Even seniors struggling with dementia or Alzheimer’s will start talking about their childhood pets, about happy memories from their lives. You can see it in their eyes, the younger person coming out to play. Seniors to seniors; they see each other differently than other people do. The bond between them is something they understand in a way no one else could."

<div>Have you ever walked into a senior care center, maybe to visit your mom, or your grandfather, and noticed that elder? The one, sitting alone? Not interacting, not talking, or smiling? As if they’ve already retreated from the world, and it’s heartbreaking.

<div>Shauna noticed this, too. Every time she’d bring her dogs in to visit her mother at her care center, she wasn’t the only one to brighten up and come alive again. “I started noticing that residents I’d never seen before would come out on the days that I’d bring my babies in to see Mom. They’d be waiting for a chance to see the puppies.” Shauna would gently place the dogs into an elderly pair of arms and she would see it- the tentative smile on a wrinkled face, their cheek resting against the soft fur, and sometimes, words from a soul who hadn’t spoken in a long time.

Jillian is now 11, and each year that has passed that she has been healthy has been a blessing. Every year she proved the doctors wrong and helped her parents keep hope that what we feared most may never come. </span>

Last winter during routine tests, an ultrasound showed two lesions on Jillian’s liver.  After retesting in November, the lesions had grown. Then in mid-December a MRI showed it was actually one large lesion instead of two, and the shape and size were worrisome for cancer.  <a dir="ltr">On December 23rd</a> a biopsy was done and just before New Year's we got the call that thankfully the results came back as benign.  We did our best to enjoy Christmas with the kids, but waiting for that phone call was emotionally rough.  Although the doctor told us it was benign, he said that </span>

Jillian and Jennifer will travel down to Stanford from Portland later this month to complete the pre-transplant tests/work up.  Because of COVID restrictions Ryan and Reese won’t be able to come with them. After the tests, Jillian will be given a PELD score and placed on the waiting list.  Then we wait for a liver that is a good match for her or find a friend/family member that could be a living donor.  </span>

Jillian’s Liver Transplant Fund

Marina “Mina” Vera was just over 21 weeks pregnant with her first child. The baby was a boy, and she was so excited. She and her boyfriend had lovingly nicknamed the little boy “Murphy.” While is Colorado spending time with her boyfriend, Marina began feeling sick, experiencing fatigue, intermittent fevers, and a return of nausea. She tried taking it easy and resting, but began bleeding and cramping on Monday, 11/16, and soon after her water broke. She was taken to the hospital by her boyfriend where they were advised that little Murphy had passed away. She was given medication to help induce labor and dilate her cervix so they could get baby out, but before that could happen her temperature spiked to 104 degrees and her blood pressure dropped to dangerously low levels. She was immediately transferred out to a large University hospital where she underwent an emergent procedure to get little Murphy out. Her procedure went well, but she went into full septic and cardiogenic shock, and was transferred to the ICU, intubated and in critical condition, where she remains today, fighting for her life. Being out of state and at an out-of-network provider, and facing an extensive hospitalization, she is going to need help with her medical bills, hopeful recovery, and help with giving little Murphy a proper resting place. He was rescued a few months ago in terrible shape. He was so matted his pelt came off in one piece and he had over 150 foxtails.  The most special part of his rescue is his bonded friend, Nugget. When they were rescued Goldie wouldn't get in the car without insisting someone follow him. So they did and that's when they found Nugget hiding in their den.  Goldie loves and worries about Nugget. He truly is the sweetest dog! Their rescue has been a special one for us and they have been doing so well. Until two nights ago when Goldie was very sick. He went to the vet yesterday and into surgery for what the vet thought was a blockage. However, there was something wrong with Goldie's stomach and he stitched him up and said we needed to see a specialist. Goldie is at Blue Pearl and we desperately need donations so he can receive a life saving surgery. Currently there is a thickening blocking the entry from his stomach to his intestines and he won't survive without surgery. <br /><br />Any size donation helps. <p>My name is Sean Kendall. I am the owner of the dog Geist who was shot and killed by a police officer after he illegally trespassed on private property.</p>
<p>Geist was merely protecting his property from an unknown intruder when the officer entered the yard looking for a lost child (who was later found sleeping, safely, in his home) and instead of walking away or using non lethal means, the officer killed Geist. </p>
