MAESTRO JOEY HEREDIA NEEDS OUR HELP!!!!

<div>Our very dear and beloved friend and colleague, Dean Brown, has a very aggressive form of cancer, and needs all the help and support we can give him. The particular type and source of the cancer remains a mystery after more than a month of testing. Dean was forced to check in to the hospital on October 3rd and remains there still while the medical staff tries to figure it out. This particular cancer, or cancers, is unbelievably painful as well as debilitating so Dean is on some pretty heavy sedation. The doctors have begun a sort of general immunotherapy to try to do something while they continue to diagnose it.

<div>It goes without saying that for ANYONE diagnosed with something like this here in America, the financial devastation can and is rapidly does become catastrophic. Dean is unable to work and there are medical co-pays, transportation bills, all the sides of this that Medicare doesn’t cover, quite probably travel and fees to specialists, just to name a few. Life keeps going right along with all the usual expenses on top of all the towering medical bills, but now with no income to pay for them. Any of his musician friends can relate to the way that a diagnosis like this would absolutely up-end our lives.

Dean Brown's Medical Battle

***UPDATE May 29th, 2023*** Max was born on January 4th of 2023. We knew at the anatomy scan that he had a severe critical heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. He spent the first three months of his life, exactly, in the cardiovascular ICU after his first of three open heart surgeries, this one called, The Norwood. He basically has half a heart and the expert team of doctors and surgeons have re-plumbed his heart to reroute the blood flow, essentially causing his red and blue blood to mix (this is what they want). He has a Cath procedure coming up and two more surgeries - the Glenn and the Fontan. Max is doing good. He'll never have a normal heart, unless he has to have a transplant, but he can have a somewhat normal life, God willing. We have a ways to go. The first few years of life for HLHS kids is always rough; that's what we're told, and so far that's been true. We are in a period right now called "Interstage" where the mortality rate is highest, so we've pulled our daughter from school to protect us from any potential illness, any of which could prove fatal for Max. This is life right now. Max is here and he is so loved. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments and I can address them in a video. Thank you! ----------------------------------------- On April 27th, 2022, we discovered that we were pregnant with our second child, who is due to enter the world in early January 2023. On July 6th, we learned it was a boy! This was such great news as there are only a handful of boys on both sides of our family. We named him Maximillian Robert. Then on August 16th, the shocking news came after his first full anatomy scan. Max is afflicted with a severe congenital heart defect, which was soon diagnosed as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). Mystified, worried, confused, scared, and saddened were a fraction of the many emotions and states of mind we would soon find ourselves in. One of the main difficulties we are up against is that the hospital specializing in pediatric cardiology happens to be in Oklahoma City, a 1.5 hours drive one way, and that's in perfect weather. In the months ahead, we will travel back and forth to OKC for weekly ultrasound and OBGYN appointments about ten times until finally, we will be admitted into the hospital and begin the rigors of induction and childbirth. Both the doctors and we are hoping for a normal birth. Thankfully, Afton is in good health and the pregnancy has been normal. Once born, Max will be stabilized and scheduled for his first of three significant surgeries designed to reroute the blood flow in and around his heart, called the Norwood. The second, the Glenn, will come at about four to six months of life, and the third and final, The Fontan, at about 2-3 years. After each of these procedures, the post-op process is estimated to be about three months long, at the very least. During that time, Afton will relocate to Oklahoma City, presumably staying at the Ronald McDonald House, but possibly in an extended stay AirBnb. I will remain in Tulsa, tending to Minerva, the cats, the house, and teaching five days a week at the University of Tulsa. Minerva and I will hopefully travel down to OKC to see Max and spend time with Afton as much as possible. I can't even imagine what kind of stress, both emotionally and financially, this will place on us. We are in no position to turn down any form of assistance at this point, which is why we are starting this fundraiser. Afton will be obviously taking off from her work as a professional chorister at her church job as long as she is in OKC. This alone will put us in a rough spot financially. We fortunately have Soonercare Medicaid which seems to be covering everything so far, but we’re not sure about what that will look like with everything that’s to come. We have amazing support in many other forms from our families, church, and friends, but as you can imagine, this will still be a trying time for all. We have received countless messages from friends and fans who have asked how they can help and where they can donate, so this is the place to do so. <div>But that is not all that makes him great — he is a wonderful friend; a hilarious re-teller of B-horror movies and old TV tropes; a skilled line artist of psychedelic drawings which <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pete.zeldman/photos_by" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">you may have seen on his Facebook feed</a>; a sensitive, enlightening teacher who has been giving back to the music community and up-and-coming young musicians for years; and he is also Cheryl’s loving husband and partner of 20 years living in England outside of London.

<div>In March of 2021 Pete was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer.
</div>

</div>
<div>It started with a pain behind his ribs. The NHS (the UK's National Health Service) doctor whom he saw for it first “fast-tracked” him for pancreatic cancer treatment, but then for some reason decided to remove Pete off the fast-track, thinking he didn’t actually have this cancer. Unfortunately, that doctor erred and Pete lost precious time. Soon, it became clear that Pete did have pancreatic cancer. Fortunately, Pete then found an extremely well-regarded oncologist with the NHS to take over his case.

<div>At first it looked like he was inoperable. He was put on a 3-month course of chemo to try to shrink the tumor in hopes of becoming operable. After 3-months, the tumor hadn’t shrunk, but his cancer markers had improved so much that the oncologist decided to go another three months to see if they could shrink the tumor enough to make him operable and thus remove this cancerous tumor.

<div>AND THEY DID.

<div>His highly complex surgery was set for last December 21, 2021. The surgery, by the surgeon’s direct account, was reported to be a great success. They had gotten through to the margins of the cancer and eliminated everything they could see. As Pete convalesced from the brutality of the surgery (and learned what he would have to do for the rest of his life without a spleen), his doctors marveled at his miraculous recovery. He was told:

<div>The plan going forward was to do routine scans every 4 months for the rest of his life, with the expectation that he would be clear and cancer-free and live out the rest of his days emanating his genius for the rest of us to receive and try to grasp (which we all struggle to do).

<div>Sadly, at the very first 4-month scan in April of 2022, his oncologist was shocked and personally dismayed to see that the cancer was back and that it had metastasized to his liver and lungs. There was only one treatment available from the NHS — a new and more vicious course of chemo that is keeping him alive but is not something that will take him on a trajectory towards surgery or any other life-saving intervention. Pete has remained with us for the last 6 months via this barbaric chemotherapy protocol, which poisoned him and has landed him in the hospital with sepsis more than once.

<div><strong>The Where?</strong>

<div>Because one of my personal specialities is finding needles in the internet haystack, I found a possible CURE for Pete’s type of pancreatic cancer. That’s right, you read that correctly: A CURE…

<div>There are cutting-edge approaches to cancer that seem like they are a far-off dream only realized some time in the future, but in fact, they are happening right now. These treatments are custom-designed for each individual patient not based on their type of cancer but on the patient’s own specific cancer cells. The treatment is derived from their own immune system T-cells, or if their T-cells are dormant, they are able to formulate a vaccine based on the patient’s mRNA. Labs in the United States that are working on these treatments are charging $500K TO $1M. But with some research into which labs/hospitals/universities are doing this type of work in Europe, we found one in Tübingen, Germany for far less. The costs is around €76k.

<div><strong>The How?</strong>

<div>The potential cure is the formulation of an anti-cancer peptide vaccine. Individualized tumor neoantigen-targeting peptide vaccination is a promising approach tested in clinical trials. It serves as an additional treatment to conventional anti-tumor therapy and may be continued as a long-term therapy option. The vaccine produced will train and activate the immune system to recognize and destroy tumor cells. Generally speaking, the process is done in 2 steps:

<div>Phase 1: The lab in Tübingen will perform a thorough genetic analysis of Pete’s tumor cells. (Timeframe: 4-6 weeks)

<div>Phase 2: An individual peptide vaccine is produced and administered over a period of 1 year. (Timeframe: 12-14 weeks to produce the individualized vaccines; then 4 vaccines given within 10-12 days; then 10 vaccinations given over the course the rest of the year. Blood is drawn at each visit to the Tübingen lab to monitor the efficacy of the treatment.

It’s up to the patient to pay on their own. It’s time for us to give what we can to help Pete finance this treatment.

<div>My beloved fiancée and manager of 20 years, Cassandra has been very strong and determined ever since her diagnosis of Stage IV breast cancer in 2018. And while she has been maintaining an optimistic view with some degree of success, her most recent scan had indicated metastatic growth in the brain which has already required a very aggressive treatment plan resulting in some significant side effects.

We are truly comforted by that thought and so appreciate your words of love and prayers for strength. Life on earth goes on, the reality sometimes hitting us smack in the face as it has with Pete. The medical expenses and the day to day costs for her care have mounted up. Although your past generosity has helped immensely, and we are forever grateful, Pete is in a hole so deep, he's unable to afford even cremation. Unfortunately Christy went into labor with the twins.  They are 2 months premature.  They are on life support and they were taken to another hospital.  Together weighing a little under 6 lbs.   <br />They have lost all their possessions. They have no money, clothes or a place to go as the babies will be in the hospital for at least 6 to 8 weeks.  Christy will need extensive surgery and rehabilitation therapy. <br />If you can possibly help please donate.  If unable to please keep them in your prayers.  Christy Ann has a long road ahead of her. On Thursday, May 4th, at 1:00am, famed jazz drummer Tommy Campbell was viscously attacked near his apartment in Lower Manhattan, New York City. Two assailants attacked him in the street and left him with the tendons to both of his knees torn, a broken foot, and a severely sprained wrist. He was rushed to Bellevue hospital. Surgeons reattached the tendons to his knees and treated his other injuries. He was released today, May 13th, and is back at his apartment recovering from this heinous crime.<br /><br />We are reaching out to the music community and beyond asking for donations to help Tommy through this very difficult time. He has no health insurance and his limited funds have been decimated. Please help us to get Tommy back on his feet and playing drums again. On February 1st, 2017, Albert Wing suffered a stroke which disabled the motor functions on the right side of his body from head to foot. After two weeks in the hospital, four more in a physical therapy facility, and now in a facility with no physical therapy available, he is still unable to stand or walk, and must continue to be under constant care and cannot yet go home. His medical expenses are mounting every day, yet he still requires months of physical therapy if there is to be any hope of recovery. We, his musical cohorts in Banned From Utopia, ask that you join us in helping Albert gather the funds necessary to cover his already overwhelming medical expenses and ongoing physical therapy expenses so that he can access the services he needs to recover from this debilitating, life changing, frightening experience, and return to being the productive, astonishingly creative musician he has been all his life.
