Type One Do One

October last year was a defining time for our family, as some of you know our youngest daughter, Abbie, aged 2 at the time was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. To say our world was rocked to the core was an understatement.

Abbie had started back at Montessori and was out of sorts for a couple weeks prior to being diagnosed but being the autumn we put it down to a bug or virus. As time went on, her symptoms persisted and got worse, until on Saturday morning we took her to the GP who immediately told us to take her to A&E where she was diagnosed Type 1. There is no history of Type 1 in either families, so the diagnosis came as a complete shock.

We were in the hospital for 5 days, while they stabilised Abbie and our education began on how to administer insulin, check her blood sugars, the list goes on. While Type 1 is a manageable disease, its needs to be monitored 24 hours/365 days of the year. It never sleeps (and rarely lets us sleep), you can never forget about it, if Abbie is more active we need to be aware as her blood sugars may drop, if she doesn't get enough insulin, her blood sugars will get to high which can cause many complications.

Throughout the whole journey Abbie has just gotten on with things, she never fought us as we injected her multiple times a day or took her blood sugars, she got on with her life and lives it to the full. She is a happy, mischievous little girl who is a fighter in our eyes and we are so proud of how she has coped with everything.

Type 1 Diabetes can hit any family, at any time. It is the one of the most prevalent childhood diseases being diagnosed. The team in Crumlin, who Abbie attends have been amazing. Abbie was moved onto an insulin pump over the summer which gives her more freedom to be the kid she wants to be. The team in crumlin have been amazing since her diagnosis, even on our darkest days, they were there, supporting us, educating us.

As a thank you and to mark Abbie's 1 year diaversary, I am running the 3/4 marathon in Athlone on the 7th Oct and Dublin City Marathon on the 28th Oct to raise funds for the diabetic team in Crumlin.

Any contribution would be greatly appreicated, these guys go above an beyond for all who attend their clinic.

Early Symptoms of Type 1 diabetes:
Unquenchable thirst
Frequent urination (in babies and toddlers, heavy diapers)
In children with no previous concerns, sudden bedwetting
Weight loss (despite an increased appetite)
Decreased energy level
Blurry vision
A fruity smell to the breath

If you recognize any of the symptoms, contact your GP immediately.
