Last month, my friend Tucker Martine’s new recording studio was broken into and more than $70,000 worth of microphones, amps, and guitars were stolen. Tucker spent years collecting these unique pieces of equipment, and the theft comes just as he was opening the newest version of Flora Recording in a building Tucker and his wife, singer-songwriter Laura Veirs, have gone deeply into debt to finish building out. It’s a huge setback just as this studio was getting off the ground. Currently the insurance company is trying to use a loophole to avoid helping with the loss. Tucker is trying everything possible to get them to honor his claim but the outcome is uncertain and will take a long time to unfold.

A beloved member of the music community for more than 25-years, Tucker makes records with bands big and small. He has worked for bands you have heard of and bands you haven’t. His love of music comes through in every record - he has even been nominated by his peers for more than one Grammy.

This GoFundMe campaign will help Tucker replace the critical gear to get the new studio properly up and running. This campaign is being run in conjunction with a Portland, OR benefit concert, also being organized by the greater music community. Details to be announced soon.

As Jim James, of My Morning Jacket, wrote recently: “Anyone who owns a small business knows how difficult it is to build it up and get it just right - so it is incredibly painful when someone comes along and takes away what you have worked so hard for so many years to build. Tucker is the best both as a person and a musical wonder. Let’s help him!”

UPDATE: A number of the guitars were just recovered. A guitar store in Tacoma, Washington bought them from the thieves before realizing they were stolen instruments. Some of the proceeds of this campaign will be used to repay the store owner what he paid for them.

Thank you for any support you can give Tucker and his family at this difficult moment.

A note from Tucker -

The day I found the studio broken into I went into a deep, dark hole. I wondered if it was going to be the straw that broke me, I wondered if I had it in me to finish the studio and recover from the break in. Fast forward to today, 2.5 months later I can honestly say that I’ve never felt so fortunate. I’ve never felt more in awe of how profoundly caring people can be. The studio is almost done and this support from you all and the extended community has me more psyched than ever to make records. I feel better about humanity and in a better place emotionally than I did before the break in happened. You all have done more than help me recover and you’ve given me something more valuable than equipment and instruments: you’ve shown me what community really means and how strong we are together. I will never forget this. I love the new place so much. It feels brighter and filled with your goodwill in there. You guys saved my ass. Thank you.

Friends, This is all just so amazing. We are feeling the love near and far and couldn't get our feet back under us without you! Tucker is burning the candle at both ends recording, mixing, dealing with the insurance agency and getting the studio up and running and wanted me to extend his deep gratitude to you all. The benefit show in Portland on June 3 sold out quickly - thank you so much to the musicians and managers who are putting their efforts into that as well. (I'll be playing some songs, too - I'm excited!) We feel so lucky to have such an awesome, supportive community helping us through this rough patch. All the best and thank you again, Laura and Tucker

We have a Midnight Studio Fairy!

For months I’ve been meaning to scrub or power wash some graffiti off of the front of the building. This morning I noticed the graffiti was gone! The brick facade is pristine. Thank you, Mystery Fairy!

This is probably the same fairy who not long ago painted over the white tags on the black gate and who returned the tagged Flora symbol to its former bronze glory.

Whoever you are, we notice and appreciated your efforts! This is the kind of sweet silver lining that keeps appearing as the days go on.

Thank you to all the friends who continue to donate to the campaign. We are coming for air!!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Contributor Jerimaya Grabher said it best:
"Ladies and Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability. Tucker Martine will be that man. Better than he was before. Better. Stronger. Faster."

Friends, Thank you SO MUCH for your generosity and words of encouragement this past week! Thanks to you all, it has been a busy and exciting time at the studio:

- Tucker and his crew have now secured the building and have the crucial gear needed to record an artist who flew in from Norway yesterday. YAY!
- The sump pump in the basement temporarily failed and we dealt with a minor flood yesterday. (OMG, what's next?!) The basement is now dry(ish); RIP waterlogged pump organ.
- Tucker's summer schedule of work is filling up. One of the albums he will be recording at the new place is my 11th solo effort (our 11th album together after 19 years of collaboration). I'm excited!
- Tucker is burning the candle at both ends overseeing the finishing of the studio, dealing with theft logistics and recording for long days. He wanted me to tell you that he is moved and humbled by your generosity and he extends his deepest gratitude to you all for believing in him.
