety net that so many of us rely on during difficult times.

<div>Despite my reluctance and discomfort in doing so, I must ask the community for help. When the Strum Shop relocated in 2016 to Vernon Street in Downtown Roseville, we understood that there would be challenges (less parking, customers having difficulty finding us; etc. ) But we did so anyway because we needed a larger space to host our many community events and to increase the number of available lesson studios. The first few years after the move were exceedingly challenging, to say the least. The cost of building permits was triple our expectation, which ate up our operating funds and caused delays in starting construction at the new location to the tune of several months. When we did finally begin renovations, we had a general contractor quit in the middle of the project, pushing our open date back even further, and our building costs through the roof (no pun intended). Once we sorted all of that out, we were informed that our parking lot was going to be torn out and replaced with a parking garage—a nice addition, but that project took two years to complete rather than the projected one year. Consequently, our sales dropped dramatically, about 32 percent, and remained low all the way through 2019.

<div>Then just as we were starting to make headway again, the global pandemic happened. Every aspect of the business was impacted. Sales took another hit, students were not renting instruments for school, we could not provide in-person lessons and we could not schedule any events, recitals, or performances. And the massive increase in freight/shipping charges made acquiring products for resale from manufacturers nearly impossible. I did everything I could to keep our doors open and our teachers and staff employed. We took whatever we could get for inventory, we offered free delivery and put more focus into online sales when customers could not enter the store, we offered lessons online, and we applied for every kind of state and federal assistance available.

<div>We did manage to get through all of these challenges and are looking at 2023 being our best year ever, but we had to take on a good deal of debt in order to get through it. Now, roughly 35 percent of our gross income is going directly toward paying down debt. I’ve been able to manage it so far but barely.  Any small hiccup could potentially break us, and now we are facing one.

<div>My wife, Sherrin, who makes Sherrin’s Threads guitar and ukulele straps, has been diagnosed with cancer.  Her first surgery was successful, but in a matter of only a few months, her cancer was back and had spread. The doctors are telling us that her cancer is not curable but through treatment, it can be managed.  We’ve spent thousands on her medical treatment so far and are still facing significant medical debt as we go forward with her prescribed treatment.   Paying both these medical bills, and trying to pay down the business debt has become unsustainable. In truth, it has been unsustainable for some time and is now catching up with us.

<div>My hope is to raise up to $90,000 to pay off the debt accumulated through the pandemic which would reduce monthly debt payment to approximately 10 percent, rather than 35 percent of our gross revenue per month.  This would open up a significant amount of cash flow each month that can go towards building up inventory, improving the pay for my employees, setting aside money for an emergency fund, and also helping cover my wife’s medical bills.

<div>From the very beginning, we wanted to be a different kind of music store where members of the community would feel welcome and have an opportunity to gather and make music together. In addition to our well-attended jams, strum-alongs, classes, and workshops, we have approximately 250 wonderful students taking private lessons here, we continue to be the hub for the greater Sacramento ukulele community and have made every effort to support school fundraising and outside community events like Roseville’s Downtown Tuesday Nights and Family Fun Night. It is our desire to continue to be a beacon of goodwill throughout the city of Roseville and surrounding areas, and in order to do so, we are asking for your assistance.

<div><span style="font-family:'-apple-system-body';">On Sunday November 27th, I had the pleasure of meeting this sweet young man for the first time, he and my daughter Laynie had been talking on the phone for a couple of months, this was only their second time meeting. He was with us almost all day, watched movies </span><font color="#333333" style="font-family:'-apple-system-body';">with Laynie </font><span style="font-family:'-apple-system-body';">and had a great dinner with our family and some of our friends. The accident happened just minutes from our home in Rio Vista. To know that we were the last ones with him has been very emotional and our hearts ache. Please join me in trying to lessen the burden in the only way we can for this poor family by raising some money to help with his funeral, memorial and whatever they may need to get through this tragic time. She was arrested on scene and received only minor injuries, while he died in transent to the hospital.

Ryan was the most amazing 18 year old, who was just really finally coming into his own. He had a job at a carwash and was working towards becoming a supervisor. He loved his car beyond words, and would constantly clean, wash and polish it even after long days of doing the same for other people's cars. He was a 2022 graduate of Elk Grove High School, and was so proud, in spite of past medical trauma and some schooling setbacks because of it, to have gotten his high school diploma. He loved working to perfect his skateboarding skills, "hang" with his friends, play video games online with his cousin Henry who is in Oklahoma, and "go to amusement parks with his family"...his words, that we were just told for the first time the day after his passing.

Ryan loved his family! He, just a week to the day before his passing spent the entire day with his Dad, Steve, Mom, Laura and little sister, Evelyn by going up to the foothills and picking out the family's Christmas tree, then went with them to take family photos later in the day. He also got to spend time with his Grandma Luby and his Grandparents Bob and Diane, along with cousins Colin, Natalie, and Darian and Uncle Bryan and Aunt Leta over the past couple of days of the holiday week, who were all so happy to have him around them. One of his most recent visits with his Mom, Kara included an escape room and quality time spent with his little brother Kade. 

Ryan genuinely had no clue how much of an impact he had on so many and how many people loved him in all aspects of his life. 

Rest in peace, our dear sweet boy. There aren't enough ways to say how much we love you.

<div>While on a walk Saturday afternoon, August 6, 2022, Firefly Olivia Walter was hit by a tram in Bremen, Germany. She suffered an acute subdural hematoma, a blood clot between the brain and the outer brain covering.  Olivia is in stable but critical condition after a decompressive craniectomy, where they removed part of her skull to make room for the blood clot and brain swelling. Olivia is being kept in a medically induced coma for at least the next several days.  She will have a new brain scan each day to assess her progress.

<div>Oliva's parents, Thomas and Roberta Walter, and her brother, Aaron, have arranged to travel to Bremen this week to be with her. Last-minute flights from San Francisco, California, to Bremen, Germany, costs thousands of dollars per person. It is also uncertain how long they will require accommodations as they support Olivia's recovery in Germany.

She’s a freelancer who lost all work during the pandemic. Now she lost a roommate, who was helping out with the rent, and my friend is now responsible for the full amount. This is a very tough time of year to rent anything, to find extra work, and make ends meet.

This is a person who’s never asked for a handout or anything for herself,. I know she’d rather feed the homeless than feed herself. And even with the threat of being arrested, she still continues to fulfill her mission to help the needy. She does this totally on her own. Every winter, for instance, she goes to neighborhoods around Manhattan, collecting winter coats, hats, gloves, and scarves. She distributes these and food to every person she can find. She has a friend who brings a truck and another friend to help distribute. She asks grocery stores to help with donations and she usually gets enough bread and peanut butter and bananas, makes soup and has friends storing food for her so she can continue.

Face Masks and Shields for Hospital Staff

They Stole All My Gear and My Work

This GoFundMe is now a fundraiser to help Tina pay her bills during a very trying time in her life, beset with serious medical issues but persevering.  Over the past month certain medical concerns that Tina has been grappling with have greatly increased in seriousness and come to a head.  She is  faced with several debilitating medical conditions that have not yet been fully diagnosed and she is taking heavy duty  medications to control the most severe symptoms .  More medical tests are planned with a good possibility of surgery being necessary in the near future.  Compounding all this are serious and very expensive dental issues which need to be treated ASAP.  Tina has been instructed by doctors to take at least two months off from work while everything is being diagnosed and treated.  This is a best case scenario.  In fact, depending on the outcome of the tests, this could become a long term disability situation. <br /><br />Following is the narrative I wrote about Tina when this fundraiser started out with the intent of getting her a camera.   Money is now needed for much more immediate and critical purpose... but the following information about Tina remains the same.<br /><br />Who among us does not love and appreciate Tina A?  I am creating this GoFundMe page along with Tracy Turner-Pain to provide an opportunity for us to give back to this selfless world class friend who gives and gives and gives some more with never an expectation of anything in return. Lets take a moment to consider what Tina has done for our Bay Area music community and beyond. <br /><br />Tina perceives needs and meaningfully responds to them. She is a go getter and a doer, always working for positive change. For instance, after hearing about several musical instrument thefts, Tina didn’t just express her sympathy, she created and continues to actively moderate a FB page clearinghouse called “Find My Gear California” where people can post pictures and information regarding stolen instruments, getting the word out immediately and facilitating the recovery of some of these instruments. <br /><br />Tina is dedicated to the Bay Area music scene and to musicians of our area and beyond. She has frequently volunteered for causes that assist musicians in obtaining health care and being able to obtain free testing for common health issues at various music events. She is particularly interested in encouraging Hep C testing and has already received grateful thanks from people who are now getting treatment due to her efforts. <br /><br />Tina has volunteered with the Golden Gate Blues society for years and now serves on the board. She updates us all on the diverse music scene around us via her FB posts and her entertaining and informative “Tina Time” video episodes on Facebook several times a week, infused with folksy enthusiasm and interesting anecdotes. Her sincere and infectious enthusiasm captivate and uplift us as individuals and a community.<br /><br />Perhaps Tina’s forte’ (among so many) is photography and videography. Have you ever seen Tina recording at a show with a camera in each hand, creating both pics and vids simultaneously? She is a marvel to watch engrossed in her avocation. Who among us does not enjoy Tina’s frequent live stream quality broadcasts from myriad musical events? Who does not relish seeing her phenomenal photographs, crafted with love, creativity and expertise? Tina also uses her computer graphics abilities to create amazing posters for musicians and events, usually at little or no charge. All of those things are pure acts of love, and they are always works of art due to her creativity, expertise and the pride she takes in them. Tina also is known for capturing the music appreciation community through her legendary selfies, often encompassing dozens of people. She does all that in the spirit of love and friendship and community building.<br /><br />Tina is one of the biggest hearted people I have ever met. She goes out of her way to accommodate traveling musicians who need a place to crash for the night (or two or more) or who need rides; She brings together people for Thanksgiving and other occasions, she cares deeply about issues that affect the common people, not only of our community, but also the world. She is always proactively dong something to help, to raise people up ... whether it is one homeless woman in front of Club Fox (gave her a gift) or groups of displaced or oppressed people for whom Tina will tirelessly advocate. Tina will always find the time in her busy schedule to reach out to people and let them know she cares and is there for them.<br /><br />Tina is a positive, upbeat, funny, wise, magnanimous, helpful, hugely talented, intelligent, insightful, endlessly giving person we are all fortunate to have in our lives. In the challenging world we live in, she is a beacon of light and grounding for so many of us … just a wonderful, deserving, generous member of our society who lives to make the world a better place in so many ways and to celebrate the best in every person She lives her life with so much integrity and is a precious gem in our midst.<br /><br />That said, Tina is also a person who needs our help. Tina Abbaszadeh Medical Fund

My brother John Parodi and my sister Debbie Parodi were killed in their home between May 29th and June 5th. Any help with expenses for their funerals would be greatly appreciated. I have to pay for the cremation expense and Debbies service expenses.  John's service will be held at the Stanislaus County National Cemetary.  No dates yet, but am assuming we will need these funds by Friday June 15th.<br />They were my brother and sister who I am going to miss greatly. Joseph is in recovery at his home  in Seaside.  Medicare will cover most of his hospital / rehabilation expenses. However, as a self-employed musician, he is reliant on his gigs to support himself, which he is  unable to do while he is a convalescent.  The amount projected here is an overall estimate. <strong>As many of you are aware, Our beloved friend Michael Xavier is in Saint Mary's hospital. <strong>Ann (Davis) Jensen has been diagnosed with Stage IIIB cervical cancer. She maintains a positive attitude and is steadfast in her faith that God and her medical team will successfully get her through this, but she needs financial help. </strong>This GoFundMe page was set up by friends of Ann in hopes of alleviating some of the financial burden and worry.<br /><br />Ann is a single mother of a beautiful 15 year old daughter, and a dear friend to so many. She's a lifelong resident of Livermore, and a 1982 graduate of Granada High School. She is one of those people that doesn’t know a stranger. Always greats you with a huge smile and takes genuine interest in getting to know you. She was born with a beautiful singing voice. Her passion is music and she has enjoyed performing with various local bands over the years.<br /><br /><strong>• Cancer Diagnosis</strong><br />Ann had not been feeling well over the holidays and into the new year. While at home alone with her daughter on Monday, 1/15/18, she began hemorrhaging and lost conciousness. She was rushed by ambulance to Valley Care. Her hemoglobin count was so low (down to 6)  making her condition critical. She was admitted to Kaiser Walnut Creek and received seven blood transfusions over the course of a week. Exams discovered a mass on her cervix, and biopsy results confirmed it was malignant. Ann had a PET scan and was informed on Wednesday, 1/31/18, that she has<strong> Stage IIIB cervical cancer (meaning the cancer has grown into the walls of the pelvis, and to nearby lymph nodes).</strong><br /><br /><strong>• Treatment Plan</strong><br />The initial treatment plan is radiation five days a week for five weeks, along with weekly chemo infusions. The treatments are to begin as soon as possible (schedule to be confirmed on 2/5/18). In the meantime, and during treatment, she is not to exert herself, and needs to reduce stress. After completing the treatments they will conduct more scans to see if cancer cells are still present. If cancer cells remain she will undergo a hysterectomy. <br /><br />• <strong>How You Can Help</strong><br />Ann lives paycheck to paycheck and hasn’t been able to work since 1/11/18. She does not have sick leave so there is no money coming in. Our beloved friend Scott Goldberg was struck by a car as he was outside talking to neighbors on a beautiful evening. Scott suffered serious injuries ranging from a partially crushed leg, broken ribs as well as a crushed arm. The reckless driver hit Scott and his neighbor and pushed them from the driveway through the house and into the kitchen. Please lift Scott and his family in prayer as he has a long road ahead of him.
