<div>In the early hours of January 17, 2025, tragedy struck when a devastating fire engulfed Frankie's home, claiming not only their beloved pets but also leaving them without a roof over their heads. This sudden loss has left them in a state of shock and devastation, as they grapple with the emotional toll of losing their cherished animals and the memories they've built in their home.

<div><strong>Frankie (Bechel) Crew served in the United States Army for 10 years (2006-2016) with multiple combat deployments to the Middle East.</strong> He was then medically retired (MEDBOARD) after multiple surgeries on his hips. Frankie is the only surviving brother in his family and caretaker of his mother. He works part-time for Excel Tools &amp; Engineering (ETE) as a machinist.

Devastation of a Housefire: Helping the Crew Family

<div>I am starting this fundraiser for close friends who are like family to us. The boy in this picture, his name is Reese. He is 16. Early on the morning of Sunday, June 23rd, he was walking along the side of the road to cool down after having words with his mother. While doing so, he was struck by a vehicle which then fled the scene of the accident, leaving him lying in the ditch alone.

<div>His mother Gloria, who is pictured with him in the photo, found him and started administering life-saving measures, waiting for EMT's and emergency personnel to arrive and take over. He was then rushed to the hospital where he underwent emergency surgery to remove his spleen because it was so badly damaged from the accident. He also suffered trauma to his head. He currently is not showing any signs of brain activity and is currently in a coma.

<div>Later in the day on Sunday, he was life-lined via helicopter to the much larger hospital in Indianapolis because the neurological testing that they're wanting to do couldn't be performed at the hospital where he was. But as of Sunday evening, he was still showing no brain activity and things weren't looking good for his outcome. But I'm keeping the faith and praying that God will protect him and save him. And I'm hoping that the reason for no brain activity is due to the trauma he's suffered and he pulls through.

We have an appointment with surgeon Wednesday. She has had to retire. We are setting up this account to help with daily expenses, travel to and from, treatment and medications. <div>My name is Cara Plake and my 18-year-old cousin Josiah has made the decision to stop cancer treatments and go on hospice services as the oncologist says there is nothing else they can do. Even with chemo, radiation, and immunotherapy, the MRI showed that a new tumor has grown. He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer on 4/30/25 called glioblastoma. The oncologist says he only has a few weeks left to live. Despite this devastating news, Josiah remains strong and comforts his parents through this tragedy. On July 25th, Josiah signed his own Do Not Resuscitate form as he plans to move into a facility on hospice services until the end. With this news, his parents are needing assistance with funding for his funeral arrangements. All donations so far have helped them get Josiah things he wanted or needed along with giving them the ability to live close to their son for the past 8 months in Indianapolis.

<div>Let's rewind to December 2024.

<div>Josiah was excited to get his driver's license so he could get a job, take on some new responsibilities, and gain freedom like any other teenager. He was on winter break from school and attending family gatherings for the holidays.
</div>

<div>On Christmas Day, he tells us that he is having double vision and headaches. He has always had headaches and thought nothing of it, but with the double vision he wondered how he would even take his driver's exam. His parents take him to the eye doctor the next week, who tells them to go to the emergency department as he had swelling on his optic nerves. He was scared to go to the hospital and wondered what they could find, but he had no idea the nightmare he was about to face.

<div>Immediately after the appointment with the eye doctor, he walked into the hospital with his parents but ended up leaving with right leg paralysis after multiple failed attempts at lumbar punctures. He was then transferred to a children's hospital in Indianapolis for further workup since he is only 17. They found swelling and a couple lesions on his lower spine but no identifiable cause. They ruled-out cancer, infection, and autoimmune disorders. All the tests were coming back normal. The doctors and nurses were calling him, "Mystery Jo." After a week in the hospital, he was sent to a rehab facility for several weeks, and then eventually home, although he continued to have right leg paralysis and lives up a flight of stairs. His parents had to carry him in and out of the house.

<div>He started falling at home, having painful muscle spasms that would make his leg jump, all while the head pressure and headaches continued.

<div>But then the double vision came back...

<div>His parents carried him down the flight of stairs to get into the car as they could not wait on a neurosurgeon appointment. They took him back to Peyton Manning Hospital as something was not right as his symptoms continued to worsen.
</div>

<div>About a week into his hospital stay, his eyesight got to the point he was only seeing silhouettes. His paralysis continued to worsen as he was now paralyzed from the waist down and could no longer control his urination, requiring nurses to catheterize him to relieve his bladder. Multiple MRIs later, they found lesions scattered throughout his entire spine. They placed a temporary shunt in his brain to relieve some pressure and he slowly regained some eyesight back. He had 10 days of plasmapheresis with minimal progress.

<div>After a month in the hospital, on 3/28/25, they placed a permanent shunt in his brain that drains the excess fluid into his abdominal cavity. We met with the specialists for a care plan meeting to discuss Josiah's condition and plan. The doctors recommended extensive rehab but are uncertain if or how much he will improve. They said it likely will take a long time for him to heal and only time will tell (words that no parent wants to hear).

<div>With little to no warning, they transferred Josiah to Riley hospital on 4/1/25. Multiple tests later, we still had no clear diagnosis except that he now had a fungal infection in his spine, Histoplasma, that they treated with IV antifungal medication. They found calcium build up on lymph nodes in the lungs, but they never took a biopsy of this. They decided to take biopsies from the spine. The neurosurgeon said there was abnormal tissue adhered to his spine. The biopsy results came back with stage 4 brain and spine cancer. The doctor gave his parents a devastating prognosis, as he said that Josiah likely will not survive. Even with the poor prognosis, Josiah decided to give it his all and fight this cancer. <div>With donations, they have been able to supply Josiah with a fan, new phone, an IPad, sensory activities, new clothes (he's lost 40 pounds), Nintendo Switch, and get him all the snacks and meals he craves. Living in Indianapolis for 8 months has been expensive, but every donation has helped greatly!
