Trombonists for Puerto Rico

Sparked by reading a number of articles on the slow pace of post-hurricane recovery in Puerto Rico — American trombonist and small businessman, Robert Mott, wondered “could we take a group of trombone players to Puerto Rico to perform free concerts, contribute to the rebuilding economy and let our brothers and sisters on the island know that we have not forgotten them?” Percolating this idea with fellow trombonist and YouTube sensation, Christopher Bill — and like-minded trombone colleagues and professionals from across the Mid-Atlantic — we’re planning a trip to the island the week of November 7-12, 2018 with a group of fellow trombonists to:

          • Spread hope by acknowledging the ongoing needs of the Puerto Rican people,
          • Honor them with gifts of music and dignified economic support of their livelihoods, and
          • Connect with them person to person as musicians and fellow human beings.

We’ll do this by:

• Visiting and staying in towns that were hard hit by the hurricanes and have suffered from tourist cancellations. We want to get real dollars to the local business people, enjoy their hospitality and in the process make new friends. (Local hotels and restaurants, not global chains.)
• Perform free trombone ensemble concerts in those hard-hit areas (by talented professional trombonists) to help lift the spirits of the communities and let them know they have not been forgotten.
• Act as musical ambassadors, reaching out to Puerto Rican trombone students with master classes, a full-day workshop and concert that’s free to all island trombonists and students, and possibly instrument gifting to support and encourage artistry and creativity even in the midst of the frustration of slow recovery.

We look forward to meeting and sharing the stage with Puerto Rican trombone professionals and musicians in order to create long-term friendships and sow the seeds for musical collaboration and support.
