I’ve even been able to return to work part-time, which feels great. Next week, I’ll begin three months of intensive chemotherapy followed by 12 months of immunotherapy, all in Gainesville, GA.

Her love and kindness for animals are reflected in her menagerie of large and small pets, which brighten her days. Most importantly, Lisa is a devoted friend to so many in our community, always the first to lend a hand or share her music to lift others’ spirits. <strong>Now, she needs us</strong>.

<div>Unfortunately, Lisa's recovery will prevent her from working for quite some time, putting a significant financial strain on her and her husband, Filmer. Filmer has been by Lisa’s side every step of the way and has had to miss work to support her through numerous hospitalizations, medical tests, and doctor appointments. The financial burden is overwhelming, especially as both jobs offer limited unpaid leave, and Lisa is now at the end of hers.

Help Lisa Kilby Heal & Get Back to the Life She Loves

<div>Hello, My name is Ashlyn, Mark's niece. Mark tragically and unexpectedly passed away on the morning of 08/09/2023 from injuries he sustained in an accidental fall while away at a race with his brother and father near Appleton, WI. He fell about 20 feet, breaking both hips, his pelvis, a rib, some vertebrae and also damaged his aorta. He was airlifted to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee where Jen was able to spend his final days with him.

<div>This unexpected tragedy comes with significant costs to Jen who is now a single mom to three amazing children, one of whom was recently diagnosed with diabetes.

“We come into your home on the worst day of your life. We are trained firefighters. We’re ready to respond. We’re calm and professional. Some might say we’re unflappable in the face of danger. But what’s going on inside our heads when the emergency is over? We’re human too.<br /><br />“Sometimes what we witness during a call hits too close to home or the pressures of life outside the firehouse seem insurmountable. Before we know it, the walls we’ve established to protect ourselves emotionally begin to crack. We’re often the last to notice. But if they aren’t shored up, those walls might come crashing down.” -Firefighter<br /><br /><br />Day after day, firefighters and other first responders risk their lives for people they have never met. In one twenty-four hour shift, this population may be exposed to any number of traumatic events, from wildfires they can't control, to patients they can’t save.  Although these men and women are incredibly strong, everyone needs support from time to time, and  when dealing with trauma, and individuals exposed to trauma, we know that sometimes indirect and grounding support, as well as social contact, can be a very effective aid to treatment for people who have gone through some of the realities outlined above that many of us cannot imagine. <br /><br /><br />Enter Team Kerith, the Golden Retriever, certified crisis response therapy dog and her handler, Heidi Carman. Through their volunteer work at Marin Health Medical Center’s Emergency Department, Kerith (a Guide Dog for the Blind career changed Golden Retriever) found her true calling. She provides unconditional love and instant stress relief to first responders. She forms bonds with the firefighters by simply being herself: she greets with playful wiggles, adoring eye contact, and makes each person she meets feel important, special, and loved.  The experience that Kerith is able to provide can be invaluable to individuals suffering from PTSD symptomology.<br /><br /><br /> Kerith has become a member of the Marin County Fire Fighting family. She is there for the crew when they return from a bad call or when they are simply getting ready for dinner. There are many unknowns, since the nature of a first responder’s job is unpredictable, but knowing Kerith will be there to greet them at the end of the day with a wagging tail and a smile is not one of them. <br /><br /><br />Therapy dogs are helping change the stigma around mental health for first responders. Studies have shown that interaction with therapy dogs can provide both mental and physical health benefits including:<br /><br />Releasing hormones that play a part in elevating moods<br />Lower anxiety and reduced feelings of loneliness<br />Mental stimulation<br />Lower blood pressure and improved cardiovascular health<br />Slower breathing<br />Specially trained therapy dogs like Kerith are beneficial to the firefighter population because 30% of first responders have PTSD, and this population is sadly 50% more likely to complete suicide than the public.<br /><br /><br />This fund will allow Team Kerith to provide invaluable services to over 400 Marin County firefighters. 100% of the funds cover Kerith’s direct time with firefighters and transportation costs to be wherever “there” is when she is most needed.  Kerith will visit fire stations, be on call for critical incident stress debriefing, as well as on call to support crews at Cal Fire wildfire basecamps.

On Wednesday September 5th, our dear friend Jonah was taken from us in a senseless act of violence.<br /><br />The Independent has set up this fundraiser in her memory. Any amount is appreciated, and will go DIRECTLY and ENTIRELY to her wife and  family. Jonah was a sweet and smiling part of our family. <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/27862580_15190868820_r.jpeg" alt="27862580_15190868820_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" />Saturday, February 17th, 2018  Mickey Jay Saenz, a young Deaf husband and father, was tragically taken from his family.   Mickey was struck by a vehicle as he walked along a nearby roadway to where their family lived.   He has left behind his young pregnant Deaf wife and their beautiful three year old daughter.  As you can imagine during these tough economic times this family was trying to establish themselves and their future.  Circumstances had finally seemed to be heading in a positive direction when this tragedy occurred.  We are hoping that through everyone's contributions we can raise enough to cover the funeral expenses, as well as to provide for the immediate and future needs of this young mother and her two children.  If you are able to donate to Hope for MaryAnn and Miya, you would be giving a small piece of security to a young mother who is trying to figure out the path forward for this young family.  Covering funeral costs are only the beginning of their journey.  If you are reading this I consider you part of the community who can make an impact on the lives of this family today and well into the future, providing peace and security for the difficult days ahead.  Lets show young Miya and her soon to be born sister that there is still good in this world.  That even though life may seem uncertain during this time, that there are those around her who are willing to support her and encourage their family as they grieve the loss of a husband and father.  We can not fill the hole in their hearts that the loss of Mickey has left behind, but we can try to fill their lives with love and compassion and give them peace of mind with a generous donation that becomes their Hope for the future.  Thank you in advance for your contribution and your thoughts and prayers for the family.  Please consider sharing this with your social networks and those who are likeminded!  I know the family would appreciate anything you may be able to do.

Many of you know our dear, special friends Susan Shockey and Claire Jenks who have been together for 25 years . It is with great sadness to share that Claire passed away unexpectedly today.  In this time of deep sorrow,  we are reaching out to our community of friends to seek much needed financial support to help Susan with funeral  and other expenses related to Claire's untimely death.  In addition Susan will need to leave her home, an added stressor, due to financial constraints of medical expenses.
