<div>462 Halsey Community Farm was started in 2012 by a group of Bed-Stuy residents who dreamed of a greener future for their neighbors. Co-founded by Shatia Jackson and Kristen Bonardi Rapp, the garden sprung to life from what was once a vacant lot, growing to be part of the fabric of the urban green spaces that sustain our city. Now, the farm thrives as a 100% volunteer-member supported agricultural community center, providing residents with a chance to grow and share healthful food and foster connections with neighbors and land.

<div>Today the 462 Halsey Community Farm is a vibrant space with 16 communally tended raised garden beds, all cultivated and cared for by members and volunteers. Our gates are open regularly so our community can enjoy the space and interact with growth in action.

<div><strong>OUR PROGRAMS</strong>
</div>
<div>462 Halsey serves the Bedford-Stuyvesant community as an essential green space through robust practices and community programming that serve our garden ethos, including:
</div>
<ul>
<li><strong>COMPOSTING</strong>. Our compost team processes over a ton of food scraps each year. Neighbors drop off food scraps year-round in a mutually generative practice.
</li>
<li><strong>SUPPORTING THE BEE POPULATION</strong>. 462 Halsey is celebrating a decade of beekeeping. Our apiary was started in the summer of 2015, and our veteran apiarist Bonnie Banks, along with trusted apiary apprentices, tend to beehives that help keep our garden and surrounding nature pollinated and bountiful. Honey is also shared amongst the community.
</li>
<li><strong>PUBLIC EVENTS &amp; WORKSHOPS</strong>. Educational and interactive workshops including nature-based poetry, guided meditation, garden tool-training, agricultural methods, and cooking classes are regularly provided throughout the growing season at the garden. Our workshops act as key moments for neighbors throughout Brooklyn to connect, learn, and develop skills in mutual reciprocity with the earth. Favorite events have included mushroom growing workshops, hot-sauce making, backyard composting 101, and our annual Earth Day celebration.

<li><strong>VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES</strong>. The 462 Halsey Community Farm regularly hosts between 80-120 volunteers a year who help tend to the space, process compost, execute special building projects, and more.

<div>Now in our 14th season, The 462 Halsey Community Farm envisions a sustainable, connective, and inspiring green space that will serve our community into the future. The land has become a pivotal hub for the neighborhood, and we are charged with maintaining its vibrancy for years to come.

<div><strong>Community green spaces have never been more important</strong>. With the reduction of city-wide compost programs, we will continue to act as a community composting location, increasing our compost program, providing education, and utilizing the compost produced to invigorate our plants and better serve the community with our harvest.

<div>In 2025, we will offer community workshops spotlighting local voices on topics ranging from environmental preservation, culinary arts, creative arts, bee-keeping and more. <strong>All of this will be done while offering a space for community members to connect and become empowered to engage with the land around them</strong>.

<div>The knowledge 462 Halsey provides through our programs helps to build earth-conscious citizens, and we hope to increase our local sense of sustainability and interdependence.

After years of using a tank system, which our dedicated members would fill weekly from a hydrant across the street, The 462 Halsey Community Farm was recently connected to city water in partnership with <strong>NYC Parks GreenThumb</strong>. In 2025, we will build a new integrated irrigation system that will feed all of our garden beds and reduce water waste.

<li><strong>Art and Signage</strong>. We will be beautifying our space with new art pieces, including a mural on our new water hub and exterior signage. We are also improving way finding and will create new food scrap drop-off signage in our compost space.

<div>On Friday, June 21, under the Strawberry Moon, I opened my e-mail to the news that I have been accepted into the Community Dharma Leader (CDL) program at Spirit Rock Meditation Center. CDL is a dharma training program that I have aspired to attend since I started along the Buddhist Path many years ago. Applications for this program open every 3 - 4 years, are by invitation only, include many pre-requisites AND an interview. To meet all the prerequisites, to be invited to apply and to be accepted into the program - WOOF - I am ecstatic.

<div>The CDL program at Spirit Rock exists to develop the next generation of dharma leaders with the capacity, resilience and needed skills to carry the dharma (the teachings of the Buddha) forward. This training will support dharma leaders in cultivating the inner resources to skillfully address personal, socio-political and environmental suffering and other issues. Grounded in ancient Buddhist wisdom, graduates of CDL learn to embody, articulate, share and cultivate the dharma within diverse, multi-generational, multi-ethnic, and multi-cultural communities, so that it is accessible for all who seek refuge.

<div><strong>WHY I AM ATTENDING</strong>

<div>I have / hold the seat of facilitator and teacher in various mindfulness and meditation communities. I have attempted to hold that seat with integrity - naming the things that I know, acknowledging what I don’t know, and actively seeking to close the gap (and, of course, cultivating patience in acknowledging that often, awareness arises on its own time).
</div>

<div>As a facilitator, my approach aims to disrupt cycles of erasure through personal inquiry and the support of sangha. Using meditation and creative practice, I blend dharma and art to lead myself and others toward liberation. This primarily looks like holding space that (1) Explores experiences of suffering to gain insights and awaken consciousness (2) Supports BIPOC communities to reengage or deepen their relationship to the Earth and (3) Challenges European thought frames that reinforce unconscious behaviors and patterns.
</div>

<div>Through CDL, I will strengthen my exploration of these three pillars through the Buddhist wisdom taught during the program. I hope to work with new Americans (first or second-generation Americans, immigrants, refugees, or temporary / long-term visitors) and more broadly, anyone who feels that their experience falls outside of the binary. My long-term goal is to facilitate dharma-based creative placemaking and self-making within these communities.

<div>It has been eight years (!) since I have been in a dharma training program and I feel a positive urgency (samvega) to engage in in-depth training to develop a deeper understanding of the Dharma so that I can continue to share Buddhist teachings responsibly and skillfully.

<div>If you’ve spent any time with me you know that I talk about suffering all the time. Teaching and facilitating is how I respond to the suffering, my own and the global, and how I fulfill my ecosystem roles at Healer and Weaver. Attending CDL is a personal investment in my growth on the Dharma path and a continued commitment to collective liberation.

<div>I received a BIPOC scholarship which brings the full cost of the two-year training to $5,450. <strong>The program asked that I make a minimum 25% deposit of the full tuition cost by this Friday, June 28 - that’s $1,362.50. I’ve thankfully received an extension on that deadline. Right now, I am raising for the cost of the deposit the first couple of monthly payments of $280. Your support will help cover my program deposits and provide me with </strong>little wiggle room while I wait to hear back from the scholarships that I am applying for. <strong>Please consider making a donation and helping me reach my goal by July 27, 2024. </strong>

Support Jessica's Journey to Dharma Leadership

We (i.e. Joni, Zena's mom; Mona, Zena's sister; and Amy, Zena's Aunt) are organizing this fundraiser on behalf of Chris and Zena Edgar.  Below, Chris shares their story in his own words.<br /><br />****<br />On March 20, 2020, Zena had an unthinkable accident. After nursing our eight-month-old son, Ansel, and putting him to bed, she fed herself, and choked while eating. Thankfully, I was home while this happened, but a horrific domino effect followed. I called 911, and after failed attempts at the heimlich maneuver, Zena passed out and I was directed to attempt CPR. When the first responders arrived, creating an airway was unsuccessful. She aspirated, had a double cardiac arrest, and was without oxygen for a significant period of time. She was rushed to the ICU and put on life support. <br /><br />Zena was in a coma for nearly two weeks. She was in a vegetative state for another two, and her prognosis was very grim. Our personal crisis had collided with the global crisis of COVID-19, and we could not visit her. Zena was alone in the hospital for over a month.  <br /><br />When she was discharged, we brought her home and continued her care with the anticipation of transitioning to home hospice at the end of a month. At that time, she was in a minimally conscious state, confined to a hospital bed with a tracheostomy tube to help her breathe and a feeding tube to provide her nutrition. Within weeks of being at home, her progress exceeded the expectations of nearly every doctor we had spoken with. She started mouthing words and sentences. Eventually, she was able to attempt to speak through a valve placed over her tracheostomy tube. <br /><br />After several weeks of homecare, with an Occupational, Physical, and Speech therapist coming to the house once a week, Zena showed enough progress to qualify for inpatient rehab at the West Florida Rehabilitation Institute. She stayed in the brain injury unit for six weeks. During her time there, Zena had her tracheostomy removed, and participated in multiple therapies a day. These therapies were focused on the initial steps of helping her relearn speech, mobility, and performing daily life activities. The feeding tube remained but she began to start eating soft foods again. She took her first steps with the help of her physical therapist and assistive walking devices. By the time she was discharged in late July she had made significant improvements. Her speech and mobility were slowly returning. However, we learned that her short-term memory, and vision are significantly impaired. <br /><br />Zena has been working hard at home for five months now. She can stand and walk short distances with a person on each side for balance. Her communication skills are improving. Her long-term memory is strong. Through vision rehabilitation therapy, her sight is in a constant state of change as she learns to compensate for her vision impairment. Zena tells jokes. She asks questions. Her questions are always about how other people are doing. She’s as compassionate as ever. <br /><br />Zena has made big strides and she’ll make more. <strong>Here’s where we are now:</strong> <br /><br />We are three months away from the one-year anniversary of the accident. We have been told that for people with anoxic brain injuries, the long-term outcome becomes clear around that one-year mark. <strong>We want Zena to have the best chance for recovery she can have.</strong> <br /><br />We have an aggressive therapy plan for the next three months, but her need for therapy will be long term as she continues to work toward her independence. Zena will be returning to West Florida Rehab. This time for outpatient therapy. She will need physical, speech, and occupational therapies. (Perhaps the therapy that is not self-explanatory is occupational therapy. The goal of occupational therapy is to strengthen Zena’s abilities to perform the activities of daily life. She is relearning how to brush her teeth, how to feed herself, how to bathe, and do other daily activities independently.) Additionally, Zena will continue with vision rehabilitation, and neuro-psychology. <br /><br /><strong>Our goal is to raise $24,500 in the first quarter of 2021 for Zena’s Road to Recovery.</strong> <br /><br />●      Help Zena learn to walk and increase her mobility. Your donation of $135 will pay for a day of physical therapy for Zena.<br /><br />●      Help Zena learn to gain more daily independence. Your donation of $135 will pay for a day of occupational therapy for Zena.<br /><br />●      Help Zena improve her oral communication skills. Your donation of $135 will pay for a day of speech therapy for Zena.<br /><br />●      Help Zena improve her vision. Your donation of $110 will pay for a day of vision therapy for Zena.<br /><br />●      Help Zena improve her cognition. Your donation of $100 will pay for a day of neuro-psychology for Zena.<br /><br />●      Your donation of $20 will contribute to an hour of help provided by a home health aide to assist Zena on her Road to Recovery.<br /><br />We are grateful for donations of any size and appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers.<br /><br />We understand these are trying times. That is not lost on us. The challenges this year have been extraordinary. Zena's Road to Recovery (anoxic brain injury)

<strong>Nina is a first generation</strong> <strong>honors student</strong> who got a scholarship to do her masters degree in Sociology. In January of 2016, Nina was brutally <strong>assaulted by a police officer</strong> in Greeley, Colorado when walking home with friends. The officer broke her humorous in 3 places which required surgery and 50 staples in her arm. This injury and the <strong>nerve damage</strong> was so severe that doctors told her she would never be able to use her arm again. <br /><br />When she was assaulted, Nina was in her second semester of <strong>graduate school</strong> but was unable to finish her last class when an overwhelming burden of<strong> pain and lawyer bills</strong> plagued her and her family. Help Nina Heal & Finish Her Master's Degree

Help us bring young adult members of our South American family to Mendocino Sufi camp and beyond!<br /><br />As many of you know, the 3rd Sufi Youth Jam took place in March in Colombia. It offered a unique opportunity to share songs, practices, life experiences, and above all strengthen our global family by building lifelong friendships. <br /><br />Three of the precious humans we spent time with there feel a great call to travel to the West Coast and dive into this summer's camps and retreats alongside their North American family. We hope to bring Tania Shahida, David Jamal, and their two children  Uky and Imi to Mendocino youth retreat, main camp, and Northwest camp. Our dear friend Sophya Dhyana will be attending these retreats for her second go round, this time as a partner and sweetie to Nathan  Wasserman, a lifelong Sufi many of you know well.<br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/30570706_1529041004505385_r.jpeg" alt="30570706_1529041004505385_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" />[Lovely Sophya at Quilotoa Lake in the Ecuadorian Andes.]<br /><br />The wisdom, music, and stories David, Tania, and Sophya are ready to share with our community are invaluable. These three are beautiful leaders, musicians and medicine people in the truest sense of the word. They carry messages our North American family needs desperately. As students of Murshida Darvesha, Murshid Abraham and Murshida Halima, they infuse Sufi practice with a deep respect for indigenous tradition, music and wisdom; honoring, serving and remembering Pachamama. On top of that, many of you are familiar with the high costs of camp tuition.  Rest assured we are exploring all possible options to secure support from existing scholarship reservoirs. <br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/30570706_1529096481768876_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="30570706_1529096481768876_r.jpeg" />[Uky, 13, and Imi, 9.]<br /><br />There was an outpouring of generosity for our cause at both this year's Jamiat Ahm in Portland and Sky Camp near Eugene. THANK YOU so much to those of you who already contributed. You strengthened our belief in our family's ability to make things happen, so much that we decided to try to raise enough funds for Tania and David's kids (8 and 13) to travel with them. If we are not able to raise the full projected $15,000 for all five of these sweeties to travel, there is a possibility that the kids will be able to stay with family members while David and Tania are away. However, this would mean they could not stay in the States to attend Northwest Sufi camp, and this would be a serious loss (for us). Plus, their family would need to be apart for almost a month.<br /><br />So, we ask that you please give generously.
