Update from Kevin & Nichola:

1-15-25

Thank you to everyone who has reached out to us and sent funds or donated items over the last week.

We are moved and overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from our colleagues, friends, school and sports communities, running partners, college and high school buddies, parents, siblings, extended families and more. The love and friendship of others is what is getting us through every day.

It’s been a week since we discovered that our home was lost in the Eaton fire. We are still not able to go see it and we have been told it could be weeks before we are able to. We know from photos taken by a Reuters colleague that it is unlikely we will find anything to salvage.

More than the loss of our house and its belongings, we mourn the loss of our community. Altadena is such a special place. We have many friends and neighbors there who, like us, loved living in such proximity to nature and our beautiful San Gabriel Mountains. Many of our friends have also lost their homes. We hope that one day we will all live there together again.

We are pleased to report that we have secured a place to live in Pasadena for at least the next few months while we look for long-term housing. We know that this will be a long road.

Our kids have been incredible throughout this ordeal. They are all back at school and are happy to see their friends, classmates and swim teammates. We are in awe of their positivity.

Thanks to everyone out there rooting for us. We are very lucky to have you all.

UPDATE: Thank you to all who have donated to this fundraiser for the Walker family ❤️ they are deeply grateful and look forward to the day when they can “pay it forward.” Right now they are working hard to find a rental house so that the kids can return to school. Please continue to send your thoughts and prayers their way and for all the communities affected by this terrible disaster. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

On Jan. 8th, my brother and his family -- Kevin, Nichola, Jack, Cecilia, and Penny -- tragically lost their beautiful Altadena, CA, home and all their possessions in the Eaton Fire. With only five minutes to evacuate, we are blessed that they are physically safe. Now they face the huge task of finding new housing and getting the kids back into a routine.

Those of you who know the Walkers know they are a special family who bring kindness, laughter and creativity to those around them. They are resilient and they don't want to ask for support, but they need it.

If you are interested in contributing to this fundraiser, it will go directly toward helping them with essentials such as food, fuel, clothing, and the various day-to-day needs to rebuild their lives in this incredibly challenging time. If you would prefer to purchase a gift card, Trader Joe's and Target are their go-to for most things. I am happy to share my address. If you are unable to give, please feel free to send them any words of comfort via me and I will gladly pass it along.

Most importantly, thank you for coming together to help support a wonderful family in their time of need.

Help the Walkers Rebuild After Eaton Fire

Hi,

My name is Pat McBride and I am Michelle Pietrangelo's Uncle.

A loving and caring mom and High School Science Teacher, Michelle was struck by a delivery van while she was crossing Mass Ave in Arlington, MA, on September 10, 2020.

Following three cranial plastic surgeries, along with numerous hours of skilled medical care and rehabilitation treatment, improves are encouraging.

Unfortunately, the medical bills and other necessary treatment and special family care costs are mounting significantly.

The latest month's family out of pocket expenses totaled approximately $30,000.

Your support can help us reach our goals:

Bring Michelle home in 2021.

For someone of Michele's age, pre-accident condition and the level of Brain trauma:

80% brain level status in 2 - 3 years would be expected and gradually go beyond with the type of care and therapy anticipated.

Current PT Goal:

Enable Unassisted Standing (now moderately assisted)

                            Eventually take on walking

Current OT Goals:

Enable self-cleaning activities (now teeth brushing and face washing)

                           Identify toileting needs

Shower unassisted with a shower seat

Current Speech Goals:

                            Increase talking volume

                            Improve annunciation

Improve swallowing to get back to normal food eventually

Whatever you can contribute would be a blessing to all and further the efforts to get Michelle back Home to her family and to the classroom with her students.

Can you help us raise $25,000 to provide a safe and welcoming home to an Afghan refugee family? You can make a difference with any monetary donation. A group of people from Reading, MA and surrounding towns has come together to help settle an Afghan family in the coming weeks. The same group of people successfully brought a family from Kakuma refugee camp in Ethiopia 3 years ago. The family shown in the photo is one of many who risked their lives to get to peaceful soil. This family will only have the clothes on their backs and will need any and all help from us. Our group will help find affordable housing, work on English skills, as well as job retraining, schooling and social integration. We believe we are a welcoming community and have the love and generosity to get this family settled. If you prefer to write a check, please make it out to 'Church of the Good Shepherd,' memo 'Afghan Refugees.' Mail to Reading POWIR, PO Box 255, Reading, MA 01867. We need your help - prayers and donations will make this happen!

The next few months brought much uncertainty and eventually Matt was diagnosed with a terminal glioblastoma (fast growing brain tumor). Over the next year and half, he fought valiantly, receiving treatment at the Stephen E. and Catherine Pappas Center for Neuro-Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Although Matt initially responded well to treatment, his last MRI showed significant tumor progression with all treatment options exhausted.

Matt displayed relentless commitment to his treatment. He endured radiation, chemo, infusions, and injections with tenacity, courage, and his trademark sense of humor. Matt's strong sense of duty to family has never wavered; he has continued working at his full time job throughout this trying time.

Suzie, Michael (14), Alex (12), Charlotte (9), and Audrey (7) have been extraordinarily supportive to Matt through this battle. Their love and care brought immeasurable joy during difficult moments in recent months. Watching the boys play basketball and tennis and the girls dance have been especially uplifting for this dedicated father.

Matt and Suzie were high school sweethearts at RMHS, where he was also an accomplished swimmer. After marrying in 2005, Matt and Suzie came back to Reading and have been active members of the community ever since. In addition to being a successful professional, what is most notable about his work life is the commitment Matt shows to those alongside him. Undoubtably, there will be be a tremendous void without his fun, loving, presence as a husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend, teammate, and colleague.

Matt has been the primary breadwinner for Suzie and the kids throughout the last 15 years. Our hope is that funds raised will be used to help cover long-term and educational expenses for Michael, Alex, Charlotte, and Audrey and to facilitate the transition back to full-time work for our dear friend Suzie.

With Love,

Mimi Connelly and Lauren Wagner

Kristen Polizzotto, one of our Restore team members, has recently been diagnosed with a recurrence of her Lymphoma. She was approximately 2.5 years in remission when her follow up scans revealed the devastating news.

Kristen is married- with a 3-year-old son Cayden. Her husband Bryan- just recently finished his own cancer treatment. This young family has already seen too much suffering.

In a short time, Kristen has become a dear friend and we want to do everything in our power to support her. We have started this Go Fund Me page for her and her family- to assist during this holiday season and beyond.

We invite each of you to participate in the fundraising efforts and in supporting Kristen and her family during this challenging time and please share with others who may wish to participate.

Thanks in advance for your kind consideration.
Eleana and the Restore team.

Mr. Syed Ahmed Jamal, beloved Lawrence family man, scientist and community leader, has been detained by ICE agents and is being held in jail in Morgan County, Missouri awaiting deportation. Syed is a well-respected Molecular Biologist who has done significant research with the University of Kansas, Children’s Mercy, Rockhurst University, and other local entities. He has lived in the United States for thirty years and has attained his undergraduate and graduate degrees here. Syed is a devoted supporter of his children’s schools, regularly volunteering in classrooms and on site councils and recently mounting a campaign for a vacated school board seat. Syed is viewed as a leader within his faith community at the Lawrence Islamic Center as well.

Last week, Syed was arrested in front of two of his children as he readied them for school. His wife and three children (9th grade, 7th grade, and 1st grade) are devastated and fearful. This family is in crisis and needs our support. Please donate towards legal costs while this family fights for a stay of removal.

My name is Marci Leuschen, a friend of the family in Lawrence,KS, and I am helping to organize this on behalf of Syed's family. These generous donations will be used to help fund Syed's legal costs and the added expenditures that come from being in this situation.
Syed's brother, Syed H. Jamal of Phoenix, AZ will manage these funds.
