International Women's Day

Today is International Women's Day. It says so in my Calendar. I saw it on Google.

International "Women's Day" was first celebrated in the early 1900s. "International Women's Day (IWD), also called International Working Women's Day, is marked on March 8 every year. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political, and social achievements. Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries, primarily in Europe, including Russia. In some regions, the day lost its political flavor, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother's Day and Valentine's Day. In other regions, however, the political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner. This is a day which some people celebrate by wearing purple ribbons."

Thanks, Wikipedia.

You know, the existence of a "Women's Day" is nice, though as far as holidays go, I think Ihop's "Free Pancake Day" might get more buzz. However, the thought of a day celebrating the diversity and empowerment of women is a lovely gesture.

In one way, the existence of a single day such as this is in a way startling to me. Like, we need a specific allotment of time to celebrate womanhood? And also, only one day? The vastness of "women's economic, political and social achievements" spans the history of time, and reasons for people to "express their love for women" are unfathomable in their expanse. Therefore, is not a single quantity of time patronizing and demeaning in a sense?

And yet, let me get off my high horse. It's easy for me to jump to such conclusions, living in comfortable Southern California, where I have freedoms not afforded to much of the world. In its way then, International Women's Day is a good reminder. The, "Oh yeah, I guess we're not really treated equally overall, are we?" Or, "Let's look at certain issues that women have to deal with."

Differences will always birth inequality, and not until we all live inside gender-neutral robots will we be free from social constructions and their consequences, as well as physical realities due to our sex. That goes for men and women. And societies will always create roles to fill, whether it's based on gender or not.

So I'd like to take the socio-impact out of the equation for today. I'm an artist, not a politician, and I'm only equipped to deal with beauty and abstracts. So for International Women's Day, I say read a work by your favorite poetess, bathe in your femininity, write a love letter to a woman of beauty, be thankful for your feminine friendships. And, perhaps, take time to reflect on what womanhood is and what it means. That's certainly been on my mind lately.

As for me, I think it's a good time to kick "˜Cat-Fight' into the next level. A day of celebration and thought can only be a good omen for a show that seeks to explore the complexity of womanhood.

Within the next week, announcements will be made with dates, cast and more! Everything has contributed to a powerful momentum. Now the show is ready to spread its silken wings.

I am re-launching the Online Fundraiser. We made our initial goal quickly, and it is with huge appreciation that I accept your support and help, and I am honored by everyone's enthusiasm and kindness. I have raised the goal quite a bit "“ even if we don't reach it, every dollar will help. The money will go towards everything that makes up putting on a show, as well as funds into "˜True Focus Theater' itself, which has aspirations of expanding its shows, its writing groups, its improv group, its family and reach.

I know I'm talking about the future here, and maybe getting ahead of myself. But if "International Women's Day" isn't an excuse for me to dream, I don't know what is.

For those of you who have already generously contributed, we will be working on sending the first wave of rewards after the performance dates are announced. If you have already donated, and wish to donate again, remember that rewards are cumulative. And if you have not donated, please consider helping out however you can.

Much love, with gratitude,
